You’re stepping into the world of adulthood. Responsibilities keep piling up, yet you are still unsure about who you are and what you truly want. This uncertainty leaves you feeling anxious, lost, and stuck – a quarter-life crisis.

So, how can you overcome quarter-life crisis and move forward with clarity and assurance?

This article explores the psychology of a quarter-life crisis and discusses how hope can be a powerful tool in overcoming it. Keep reading to discover how to embrace uncertainty and navigate your 20s with confidence.

What is a quarter-life crisis?

Emma sat in her bedroom, staring at her laptop screen. Tabs for job applications, career advice articles, and self-help videos were open, but nothing seemed to help. She sighed, closing her eyes for a moment.

She glanced at her social media feed. Her friends were getting promotions, traveling the world, or starting businesses. Meanwhile, she felt stuck. She thought, “I feel lost in my twenties.”

This is what a quarter-life crisis looks like.

This is transitioning from a comfortable phase to facing real-world responsibilities in your 20s. Both internal struggles and external expectations influence this phase, triggering fear, frustration, and a lack of direction. An early-life crisis makes you anxious about the future.

A quarter-age crisis is different from a midlife crisis. Midlife crises occur between the late 30s and early 50s, when victims face family dynamics, career shifts, and health issues.

While in a quarter crisis, you search for yourself in early adulthood. You question your career choices, relationships, and overall life direction. You feel pressured to have everything figured out.

The link between quarter-life crisis, uncertainty, and hope

Navigating this quarter-life period often means grappling with uncertainty. You start asking questions like:

“What will I do after graduating?”

“What career path should I choose?”

“Will my friends stay with me in the future?”

“What if I never get married?”

“Am I on the right path in life?”

Those thoughts will bring you doubt and even frustration as you try to figure out your place in this world. Yet, those feelings are entirely normal.

Hope plays a crucial role in this process. With a hopeful mindset, you can reframe challenges as stepping stones toward self-discovery and fulfillment.

Intolerance of uncertainty and its impact

Uncertainty is a natural part of life. For example:

Waiting for the result after a job interview,

Unexpected expenses, such as laptop repairs, medical bills, or

Wondering how your romantic relationship will turn out.

Even so, many people struggle to cope with uncertainty.

This situation is called intolerance of uncertainty. It means feeling very uncomfortable with not knowing what will happen. It comes with negative thoughts about uncertain situations and strong mental and physical reactions to them.

Uncertainty is a significant factor in quarter-life crises. After all, navigating significant life transitions in young adults can be complicated and overwhelming.

This way, uncertainty evokes negative emotional states. This ambiguous period causes anger, anxiety, and sadness as you’re expected to make important decisions, such as whom to marry and where to work.

Hope as a stabilizing force

Even though it is hard to rise during tough times, it’s still possible.

Hope, in psychology, is defined as a mix of character strength, emotion, motivation, and a coping tool for difficult life events. Hope involves believing in positive outcomes, even in challenging situations.

Hope acts as a buffer in your difficult times — such as in quarter-life crises. When you cultivate hope, you also nurture positive thoughts that can drive personal growth and contribute to your overall well-being.

Reframing uncertainty as opportunity

Instead of fearing uncertainty, shift your perspective to see uncertainty as an opportunity for growth. Learning to tolerate uncertainty builds resilience, and you can do this through hope.

Uncertainty isn’t always a bad thing. It can actually be a form of “good stress”. Moments of uncertainty let you slow down, assess possibilities, and make more thoughtful decisions. It also fosters creativity and open-minded thinking.

You do not need to strive for perfection. Perfectionism is often driven by anxiety and low self-esteem, which can stifle both creativity and joy.

In clinical psychology, individuals with anxiety are often treated by increasing their tolerance for uncertainty. Those with a high intolerance for uncertainty perceive it as a threat, while those who can tolerate it view uncertainty as a challenge — one that can ultimately enhance their quality of life.

Practical steps to overcome quarter-life crisis

Hope is a very useful trait to cultivate as a young adult navigating a quarter-life crisis. But, it’s very infrequently discussed.

How do you create hope? What things should you do? How can you embrace your imperfections and cultivate a growth mindset?

Here are some practical tips to help you overcome:

Self-reflection and understanding your values

Self-reflection is a powerful tool for gaining clarity in life. Understanding your values will help you make decisions that align with who you truly are.

One effective method for deep self-exploration is journaling. Write down your thoughts, fears, and aspirations. It will reveal patterns in your emotions and priorities.

Ask yourself:

What truly brings me joy?

What kind of impact do I want to make?

What truly matters when I make decisions?

Taking action despite uncertainty

In uncertain situations, you still do not need to wait for the “perfect” moment before taking action. The longer you wait, the more anxious you feel.

The key to moving forward is to take baby steps.

