Across the world, countless individuals provide care or assistance to loved ones living with long-term illnesses or disabilities.

However, providing this type of care can also be physically, emotionally, and financially exhausting. Family caregivers often go above and beyond their usual responsibilities, dedicating much of their time, energy, and resources to caring for their loved ones. And this can take a significant toll on their own health and well-being.

This article will focus on family caregivers’ challenges and why they need support. This article will also explore some of the ways caregivers can get help so they can continue to provide care to their loved ones while also taking care of their own well-being.

Understanding ‘Caregiver Stress’

While caring for a loved one may be rewarding, it can also be extremely taxing physically and emotionally (Kumar et al., 2019). Caregiver stress refers to the burden experienced by individuals caring for a family member or loved one with a chronic illness or disability. This type of stress can negatively affect caregivers’ mental and physical health, causing symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and physical health complaints (Lovell et al., 2012).

Recognizing that caregiver stress is a real issue that can have long-lasting effects is essential. Taking care of oneself is vital for caregivers to continue providing support to their loved ones. By acknowledging caregiving challenges and seeking support, caregivers can take steps to manage stress and improve their overall well-being.

Based on previous studies (Kramer & Thompson, 2001; Lai, 2012; Sullivan & Miller, 2015), providing care for a family member with an illness or disability can come with various challenges, which include the following:

Physiological problems

These can manifest as respiratory issues, difficulty sleeping, and a higher tendency to use over-the-counter medicines, have been observed among male caregivers. Husbands who become caregivers may also experience increased depression and decreased happiness, despite the common belief that male caregiving is a more positive experience.

Poor mental health

Male caregivers are also at a higher risk of developing stress-related illnesses. Significant stress is often experienced while caring for someone with an illness, which can take a toll on the caregiver’s mental health.

Financial costs

The costs associated with family caregiving can cause a significant burden for both male and female caregivers. These costs should not be understood solely in financial terms, as they can impact the overall well-being of caregivers.

Neglected relationships

The focus shifts away from the relationship and towards the tasks of caregiving, which can leave caregivers feeling neglected and isolated. As caregivers manage the decreasing resources of time, energy, and finances often associated with chronic illness, their social relations with other family members and friends may also be neglected. This sense of an unbalanced relationship can be particularly profound when the care partner experiences significant cognitive impairment.

Thus, caregiver stress is not something burdening for a short period of time. Instead, it impacts the caregiver negatively, and the family as a support system must find ways to support the caregivers in their family.

Ways to support caregivers

Family members may offer emotional support, providing them with additional helping hands and staying connected with them. Here are three ways to show caregiver support:

Give emotional support

Being a caregiver is tough and can make one feel really down and anxious. However, family members can be a great help by providing emotional support. This means creating a safe and understanding environment for caregivers to share their feelings without fear of judgment.

Family members can offer emotional support in many ways, such as by listening actively and reassuring the caregiver that their emotions are valid. Caregivers also need to feel heard and understood, and family members can offer encouragement and support. Emotional support can also be in the form of professional counseling or therapy or providing access to helpful resources to reduce the caregiver’s stress levels.

Be an additional helping hand

Caring for someone can be challenging, especially if one has no experience doing it. Caregivers often have to learn on the fly, which can make things even more stressful. To make things worse, they often have to juggle other responsibilities like work, taking care of kids, and household chores, on top of being the sole caregiver.

To help ease the burden for caregivers, it is important to brainstorm ways to provide them with some relief regarding household tasks. This might include hiring someone to help out or getting other family members and friends to pitch in. Another way to help is to connect caregivers with useful skills and information through national societies or associations so they do not have to learn everything independently.

Stay connected with caregivers

Staying connected with family caregivers is crucial for ensuring they feel supported and not alone in their caregiving journey. Caregivers benefit greatly from connecting with others who are in similar situations, as it helps them feel understood and provides an opportunity to learn from one another.

Thus, ensuring the caregivers maintain other essential relationships, such as with children, family members, and close friends, is also important. These relationships can offer emotional support and provide a much-needed break from caregiving demands. They must prioritize and make time for these relationships, even when caregiving duties seem overwhelming.

In conclusion

Caregiving is challenging and can be emotionally draining for caregivers. They need help and resources to lighten their load. And the role of family members is crucial in providing this much-needed support. When everyone prioritizes the needs of caregivers, it creates a family system that is caring and supportive for all.

