Networking is crucial for career development and personal growth. It is the key to communicating with professionals and letting people know about one’s competencies and interests.

Introverts find it difficult to build connections and face real challenges in establishing and maintaining social networks. Consequently, they may miss opportunities to find jobs, especially when they are new graduates.

The good news is that networking strategies for new graduates help introverts enter the workforce.

This article provides practical strategies for developing efficient networking skills. It aims to help readers understand how to effectively connect with others, even when facing challenges such as introversion or being new to the professional world. So, face your fears of networking!

The importance of networking

Networking offers uncounted advantages for people on professional and personal levels. For new graduates, it allows them to conquer the labor market, gain knowledge about their careers, and enhance their personality and skills.

Finding job opportunities

Career networking skills are used by new graduates to find jobs. It involves reaching out to your connections to navigate job opportunities. It is an effective informal way to get informed of new vacancies rather than depending on advertisements.

Yes, not all job opportunities are advertised. Some are exclusive to acquaintances and recommendations, usually called a “hidden market.” Efficient networking techniques can help new graduates explore these opportunities.

Networking makes you seen and visible. It is a resource pool that gives people access to experts and practitioners. Even after getting a job, this visibility strengthens your influence and reputation, allowing you to get promotions and higher salaries.

Asking for advice and mentorship

As a new graduate, the diversified and wide networks allow you to learn more about your career path. You can ask about courses, graduate degrees, resources, and technical details.

Networks allow a smooth flow of information among connections, allowing value exchange. Through talks, calls, and social media networking, you can update yourself with industry trends.

Personal development

Networking offers new graduates an opportunity to develop their personality. It boosts their confidence, improves communication skills, and expands social circles.

By establishing a supportive network, you will gradually gain confidence and the ability to express yourself, thus improving your communication skills. These characteristics are important for you as a new graduate to increase your opportunities in securing job posts.

Developing efficient networking skills

You need to know that networking is not magic, so you must exert effort to build your network and enhance your skills. Here are some important networking tips and tricks you need to put into practice:

Start with a strategy

Creating a professional network from scratch doesn’t come naturally for a lot of people. You need to do it systematically to get the best results.

Instead of looking at it like an insurmountable task, what about considering networking as your graduation project? One that needs a talented project manager who can set SMART goals, track their progress, and evaluate their efforts to upgrade their performance.

This calls for working on your project management skills. The very first step is setting up your SMART networking goals, for example:

Specific. Determine exactly what you want to achieve from networking. If you want to work in a multinational company, you need to specify the number of people you want to connect with, such as the recruitment team and department managers.

Measurable. You need to quantify your goals for example, the number of connection requests, discussions, calls, events, or messages.

Attainable. Networking goals are usually challenging, but they are achievable through the proper planning and execution. For example, you cannot set a goal of networking with 100 individuals, but ten may be reasonable. There is no rule about an ideal number of networks; it depends on the context and your skills.

Relevant. Your networking goals must encompass relevant steps. If you’d like to work in the engineering field, why waste time and effort networking with those in the medical field?

Time-bound: Your networking goal must have a start date and deadline.

Read more: Goal-Setting: Why You Should Set Goals

Networking must align with your career goals. You must identify your priorities in your networking efforts, whether professors, researchers, doctors, or others relevant to your field. You don’t need to waste time establishing networking in medical circles while pursuing engineering positions.

However, you must realize that a network does not guarantee an immediate job. But it can open the door for future opportunities. So, widen your scope while you network and focus on long-term goals.

When you start implementing your goals, you need to track your progress and monitor the trend of your networking efforts. Is your network expanding or shrinking? Have you achieved your SMART goals? If not, you can adjust your implementation and rethink your strategy. This is usually called corrective measures.

For example, if you decide to attend certain networking events and set a goal to communicate with CEOs of companies, but when you go, you will find that the top management does not usually attend such events. So, your corrective measure is to find alternative events or clubs to look for your network target.

Create meaningful connections

Turning initial contacts into meaningful relationships is essential. Life is full of surprises; today’s connection may be tomorrow’s helper. So, you need to follow up and keep in touch with your connections as much as you can. For example, send them greeting cards on national and religious occasions.

On the other hand, you don’t need to make connections with very strong ties. It is better to keep weak connections with a larger number of people rather than putting all effort into making strong connections with a smaller number of people. It is called the “strength in weak ties.”

This is called the “art of authentic networking,” in other words, going beyond normal connections. It creates genuine relationships based on shared values, respect, and sincerity. Rather than “transactional networking,” which depends on a short-term connection for a short period, this connection ends as soon as the transaction is done.

You can work on your rapport-building skills for efficient networking, for example.

Remembering names. Grabbing people’s attention in your conversation by calling them with their names.

Active listening. Engaging with the other side through asking them questions, showing interest, and being respectful.

Body language. Maintain consistent and active body language, such as maintaining eye contact and refraining from checking your phone.

Motivate yourself

Keeping and developing your network while looking for a job is not easy. It requires a high level of self-direction and motivation skills. You have to be proactive, initiate conversations, and establish networks.

Read more: How Increased Motivation Can Mean Increased Productivity

You can maintain higher levels of motivation if you control your internal self-talk. Consistently tell yourself your networking goals and diversify the content of your self-talk according to your situation.

For example, if you feel down, tell yourself motivating phrases such as “you can do it,” and if you feel your mood needs alleviation, you may say, “I feel good.”

