Global well-being concepts you should implement

Before discussing specific cultural practices, it’s important to consider the big picture. Many of these well-being beliefs have a common thread: they focus on balance, harmony, and connection.

These ideas, whether about seeking inner peace, strengthening relationships, or living in peace with nature, are universal. Throughout time and culture, a priority on well-being has consistently helped individuals. So, by adopting these behaviors, you can, too, join in on these universal traditions.

It is critical to note that these well-being practices are not only defined in tradition but also proved by studies. Research confirms that mindfulness, connection with nature, and a sense of purpose are necessary for living a healthy and happy life. These global concepts provide frameworks for incorporating these elements into your daily routine.

You can start by exploring these wellness tips from around the world:

Hygge from Denmark

The Danish concept of hygge (pronounced “hoo-gah”) represents the skill of creating a welcoming, comfortable, and pleasant environment. It’s about appreciating the little things in life and finding happiness in the ordinary.

This Danish design idea seeks to create warm, inviting places that enhance your spirit. To bring hygge into your home, follow these simple steps:

Cozy corners. With natural light, warm colors, and soft textures, create a cozy room that invites relaxation. Include your favorite books, plush pillows, and warm lighting. Whether it’s a reading spot by the window or a corner of your living room, make it a place to unwind and relax.

Mindful moments. Enjoy the little things in life, such as a cup of tea or a good book. Do this by being in the present moment and relaxing without distractions. These mindful moments can improve your overall well-being and minimize stress.

Quality time. Make spending time with loved ones a top priority, and enjoy each other’s company. To improve your relationship, plan regular events like game nights or monthly family dinners. These experiences build connections and leave lasting memories, boosting happiness and a sense of belonging.

Wabi-sabi from Japan

Japan has a lovely approach to accepting imperfection called wabi-sabi. It’s about accepting life’s simplicity, cherishing the brief moments, and finding beauty in the imperfections. It’s similar to allowing oneself to be beautifully flawed.

Wabi-sabi is based on Zen Buddhism and Japanese culture and urges you to accept flaws as part of an object’s or person’s unique story.

It asks you to mentally let go of your need for perfection and learn to be at ease with your imperfections. In terms of spirituality, wabi-sabi urges acceptance of the present moment and pushes you to accept life’s changes, finding beauty in the short-lived nature of existence. Here are some ways you can incorporate this in your life:

Declutter your home. Simplify your space by decluttering to attain peace of mind. Learn to let go of things that are no longer useful to you and concentrate on what is truly important. Doing so will quiet your surroundings and help you clear your head.

Natural touch. Design your home using natural elements like wood, stone, and plants. A variety of indoor plants, a stone vase, or a grainy wood table help to create a calm and pleasant mood.

Cherish imperfections. Wabi-sabi will teach you to see the beauty in the handmade and flawed. Embrace objects with unique imperfections, such as a handmade blanket with uneven stitching or a broken piece of pottery. These flaws give your environment character and convey a story.

Feng shui from China

The ancient Chinese art of feng shui is all about bringing balance and harmony into your surroundings. By designing your environment according to specific principles, you can improve energy flow and increase well-being.

While feng shui is extensively practiced and valued in many cultures for its concepts of harmony and balance, there’s little scientific data on its direct impact on health and well-being. In one study, people who applied feng shui concepts to their bedrooms reported much better sleep quality.

Even though feng shui’s depths can seem challenging, you can put a few fundamental ideas into practice immediately. Through the improvement of energy flow, or “chi,” feng shui can raise your general level of well-being.

Here are some tips on how to apply feng shui concepts in your house to create balance and harmony.

Clutter-free space. A clutter-free environment is essential for good feng shui, as it blocks energy flow and causes chaos. To begin, organize your belongings and get rid of everything unnecessary. Having neat storage spaces and clean surfaces promotes calmness and clarity of thought, which opens the door for good energy to flow.

Front door focus. The front doors are the main entry point for good energy into your house, so keep it tidy, well-lit, and welcoming. Make sure it’s free of obstacles and in good repair. Add a fresh coat of paint, a doormat, or potted plants for a positive atmosphere.

