“I try to maintain a healthy dose of daydreaming to remain sane.”

— Florence Welch

Have you ever had your mind wandering? Maybe thinking about moving far away, talking to someone new, or imagining things that should happen? Some people may not like themselves when they zone out because there are a lot of talks about how zoning out is unproductive.

Zoning out has been labeled as the culprit of unawareness of important details about one project, meeting, or interaction. However, before hating oneself for zoning out, how zoning out may bring positive impacts for individuals must be looked at as well.

What is zoning out?

Zoning out is often referred to as mind-wandering or daydreaming. It is the presence of unplanned thoughts that are unrelated to one’s present circumstances. Daydreaming encompasses thoughts that one creates themselves, and these thoughts are not related to the current situation or the task at hand.

Daydreaming or zoning out is an extremely common phenomenon. In fact, every person engages in daydreaming, which accounts for approximately 30-50% of a person’s total waking hours in a day.

As a complex behavior, it has been associated with both adaptive and maladaptive results. This article will go through the misconceptions about zoning out and the facts according to studies.

Myth 1: Zoning out is unproductive

Zoning out is often associated with unproductivity; however, research shows that zoning out may enhance creativity. One study explored how moments of zoning out, where the mind wanders, may link to creativity. The researchers examined 145 participants aged 19-32 and investigated whether engaging in specific tasks during an incubation period influenced creativity problem-solving.

The tasks included demanding and undemanding activities that encouraged the mind to wander. The results showed that engaging in undemanding tasks, allowing the mind to wander, significantly improved performance on creativity problems compared to engaging in demanding tasks or resting — suggesting that letting the mind wander can enhance creative problem-solving.

Myth 2: Zoning out promotes negative mood

Zoning out is often perceived as disengagement from reality, which will always promote a negative mood. it may be true because during zoning out, individuals frequently engage in thoughts about events that are actually not occurring, and this leads to unhappiness. However, when the content of the zoning out was ‘happy’ or ‘calm,’ it led to a positive mood.

Moreover, zoning out also leads to a positive mood when an individual’s thoughts are about the future or oneself rather than the past or others. Therefore, zoning out does not always promote a negative mood. The content of the thought during the period of zoning out is important in determining whether zoning out is a positive or negative experience.

Myth 3: Zoning out leads to loneliness

There is a misconception that zoning out negatively affects interpersonal relationships, which in the end, promotes loneliness. One study involving a large number of participants in the United States found that daydreaming about distant acquaintances, such as past or potential romantic partners, strangers, or fictional characters, relates to more loneliness and less perceived social support. However, daydreaming about close relationships, such as close family and friends, is linked to greater life satisfaction.

Read more: What ‘Life Satisfaction’ Truly Means

It happens because daydreaming about strangers might reflect a person’s dissatisfaction with one’s social network and motivation to change it. The study points out that the nature of daydreams is important to consider when determining how it affects loneliness and life satisfaction.

Myth 4: Zoning out hinders personal development

Even if zoning out may be viewed as a negative behavior, it may also benefit personal development. For instance, one study aimed to understand how the brain processes narratives and, specifically, how it reacts to narratives that appeal to “protected values” tied to personal, national, or religious identities.

The research involved 78 participants from the United States, China, and Iran, who were presented with real-life stories derived from a collection of weblogs. The researchers used fMRI scanning to observe brain activity while participants read these narratives. The findings suggest that engaging with the narratives related to personal values triggered activity in the default mode network, which is the same region in the brain that becomes active during periods of zoning out. It shows that zoning out is related to deep thinking.

Myth 5: Zoning out is a distraction

There is a misconception that zoning out is synonymous with distraction. Although mind-wandering can certainly interrupt progress toward completing a current task and its associated goals, it may be useful in planning ahead and anticipating the future.

One study involving 47 participants aged between 17 and 32 found that a significant portion of mind-wandering involves thoughts about the future, especially when the individual has idle working memory resources. This idle capacity allows for generating future-oriented thoughts during mind-wandering, aiding in autobiographical planning and considering personally relevant future goals.

Read more: Goal-Setting: Why You Should Set Goals

Essentially, mind-wandering can be a cognitive tool for envisioning potential future scenarios and preparing for upcoming events. Therefore, zoning out can lead to better outcomes when the person focuses more on the future rather than on the past or other irrelevant thoughts.

In conclusion

Zoning out is a common activity that may bring both maladaptive and adaptive results. While zoning out may be a distraction to finishing a task and brings a negative mood, it may also bring some positive impacts, such as enhancing creativity, planning for the future, enhancing mood, and deep thinking. However, to get this positive outcome, it is advisable for individuals to focus on the future, close people, and reflect on personal values. By doing this, zoning out can be a natural and beneficial mental process.

How do you feel about your life in general? Looking back, did you get most of the important things you wanted? Are you living your best life? These are some of the questions that concern life satisfaction.

People often think that happiness and life satisfaction are the same thing. When people are happy, it means they are satisfied with their lives. However, even if both may influence each other, happiness and life satisfaction are two different things.

Life satisfaction is obtained from achieving goals, even if these goals lead individuals to experience pain, agony, and material deprivation. In contrast, happiness is an emotional response, a gut reaction without knowing its reason.