Use professional networking platforms

Professional networking platforms are like social media platforms specifically dedicated to professional networking. It is a medium for users to contact individuals.

It is a good place for new graduates, especially introverts, to contact colleagues and professionals in the same industry to discuss industry trends and increase engagement among professional communities.

These networks have a lot of features that you can benefit from, such as chatting and posting updates and comments.

To make the best use of these networking sites:

Include complete information. Make sure to include all information about yourself, your education, interests, and work experience so people with similar interests can connect with you.

Post consistently. Keep posting updated information and achievements on your profiles.

Prioritize connections. Know the people you need to connect with to avoid making your home feed crowded with non-relevant content.

Be mindful. You need to use these networks wisely to not get addicted to them.

Read more: Yes, Social Media Productivity is a Thing

If you want to be influential in your social network, i.e., people will wait for your content and postings and be inspired by them, so you need to consider boosting your content creation skills.

Add value. Create valuable content to attract readers from your network. This content can include industry trends, tips and tricks, review articles, or publications.

Diversify. You should diversify the format of your content postings among posts, articles, photos, videos, and documents.

Tailor your content. Make your creations suit your network goals. In other words, if you want to network with professionals in a certain field, you must write things they must read and follow.

These skills help you establish a unique identity, gain peer recognition, and enlarge your network.

In conclusion

Networking offers new graduates many opportunities to develop their skills and knowledge and get jobs, especially from hidden job markets. Many fresh graduates suffer from introversion, which can hinder them from benefiting from networking pros.

You need to develop a well-designed plan to network with people who would really help you throughout your career. You need to ensure your online visibility on professional networks. Networking is a bi-dimensional process from which all parties usually benefit to ensure sustainability. So, you need to offer value to your connections.

It is time to conquer your fear and explore how networking can support your career and personal growth.

Have you ever felt too exhausted to execute your daily tasks? Does your energy fade away quickly? You are most likely burnt out!

Burnout negatively affects all aspects of life. It impacts job productivity, life satisfaction, and sleep quality. It often results in deteriorated health and lower self-esteem. For organizations, it even increases turnover rates and decreases the quality of work.

Hence, learning how to overcome work burnout is necessary to cope with physical and mental exhaustion at work.

Consider each word in the article and figure out whether you or your loved ones experience this phenomenon.

Start making a change and learn how to overcome job burnout!

Understanding job burnout

Christina Maslach, an American psychologist, defined burnout as “a psychological syndrome emerging as a prolonged response to chronic interpersonal stressors on the job.” The World Health Organization has not recognized burnout as an illness or disease in itself, but it impacts mental health.

To understand the phenomena of burnout, we need to differentiate it from stress and depression.

Stress is the immediate response of your body when facing any unpredictable situation. Job burnout is a sustained negative response to president stressors in work.

Read more: Maximizing Output, Minimizing Stress: A Blueprint for Peak Performance

Depression is characterized by prolonged sadness, loss of interest, sleep, and appetite disturbances, and can lead to thinking of suicide. Some studies argue that the late levels of burnout and depression are too close to be distinguished, but the main difference is that burnout is related to occupational and workplace matters.

Read more: Fighting the Blues: How to Build Resilience Against Depression

To identify burnout, you must understand the three main components of burnout, they are:

Exhaustion. It is when an employee feels drained and overwhelmed and has no physical or psychological energy. It is considered the main component of burnout, but that does not mean that being exhausted equals being burnt out.

Cynicism or depersonalization. This is when an employee feels they no longer belong to their workplace and don’t care for their colleagues, and then voluntarily distances and detaches themselves from the job.

Reduced professional accomplishment. It’s a feeling of inefficacy where an employee doubts their capability to progress or achieve at work.

Recognizing the signs of burnout

While exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced professional accomplishment are the core components of burnout, they are manifested in other physical, behavioral, and mental symptoms.

Symptoms may vary from one person to another.

The first step in overcoming burnout is to detect and acknowledge the situation and recognize the symptoms and signs of burnout.

Common signs of job burnout:

The feeling of physical and mental exhaustion, fatigue, and overwhelmedness

An obvious decline in your job performance and achievement

Difficulty in concentration

These symptoms are related to work, not personal issues

Exploring the causes of job burnout

Job burnout is not the result of a single situation but of an accumulation of exposure to many stressors and exhausting experiences.

When work demands are never-ending and not fairly distributed, and there is no time to take a break, this prevents employees from maintaining a healthy work-life balance and thus get exhausted, and then, in the long run, they become burnt out. Surprisingly, “underloading” is also a cause of burnout because of boredom in the absence of meaningful work.

Lack of effective communication between employees and managers increases the sense of stress. Employees feel they do not know much about their organization, and they do not hear feedback about their performance.

Read more: Transforming Workplace Tension Into Team Success

Role ambiguity and role conflict are job characteristics that instinctive burnout. Having an unclear job description triggers job burnout, i.e., when an employee experiences role ambiguity where they do not know what, how, and why they are doing their job.

Personal challenges are also a factor in developing burnout. The major challenge is the inability to achieve a balance between work and family, so your family accuses you of not caring enough. Other challenges include financial hardship and the inability to cope with daily stressors.

The consequences of job burnout

Although job burnout is work-related, it affects personal domains by experiencing higher work-family conflicts.

All pressure of burnout is translated into physical and psychological diseases. Studies have shown that burnout leads to insomnia, mental disorders like depression, and physical issues like headaches, back pain, and stomachaches.