Additionally, providing caregivers with the necessary resources can make all the difference in their caregiving journey because they work diligently to help our family members live more comfortably. Caregivers deserve to be appreciated and supported.

People may be observing physical objects around them or contemplating nonphysical ideas and even their interactions with others. How they evaluate their surroundings may encompass their thoughts and emotions that would later form their overall positive or negative judgment, known as attitude.

Imagine a person who wakes up feeling unmotivated and pessimistic about their workday ahead. This negative sentiment about their work — or attitude — may lead to decreased productivity throughout the day caused by procrastination and lack of focus.

On the other hand, someone who wakes up with a positive feeling and is motivated is more likely to be enthusiastic about their work, which may result in increased productivity because they are focused throughout the day.

The examples showed that, in the simplest definition, attitude is how you think and feel about something or someone that can significantly impact your behavior towards those objects. Considering how attitude plays a role in influencing behavior, understanding attitude then becomes essential.

Thus, this article will provide you with the connection between attitude and productivity, the benefits of a positive attitude, and how to cultivate a productive attitude at work.

How attitude shapes behavior and productivity

In general, even though it is clear that attitude plays a role in shaping behavior, the connection between attitude and productivity is sometimes overlooked. So, how does attitude impact productivity?

The answer is simple; when an attitude holds personal significance and aligns with an individual’s values and interests (Sönmez et al., 2010), such as a positive attitude towards work or a desired group, it becomes highly influential in driving their behavior. For example, if you like completing creative work, you will likely engage in such projects more in your company.

Similarly, someone with a positive attitude towards their team or colleagues may be more inclined to collaborate and work towards shared objectives. These daily scenarios show how attitude can influence someone’s behavior. In productivity, shifting attitudes by aligning values and interests toward the objects will more likely result in enhanced productivity.

Benefits of a positive attitude in the workplace

A positive attitude impacts behavior positively, but what are the other benefits? In the workplace setting, a positive attitude includes how it can be beneficial for you to tackle your duties and responsibilities.

According to Zammitti et al. (2022), here are some advantages of having a positive attitude at work that can boost productivity:

Enhances work engagement

According to the study, a positive attitude is linked to work engagement. As a result, a positive attitude may make individuals feel dedicated to their work.

Moreover, being engaged means individuals can focus effectively on their work. Thus, in the workplace setting, when you feel engaged with what you are doing, you are more likely to be dedicated and concentrate better on your tasks.

Improves motivation

The same study also found that attitude influences one’s intention in the workplace, resulting in beneficial work-related behaviors. Work engagement acts as a motivational energy. When you feel engaged with your work, you will be more motivated to do your responsibilities.

Enhances job satisfaction

The study also explored how attitude impacts job and life satisfaction in general. In a broad context, when people are positively engaged with their work and see that their job is a part of their life that brings them satisfaction, a positive attitude may also be linked to life satisfaction.

When you see your work as something that brings you advantages, you are more likely to feel satisfied.

Practical tips for cultivating a productive attitude

Cultivating a productive attitude is not merely being relentlessly optimistic but also taking proactive actions to achieve your goals. Here are some helpful tips for developing and maintaining a productive attitude:

Embrace a growth mindset

According to Wolcott et al. (2021), it is important to adopt a growth mindset, as Carol Dweck’s theory explains. This theory emphasizes how your beliefs about intelligence and your capacity to change can impact your approach to obstacles.

By fully embracing a growth mindset, you can cultivate the belief that your abilities can improve through dedication and education.

Prioritize and manage your time effectively

Prioritizing your most crucial tasks and allocating dedicated time and effort to tackle them is vital for better outcomes (Strickland & Galimba, 2001).

Practice self-discipline and focus

To improve your focus, practicing self-discipline and eliminating distractions is important (Nowlin et al., 2022; Shi & Qu, 2022). You can set up your workspace to be free from distractions and help you concentrate better on your tasks.

Practice positive self-talk

Developing positive self-talk is essential because it can boost your performance, enhance your problem-solving skills, and increase your resilience (Basset et al., 2022; Hamilton et al., 2011; Tod et al., 2011).

You may consider being mindful of your inner dialogue and replacing negative thoughts with positive and encouraging ones.

Seek feedback and learn from failures

It is important to actively seek feedback and view it as a chance to develop and enhance your skills (Henry et al., 2018).