Hence, life satisfaction is more stable and long-lived, which is what people seek. In this article, you will learn more about life satisfaction and how to achieve it from a scientific perspective.

What does ‘life satisfaction’ actually mean?

Life satisfaction refers to the inquiry of what leads individuals to evaluate their lives in positive terms, and it strongly depends on individuals’ standards of a good life. It is an individual’s general feeling about life and how pleased they are with their life. It is crucial since it is correlated with health-related aspects such as physical illness, sleep problems, obesity, smoking, and anxiety.

Hence, life satisfaction strongly influences individuals’ health and longevity. Some global surveys have found measuring life satisfaction among countries useful to provide a personal evaluation of an individual’s health, education, income, personal fulfillment, and social conditions. It also gives a big picture of the presence and absence of positive and negative experiences and emotions.

How to get satisfaction in life

Are you wondering how to not just experience temporary happiness but also achieve lasting life satisfaction? Here are some helpful ways that can make a difference for you:

Engage in volunteering

One study involving 186 volunteers aged 65 years and above in Taiwan found that volunteering was associated with a higher life satisfaction. Even for people already volunteering, engaging in formal volunteering five or more days per week may enhance life satisfaction compared to those engaged in less than five days per week.

It happens since volunteering is often followed by eudaimonic motives, which seek growth, meaning, authenticity, and excellence, rather than hedonic motives, which seek pleasure, enjoyment, comfort, and absence of distress. Therefore, engaging in volunteering is recommended for enhancing life satisfaction.

Have good-quality friendships

Besides volunteering, having good-quality friendships may also enhance one’s life satisfaction. Connections with others are important as individuals continue to thrive and grow. Therefore, more support and positivity from friends in life is essential.

Also, this enhancement of life satisfaction happens when individuals have a sense of belonging within one’s social network and are considered someone else’s friend. The rule of thumb is to have three or more friends and enhance your face-to-face interaction with them.

Improve physical health

In a study examining the connection between physical health and life satisfaction, researchers gathered 2,164 participants aged 65 from Brazil. The findings revealed that a higher prevalence of chronic diseases predicted lower life satisfaction, particularly among individuals with severe, progressive, and degenerative physical ailments.

When individuals experience changes in their life due to physical limitations, they compare themselves with their bodies in the past and with their peers; hence, life satisfaction levels tend to decline. Individuals may try to engage in physical activity and have a balanced diet to enhance physical health.

Read more: The Perks of Having a Balanced Diet

Practice gratitude

A higher level of gratitude enhances the level of life satisfaction. Individuals who view a favor as a “gift” are more likely to enjoy the benefit.

Moreover, gratitude may also protect individuals from adaptation to satisfaction, which may prevent them from being happy with things that have been achieved. Then, gratitude prevents individuals from upward social comparisons and enhances the recollection of positive experiences.

Ultimately, this can improve a person’s social benefits and prevention of depressive behavior. To cultivate gratitude, individuals may try a gratitude journal and do gratitude meditation.

Practice good money management

Financial condition is substantially essential for life satisfaction. It is not about achieving financial heaven but about being fulfilled and satisfied with your financial condition. When an individual has better money management, they can participate in activities that enhance their life satisfaction without concerns about financial adversities.

Additionally, better financial planning enhances healthier relationships, which are closely related to life satisfaction. Hence, individuals need to be informed about the practice of financial planning and retirement planning since it would make a big difference in life satisfaction.

In conclusion

Life satisfaction refers to individuals’ overall feelings about their lives and the extent of their contentment with their journey. Consequently, life satisfaction is crucial for enhancing mental and physical health. The good thing is that individuals can increase it by building a positive connection, taking care of themselves, and achieving long-term contentment. So, remember to live and cherish your life the way you want it because each individual has just one life to live!

Despite the prevalence of negative interactions in some work environments, it is crucial to understand the power of compassion as a counterforce that can transform workplace dynamics and improve overall well-being.

This article will delve into the significance of compassion for work colleagues, its benefits, and practical ways to cultivate it.

Workplace compassion: definition and components

Compassion is an emotion against sufferings, either of own or of others. As this emotional reaction emerges due to distress, hence it may exist in settings with interpersonal interactions, such as the workplace.

According to a survey by the American Psychological Association, more than 1 in 5 workers (22%) have experienced harm to their mental health at work, and up to 22% of workers experienced harassment at work in the past 12 months in 2022.

In the end, this took a toll on workers’ mental health. One of the respondents in the survey suggested, “Make the work environment better by limiting toxic people and everyone being treated with kindness and respect.” This perfectly encapsulates workplace compassion, which is the key to a better workplace.

Workplace compassion is the psychological state of an individual in response to pain and suffering. It displays a focus on sufferings and being kind to colleagues’ failure. When there is workplace compassion, it can lead to a positive impact on yourself, your colleagues, or even the company itself.

Compassion for work colleagues comprises three phases:

noticing the pain of others,

emotionally connecting with others’ pain,

and taking steps to minimize the pain.

When a person notices that their colleague is in distress, it brings awareness, which is the initial step of compassion.

Subsequently, compassion continues with emotionally connecting to colleagues who are in distress. This step includes perspective-taking, where one may enquire about the situation and show empathetic concern.