Mindful placement. The way your furniture is arranged impacts how energy moves through your house. Place sofas and chairs facing the entrance to create a feeling of security. Don’t place furniture in front of the door to avoid obstructing flow. Use rounded edges rather than sharp corners to create a more harmonious setting.

The Mediterranean diet from Southern Europe

Mediterranean people tend to live long and healthy lives because of their healthy lifestyle. A study done within the blue zones found that the Mediterranean diet plays an important role in improving lifespan. This diet is about how you eat, not what you choose to eat — sharing meals with family and friends, tasting flavors, and appreciating food.

The Mediterranean diet, which suggests whole grains, fresh fruit, and lean protein sources like fish, has been shown to have many positive health benefits. This dietary strategy promotes balanced eating habits while promoting fresh, seasonal items.

Plant-powered. The Mediterranean diet focuses on plant-based meals high in essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They include fresh and colorful fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, bell peppers, spinach, and citrus fruits. These colorful foods not only give color to your meals, but they also provide a wealth of nutrients that promote general wellness.

Whole grains. Use whole grains like quinoa, brown rice, and whole wheat bread instead of processed carbohydrates. Whole grains contain more nutrients and fiber, allowing you to feel fuller for longer and maintain stable energy levels. They also help with digestion, lower the risk of chronic diseases, and improve heart health.

Healthy fats. Your diet should contain almonds, avocados, and olive oil. These good fats promote general health and heart health, in contrast to processed foods that contain unhealthy fats. Avocados and nuts include important oils, vitamins, and minerals that promote brain function and satiety; olive oil contains antioxidants.

Siesta from Spain

The Spanish habit of taking a brief afternoon nap, known as the siesta, has grown in popularity due to its many positive health effects. This noon break is more than just a chance to unwind; it’s a tried-and-true method for recharging and improving your overall health. Here’s how you can use the power of the siesta to improve your energy and mood.

Power nap. Even a simple 20-minute snooze can make a huge difference. A short power nap improves alertness, cognitive performance, and mood. It’s a refreshing pause that allows you to face the rest of your day with newfound energy.

Sleep sanctuary. To get the most out of your sleep, create a sleep-friendly setting. Use blackout curtains to keep your room dark, quiet with earplugs or a white noise machine, and cool to a suitable temperature. This setup will help you fall asleep sooner and have a more restful sleep.

Consistent schedule. For the best results, follow a regular nap schedule by taking your siesta at the same time every day, ideally between 1 and 3 PM. This helps balance your internal clock and aligns with your body’s natural energy dip. You will have an easier time falling asleep and waking up feeling rested.

Combine siesta with mindfulness practices. Before falling asleep, consider doing a few minutes of mindfulness or deep breathing exercises. This can help you relax and fall asleep more easily. After your siesta, you may feel physically refreshed and mentally recharged, with increased clarity and peace.

Imagine walking into a place filled with lush greenery and beautiful flowers, a place where you can see the sunlight passing gently through the leaves. As these amazing views surround you, a deep sensation of peace pours over you, leaving you completely refreshed and at ease. This is not just a scene from some surreal movie; it might be your life, even in the heart of the city.

Living in a city has advantages, but the continuous hustle and concrete dullness can leave you looking for a touch of nature. It is hard to enjoy peace when surrounded by tall buildings and ongoing noise. But even in a small space, what if there was a way to bring a little piece of heaven to your door? Enter the concept of sensory gardens for urban dwellers.

Don’t let limited space stop you. This article explores sensory garden ideas and teaches you to balance your senses, from soothing smells to calm textures. So, put down the headphones and the continuous scrolling; it’s time to reconnect with nature in a way that is as unique as you are.

Basics of sensory gardens

Sensory gardens are specifically designed landscapes that engage all five senses. sight, smell, sound, touch, and even taste (with edible plants!).

Adding elements that engage all the senses leads to a rich and complete experience. Unlike usual gardens that might focus only on looks or productivity, sensory gardens seek to engage the senses to promote relaxation, mental focus, and emotional well-being. Sensory gardens have the following key features.