The American Psychological Association mentioned in one of its articles a series of statistics about the impact of job burnout on health. Job burnout contributes to higher levels of Type 2 diabetes by 84%, hypertension by 40%, and depressive disorders by 180%. It also increases the rate of sick leaves in offices to a period that exceeds 14 days by 57%.

Employees who suffer from burnout experience a decline in their job performance in the workplace. They are less engaged in work and tend to resign more. Burnout causes higher levels of absenteeism, presenteeism, and turnover, which leads to direct costs for organizations. Managers must also be agents of change with employees.

Strategies to treat burnout

Overcoming work burnout is necessary because it is “contagious.” The phenomenon of burnout is not a unidimensional one, so uniting efforts are needed to combat it. The earlier you intervene to solve the problem of burnout, the more likely you are to recover!

Employee-centric approaches

To prevent or intervene in curing burnout, you must acknowledge that you bear a responsibility towards yourself through self-care, striving for work-life balance, and combating procrastination.

The spillover between your personal and professional domains alleviates burnout. Thus, you need to plan your life well to address and fulfill your needs from all domains. You can prepare a weekly flexible schedule and distribute work tasks, family and friends gatherings, self-care time, entertainment, and relaxation.

Communicate your schedule with your family and friends to not expect anything from you at the time of work. Additionally, switch off your mobile phone and communication platforms after finishing your working hours so you can relax and get ready for another working day.

In a podcast episode, Dr. Marieke Ledingham, a burnout researcher, proposed some efficient strategies for overcoming burnout in life. She advises us to avoid procrastination by avoiding excuses and setting SMART goals at work. Additionally, do not wait for others to celebrate your success; you must know how to motivate and reward yourself.

Employer-driven solutions

Employers have a big role in helping employees prevent and overcome mental exhaustion. They have the authority to refine work arrangements to ensure that employees are less stressed and more productive.

Some examples of efforts they can offer to foster a healthy work environment include:

Conducting surveys to detect the existence of burnout at the workplace and its causes;

Giving employees a degree of autonomy in work arrangements, such as hybrid or remote work settings;

Offering well-being services at the office, such as free therapy sessions;

Making employees feel rewarded and recognized both materially and morally;

Avoiding excessive workload and reconsidering dividing job tasks fairly.

Collaborative efforts

Social support is essential in overcoming burnout and depression. The support received by family members, colleagues, managers, and friends can reduce the risk of burnout. In the workplace, employees will be open to discussions and collaborate effectively if they feel supported. Incorporating employees into the problem-solving process and encouraging open and ongoing communication among all levels of an organization.

All organization members must care for each other. When they observe signs of job burnout in their colleagues, they must intervene, either by gently informing them or asking a specialist for help.

In conclusion

Job burnout occurs due to chronic stress at work. It causes physical exhaustion, a strong feeling of detachment from work and colleagues, and a reduced sense of accomplishment. Its symptoms may be physical (exhaustion), behavioral (isolation from colleagues), mental (lack of concentration), or reduced job performance.

Overcoming burnout requires a multidimensional approach. On the employee side, they must eliminate procrastination and develop a healthy lifestyle. Employers need to reevaluate workload and give employees a range of flexibility. Additionally, social support and cooperation among employees and employers are also needed.

Now, it is your turn to make a real change and prioritize your well-being without sacrificing work quality.

The key answer is work-life balance, which requires collaboration between employers and employees. Discuss these solutions with your colleagues and try to implement them for a better working environment!

“Travel is not about the destination but the experience. . . . That’s what makes [it] so appealing, so addictive, and that’s what makes Rediscovering Travel so necessary.” — Peter Greenberg

Traveling is a common activity that varies in its purpose — you can travel for vacation, family visits, business trips, or a combination of objectives. Given everything you should do, traveling can be exhausting and inefficient if not well-planned. You may not exploit every opportunity because you’ll run out of money, time, and energy from all you have to do. But travel planning is the key to overcoming most of these challenges.

There is an ongoing relationship between traveling and productivity. On one hand, traveling may be a way to boost personal productivity, on the other hand, efficient practices can give you a better traveling experience. But only if you plan properly.

Thus, this article explores ways to create productive and meaningful journeys either for business or entertainment purposes.

Understanding the foundations

Before discussing how to maximize your travels, you must first understand why travel is such a big deal in the first place. After all, traveling isn’t anything noteworthy, right?

Not so. Travel is more than just moving from one area to another in pursuit of a goal. It can be a deeply transformative experience, linking to mental health, productivity, and even personal growth. Here are some benefits:

Boosts mental health

Travel has many benefits for your mental health. For example, traveling is a way to boost mental resilience. It enables you to overcome and bounce back from challenges. It is a perfect break from your job to relieve stress.

Read more: Shame, Resilience, and Mental Health: Breaking the Cycle of Self-Doubt

Additionally, it contributes to creating a traveler’s mood. Some studies reveal that visiting new places and having new experiences can improve your overall happiness. According to studies on females’ mental health, the more vacations a woman takes, the less likely she will experience depression.

Drives personal growth

Additionally, travel is a wonderful opportunity to further understand yourself and “create a sense of wholeness.”

Your journey is a source of immersive learning and cultural experiences, i.e., exposure to new places and cultures is a rich source of knowledge and learning. “Foreign experiences increase cognitive flexibility and depth and integrativeness of thought,” Adam Galinsky, an American social psychologist, affirms. Moving from one place to another makes you understand other contexts, situations, and ways of life. Especially, If you are traveling with your loved ones.