Lastly, a person shows actions in response to others’ pain to lessen, alleviate, or make it more bearable. It may be expressed by emotional support, material goods, or granting flexibility

Differences between empathy, sympathy, and compassion

Sympathy, empathy, and compassion are often used interchangeably. The term sympathy is often expressed by a feeling of pity or sorry for the other person.

However, empathy is a more complex construct that includes individuals’ deep awareness. It is based on two types which are cognitive empathy (understanding a distressing situation) and affective empathy (understanding the feeling of the person).

Lastly, compassion is a way to develop kindness and take the actions needed to promote the well-being of oneself and others.

Hence, empathy involves the ability to truly understand and experience the emotions of others, while sympathy is a one-sided feeling of pity, and compassion involves both feeling sympathy and a desire to reduce the pain of others.

Benefits of compassion in the workplace

Cultivating compassion towards work colleagues might be the key to unlocking a more harmonious and productive workplace.

While business success has traditionally been associated with competitiveness and individual achievement, a growing body of research suggests that incorporating compassion into professional lives may yield remarkable benefits. Here are the following:

Better well-being

A meta-analysis report that involved 58 research studies, including 19,000 people in 15 countries, shows that individuals who feel more connected with their colleagues have better physical health and happiness and are less likely to burn out.

It happens because when individuals treat their colleagues well, it enhances camaraderie. This sense of belonging, in the end, is linked to health and well-being in various ways, such as promoting resilience and better coping mechanisms.

Moreover, it also reduces loneliness and the tendency for depression, which have a crucial impact on individuals’ physical health.

Enhanced creative behavior and psychological safety

Compassion for colleagues may promote workplace friendship. Workplace friendship has been proven to boost a sense of belonging and support. Hence, keeping a high level of psychological safety, which is the risk and cost of unsuccessful innovative behavior, can be reduced, and individuals have a higher tendency to develop creative behavior.

Thus, compassion may enhance friendship at work, motivating them to present innovative ideas and ways of working. Moreover, friendships are also a source of support in the workplace, as friends use each other to solve problems and discuss options.

Improved mental health in colleagues’ children

Other than enhancing your well-being, creative behavior, and psychological safety. Practicing compassion to work colleagues may also enhance the mental health of your colleagues’ children.

One study found that women who experienced rude, disrespectful, and impoliteness in the workplace are more likely to engage in stricter, more authoritarian parenting practices that can have a negative impact on their children. The authoritarian parenting style may result in children’s aggressive behavior, difficulty in social situations, depression, and anxiety.

Practical ways to cultivate compassion at work

Implementing compassion for work colleagues creates a more empathetic and supportive work environment. Some research also shows practical and actionable strategies that can help individuals weave compassion seamlessly into their work lives, fostering a culture of understanding, kindness, and collaboration. Here are some ways how you can cultivate compassion at work:

Being a good listener

Listening is one of the key skills in the workplace. It is important for ensuring communication and developing positive relationships. Also, since noticing the pain of others and emotionally connecting with others’ pain is crucial for workplace compassion, being a good listener is essential.

In order to be a good listener, individuals may try to expand ideas, capabilities, or insights that the speakers stated. Moreover, being a good listener is also expressed by showing genuine interest in what the speaker saying or even simply being present to have tough discussions. If applicable, individuals may also implement the feedback offered by the speaker.

Conducting random acts of kindness

In a meta-analysis of 201 independent studies, researchers found that random acts of kindness, such as leaving positive notes that express gratitude on colleagues’ desks, were more strongly associated with overall well-being than formal prosocial behavior, such as routine volunteering.

It happens since informal helping is more casual and spontaneous and more easily promotes social connections. Furthermore, informal kindness is more varied and less likely to become stale or monotonous.

Giving assistance, if needed

One may think that being proactive in giving help can be useful. However, in a study involving 54 employees between the ages of 21 and 60 in a variety of industries, such as manufacturing, government, health, and education, researchers found that colleagues who are constantly coming up and asking if they need help could promote negative impact on the recipient’s esteem and become frustrating.

Hence, giving help is better to be done when your work colleagues actually requested for it. The helper receives gratitude from the receiver and will be more motivated at work. Whereas, the receiver will actually get the help they need.

In conclusion

Compassion for work colleagues is important since it enhances one’s well-being and innovative behavior. The positive impact of compassion may also extend to the families of colleagues.

Hence, promoting compassion in the workplace is mutually beneficial. By implementing active listening, giving assistance if needed, and conducting acts of kindness, individuals can develop a workplace culture that prioritizes understanding, empathy, and collaboration.

To create a workplace where everyone feels valued, supported, and inspired to bring their best selves, ultimately leading to greater job satisfaction and organizational success.

Planning is a crucial part of life, and it has been an important aspect of achieving life goals. For instance, when someone is planning on renovating their home, they visualize the structure, evaluate the costs, and maybe amend their imagination so that it is aligned with the amount of work that they can manage.

Subsequently, specify the steps that need to be taken to achieve the goal. This situation is also applicable to retirement planning; individuals need to visualize the future lifestyle that is desired, estimate the cost, and align the goals with the work that needs to be done.

There is no fixed answer to when individuals need to plan for retirement. However, just like any other plan in life, planning for your retirement ahead may havesome benefits. In this article, you will explore those benefits and the tips for retirement planning based on age.