Sight. Bright colors and various plant textures that enchant the sight.

Smell. Fragrant plants and herbs offer olfactory experiences.

Sound. Elements such as rustling foliage, water fountains, or wind chimes offer relaxing audio backgrounds.

Touch. Soft, textured flora and tactile surfaces are inviting to touch.

Taste. Edible plants and herbs that can be gathered and consumed.

These unique features make sensory gardens ideal for city settings, where natural sensory experiences are often limited.

While building such a garden requires a lot of time, effort, and creative thinking, but the benefits can be great. So, is it worth the investment? Absolutely. Here are some benefits of sensory gardening in a community or personal surroundings.

Reduced stress

Among the most known advantages of sensory gardens is their ability to reduce stress. These gardens’ soothing sights, sounds, and smells can reduce stress levels, promoting relaxation and mental well-being. Imagine walking out onto your apartment balcony, where the slow drip of a water feature and the soothing aroma of lavender present a peaceful escape from the rush of daily life.

This design style is more than simply looking beautiful; it can also function as a therapeutic escape, improving your emotional condition.

Furthermore, including sensory gardens in your daily routine might have a big impact on how you manage stress. Plant care may be extremely calming, whether in a modest backyard or a roof garden design. Focusing on sensory experiences, such as the flavor of fresh herbs, allows you to practice mindfulness while being grounded in the present moment and away from daily problems.

Improved mood

Nature has been shown to positively affect mood, and sensory gardens are a great example of how connecting with beautiful colors, fragrant flowers, and quiet noises can boost your spirits. When you build a sensory garden, you incorporate items that engage the five senses (sight, smell, sound, touch, and taste) into your urban environment. This not only transforms your surroundings but also creates a lively atmosphere that is helpful to happiness.

For example, seeing lively flowers on your front landscape design can be welcoming. Plants such as marigolds, petunias, and snapdragons give vibrant color to even the smallest apartment balcony, front yard, or extra space.

Enhanced sensory awareness

Sensory gardens allow you to experience the world more mindfully. By focusing on the sights, sounds, textures, and scents that surround you, you can strengthen your connection to the present. This increased sensory awareness is especially useful in modern city life, where the fast pace can easily dull our senses.

This technique allows you to appreciate minor details and improves your overall sensory experience. Garden design for small gardens, such as container gardening or hanging gardens, can be customized to provide rich sensory experiences while using limited areas best.

Planning your urban sensory garden

Now that you’re excited about the possibilities, let’s get your hands dirty (literally!) Here’s a step-by-step guide to planning your very own urban sensory garden.

Assessing your space

Begin by measuring the available space for your sensory garden. Whether you have a little backyard, a balcony, or a rooftop, understanding the measurements and qualities of your space will help you make design decisions.

Small backyard. Create distinct sensory zones using a variety of plants and objects.

Urban balcony. Hang and grow plants vertically to make the most of your area.

Rooftop. Check for roof strength and use container gardening to avoid damage.

Choosing plants and elements

This is where the fun begins! You can pick plants and decorations that are pleasing to your senses, transforming your home into a personal paradise. Look at the vivid colors, different styles, and pleasant scents that will spread throughout your garden. Each plant and piece you choose adds a unique touch, creating a balanced and welcoming environment. Dive in, explore the options, and create your ideal garden getaway.

Sight. Flowers in bright colors such as red, orange, and purple will enhance visual attention. Plants with different textures, such as airy ferns and green begonias, provide a visually appealing atmosphere.

Smell. Aromatic herbs such as lavender, rosemary, and mint can fill your garden with calming scents. Scented flowers such as roses, jasmine, and hyacinths provide an extra layer of fragrance.

Sound. Plants with rustling leaves, like bamboo or ornamental grasses swaying in the breeze, can produce soothing sounds. You can also add a tiny water feature for the soothing sound of flowing water.

Touch. Plants with unique textures, such as lamb’s ear (soft and fuzzy) and artistic grasses (tough and feathery), allow for tactile exploration.

Taste (optional). If your space allows, consider using edible herbs and fruits to add a flavor layer to your sensory garden.