Being on a journey with someone you love meets psychological needs. You nourish your soul with love and calmness.

Improves productivity

Traveling improves your productivity and effectiveness. The days you spend away from your office and home reduce the risk of burnout and increase energy and productivity. According to a study done by Harvard Business Review, 94% of the sample answered that they feel more energetic and happy after they come back from a trip.

However, if you are not well-prepared, results may reverse. Intentional travel planning can ensure and maximize traveling benefits. It can make your traveling experience smoother and more enjoyable.

Setting clear objectives for the trip

If you want to make anything productive, the golden rule is to set clear and specific goals, including traveling.

“Although goals are important, having a plan of action is vital to the success of those goals. Having a goal with no plan of action is like wanting to travel to a new destination without having a map.” — Steve Maraboli

You can categorize traveling into three categories according to objectives:

Leisure travel which is purely for entertainment and recreation purposes.

Business travel that aims at attending professional events such as conferences and meetings.

Visiting friends and relatives (VFR) has a social objective to meet acquaintances and friends.

These categories don’t mean that if you are traveling on business, you cannot have fun — you can create a well-balanced itinerary that includes both work and leisure activities.

Time management and itinerary planning

Efficient practices like time management and itinerary planning make your journey more productive. Proper planning helps you save time for resting or entertainment, cut down costs, ease the stress of travel, and hence make yourself happier.

Planning for travel is an exhausting but exciting experience even before it begins, the act of imagining a journey being a pleasure in itself. Matthew Killingsworth, a senior fellow at the Wharton School, says, “Since we know a trip has a defined start and end, our minds are prone to savor it, even before it’s started, sometimes people even prefer to delay good experiences like a trip so they can extend the period of anticipation.”

Furthermore, AI proves to be an effective tool for time management and planning. AI software can remind you of your schedule and give you recommendations based on variables. You can choose the appropriate tool and try it before heading to your destination. Some examples include:

Travel Planner AI

ChatGPT

iPlan.ai

TripIt

Wonderplan

Do your research and plan in advance

While planning for your journey, make sure to investigate and make proper decisions regarding the most critical aspects of your travel. Here are some pointers.

Look at your route and transportation: Consider reducing your traveling time when planning routes and transportation. The shorter the time on the road, the more productive you will be.

Decide who you’re going with: You may need to determine whether you are traveling in a group or alone, as the arrangements will differ. For example, you’ll likely get discounts and packages for activities with a bigger group.

Get introduced to laws: Research and study the legal environment of your destination. Look for laws like travel restrictions, prohibited acts, curfews, policies, or anything that might affect your stay. Also, check the legal prohibitions of food and beverages, especially alcohol.

Search weather conditions: You must ask about and research the weather conditions while traveling. This will help you avoid overweight packing and the extra cost of buying appropriate clothes in foreign currencies.

Consider your medical status: Plan in advance for any health-related need. Ensure that you have all your drugs and check their legibility. You may need to visit your doctor before traveling, especially if you suffer from chronic disease. Plus, check whether your insurance works in your destination.

Check overseas proceedings: Traveling abroad may require extra miles of planning, for example, VISA appointments and flight reservations, in addition to currency exchange.

Plan your financial conditions: Determining a budget for your journey can make your planning easier. For example, consider cooking yourself or looking for cheaper options when dining out. Furthermore, heading to your bank lets you learn more about payment options abroad.

Using a trip planner is essential to include all of these details without missing any information.

Prepare to minimize jet lag

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, jet lag results from a “mismatch between a person’s normal daily rhythms and a new time zone.” Symptoms of temporary sleep problems appear in people who travel across different time zones.

Read more: The Impact of Sleep on Productivity and How to Get Better Sleep – Insights

Jet lag affects your focus, concentration, mood, and physical performance, reducing productivity. You may suffer from stomach problems, too. However, you can prepare to minimize the impact of jet lag.

Determine the change of time zone and simulate it before traveling. In other words, if you are traveling west, you can adjust your sleeping routine and go to bed one or two hours later. While traveling east, you shall sleep one or two hours earlier. Otherwise, you can consider visiting a doctor to prescribe sleep-aid medications if needed.

While planning flights and accommodation, consider giving yourself a couple of days to rest. It is not the best thing to arrive and go to work instantly. Your body must have enough time to adjust to the new time setting.

Avoid any unhealthy practices before and during your journey. For instance, eat healthy food with small portions to avoid stomach aches while always keeping yourself hydrated, and include exercising and walking in your daily routine.

Reflection and goal assessment

Traveling is an experience, the more you travel, the better and more productive you can be. This happens when you assess your progress and evaluate the achievement of set goals during the trip. So you can better plan for your next journey.

One of the methods you can use is the Satisfaction with Travel Scale. It is a tool that evaluates your travel experience from different aspects: cognitive evaluation and affective evaluation. Cognitive evaluation measures your overall happiness, ranging from positive to negative. Affective evaluation assesses your emotional well-being, ranging from activated to deactivated.

Moving further, you could figure out the lessons you learned, the inspiring moments you spent, and the connections you made. It was an experience worth appreciating.

In conclusion

Travel, as an experience, is very rich. Whether traveling for business or pleasure, your personality and mental health get better. You are exposed to new cultures and communicate with new people, while your mental health improves with higher resilience and less stress. But these benefits vary according to the extent of steadiness and planning for your journey.