Reasons why plan for retirement early

While it may be tempting to delay thinking about retirement, the importance of starting early cannot be emphasized enough. Explore the compelling reasons why individuals need to prioritize saving for retirement from an early stage in their lives, outlining the long-term benefits and potential pitfalls of procrastination.

Compound interest and its impact on retirement savings

Starting retirement planning early provides individuals with a longer time span to save and invest, taking advantage of the power of compounding. Also, compounding allows individuals’ investments to grow over time, and the earlier one starts, the more time the money has to grow and potentially multiply.

This way, individuals will have more time to accumulate the necessary savings to support their desired lifestyle and cover expenses such as living and housing, healthcare, travel, and other needs during retirement.

Cost of delaying retirement planning

When individuals start late in retirement planning, it means they will have fewer years to accumulate the necessary funds, which potentially may lead to a retirement income shortfall. This shortfall may force individuals to compromise on retirement goals and make significant lifestyle adjustments.

In addition, not saving for early retirement may result in insufficient funds to cover medical expenses and health insurance, which makes individuals more vulnerable to financial strain and limited access to quality healthcare.

Retirement planning for specific age groups

Retirement planning needs to consider individual age groups because the needs, goals, and financial circumstances of individuals may vary depending on their stage of life.

By considering some age-specific factors, individuals may build their retirement plans to align with their circumstances, goals, and needs. It allows for more effective and realistic planning, ensuring a secure and fulfilling retirement.

For ages 20 to 30

People in this age group, it is necessary to gain a lot of knowledge about the pension system, investment, and desired future lifestyle and needs. When individuals know about the pension system well, they have more informed decisions to maximize their pension benefits.

Moreover, by understanding the desired future lifestyle, it would be easier to estimate the expenses one may have. Individuals in their 20s may also enhance their skills in managing money as well as surrounding themselves with people who often discuss pension issues and retirement savings. Hence they may start saving and investing early, create a budget as well as control expenses.

For ages 40 to 50

Individuals who are in their 40s and 50s often consider retirement planning a more serious issue compared to the younger age group. In a research about financial planning involving 188 financial planners and educators, the majority of them agreed that families should have achieved 50%–60% of their retirement savings goal by age 50.

To achieve this number, it is advisable for individuals in this age group to consider discussing with a financial advisor to get a clear understanding of the savings gap. If the gap is huge, make a concerted effort to maximize retirement savings. In addition, individuals may also rebalance the investment portfolio to maintain the desired asset allocation regularly.

For ages 60 and beyond

Even if it’s best to start early, retirement planning can be prepared and optimized even if a person is in their 60s, it isn’t too late to start. Individuals need to review and finalize their retirement budget based on their current financial situation, expected income, and expenses in retirement.

Moreover, since it’s important to prioritize health in this age group, individuals need to review healthcare coverage and understand health insurance options. Evaluate long-term care insurance options if necessary to protect against potential healthcare costs.

In conclusion

Planning for retirement early may provide individuals with a longer time span to save and invest, taking advantage of the power of compounding, which allows financial security in the future. Some of the recommendations on early retirement planning include assessing life goals, enhancing financial literacy, as well as managing budgets, savings, and investments.

No matter your age or current financial situation, the time to start planning is now. Retirement planning is an ongoing process. Hence, as you progress along your journey, regularly review and adjust your plan to stay on track and align it with your evolving aspirations.

Do you hesitate when someone asks, “How would you describe yourself?” or “Where are you going with your life?” What’s going on in your head when you hear those questions?

The answers to these life questions are strongly related to self-identity. Due to various choices and pathways in life, individuals might find it difficult to form an identity; therefore, answering these questions might not be easy.

However, committing to an identity is a crucial part of life since it helps individuals to make choices in life, creating a sense of belonging and even developing firm boundaries. If you’re still in the process of finding your self-identity, don’t worry. In this article, you will learn more about self-identity and how to navigate an identity crisis.

What is self-identity?

Self-identity can be defined as a stable and important aspect of one’s perception of themselves. It is developed in childhood when individuals start to show evidence of self-recognition — being aware that your name refers to the body and mirror image of your body. In addition, it is also displayed when a person first uses the term “I” or “me” as well as “you” which implies an awareness of self from a different point of view.

In adult individuals, self-identity covers more than the recognition of one’s own physical body but also attitudes and values towards oneself, such as, “I think of myself as a green consumer” or “I think of myself as a health-conscious consumer.”

Over a lifespan, an individual’s self-identity is constantly shaped and reshaped according to circumstances and critical life experiences such as marriage, parenthood, illness, and aging.

However, it is usually a central concern during adolescence, when decisions about future vocational, ideological, and relational adversities have to be faced.

Stages of identity development

James Marcia is a Canadian clinical and developmental psychologist known for his work in the theory of Identity Status. The theory of identity status proposed that two parts contribute to the achievement of self-identity: crisis and commitment. These two produce four different processes which late adolescents or young adults go about in the way of shaping their identity.

Identity diffusion

This process is characterized when a person has no opinions and has made no effort to learn about or experience various options. It also occurs when a person hasn’t chosen an identity and isn’t working to develop one.