In conclusion

A productive attitude is more than just an idea; it is a powerful force that can give you the strength and motivation to face challenges with purpose and confidence. No doubt about it, a simple shift in attitude can create a profound impact on your productivity. So, embrace that positivity since it may help you open yourself up to incredible opportunities and possibilities.

In today’s modern world, you may often struggle with the constant temptation to prioritize entertainment over productivity. With so many distractions at your fingertips, you will get lost in social media, streaming services, and mobile games. These endless distractions make it easy for you to lose track of time and neglect your important tasks.

On the other hand, constantly forcing yourself to work without taking breaks or engaging in enjoyable activities can be detrimental to your health. This makes finding the right balance between enjoying entertainment and being productive an important task you have to accomplish. So, how do you create this balance?

One strategy for balancing productivity and enjoyment is choosing the content that brings you pleasure or relaxation and adds something meaningful to your life. Now, think about reading a book that provides valuable takeaways and helps you grow after reading it. It could also be as simple as picking a movie or show that makes you feel good that leaves you with a warm feeling and a positive message to carry into your day.

That is conscious entertainment; choosing entertainment that leaves a message or positive impact on you. Conscious entertainment goes beyond mindless consumption of entertainment.

In this article, you will find how to balance productivity and enjoyment in daily life with conscious entertainment.

Importance of conscious entertainment

Conscious entertainment is an excellent way to find a perfect balance between entertainment and productivity. Integrating the two may be beneficial rather than choosing one over another.

Consequently, to truly understand why it matters and why you should try incorporating this lifestyle, this article presents why conscious entertainment is essential and its benefits.

Prevents binge watching

This activity may be familiar to you. In fact, it has become a typical pattern in consuming entertainment. Although this activity may bring pleasure, it could affect your goals negatively and result in guilt because you realize you are wasting time.

Prevents procrastination

You may engage with entertainment as a form of procrastination. The more you consume entertainment to procrastinate, the less you will enjoy the potential benefits of entertainment. In fact, you will be more likely to gain negative feelings because of procrastination.

All in all, being mindful of entertainment consumption may help you deal with harmful entertainment activities, such as binge-watching and seeking entertainment as a form of procrastination. Moreover, conscious entertainment can help you gain benefits instead of negatively impacting your life.

Benefits of conscious entertainment

After knowing why conscious entertainment is essential, let’s dive into the benefits of balancing productivity and entertainment:
Provides pleasure

Many people seek entertainment because it gives pleasure. In fact, a principal goal of entertainment is to provide enjoyment. When you engage in conscious entertainment, pleasure will most likely be provided since you know you are seeking pleasure in relaxation, not running away from your responsibilities.

Encourages personal growth

Many times, when people consume movies, they accept the insights from the movies easily because movies deliver beneficial information positively and reassuringly. Consequently, you would likely accept the information as part of your self-image and utilize it to improve yourself and your personal growth.

Improves focus and attention

This benefit explicitly refers to audio entertainment: music. Some people found that listening to background music may enhance their focus and attention in a task that does not require high concentration.

In other words, this type of entertainment provides pleasure without high personal demands and allows people to be still productive while consuming the entertainment.

Enhances productivity

Mindless entertainment may harm productivity, but conscious entertainment may improve it. In a workplace setting, incorporating an entertainment system enhances employee enjoyment and motivation, which may increase productivity.

Moreover, entertainment improves productivity by decreasing job stress. For workers, a fun working environment is a significant factor in their performance.

Strategies for balancing productivity and entertainment

Being productive while enjoying entertainment at the same may sound impossible, but there are some strategies to maintain a healthy balance between productivity and entertainment that you can follow. Here are the 10 tips to help you be productive while still enjoying leisure activities and entertainment:

Make mundane tasks enjoyable

You can listen to podcasts or audiobooks while completing everyday tasks to make them enjoyable and less tedious.

Take breaks to engage in entertainment

You can take breaks to engage in pleasurable activities, such as reading a book or even as simple as going for a walk, to boost your mood and motivation. This may help you focus when you return to work.

Use a timer

You can use a timer or applications to schedule your time efficiently. This includes planning time to switch between work and entertainment to maintain your focus and prevent burnout while working.

Find a work-friendly playlist

You can find a playlist that you enjoy to stay motivated or to cancel the distracting noise around you. You can also utilize the playlist as your background music.

Make use of commuting

If you have to commute, you can use this time to catch up on your favorite movies, TV shows, or podcasts. This can make your commute feel more enjoyable and productive.