To maximize the benefits of traveling, you need to set your journey objectives clearly and smartly. Then, plan for every detail during your journey. Look at things like paperwork, accommodation, transportation, and your daily agenda to utilize your time and achieve your goals.

You need to know that traveling is an experience like all experiences you undertake, the more you practice and prepare, the more you will gain and enjoy. So, consider evaluating your trips regularly and identifying any potential challenges.

“Don’t let FOMO kill your MOJO.” — Brene Brown

The influence of digital technology and excessive use of social media is rampant. Because of these ever-present platforms, there is easy access to information about what is happening everywhere. This makes people continuously uncertain whether their life stacks up to others. This phenomenon, stemming from social media and the digital influx, is known as “FOMO.”

The term FOMO, or Fear of Missing Out, was introduced in 2004 and has since gained popularity. FOMO is a pervasive psychological phenomenon characterized by a strong desire to stay connected and engaged with what others are doing, especially in the context of social events, activities, or trends. It’s a strong need to belong, largely affected by fear of social exclusion.

This article looks at the impact of FOMO on productivity and strategies to manage and boost productivity. Explore it now and learn how to beat FOMO.

FOMO’s effect on productivity

A study of FOMO in the workplace described the phenomenon as pervasive apprehension tendencies toward other employees from a fear of exclusion from rewarding professional relationships (i.e., building professional relationships, gaining valuable information, and contributing to key organizational decisions and projects).

More broadly, FOMO is characterized by the fear or anxiety of missing out on something interesting, exciting, or important happening elsewhere — often fueled by social media usage.

The two important components of FOMO include the “perception of missing out” followed by a “compulsive behavior to maintain perceived social image and connections.” Because of this, FOMO is considered a negative emotional state arising from unmet social-related needs.

Several studies have explored the phenomenon of FOMO to understand its negative effects on people. Addressing FOMO is critical in workplace and personal productivity because of its negative effects, such as the following:

Decreasing work productivity

Research has shown that individuals with higher levels of FOMO are more vigilant toward smartphone notifications. Because of this, their mental resources are preoccupied, which could lead to distractions and poor concentration that, in turn, affects workflow and productivity.

The availability of information from different sources causes information overload, which disrupts the efficient flow of work and productivity. This fear results in multitasking, as employees attempt to stay connected while working. This tendency impairs concentration and quality of work.

Read more: How to Use Social Media to Your Advantage

Hence, FOMO distracts employees from tasks and hampers productivity owing to their compulsive need to stay connected and learn about what is happening with others. The bombardment of notifications and constant checking of digital devices to get the latest updates affect work productivity immensely.

Neglecting personal life

There’s a growing research-backed awareness that social connections are essential for overall well-being. In the digital era, the way people connect has shifted, and there are concerns over its negative influence on well-being.

For example, digital engagement is convenient (e.g., video conferencing), and people can connect with others from their homes across different countries and time zones. This type of digital engagement enhances productivity. However, the question becomes whether or not this connectivity is enough to forge interpersonal relationships.

A cross-sectional study found that face-to-face contact outside the home is critical for overall well-being (i.e., reduced feelings of loneliness) and for building strong interpersonal relationships. Thus, excessive preoccupation with online interactions due to FOMO can lead to neglect of real-life relationships. People might opt for online engagements over face-to-face interactions, leading to social isolation in the real world.

FOMO also often leads to constant social comparison, where individuals measure their lives against the curated, idealized versions presented on social media. This continuous comparison can negatively impact self-esteem and self-worth. FOMO can also lead to envy and inadequacy that can strain personal relationships as people constantly compare themselves to others.

Read more: Your Inner Spark: How Self-Esteem Ignites Productivity and Unleashes Your True Potential

Thus, FOMO can negatively impact personal relationships and social activities by reducing the quality of in-person interactions, driving over-commitment, and creating comparison and jealousy.

Deteriorating mental health

Research has established connections between FOMO and mental health, such as how it can contribute to feelings of depression and anxiety. Constantly fearing exclusion from online activities or social events leads to chronic stress and heightened anxiety levels.

People struggle to balance their online and offline lives because of the pressure to stay connected and engaged with digital platforms, leading to immense stress and burnout.

Another characteristic of FOMO is that it induces increased screen time (i.e., constantly checking social media for updates), particularly late at night, affecting sleep patterns and leading to sleep disturbances. The constant urge to check notifications or engage in online activities can keep individuals awake, resulting in insufficient and poor-quality sleep.

FOMO management for enhanced productivity

Knowing the negative consequences of FOMO, you must have certain practices or strategies to help mitigate its effects. Learning and then mindfully implementing these strategies can help overcome this phenomenon. Here are some strategies to support the process of overcoming FOMO and improving your productivity:

Digital detox and mindful technology use

Digital detox involves intentionally disconnecting from digital devices and online activities for a specified period. It helps you regain control over your digital habits, reduce FOMO-related stress, and improve overall well-being.

Read more: The Transformative Power of a Digital Detox

Mindful technology use also involves being present and intentional when using digital devices. This approach encourages you to establish boundaries, limit screen time, and use technology in ways that align with your values and priorities. It promotes productivity by enabling individuals to concentrate better and stay focused.

Task prioritization and goal clarity

Prioritizing tasks and setting clear goals allows you to focus on what truly matters, reducing the constant urge to check notifications and social media for fear of missing out. Prioritization will reduce your tendencies of FOMO, as your social life will likely not place high above your list.