If you’re anxious about school or your future career, do something small to address that future. Take online classes to explore new skills, reach someone who can be your mentor, or set a short-term goal. These can create momentum and build your confidence.

It is okay if you find errors in this process of self-discovery. But, try again and again. Each attempt, whether successful or not, provides insight into your potential paths forward.

Building resilience through hope and mindset shifts

Cultivating resilience starts with mindset shifts. You can view this condition of uncertainty as a space for growth rather than fear. Create new possibilities and stay hopeful.

Reframe your negative thoughts to encourage adaptability toward change. Here are some examples:

Negative thought: “I’m a failure because I don’t have my life figured out.”

Reframe: “Feeling lost in my twenties is normal. Many successful people once felt uncertain, too. This phase is part of my journey, not a sign of failure.”

Negative thought: “What if I make the wrong decision?”

Reframe: “No decision is final. I can learn and adjust directions if needed. Growth comes from trial and error.”

Negative thought: “I’m stuck, and nothing will get better.”

Reframe: “Life is always changing. Just because I feel stuck now doesn’t mean I always will. The important thing is that I’ve tried, and I will keep trying. I believe the time will come.”

You can start creating your own reframes!

In conclusion

Nobody warned you that adulthood is going to be this tough.

But it’s okay. You can overcome it.

Uncertainty in this phase is an inevitable part of life, so it is okay to feel stuck and anxious.

However, just because the path ahead is uncertain doesn’t mean you won’t find your way. Instead of fearing the unknown, start embracing it. Take small steps, trust the process, and believe that even in uncertainty, you are growing.

Overcoming the quarter-life crisis with hope is like walking in a dim light.

That tiny light represents hope — the belief that even though you can’t see the whole picture yet, each step forward will gradually reveal the way.

Hope reminds you that challenges are temporary. Hope allows you to seek new opportunities, take risks, and learn from failures. Then, clarity will come with time.

Your 20s are just the beginning. Keep walking, and the light will get brighter!

You may have a goal that you’ve always wanted to achieve. You work hard towards it and remain persistent in the face of setbacks. However, despite relentless pursuit, success is elusive. You start to lose motivation and keep questioning yourself, leading to a cycle of stress and frustration.

At this point, you need emotional drivers to keep you motivated. That’s where emotions like hope, desire, and admiration come into play. These emotions can be powerful catalysts, helping you overcome setbacks and push toward personal growth and success.

This article delves into harnessing hope, desire, and admiration as powerful motivators to achieve goals. It discusses the unique contributions of each emotion and offers practical approaches to balancing them with realistic expectations. By tapping into these emotions, you can use your goal-setting as fuel for a more fulfilling and successful life.

Ready to unlock your potential? Dive in and learn how to leverage these emotions for greater success below.

The role of hope, desire, and admiration in achieving goals

Before learning how these emotions can help you achieve your goals, understanding what they mean is a cornerstone of this learning process.

By learning the nature of these emotions, you can effectively use them to build resilience, maintain focus, and foster a positive mindset. These are crucial in overcoming challenges and staying committed to your goals. Learn about each one of them below.

Hope

Rick A. Snyder, a leading researcher well-known for his Hope Theory, defined hope as “the perceived capability to derive pathways to desired goals and motivate oneself via agency thinking to use those pathways.”

By pathways, he means that high-hope people will be able to generate usable routes, including identifying alternative routes that are feasible to attain. Likewise, by agency thinking, he meant the kind of thinking that motivates high-hope people to keep working toward their goals. This is because they believe they can find ways to succeed, unlike those with lower hopes.

Thus, hope is not merely an emotion but a structured cognitive process that drives goal-setting and goal-achievement behaviors. It enables you to envision your future goals, identify potential pathways and obstacles in the achievement process, and maintain motivation to persevere even after setbacks.

Desire

Desire can be loosely defined as wishes or wants one truly holds. It means longing for something and feeling satisfied upon achieving it.

Desire can be defined by how motivated you are to achieve a big goal by taking specific actions. It is a motivational factor that enables you to translate your intention into action and ensures you stick with focal behaviors that push you toward goal achievement.

In short, desire is an emotional energy that fuels your intention toward your goals — a powerful factor in personal motivation.

However, you might need something else; something to inspire and guide you in pursuing goals, detailed in the next section.

Admiration

Admiration is a uniquely human emotion that facilitates social learning and drives people to emulate their role models. It is characterized by positive feelings about other’s excellence and the impetus to imitate their skills, talent, accomplishment, or quality of excellence, leading to self-improvement.

When you admire someone, you are inspired to learn from them and feel motivated to achieve as much as they do. This emotion keeps you energized and helps you perceive your dreams as attainable.

Now that you know the three components crucial for achieving your goal, you’ll learn how they uniquely contribute to goal attainment. Dive more into this article to find out how.