Identity diffusion is the least complex and mature of the other identity statuses. One example of identity diffusion is when a person decides not to commit to a particular career choice since they don’t know what they want to be.

Identity foreclosure

This process is when an individual decides on an identity without looking into alternatives. Often, these beliefs about oneself are based on parental ideas that are accepted without question.

Identity foreclosure is different from identity diffusion, where in the former, a person has chosen an identity. For instance, a woman who grew up in a family of doctors commits to being a doctor without hesitation and never looks for another career option.

Identity moratorium

This is a stage when an individual is trying out roles or activities to find the most suitable identity for them. It is when the individual strives to understand their capabilities, society’s wishes, and demands.

An example of an identity moratorium is when college students shift their college major after realizing what they are learning is not what they want to do in the future. Or when individuals explore various career options via volunteering, internship, and online search before identifying the most suitable.

Read more: Raising Teen Volunteers: Organizations You Can Look Into

Identity achievement

This state happens when the commitment is high and the person has gone through a period of exploring many options. Individuals may reach this stage when choosing occupations, values, or lifestyles.

Being in this stage gives a person a sense of uniqueness, awareness of their weaknesses and strengths, and take a stand on sociopolitical issues. An example of identity achievement is when individuals are able to figure out what their own values are and be confident about them.

How to be authentic to yourself

While it is normal to question who you are, especially in times when we need to make serious decisions about our life. It is important to understand who you really are and get used to changes so that you may grow as a person. Here are some of the things you may do to be authentic to yourself:

Exploring available options

Learning from the theory of identity status, being authentic requires individuals to explore the available options for identity issues. You may start by identifying your identity dilemmas, such as confusion about which lifestyle to adopt, which job to accept, or which life values to implement.

These explorations may come in daily interactions with people around you. Whenever you receive discrepant feedback from people around that contradicted your current self-views, take that as a cue for exploration. In addition, you may also start to engage in several activities with the guidance of experts that are able to provide a safe space and support.

Documenting each option

After engaging in some activities, you may write down your feelings and thoughts about each activity. Critically evaluate each of them, and choose an alternative supported by the strongest reasoning. To understand yourself, you also may identify your unique traits and set short- and long-term goals. Then find which activities align with your personal goals. This way, you will be more organized in achieving your goals while getting to do what you desire to do.

Read more: Three Ways to Keep Motivated in Achieving Goals

Understanding the psychological and social context

While forming an individual’s identity, it is important to understand the psychological and social context as well. Psychological context refers to how individuals connect to the past, and present experiences as well as envisioned future. Whereas social context refers to how an individual relates to others and the context of their lives.

By understanding psychological and social context, a person will not be stuck in a closed view of themselves. To understand the psychological and social context, individuals should be mindful of their choices, explore their history, or seek guidance from mental health professionals.

In conclusion

Since self-identity is crucial for navigating your life and relationships with others, ensuring the maturity of your self-identity is essential. Welcoming an identity crisis is one of the steps that need to be taken to arrive at the identity achievement stage. Some tips you may use include exploring various options, taking note of your strengths and weaknesses, and understanding your past experiences and how they shape your current self.

Have you ever met a person who looks like they’re in their 70s or 80s, but is still so bright and physically active? Maybe they are still able to do some sports like skiing and dancing, or even complex activities like chess, crosswords, and assembling furniture — even doing it better than the younger individuals. These individuals are called SuperAgers.

SuperAgers can be defined as older adults who demonstrate superior memory performance and better physical ability than their counterparts. Even though a decline in memory function commonly happens with the elderly, some of them manage to avoid this issue. Since aging well has been an interest for so many people, this article will explore the longevity secrets of some of the world’s well-known SuperAgers.

Science reveals the secrets

While becoming a SuperAger may seem out of reach for most people, scientists have found some factors that are associated with superior physical and cognitive performance in an aging population.

One of them is the genetic factor; just like one person might be born taller than the other, one individual may also have a higher intelligence or physical capability than the other.

However, even if genetics may play a part in developing SuperAgers, some lifestyle factors may also influence cognitive and physical capabilities. The secret to longevity can be found around the world and anyone could do with learning these practices from these SuperAgers.

The Hunza’s secret to long life

The Hunza tribe lives in the Hunza Valley in Northern Pakistan. They are often regarded as one of the longest-living individuals in the world. The Hunza elderly population is fit, full of buoyancy, and nearly free from illness.

One study found that the Hunza live in peace and are not emotionally stressed.

In addition, another research also found that the Hunza are living a healthy way of life with a diet that majorly consists of fruits such as peaches, plums, grapes, cherries, and apricots as well as various grains such as wheat, barley, and millet.

The root of Chinese Qigong

Qigong is a mind and body exercise, and a healing practice, developed in ancient China and Tibet. It works by using meditation, breathing, and various physical movements to increase energy and enable the body to heal.

Qigong has been practiced around the world and has been proven to enhance brain processing speed and sustained attention which is extremely beneficial since both decline as humans age.

However, not only does it bring advantages for the brain, but Qigong is also beneficial for physical health especially for enhancing balance and gait in people in their 60s and 70s. Therefore, practicing Qigong is also useful in reducing the tendency for falling.