By implementing this strategy, you can better manage their digital behaviors and reduce the impact of FOMO in your daily life. Thus, prioritizing tasks and setting clear goals enhances productivity by providing focus, boosting efficiency, and allocating time and energy wisely.

Cultivating the joy of missing out (JOMO)

The Joy of Missing Out (JOMO) is a mindset and lifestyle choice that encourages you to find happiness and contentment in the present moment, even if it means intentionally missing out on certain experiences or digital activities.

It represents a counterbalance to FOMO and emphasizes the importance of living mindfully, being present, and savoring the moments without constantly seeking validation or stimulation from online sources.

Thus, JOMO promotes prioritizing self-care and letting go of the constant need to be connected while creating stronger and more meaningful interactions. While specific JOMO studies may be limited, the principles of mindfulness, contentment, and savoring experiences are well-supported in research on well-being and mental health. Cultivating the joy of missing out also helps you build productivity habits by making room for self-care, being present, and indulging in mindfulness practices.

In conclusion

In today’s digital age, FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) has become a widespread phenomenon due to the influence of social media and constant connectivity. FOMO leads to anxiety and distractions, negatively impacting both work and personal life. It can also affect mental health and sleep patterns.

Strategies such as digital detox, mindful technology use, setting boundaries, prioritizing tasks, and cultivating the Joy of Missing Out (JOMO) are essential to overcome FOMO and boost productivity. These approaches help you find balance in your digital life, reduce distractions, and improve overall well-being.

Job search is an activity defined by scholars as a process that takes place to obtain a new job. It includes several phases: goal setting, preparing required documents, and navigating the job market. Then, the dynamic process moves to the application phase, which may lead to an interview.

The job seeker engages with the surrounding environment by making decisions, receiving feedback, and updating their plans to cope with contextual changes, such as global economic challenges.

So, an efficient job search is required so a job seeker can find a vacancy easier and smarter. In this article, you will learn the steps of job searching and how to search and apply for job opportunities productively.

Setting yourself up for success

Goal setting is the first step of your job-searching journey. From a self-regulatory perspective, job searching must be initiated with identifying goals.

These goals must be clear and attainable. For example, it is not logical to look for a job as a therapist, if you do not hold any related degrees. Remember that your goals must be SMART, where you can put achievable steps towards it.

Read more: Goal-Setting: Why You Should Set Goals

Crafting your personal brand

The job market is like any market. It is affected by the fundamental economic concepts of “supply and demand.” In other words, if you make yourself unique and scarce, your value in the job market will surge.

You can create your personal brand by identifying and highlighting your competencies, then making people know about them. Below are some helpful tips on how to promote your personal brand.

Building a compelling resume

Your resume is a perfect place to elaborate on your personal competencies. Your resume should describe your academic qualifications, professional experience, on-campus activities, skills, hobbies, and relevant courses.

A golden hint is to understand the different styles of resumes. Each country has its own style and rules. For example, the British model prefers attaching a photo to the document; however, the American one rejects this because it may have racial and ethnic implications.

Including a cover letter in your plans

You may be asked to attach a cover letter to your job application. This is a good opportunity to explain yourself more without repeating what you mentioned in your resume. In other words, you must elaborate on your skills, career plans, and potential contributions to the organization.

Boosting your online existence

Social media networking and online websites have become indispensable to your job search. According to a survey done by Pew Research Center in 2015, 79% of American job seekers searched for job opportunities using Internet searches.

Creating a LinkedIn profile is the most important step in boosting your online presence. Here are some tips to maximize benefits from LinkedIn:

Create an appealing profile

Set a professional profile picture, update all required information, and provide details on your previous experiences.

Network with people in your industry

Search for individuals who work in similar industries or the company where you aspire to work. You can do this by merely using a relevant keyword in your search bar.

Activate the job alert button

If you use the job search “Jobs” at the top of your LinkedIn homepage, try to narrow your search using location and job type, and use different keywords. Then, activate the job alert to receive a daily notification with the latest jobs posted using the criteria as mentioned above.

Use the LinkedIn Learning platform

It has a bunch of online mini-courses that support your career and enhance your skills.

And if you work in a creative industry such as graphic design, architecture, marketing, or a relevant field, consider building an online portfolio. In this portfolio, you need to include previous pieces of your work. You can attach the link to this portfolio to your resume and LinkedIn profile, too.

Finding job opportunities

During your job search journey, you may ask yourself how people are getting recruited for posts you never saw a job opening announcement for. The answer lies in the fact that there are two types of job markets: open and hidden.

The open job market is the announced job vacancies on social networking sites, organizations’ websites, newspapers, job fairs, job advertisements, etc.

While hidden job market refers to “existing recruitment opportunities that have not been the subject of an openly published job advertisement.” Recruitment in this job market depends mainly on networking.

Open markets are more competitive than hidden markets because they have a lot of candidates. So, trying to invade the hidden market can allow you to find a job quicker, and to do so, you can:

Leverage the internet. Look for potential recruiters and contact them directly with your resume and cover letter.

Explore your network. It is advantageous to explore networks with your current friends and contacts, as well as with past colleagues and tutors.

Expand your existing network. Attend events related to your industry, and keep yourself updated with all news in your field.

Negotiating a job offer

Once you are accepted in a job post, you become very excited about it to the extent that you may give up some benefits or accept a lower salary.