The connection between emotions and goals

Hope, desire, and admiration are powerful transformative forces that push you toward successful goal attainment. Due to its motivational component, each emotion uniquely directs your behavior to achieve your goals, even the ones that seem unattainable. The question is: How?

As mentioned earlier, hope can strategically drive your goal-setting and execution. It provides the mental framework to set higher goals, think creatively about overcoming obstacles, and nurture motivation in goal pursuit despite setbacks.

Moreover, hope is crucial in maintaining perseverance and resilience in pursuing long-term goals. In a longitudinal and experimental study, a researcher from Tilburg University showed that when experiencing hope, people are more likely to succeed as they are not as affected by negative feedback and persist in pursuing seemingly unattainable goals.

Thus, hope has a buffering and building effect that can push you toward successful goal attainment.

On the other hand, desires serve as a powerful motivator force in goal pursuit. They are the things that can motivate a person, transform an intention into concrete actions, and provide the emotional energy to pursue goals.

Additionally, desire helps you clarify the “why” of your goal purpose, fueling your initiation to action and making you commit to achieving your desired outcomes. This is especially crucial for conflicting goals.

Lastly, admiration can boost motivation by providing role models and benchmarks for success. It can cultivate self-efficacy and encourage individuals to strive for personal growth by learning from others’ achievements.

Together, these emotions create a powerful trio that aids in achieving goals. Therefore, effectively harnessing these emotions can lead to personal development and goal accomplishment.

Leveraging strong emotions to achieve goals

You can use these emotions to achieve goals through actionable, scientific-based practices. By balancing these emotions, you can remain motivated while maintaining realistic expectations and avoiding the pitfalls of over-idealization or burnout.

Here are practical ways to optimize your goal achievement using the three emotions.

Cultivating hope by visualizing success

Visualization is a cognitive process of creating a mental image of a desired outcome. It involves imagining specific scenarios, actions, or experiences associated with achieving a particular goal. By imagining how you will successfully reach your goals, you feel the sense of hope and optimism that gives you the mental energy to pursue whatever you want.

There are various ways to practice it, including mental contrasting. This technique involves visualizing your goals and contrasting them with current reality and potential obstacles. This technique lets you mentally experience your success and helps you avoid the drawbacks of overcommitting to unattainable goals.

Oettingen and Reininger, authors of the study linked above, introduced a framework that consists of four steps to practice mental contrasting. That is:

Wish. Identify a meaningful goal you want to achieve.

Outcome. Visualize the best possible outcome if the goal is attained.

Obstacle. Pinpoint what internal or external barriers could prevent you from reaching your goal.

Plan. Create an if-then plan to address each obstacle (e.g., “If I encounter X, then I will do Y”).

Harnessing desire by identifying your passion

To ensure successful goal attainment, align them with your values. It means you focus on what truly matters and develop it to strong desired goals. Once it sets, you can gain the benefit of the powerful force of desire to achieve your goals.

Start by identifying a meaningful goal that genuinely interests you. If you’re struggling to find what truly intrigues you, reflect and ask yourself some questions:

What do I love doing even though I am not good at it and don’t get much reward?

What are the things that make me lose track and become deeply engaged?

What would I regret not having pursued or experienced at the end of my life?

Last, combine your strongest desire with intrinsic motivation, such as personal growth or skill mastery, to double the powerful effect of desire.

Building admiration by finding and engaging with role models

Now you have your most desired goal. To realize your dream, you can look up to individuals who have achieved similar goals and draw inspiration from their journey. These people don’t have to be public figures or celebrities; they can be your family members, closest relatives, or friends.

Here are some steps you can take to build admiration:

Identify who you want to admire. List people who share the same desire as yours. Identify what qualities make them stand out and will help you achieve your goals.

Analyze their journey. Gather as much information as possible about their habits, values, and supportive environments that contribute to their success, and analyze how you can apply it to your journey.

Reflect on your choice. Continuously evaluate the quality of your role models. Blindly following them without reflecting on your values will lead to unhealthy admiration.

Balancing emotions with realistic strategies

To harness these emotions effectively, focus on developing resilience and adaptive planning in your goal pursuit. How to do so?

Set adaptive goals. Start by setting clear, flexible goals that are not rigidly tied to one specific outcome.

Reassess hope and desire. As you progress, reflect on your initial hopes and desires and assess whether they align with your evolving circumstances.

Leverage admiration. Use admiration as a guide, think of role models who have adapted their paths, and incorporate their strategies into your approach.

Transform setbacks into growth. When encountering setbacks, use hope to maintain optimism and reframe desire into a growth mindset focused on progress.

Refine admiration. Regularly evaluate your admiration for others, focusing on their ability to adapt and persevere rather than their final achievements.

This balanced emotional approach helps you remain focused, adjust plans without losing motivation, and stay resilient in facing challenges.