Exercise while listening to music or podcast

Exercising while engaging in audio entertainment may help you stay active while providing entertainment.

Join a hobby club

You can engage with a club that aligns with your interests to break up the workday. This also provides social interaction for you.

Detach from technology

Instead of focusing solely on entertainment from screens, you can allocate your time to participate in offline activities that bring you joy, such as spending quality time with your family or friends.

Practice self-care

Getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, and exercising may help you engage in work and your personal life better. In turn, you are able to juggle between working and leisure activities.

Set clear boundaries between work and leisure time

Lastly, setting clear boundaries is vital to prevent burnout and maintain a healthy balance. Make sure you are not overworking yourself and make time to prioritize relaxation to perform at your best when working.

In conclusion

Balancing work and enjoyment can be a daily challenge for many people. It is easy to become consumed with work, leaving little time for leisure. However, finding a happy balance between the two is important for a fulfilling life.

If you struggle to find time for relaxation in your busy life, remember that being productive and enjoying entertainment at the same time is possible. You just have to find what works for you to overcome this struggle and achieve a productive and happy life.

Motivation is more than just a buzzword; it is the invisible force that fuels your actions and shapes your outcomes. For example, imagine a student who is motivated to succeed academically. This motivation drives them to set specific goals, create a study schedule, and consistently put in the effort required to excel in their classes.

In your case, the world may be filled with endless to-do lists, deadlines, and goals, making the desire to achieve more and maximize productivity your pursuit. However, have you ever wondered what truly drives peak performance? The answer lies in understanding the fascinating connection between motivation and productivity.

Motivation and productivity are related concepts crucial to achieving personal and professional goals. Furthermore, it is your inner drive or desire that compels you to take action, while productivity measures how efficiently and effectively you complete tasks. By understanding what motivates you, you can tailor your actions and behaviors to increase productivity.

Whether you’re in the corporate world, pursuing personal goals, or striving to make the most of each day, the insights shared in this article will empower you to harness the power of motivation and discover how it can revolutionize how you approach your goals to achieve more. By uncovering the connection between motivation and productivity, you’ll have the tools to enhance your performance and accomplish remarkable success.

Understanding the motivation-productivity connection

To truly grasp the connection between motivation and productivity, defining these two fundamental concepts in daily life is essential. From there, delving into the psychological perspective and exploring the intricacies of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation can offer more valuable insights into the connection.

Defining motivation and productivity in everyday scenarios

In everyday scenarios, motivation can manifest in different ways, such as the desire to get out of bed in the morning and start the day, the motivation to exercise and maintain a healthy lifestyle, or the motivation to pursue a career or a hobby.

So, what is motivation? According to American Psychological Association, motivation is the driving force that pushes you to achieve your goals and desires. It can help you stay focused, committed, and driven toward achieving your goals.

On the other hand, productivity in everyday scenarios refers to the ability to effectively and efficiently complete tasks or achieve goals. This can manifest in various ways, such as being able to manage your time well, staying organized, and being able to prioritize tasks. Overall, productivity is important in everyday life as it allows you to accomplish your desired outcomes and feel satisfied and accomplished.

In everyday situations, motivation and productivity are closely linked. When individuals are highly motivated to achieve their goals, they tend to be more productive and efficient in completing tasks. This is because motivation gives individuals the drive and determination to push through challenges and obstacles that may arise while completing a task.

Moreover, motivation helps individuals to stay focused and on track, which can help to increase overall productivity. As such, it is important to cultivate a sense of motivation in everyday life to maximize productivity and achieve desired outcomes.

The psychology behind the motivation-productivity connection

The connection between motivation and productivity is a well-established concept in psychology. Motivation is the driving force behind behavior, and when individuals are motivated to achieve a particular goal, they are more likely to put forth effort and complete tasks efficiently. This, in turn, leads to increased productivity.

Here are the theories that may explain the motivation-productivity connection:

Self-Determination Theory

According to this theory, when you feel a sense of autonomy (having choices), competence (feeling capable), and relatedness (connecting with others), you are more likely to be naturally motivated.

This means you do things because you genuinely enjoy them or find them satisfying. Individuals with this internal drive tend to be more productive because they put in the effort and stay determined, even when faced with challenges.

Expectancy Theory

This theory explains that your motivation is influenced by your belief that your efforts will lead to specific outcomes or rewards. The more you value the result or reward, the more motivated you become.