In this step, you may consider negotiating your job offer in case it does not meet your expectations. But you need to follow these steps first:

Step 1

Understand your rights and responsibilities in accordance with the labor law in terms of minimum salary, working conditions, insurance-related benefits, and safety.

Step 2

Be aware of the current status of your job market. For example, what is the salary range for employees in your region and sector? You can get advice from Glassdoor to explore relevant employers’ benefits and salary ranges.

Step 3

Finally, ask experts and human resources specialists in your field, then, decide to negotiate. Negotiation is a win-win situation. So, remember that you need to be both convincing and flexible.

Realizing the ups and downs

The job-searching journey is a mix of emotions, ups, downs, and insecurities. That is why scholars include emotions in the definition. “For most, job search is a highly autonomous, self-regulated, goal-directed, and proactive process. Especially under conditions of extended search, looking for work may involve a range of emotions for individuals as they cope with uncertainty, difficulty locating appropriate positions, the pain of rejection, and other challenges.”

Additionally, the long time of waiting for a response from the interviewer is a time full of uncertainty and expectations. Coping with these emotions is an essential part of your job-searching process. So you can keep yourself productive and efficient.

In conclusion

The journey of job searching may not be a short one. That is why you must prepare well for it through planning and evaluating. You must not lose hope and get disappointed with any rejections, but take them as an opportunity to learn from your mistakes, explore your potential, and develop yourself.

The biggest challenge in the current job market is competitiveness. You must regularly add value and worth to your personal and professional brand through courses, training, reading, and pursuing postgraduate studies. In a nutshell, if you want to find a job quickly, do not stick to one method or route.

Nobody can deny the impact of technology on productivity. It saves time, resources, and effort. But, the misuse and overuse of technology can harm your health and productivity.

APA defines digital addiction as the harmful effect of excessive use of technology. This abnormal use constitutes a daily habit that you cannot give up, and you will find psychological challenges if you try to control your usage.

Internet addiction, technology addiction, problematic internet use, computer addiction, pathological internet use, and internet use disorder are used interchangeably with digital addiction with, sometimes, slight differences.

But worry no more.

Through this article, you will learn to identify digital addiction, the symptoms and treatment of technology addiction, and how to utilize technology effectively.

Signs of digital addiction

If you experience digital addiction, you, and your loved ones, will probably notice some changes in your behavior.

Addiction is classified into two categories:

Substance addiction such as drugs and alcohol addiction

Behavioral addictions such as gambling, internet, sex, and shopping addiction

Many studies affirmed that the symptoms of both types of addiction are similar to a great extent. The internet, like drugs and alcohol, stimulates the hormone of happiness, dopamine, giving the user a sense of satisfaction.

The first step in treating digital addiction is identifying it and its symptoms. The major sign is not determined only by the number of hours spent using a smartphone, social media, or computer, but there are other serious symptoms such as:

Inability to control time spent using digital technology;

Suffering from withdrawal symptoms;

Feeling down and out of mood when you try to cut down using the internet;

Declining interest in work, studies, and social activities;

Escaping from reality and considering the internet as a refuge; and

Deliberate lying and concealing the truth to have extra time online.

All these symptoms shall negatively impact your productivity in multiple ways.

A study published in the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization found that digital addiction harms work productivity. It causes sleep disturbances, especially if you use it late at night. The reason behind this is exposure to the screen’s light at night, which “suppresses the production of melatonin, the ‘sleep’ hormone which regulates our sleep cycle.”

Read more: The Impact of Sleep on Productivity and How to Get Better Sleep

Being always busy and distracted with your smartphone will prevent you from completing your tasks on time. Every moment you decide to concentrate on your studies or work, you unconsciously explore social media or text a friend.

Strategies for overcoming digital addiction

Technology is used in everyday life and almost everything: work, communication, entertainment, education, and shopping. A major challenge behind giving up technology is it’s indispensability.

The best approach to overcoming addiction is gradually reducing digital device usage. Here are some tips to control using digital technology:

Setting boundaries and limits on device usage

Give yourself a minute to pause and consider whether you are wasting your time. Set clear boundaries between your work, personal life, and digital media usage.

You can start by forbidding yourself from using smartphones at certain times of the day. Do not start your day by checking messages and texts; do not go to bed while scrolling. Your day’s beginning and end must not include using digital devices.

Also, your mealtime must be dedicated to food and company only. Let your body digest and taste food without distraction.

Additionally, some applications may help you to cut down the number of hours you spend using the internet. They provide you with reminders and block you from using social media applications at specific times.

Examples of these apps include:

Freedom

BetBlocker

Forest App

YourHour

Siempo

Practicing mindfulness and meditation

Release stress and anxiety through mindfulness and meditation. Mindfulness is about paying attention and being aware of your surroundings and what is happening around you right now. It engages your emotions, feelings, body sensations, and self-talk.

Read more: Reaching a Higher Sense of Self Through Mindfulness

Meditation is the most well-known kind of mindfulness. It is defined as an act of self-regulation that focuses on training attention and awareness to bring mental processes under greater voluntary control, thereby fostering general mental well-being and development and/or specific capacities such as calmness, clarity, and concentration.

Finding alternative activities to replace screen time

Distract yourself and try enjoying something other than social media and the internet. Think about carrying a book while traveling. Hang out with friends and leave your smartphone at home. Devote time to your mental peace through meditation and relaxation. Take naps or attend some events.

In a nutshell, do whatever you love and enjoy, and regularly decrease screen time.