In conclusion

Hope, desire, and admiration are powerful motivational factors that can help you overcome obstacles and stay committed to your goals. When used together, they provide the resilience needed to navigate setbacks and adapt to changing circumstances.

By harnessing these emotions, you can cultivate motivation, reframe challenges, and pursue growth more effectively. Reflect on how these emotions influence your journey and incorporate them into your goal-setting.

Take the first step by embracing their potential and applying these insights to achieve your success.

When life is easy and things go according to plan, people often find themselves feeling hopeful about the future. However, when things get hard and you’re facing difficulties in life and an overwhelming sense of loss, it can also be easy to feel that the situation will not change and that nothing can be done about it. That feeling of having no desire for the future nor the expectation to get there is hopelessness or lack of hope.

Hopelessness is the feeling that things will not change for the better and the belief that the person is unable to bring change to the situation. While hopelessness might be the common response that a person feels when facing adversity or challenging life events, hopelessness can affect future outcomes as it is a predictor of depressive symptoms, poor health, increased mortality, and is often implicated in suicide attempts and suicide death. At its worst, hopelessness can be detrimental to your future, health, and life. This makes having hope, especially during challenging times, essential.

Why is hope important?

According to American Psychological Association, hope is “the expectation that one will have positive experiences or that a potentially threatening or negative situation will not materialize or will ultimately result in a favorable state of affairs”.

Contrary to how people often think about hope as a passive emotional state, or with the saying “sit back and let’s hope for the best”, researchers argue that hope is an active coping approach.

According to Rick Snyder, one of the leading researchers of Hope Theory, hope is a goal-directed thought and reflects the belief that one can find pathways to their desired goal, and has the agency or motivation based on one’s perceived abilities to reach their goal. Hope is how people think about their goals for the future, identify strategies or pathways to get there, and maintain the motivation to keep working towards that goals even in the face of adversities or obstacles.

Hope pushes people’s thoughts into action. People who have hope are more likely to put their goals into action and make them a reality. Hope not only creates a positive feeling, but also provides people with resilience and acts as a coping strategy against anxiety, depression, and other difficult life events.

Benefits of hope

Research in the past several years has found that hope is associated with many positive benefits including increased life satisfaction, a healthier lifestyle, better physical health, and better social support.

Aside from that, feelings of hope also lowered stress levels, anxiety, and depression, and led to fewer chronic health problems. People with hope tend to make better health choices. Aside from physical and psychological benefits, hope could also contribute to academic success. A study at Leicester University tracked and followed college students for three years and found that more hopeful students went to have greater academic success. Moreover, the study found that hope was a better predictor of academic achievement than personality, intelligence, or previous academic achievement.

Having hope will not only benefit students, but people can also feel its impact outside of the school context. Hope can also make people more productive at work. A study found that hope accounts for 14% of productivity in the workplace — more than optimism, intelligence, or self-efficacy.

How to maintain hope during hard times

Though there are many benefits of hope, it’s not always easy to have hope and maintain it, especially during hard times. When things are beyond your control, being hopeful might be a hard thing to do. So here are a few ways that can help you to maintain hope during hard times:

Acknowledge your feelings

Bad things happen unexpectedly and oftentimes without warning. When it does, it can lead people to feel overwhelmed, and create negative thoughts which can lead to a loss of perspective.

In these moments, stop for a moment, take a deep breath, and acknowledge what you are feeling. Taking the time to pause and reflect can help you reframe your thoughts and figure out the next step forward.

Focus on things that you can control

When going through hardship, people often feel that everything is beyond their control and there is nothing they can do about it. While there are circumstances in life that are out of your control, it is important to recognize the situation or things that are still under your control.

One of the most important aspects of hope is the belief that your action can have an impact on the situation and it is a step towards positive change. Instead of trying to change circumstances beyond your control, try to focus on taking actions that might reduce unpleasant emotions.

For example, when your loved one dies, this is something that is beyond your control. You can focus on things you can control like taking care of yourself, giving support to your loved ones, or remembering the legacy that your loved one left behind. Focusing on things that are within your control can help you find hope to move forward.

Look for your support system

Sometimes when people are going through hard times, their instinct might tell them to withdraw and isolate themselves. While a little time alone might be helpful to understand your feeling and what you are going through, complete isolation from friends and family might lead you to feel more lonely and hopeless.

Seek friends and family support to help you get through a time of hopelessness. If you are going through something in particular, you can try to find a support group or people who are going through the same circumstance as you. Having relationships and support from people who can listen to you and make you feel safe to talk about what you are going through can help you move forward and can make things feel less hopeless.

Remember what you are grateful for

Gratitude is an important component that can help people to find hope. While it might not solve the problem per se, gratitude can help people to appreciate the positive things that are happening in their life right now and look forward to the good things in the future.

In conclusion