Thus, when one truly believes their hard work will bring them closer to something they desire, they are more likely to put in the effort and work towards achieving their goals.

Goal-Setting Theory

This theory shows that having clear, specific, and challenging goals can significantly increase productivity. Knowing precisely what you want to achieve and setting ambitious targets keeps you focused and motivated. With clear goals in mind, you are likelier to stay on track and accomplish more.

Exploring intrinsic and extrinsic influence on productivity

When it comes to motivation, two distinct types shape your behaviors: intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.

Intrinsic motivation

This refers to the internal drive that comes naturally from within you. It is the type of motivation that pushes you towards a task or goal because you genuinely enjoy it or find it personally satisfying.

For example, imagine feeling a deep satisfaction while working on a creative project simply because you love the process and the sense of accomplishment it brings. Intrinsic motivation fuels your productivity and keeps you engaged because it aligns with your needs and interests.

Extrinsic motivation

This type stems from external factors like rewards, recognition, or pressure from others. While external motivators can boost your productivity, they may provide short-term motivation.

For instance, imagine being motivated to complete a task because a bonus or prize is associated with it. However, your motivation may drop if the reward or recognition doesn’t materialize as expected.

It is important to balance intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in everyday life. You want to be driven by your desires and interests while recognizing the importance of external motivators like rewards and recognition. By finding this balance, you can stay motivated and productive in all areas of your life.

Nurturing motivation and productivity in the workplace

There are many ways to nurture your motivation and productivity in the workplace. Here are some everyday practices that you can implement:

Set goals

Setting goals can help you stay motivated and focused on what you want to achieve. Take a few minutes each morning to create a clear goal of what you must accomplish that day. This can help you stay focused and motivated throughout the day.

Take breaks

It is important to take regular breaks throughout the day to stay productive. Take short breaks to stretch your legs, get some fresh air, or simply take a few deep breaths.

Seek feedback

Feedback can help you improve your performance and stay motivated. Ask your supervisor or colleagues for feedback on your work and use it to make improvements.

Stay engaged

Enhance your engagement with your work by finding ways to make it exciting and challenging. Seek out opportunities to learn and grow in your role. This can help you stay engaged and motivated in your work.

Foster a positive work environment

Maintain a positive attitude, support, and encourage your coworkers. This can help create a positive work environment that fosters motivation and productivity.

By implementing these strategies, you can nurture your motivation and productivity in the workplace, leading to increased success and growth for you and your company.

In conclusion

At the end of the day, productivity isn’t just about getting things done. It is about finding a sense of accomplishment and purpose in your work, no matter how small the task may be. By defining what motivates you and finding ways to stay productive, you can tackle any challenge that comes your way with confidence.

As you progress through life’s journey, one inevitable stage you encounter is aging. With it comes a myriad of physical, psychological, and social changes that impact individuals and their relationships with family members. This evolving dynamic often requires adult children to step into caregiving roles for their aging parents, while older adults increasingly rely on their children or other family members for support.

Navigating the challenges within aging families can be a delicate task, particularly when differing expectations and values regarding care and support for older adults come into play. For example, one family member may believe a certain medical procedure is necessary, while another may disagree. These differences have the potential to create conflict and tension.

To address these challenges, families must take a proactive approach. Recognizing the potential challenges of caring for aging loved ones is crucial in providing the support they require. Through collective effort and a willingness to seek external assistance when necessary, families can ensure their elderly loved ones receive the care and attention they deserve while nurturing and preserving the bonds that tie them together.

This article aims to provide valuable insight and tips to assist families in their journey of caring for elderly parents. By covering various aspects of aging, including the physical and emotional situations, living environment, financial considerations, healthcare management, and preventing loneliness, the article aims to equip you with the information and practical advice needed to navigate this meaningful chapter in your family’s life.

Understanding the concept of ‘aging’

To understand the concept of ‘aging,’ you should start by asking yourself: “What is aging, and who are the elderly?”

Aging encompasses the natural progression of processes that gradually reduce an individual’s physical or mental capabilities, increasing the likelihood of a permanent decline in these capacities over time. The elderly are individuals who have reached an advanced age, typically considered 65 years or older.

However, it is important to note that aging is a natural process affecting everyone and is a complex process beyond chronological age.