Secrets of Japanese longevity

Japan has been crowned as the world’s most long-lived country among G7 countries. This title reflects the balanced diet and lifestyle of the Japanese. Research shows that the traditional diet in Okinawa, one of the prefectures in Japan, consists of root vegetables such as sweet potatoes, green and yellow vegetables, soybean-based meals, and medicinal herbs. Okinawa’s secret to long life also includes moderately consumed seafood, lean meats, fruits, and alcohol. This diet pattern results in lower caloric intake and a high concentration of antioxidants.

In addition, one study also found that since the 1970s, there has been a reduction in coronary heart disease and stroke in Japan — results of decreased blood pressure levels and smoking practices among its residents.

Insights from the Australian SuperAgers

One study conducted in Australia aims to explore the Australian SuperAgers with superior memory and its associated factors. The researchers found that years of education, participation in investigative activities such as solving math, chess puzzles, or even troubleshooting software packages on a PC, social connection, and reduced depressive symptoms are factors associated with longevity. SuperAgers in Australia are involved in more positive social relations with others compared to the elderly of similar ages.

In addition, they also have lower depressive symptoms, which acted as a strong predictor of memory resilience. Years of education also may have played a part in maintaining memory.

In conclusion

Even though a decline in memory function and physical capabilities commonly happens in older age, there are various habits you can adopt to enhance your chances of becoming a SuperAger. Some of them include being socially active, not being emotionally stressed, consuming fruits and grains, doing mind-body exercises, avoiding smoking, and participating in investigative activities. These activities have the potential to increase your memory and physical strength even as you age.

You might have heard of some physical health misconceptions at least once. For instance, you may be familiar with the five-second rule, an X-ray causing cancer, or tilting the head back during a nosebleed.

Many people believe these myths because they are conveyed through word of mouth, in the form of news, advice from friends, or maybe through a friend’s friend.

The bad news is, myths around physical health combined with the absence of medical facts may lead to misguidance. It may worsen an existing physical condition as well as prevent individuals from seeking professional help.

To avoid getting lost in myths, here are the facts to set them straight.

Myth: It is necessary to drink eight glasses of water each day.

Dehydration is a problem that many people fear, especially young children and older adults. Therefore, to avoid the consequences of dehydration, some people live by the rule of eight glasses, or two liters, of water each day.

However, one study found that two liters daily is more than people need. Given that around half of the daily water intake comes from food, individuals often only really need about 1.5 to 1.8 liters per day.

Myth: Egg yolks should be avoided at all costs.

The egg yolk contains a high level of cholesterol which can cause the appearance of plaque on the walls of the arteries. If this continues to happen, it can develop into heart attacks.

However, it does not mean that it should be avoided at all costs. Since most of the nutrients in an egg are in the yolk, it can be beneficial for health too.

One study found that mice were less likely to become infected with bacteria that commonly cause intestinal infection after digesting immunoglobulin in egg yolk. Another study also found that people who ate whole eggs immediately after performing resistance training had higher rates of muscle metabolism than those who consumed egg whites only.

Having a balanced diet is the key to good health. Consuming eggs in moderation will help you get the full benefits of eggs while avoiding the harmful consequences of it.

Myth: Deodorants are the main cause of breast cancer.

Some people believe that deodorants contain toxic chemical ingredients that may induce serious health problems such as breast cancer through skin absorption.

However, one systematic review in 2016 found that there is insufficient research to obtain reliable results about the possible association between deodorants or antiperspirant usage and the risk of developing breast cancer. Another study also concluded that no clear evidence expressed the use of antiperspirants that contain aluminum increased the risk of breast cancer.

If you are concerned about your breast cancer risk, consider taking care of your diet, exercising, and doing the regular screening.

Myth: Dirty toilet seats transmit Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

Toilet seats often get a reputation as the dirtiest place in the household. Some people believe that bacteria and viruses can be contracted from a toilet seat, especially if they are dirty.

However, one study found that the Genital Human Papillomavirus, which is one of the most common viruses that causes sexually transmitted diseases, is unlikely to be found on toilet floors or seat surfaces.

To effectively reduce the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases, don’t share injection equipment or use barrier methods when engaging in sexual activity.

Myth: Organic foods are always better.

There are some myths about healthy eating. One of them is that organic foods are always better. Though more expensive, some people believe the health benefits derived from organic foods are worth the price. There is a belief that foods that grow organically have more nutrients, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and micronutrients which are beneficial for health.

However, until now there is not enough scientific evidence that supports this belief. According to one research, there is some evidence of the potential benefits of consuming organic foods, however, there is also ambiguity as to what extent it affects physical health.

To get the full benefits of food, prepare the food well so you can avoid foodborne illnesses.

In conclusion

Knowledge is power, therefore, by equipping ourselves with the right knowledge, we can live better. By being aware of the myths that occur in society regarding physical health, we can protect ourselves from health practices that may do us more harm than good. You may also consult a health professional to get more detailed advice on what you need to do to maintain better health.

Have you ever heard that to be healthy, we need to stop eating certain foods? Or maybe allot time reading nutrition labels and start avoiding delicious meals? We live in a world surrounded by food restrictions, and it often makes us feel anxious while being happy to consume our favorite meals. These restrictions often produce the million-dollar question of what is the best diet for someone’s health and mood. A balanced diet might be the answer to this constant dilemma.