Incorporating design techniques for small spaces

Creative and strategic planning methods are important when designing for small spaces in cities.

The limited nature of city surroundings requires creative solutions that make every square foot useful and pleasing to the eye. Even the most limited places may be transformed into welcoming and functional spaces by including smart design features and using space-saving measures. Here are different practical solutions for making the most of tiny city surroundings.

Vertical gardening. Use vines, wall planters, and elevated plans to cultivate climbing plants while conserving ground space.

Container gardening. Use a variety of containers to make a portable and multipurpose garden. Containers can be moved and adjusted to meet your needs.

Layering plants. To create thickness and visual interest, arrange plants in layers, taller in the back and shorter in the front.

Incorporating non-plant elements

Get ready to boost your gardening experience by adding non-organic elements! While plants give life and color, non-organic items improve your sensory experience. When carefully chosen and strategically arranged, these accessories can transform your garden into a haven of peace and delight. Here are some creative ways to introduce them.

Water features. A little fountain, birdbath, or even a simple water basin can provide a peaceful sound while attracting wildlife.

Tactile pathways. Use smooth pebbles, gravel, or wooden planks to construct pathways that encourage discovery and interaction.

Seating areas. Include comfortable seating to encourage visitors to spend time in the garden, reflect, and enjoy the sensory stimulation.

Additional tips and ideas

But the journey does not stop there. Beyond the basics of plant selection, small-space design techniques, and the use of non-organic elements, one can exercise an endless amount of creativity. Here are additional suggestions and sensory garden ideas to inspire your urban oasis.

Lighting. Set up solar-powered garden lights to improve the visual appeal and make the space usable at night.

Mirrors. Well-placed mirrors may make a tiny garden appear larger and provide a sense of surprise.

Aromatherapy. Use essential oils and scented candles to enhance the olfactory experience.

Interactive things. Include things such as herb gardens where you may pick leaves to smell or taste, as well as touchable water features.

In conclusion

Creating an urban sensory garden transforms your living area into a private haven that improves overall health.

It is not just adding more greenery. Sensory gardens engage all five senses, offering a place to escape from the stresses of modern life as well as a space for mindfulness and meditation.

A sensory garden can transform your living space, whether you want to improve your mental and physical health, establish a community place, or simply take in nature’s beauty. With these strategies and approaches, even the smallest places in cities may be converted into lush, sensory-rich havens. Now is a great time to start your sensory garden project.

Biophilic design is the key to adding nature to building interiors. Its pioneer, Stephen R. Kellert, developed a framework that emphasized the importance of human needs to connect with nature. When implemented, biophilic interiors can improve people’s physical and mental health.

This article will guide you in understanding biophilic design, its principles, and the benefits it can bring to improve people’s well-being.

What is the meaning of “biophilic”?

Biophilic or biophilia originated from the Greek language, composed of two words, bio (translated as life) and philia (translated as friendly feeling toward/tendency toward). Thus, biophilia means a friendly feeling towards life or a tendency towards life.

The etymology of biophilia is similar to Edward O. Wilson’s idea of the biophilia hypothesis. He interpreted biophilia as the inherent emotional connection between humans and other living things.

Understanding biophilic design better

The biophilia hypothesis is the core idea of biophilic design. This concept suggests that humans have a strong desire for nature. It could affect their feelings, thoughts, creativity, and spiritual growth.

By applying the biophilia hypothesis, biophilic designs reflect people’s innate desire to connect with nature. Its grand purpose is to enable people to experience meaningful connections with nature in the built environment.

Throughout more than 99% of the history of the human species, people physiologically evolved in an adaptive response to natural forces. Hence, applying biophilic design can enhance nature’s effects on one’s health and well-being.

Principles of biophilic design

The five fundamental principles in biophilic design are:

A biophilic design requires continual and recurring interaction with nature.

A biophilic design focuses on people’s adaptive responses to environments that have improved people’s health, fitness, and well-being.

A biophilic design fosters emotional ties to specific environments and locations.

A biophilic design fosters beneficial interactions between people and the natural world, building a more profound sense of connection to and responsibility for the communities.