Signs that the elderly need help

Next, you need to ask yourself, “Do the elderly in my family need help?” To answer your question, you may pay attention to these physical, cognitive, and emotional indicators of aging or signs that the elderly in your family needs help.

Changes in physical abilities

Muscle weakness and joint pain are common among the elderly. However, if your parents or grandparents are having serious difficulty, you must look out for these signs as they need help (Fielding et al., 2022; Jackson et al., 2012; Kenny et al., 2008):

Declines in physical function. Older people may experience a decreased ability to perform daily tasks or physical activities they once did easily, such as walking, climbing stairs, or carrying groceries.

Decreased muscle strength. Older adults may notice reduced muscle strength, leading to difficulty lifting objects, getting up from a chair, or maintaining balance.

Changes in body composition. Aging can result in an increase in fat mass and a decrease in fat-free mass (muscle and bone density). This shift can lead to changes in overall body shape and an increased risk of obesity-related health issues.

Reduced physical work capacity. Older individuals may experience a decrease in their ability to engage in physical tasks or work due to reduced aerobic and musculoskeletal capacity. This decline can impact their endurance and stamina.

Cognitive decline

This refers to the concern or difficulty with a person’s thinking, memory, and concentration. Cognitive changes in aging that may sign the elderly need help (Harrington et al., 2018; Huang et al., 2020):

Declines in verbal memory. Older adults may experience difficulties recalling and retaining verbal information, such as forgetting names, conversations, or recent events.

Working memory challenges. Aging can result in reduced working memory capacity, making it harder to hold and manipulate information in the mind. This may lead to difficulties in multitasking, following complex instructions, or remembering and executing plans.

Executive function impairments. The ability to manage and control cognitive processes, such as problem-solving, decision-making, and attentional control, may decrease with age. Older individuals may struggle with organizing tasks, switching between activities, or solving complex problems.

Slow processing speed. Aging is associated with a gradual decline in information processing speed. Older adults may take longer to process and respond to new information, leading to delays in decision-making or difficulties keeping up with fast-paced tasks.

Changes in perception and cognition. Aging can bring about variable declines in perception and cognition. Older individuals may notice changes in their ability to perceive sensory information accurately or experience challenges in thinking, reasoning, and understanding complex concepts.

Emotional changes

The changes brought on by aging might trigger various emotions in the elderly. Be alert to the emotional shifts in aging since that may be a sign they need help (Hsu, 2011; Waldman-Levi et al., 2020):

Reduced engagement and well-being. Emotional well-being plays a vital role in older adults’ participation in activities and their overall satisfaction with life. If you notice a decline in their interest or motivation to engage in social interactions or hobbies they once enjoyed, it could be a sign that they need assistance.

Impact of life events. Significant life events, such as the loss of a loved one or major life transitions, can have a profound emotional impact on older adults. If you observe persistent sadness, grief, or a decline in their overall emotional state following such events, it may indicate that they require support.

Emotional challenges related to health conditions. Chronic health conditions can lead to emotional difficulties in older adults. Managing ongoing health issues, experiencing limitations in daily activities, or coping with the loss of independence may result in feelings of anxiety, sadness, or depression.

While the presented aging indicators can be useful in spotting signs of decline in the elderly, it’s important to remember that some of these changes might also result from other factors. For example, declines in cognitive function may be related to conditions such as depression or anxiety rather than age-related changes in the brain.

Additionally, some individuals may experience slower declines in physical function or cognitive abilities due to genetic or lifestyle factors. Therefore, it is important to note that aging is a natural process, not a disease, affecting each individual differently.

Building a healthy lifestyle for the elderly

As people age, their bodies and minds undergo changes that can make it more difficult to maintain good health. By promoting healthy habits and providing support, families can help older adults stay healthy for as long as possible. Here are the five components of the Healthy Lifestyle Index (HLI) (Atallah, 2018):

Weight management

Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for overall well-being, especially as people age. Encouraging the elderly to adopt a balanced diet and engage in regular physical activity can help them manage their weight effectively.

Smoking status

Quitting smoking or avoiding tobacco use altogether is vital for promoting healthy aging. Supporting the elderly in their efforts to quit smoking can significantly improve their long-term health outcomes.

Physical activities

Staying physically active is key to maintaining strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health. Encouraging older people to engage in regular exercise or physical activities that suit their abilities can contribute to their overall well-being.

Alcohol consumption

Monitoring alcohol consumption is important for older adults to maintain their health. Moderation is key, and it is crucial to educate and support the elderly in making informed choices regarding alcohol intake.