There is no single food item that can provide all of the nutrients our body requires. Thus, consuming different foods that include a variety of vitamins and minerals is important to ensure that our body receives what it necessitates, which becomes the key to a balanced diet.

A balanced diet includes a variety of foods in sufficient quantities and proportions to meet calorie, energy, and other requirements, with a modest allowance for extra nutrients to help the body cope with short-term diseases. Rather than focusing on tight limitations and rules, the key to a balanced diet is to consume each food item in moderation. And doing so comes with numerous advantages as follows:

Pleasure for your taste buds

If you believe that anything delicious should be avoided to be healthy, you can put that belief aside. Instead of restricting yourself from certain foods, a balanced diet encourages you to eat various foods in the right amounts. The food needs to contain protein, carbohydrates, fats, minerals, and vitamins that can be found in meat, fish, chicken, nuts, and fruits.

In addition, you can also have a balanced diet in various cuisines and cooking methods, such as the Korean-Style Balanced Diet or the Japanese Traditional Diet. Therefore, by enjoying numerous cuisines, healthy food does not mean being boring and bland.

Improves physical health

A balanced diet is related to a stronger immune system which is really helpful, especially during the pandemic.

It also has the advantages of healing and maintaining the build-up of muscle mass. For these essential processes to take place, the body needs a balanced diet that contains particular vitamins and minerals. For instance, you may drink a glass of fresh orange juice to fulfill the vitamin C your body needs. Therefore, you may enjoy this delightful yet healthful summer drink while taking care of your physical health.

Boosts productivity

In 2015, the Global Nutrition Report revealed that 2 billion people worldwide had prevailing micronutrient deficiency cases, which translated to an estimated productivity loss value of $3.5 trillion per year.

Macronutrient deficiencies can lead to negative implications for workplace productivity. Maintaining a balanced diet not only takes care of your physical body but also helps you gain the energy to be more productive and achieve your career goals.

Maintain good mental health

Aside from providing the necessary nutrients to your body and avoiding physical illnesses, sustaining a balanced diet can also lessen the possibility of mental illnesses.

Research led by Joaquim Radua in 2022 found that implementing a balanced diet can prevent depression and anxiety. The study mentioned that the most basic principle in countering depression and mood swings is to eat a balanced diet that contains foods from all the different food groups, such as vitamins, proteins, and carbohydrates.

A balanced and high-quality diet, such as the Mediterranean diet, provides all the nutrients needed for our mental and physical health.

Progress in brain health

Other than improving our physical health, a balanced diet may also improve brain health. There is a strong relationship between physical health and brain health that should not be overlooked.

The human brain shapes people’s identity as a human and how they function in daily life, such as when they adapt to the new workplace environment and communicate with people around them. By improving your brain health, you will have a better ability to think, learn, solve problems, and enjoy an emotional balance. Enhancing brain health can also improve memory and enhance mental health.

According to a study, having a low-quality unbalanced diet can reduce brain volume and connectivity, which might negatively affect memory, learning, and decision-making. Therefore, having a balanced diet is highly beneficial for a healthier brain.

In conclusion

Experimental research shows that eating various foods positively affects someone’s energy intake. Therefore it is all about finding the right balance when it comes to eating well. Even if your favorite foods are rich in calories, fat, or sweets, you can still enjoy them. The idea is to eat them in moderation, and this is the answer to your constant dilemma of which food you should eat to be healthy and which food brings you joy. You may enjoy the food that brings pleasure to your taste buds while having less burden of the consequences of it.

If you somehow committed to physical exercise before, you might experience these benefits. But can physical activities help you when brain fog comes? Could it help to strengthen your brain in general?

The brain is your most complicated organ, and your mind has the most complex function. Moreover, the brain is a biological organ like the heart and lungs. Hence, like most organs, your brain is not immune to illness.

One of the illnesses that are widely known is Alzheimer’s Disease, and the number of people living with it is growing fast. More than five million Americans of all ages have Alzheimer’s, and an estimated 5.8 million people aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s and dementia in 2020.

Another common brain illness is migraine. It affects an estimated 12% of the US population, whereas chronic migraine affects 1% to 2% of the global population. The prevalence of migraine is enormous as it affects one in five women over three months.

Brain problems could be scary since it affects people’s way of thinking and how they make decisions in life and build relationships. Since we are familiar with the various benefits of physical activity, the question is — can physical activity help with brain problems? Well, the answer is yes!

There are a lot of physical exercises that may help people to strengthen their brain, such as swimming, running, or even dancing. However, if you never try these exercise routines before, you might find them overwhelming and confusing since you are clueless about where to start. Therefore, here are some guides to help you with these concerns.

Access your physical capacity

If you have done physical exercise before, you probably have some idea of how you usually do your physical activity. Try assessing and recording your physical activity since it may help to change exercise habits as well as enhance your confidence in overcoming exercise barriers.

But if you never exercise and you have an injury or a medical condition, you need to start exercising carefully. You also may consult with professionals for assistance in creating a fitness regimen. It is particularly essential if you have an unstable health condition, such as risk factors for heart disease, respiratory adversities, or osteoporosis since it might prevent you from possible injuries.