Seeking professional help if necessary

If your addiction is severe, you need to consult a therapist. Various techniques include motivational interviewing, group therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, or psychosocial therapy.

Most compulsive internet use is a consequence of underlying psychological risk. For example, a person may suffer from anxiety or depression and then resort to the virtual world to escape from negative feelings.

Tips for boosting online productivity

Although technology has become indispensable, we need to use it effectively and efficiently and be aware of any negative effects of its misuse. Some ways to boost productivity include:

Creating a daily schedule and routine

Track your daily activities. How much time do you spend scrolling through social media? How long do you walk or do physical activities? Then, modify your daily routine.

Prioritizing tasks and setting goals

While using digital technology, ask yourself the following:

Your purpose: Checking news, texting friends, playing games, looking for vacancies, or something else.

Devoted time: How much time should you spend in achieving your purpose? Should you text your friend all day or is 10 minutes enough?

Urgency and priority: Is there anything else that is prior to using tech? Do I miss a deadline? Do I need to call my family?

Leveraging technology to get ahead

Have you ever considered using digital technology to learn something new, get to know new people, or even explore your future career? Here are some things you can do:

Networking

Social media is not limited to Instagram and TikTok. There are also professional networking websites and applications. LinkedIn, for example, is a great source to connect with people in your industry and learn from their career paths.

Learning new things

The internet is rich with online resources that help you learn whatever you want. If you want to learn a new language, download Duolingo or Busuu. Prepare yourself for promotion and acquire new technical skills through Udacity and edX. Also, consider pursuing a MicroMaster’s degree online from Harvard or MIT.

Advancing your career

Digital technology gives you access to information that can advance your career. For example, being exposed to new vacancies daily on LinkedIn or Glassdoor will help you realize the skills you need.

In conclusion

Digital addiction impacts mental health, productivity, behavior, and physical health. It distracts you from your studies or work and may harm your social relationships.

On the other hand, one cannot simply give up using technology. Therefore, you need to effectively utilize digital technology to boost your productivity instead of inhibiting it because mindful use of technology is your best tool.

Motivation and productivity are two sides of the same coin. The former highly influences the latter but does not necessarily guarantee it.

Understanding the origins of motivation and how it impacts productivity can allow students and employers to reallocate efforts and incentives to achieve desirable outcomes.

In this article, you will learn the relationship between productivity and motivation, plus some tips and tricks to boost motivation.

Definition of motivation

“Moevre” is a Latin word that means to move; from there, the word motivation originated.

Motivation is the truck that pushes you towards achieving your goals.

There are a couple of motivation types that most therapists and researchers deal with:

Intrinsic motivation – Motivation that comes from your inner self. In other words, you love and enjoy what you do.

Extrinsic motivation – Motivation from external factors such as receiving payment or a gift.

Relationship between motivation and productivity

A study at the University of California has shown that employees’ productivity increases by 31% if they feel motivated. Consequently, these employees could achieve higher sales and be more creative.

Scientists argue that motivation impacts the striatum, a vital part of the brain. Other researchers suggest that it is linked with the memory parts of the brain.

Simply, motivation helps employees, students, and individuals as it enhances involvement and engagement with other teammates, encourages more effort toward task completion, reduces stress and anxiety, and develops levels of creativity and innovation.

How to boost productivity using motivation

Productivity is essential for achievement and task completion. Motivating yourself is one of the most important ways to be more productive.

Here are some helpful tips that can help you:

Set clear and attainable goals

It is worth noting that there is a difference between goals and motivation.

Goals are the desires you want to attain, while motivation is the inside power that pushes you toward them.

Your goals should follow the SMART criteria. They should be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound.

Read more: Goal-Setting: Why You Should Set Goals

The important thing is to keep your goals in view. You can write them on paper and stick them on the wall, fridge, car, desk, or wardrobe. So you will always remember them.

Get to know yourself

You must know what inhibits and motivates you to complete your tasks.

For example, a short conversation with a friend can release stress and recharge your energy. On the contrary, negative comments or useless gossiping can adversely impact your performance.

Grab a piece of paper, and write down the things and activities that motivate you.

Take care of your health

A healthy lifestyle matters. If you are exhausted, the likelihood of you getting any work done would be relatively low.

Keep in mind that sleep is crucial to your motivation and productivity. Rest for an adequate number of hours to recharge your body and be ready for all challenges.

Always have balanced meals to keep the “feel-good” hormone at a healthy level. This hormone is called dopamine. It is linked to the brain’s reward system and impacts your productivity and motivation.

Balanced meals must include tyrosine and magnesium, which your body converts to dopamine. Examples include poultry, watermelon, chocolate, apples, and peas.

Don’t exaggerate using physical rewards

Physical rewards, especially monetary ones, can boost students’ and employees’ motivation and productivity. However, they are not the only motivators.

Surprisingly, some research, such as Muarayma’s study (2018), show that overusing extrinsic rewards may have reverse results. They may reduce motivation and productivity. The same study also found that students could memorize information better if intrinsically motivated.

Incentives to motivate employees’ performance are not only monetary. They can be: appreciation, training, engagement, or observation.

Understand that motivation alone is not enough

If you believe that motivation in and of itself is sufficient to generate productivity, that notion is not true.

Your willingness is not enough. You have to take action, persist, and be able to motivate yourself to act again when you are bored and depressed. The desired action can be achieved using the steps mentioned above.