A biophilic design fosters connected, integrated, and mutually reinforcing architectural solutions.

Types of experiences

If these principles are implemented well, there will be three types of nature experience.:

Direct

Direct experience of nature refers to physical contact with the natural elements in the building. These elements include light, air, water, plants, animals, weather, landscapes, ecosystems, and fire.

Indirect

Indirect experience of nature refers to experiencing nature through representations or imitations, such as artwork or home decor made of organic materials like wood or wool.

Spatial

Experience of space and place refers to spatial attributes in nature that have been discovered to enhance people’s health and well-being. These features may include:

The ability to see into the distance while still feeling protected (prospect and refuge),

Intricate and organized structures (organized complexity),

The ability to move around and easily navigate (mobility and wayfinding),

A sense of a cohesive and integrated space,

Clear and understandable connections between spaces, and

Cultural and ecological connections to a place

Relationship with mind and body

Successful biophilic design implementation ought to have a variety of positive effects on people’s bodies, minds, and behaviors. Here are some of the benefits of biophilic designs.

Physiological response

Nature is often associated with relaxation. This claim is supported by past studies that have investigated it. Yin, et al. (2020) reported that biophilic interiors could ease participants’ physiological stress and psychological anxiety levels.

Zhang, et al. (2017) highlighted a specific physical benefit. They found that indoor interiors made of wood can lower blood pressure.

Cognitive function

Many pieces of research have shown biophilic design interventions are effective in improving people’s cognitive skills.

One study discovered that participants in a room with plants, bamboo floors, and windows to see scenery had better short-term memory by 14% compared to participants in a room with no windows and no indoor plants.

Another study highlighted that enclosed rooms with biophilic elements could improve creativity.

A case study from Miller & Burton (2020) showed that when a biophilic design is integrated into the elders’ sedentary lifestyle, their lives can be more meaningful. This is made possible by nature-like interiors, outdoor gardens, and welcoming accessibility for neighbors to visit and interact with the elders.

Biophilic design examples

Check out these examples of bringing nature indoors!

Biophilic Classroom

An experiment applying biophilic design in a classroom proved that the students achieved higher test scores than students in the non-biophilic classroom.

Determan, et al. (2019) designed a biophilic classroom with three striking features. The first feature is the garden of evergreens and deciduous plants outside the classroom, visible through the windows.

The second feature is the shades with tree shadow patterns on them. The window shades can roll automatically to adjust to the classroom needs, allowing the lighting to have dynamic movements in the classroom and improving students’ level of concentration.

The last feature is the visible biomorphic patterns on the floors and walls, strengthening the nature vibe in the classroom.

A Cloud in the Office: Glumac Shanghai

Biophilic design can improve well-being through increased satisfaction, a better sense of control, and a stronger connection to nature. An example from an office setting shows that sufficient daylight, access to outdoor views, and the presence of plants can improve employees’ well-being.

One of Terrapin Bright Green’s case studies is a biophilic office in Shanghai, China. The renovated Glumac office features a visually striking Kvadrat cloud installation that can also absorb sounds.

The design of the Kvadrat cloud is one of many symbolic references to traditional Chinese culture and nature, such as the lucky clouds, swirling patterns on the glass entry door and garden stools, and a carpet pattern resembling the flow of water or cirrus clouds.

Hotel-as-Garden: Parkroyal Singapore

Another example from Terrapin Bright Institute’s project is a hotel in Singapore.

The most salient feature of Parkroyal Singapore is the visual connection with nature. There are curvilinear “sky gardens” with native tropical plants encircling the hotel’s exterior every four levels. The hotel’s E-shaped floor plan maximizes the number of guest rooms with views of Hong Lim Park, the hotel’s sky gardens, or both.

The extensive use of indoor living plants strengthens the visual link with nature. Wood panel walls of the lobby are covered with vines, and flowering plant beds are in full bloom.

In conclusion

Now you know: buildings can be alive! Biophilic designs offer the possibility for people to live closer to nature. Naturally, it fosters people’s connection to nature and promotes well-being.