Identify which exercise works for you

One of the most important things to remember is to choose a physical exercise that you find enjoyable. People are more likely to abandon a routine if the chosen activity does not suit their liking. Some of the questions you might ask yourself include do you like to exercise? Do you enjoy competitive sports or individual activities? Do you have any time and resources to do those activities? Is there any way you could fit the activity into your schedule? Considering the advantages and disadvantages of the activities will also help you decide which may be best for you.

Start low-impact exercises

After you try various physical exercises, find which one you enjoy the most. It is better to consider your experiences in physical exercise. If you are a beginner, the physical challenge of some activities may be too much at first. Do not beat yourself up, pick a considerate option and gradually work your way up.

You may start with low-impact exercises like bike or water exercises to decrease the risk of overusing a particular body part and getting injured. If you have done physical exercise before, trying various physical exercises helps prevent exercise boredom.

Be consistent

If you are having trouble maintaining an exercise routine, you are not alone. Many people have problems getting out of procrastination. While practical concerns like a super busy schedule can make exercise more challenging, the biggest adversities come from your mind.

One of the most important steps is to be aware of your intention to miss the physical exercise session. Then you may create a physical exercise plan. Keep in mind that a little exercise is better than nothing. Therefore, do not beat yourself up. Adding just fair amounts of physical exercise to your routine can have a far-reaching impact on your brain.

What exercises can you do at home?

Leaving the house and finding workout buddies is too troublesome for some people. Whether the gym is not your forte or you are busy with work, you can still do physical exercises in your room that can strengthen your mind.

Yoga

Yoga is a helpful mind and physical exercise. It combines physical postures, rhythmic breathing, and meditative exercise. Since yoga has a positive effect on the function of the hippocampus, amygdala, prefrontal cortex, cingulate cortex, and brain networks, it may hold promise to mitigate age-related and neurodegenerative declines. One of the good things about yoga is that it has a lot of types that you can choose from based on your preference and needs.

Pilates

You can also do some Pilates movements at home. Pilates increases cognitive function since it is different from many other forms of exercise. It requires the brain to pay attention to what you are doing. It is also because Pilates improves balance, control, and muscle strength. The frontal and temporal regions are affected positively with Pilates, which results in cognition enhancement, such as attention and planning.

In conclusion

Due to the mind and body connection, the time spent at the gym, running or walking along the street, or maybe aggressive physical games with friends can do more than build muscle and improve body mobility. Physical activity also works well in strengthening prefrontal and hippocampal brain areas, which are responsible for cognitive processes and memory. Physical exercises are also associated with cognitive improvement and stress resilience. Therefore, physical activities not only recover or minimize cognitive deficits but also counteract brain pathology.

Emotions seem to make life messy, but they are inherent in you and if you pay close attention to your feelings, you might find important messages about yourself. It can also help with maintaining your mental health since, by understanding which emotion is impaired, you can integrate this knowledge into psychotherapy approaches with the hopes of increasing their efficacy and effectiveness. Hence, what message is your emotion trying to tell you?

Anger

Since people often relate anger to destruction and impulsiveness, it is most often suppressed. However, anger reveals your sense of fairness. When you feel anger, you may perceive a circumstance as being unfair to you or the people and things that you care about, which means anger motivates you to create fairness. But remember, being violent in expressing anger is not acceptable. To bring a positive message, you need to deal with anger constructively.

Sadness

Have you ever been in a situation where you need to say goodbye to the people that you love or where you realize that you need to let go of a desire? In such situations, you might feel your heart drop and tears fall. Those are some of the most common bodily sensations when sadness appears. Sadness is usually associated with grief and it brings the worst bodily sensations. However, just like any other emotion, it is normal to experience sadness. This emotion tells you that you lost something important to you. Hence, sadness could be an important fuel for you to get back to who or what was lost or replace the loss of an important person or thing.

Loneliness

Loneliness is a pandemic for adults in modern society. For instance, in the Netherlands, the prevalence of loneliness among young adults is 39.7%, whereas in early and late middle-aged adults, it was 43.3% and 48.2%.

Loneliness tells you that you need to be with someone that you cared for, or maybe with someone who cares about you. It reminds you that you are a social creature and you need to get out of isolation. By doing so, you can get satisfaction from experiencing being loved or being part of a group.

Insecurity

The feeling of insecurity might emerge around work or school. For instance, you may feel that you didn’t perform at the level needed. Or when your supervisor believes that you need to improve in a certain area. Insecurities tell you to reflect on whether you are inadequate, or you simply need to change your perspective. This way, insecurities might become a motivation for you to acquire new skills or a chance to practice self-compassion.

Stress

Stress is inevitable. Every person on the planet experiences stresses at some point in their life. Rather than eliminating it all over, it is better to learn how to manage it. Stress may come as another form of fear which warns you that something bad might happen if you don’t do things well enough. This means you have to do what needs to be done, to reduce or eliminate the chance of being hurt. Stress may also be a sign that you have too many commitments. In this case, you need to learn to set boundaries and say no.

In conclusion

Everyone is born with emotions. To put them to good use, you have to take the time to be aware of them, as well as the message associated with each of them. This way, you will be able to know what you need, want, and desire. Then, choose a reassuring response and take appropriate actions to create a satisfying life. Regardless of where you are on the path to a more fulfilling life, you have emotions as a powerful tool to help you along the way.