Healthy diet

A nutritious diet plays a crucial role in healthy aging. Encouraging the elderly to adopt a balanced and varied diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can provide them with essential nutrients and contribute to their overall health.

By focusing on these five components of the HLI, families can support the elderly in building and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Offering guidance, education, and assistance tailored to their needs and abilities can significantly enhance their quality of life and promote healthy aging.

5 Home safety tips for elderly family members

It is vital for the elderly to have a safe home, as it can help them maintain their independence and dignity while also reducing the risk of accidents and injuries.

It also provides peace of mind for their loved ones, knowing they live in a secure and comfortable environment. Adapted from Sheth & Cogle (2023), here are five ways you can create a safe living environment for your aging family members:

Conduct a home safety inspection

Begin by inspecting the home to identify hazards that could lead to falls or accidents. Pay attention to walkways, stairs, bathrooms, and living spaces.

Implement appropriate modifications

Based on the home safety inspection, make the necessary modifications to reduce risks. Install grab rails in essential areas like bathrooms and staircases to provide stability and support. Consider using non-slip floor surfaces or mats to prevent slipping.

Use adequate lighting

Ensure sufficient lighting throughout the home to enhance visibility and reduce the risk of falls. Well-lit areas include hallways, entrances, and staircases. Consider using motion sensor lights for added convenience and safety at night.

Seek professional assessment

Consult with an occupational therapist or other trained professional for a comprehensive evaluation. They can provide personalized recommendations for home modifications and suggest additional components, such as clinical, physical activity, or behavioral interventions.

Regular maintenance

Regularly inspect the home for any safety issues or maintenance needs. Promptly address any concerns, such as repairing loose handrails or uneven flooring, to maintain a safe living environment.

By following these steps and prioritizing home safety, you can create a secure living environment for the elderly, minimizing the risk of falls and promoting a safe home.

Managing medications and healthcare needs

As your loved ones age, their health needs become more complex and require careful attention. Proper medication management can prevent dangerous drug interactions and ensure they receive the correct dosage of their medications.

Regular healthcare check-ups can also catch any potential health issues early on, allowing for timely treatment and better outcomes. By actively managing their healthcare needs, you can help your elderly family members maintain their independence and quality of life for as long as possible.

Adapted from Albert et al. (2022) and Tett et al. (1993), here are some practical tips for caregivers to manage the medications and healthcare needs of elderly family members:

Engage with pharmacists

Seek assistance from pharmacists who specialize in geriatric care. They can provide valuable interventions such as verbal counseling, written medication information, memory devices, and audiovisual techniques to support medication management. Remember that the effectiveness of these interventions may vary.

Active caregiver involvement

As a caregiver, actively participating in medication management for your elderly family members is important. Assist with tasks like ordering medications and maintaining medication schedules. Your involvement is crucial in ensuring they receive the right medications at the right times.

Regular medication counseling

Schedule regular counseling sessions with healthcare professionals to discuss medication-related concerns. These sessions provide an opportunity to address questions, identify potential side effects, and optimize medication management strategies based on changing healthcare needs.

By following these tips, you can effectively manage medications and address the healthcare needs of your elderly family members as a caregiver. Your active involvement, collaboration with healthcare professionals, and continuous evaluation will improve their overall well-being and medication safety.

Financial considerations for caregivers

As people age, their healthcare needs may increase and become more expensive. It’s important to plan and consider the financial resources needed to provide them with the required care.

This can help alleviate stress and ensure they receive the best possible care while also preserving their financial stability. Adapted from Xu et al. (2006), here are some tips for caregivers to consider the healthcare costs and resources for elderly family members:

Be mindful of healthcare costs

Healthcare expenses can be a significant burden for elderly individuals and their families. As a caregiver, carefully consider the financial aspects of healthcare.

Be aware that their financial situation can affect their access to healthcare services and the choices available to them. Explore options for financial assistance, discounts, or programs designed to alleviate the cost of medications, treatments, and healthcare services.

Ensure adequate insurance coverage

Explore different insurance options and strive to secure appropriate coverage for your elderly family members. Insurance increases the likelihood of healthcare service utilization, ensuring they can receive necessary medical care.

Seek support and resources

Stay informed about available healthcare resources, support groups, and organizations that assist caregivers and elderly individuals. These resources can offer valuable guidance on navigating healthcare costs, accessing affordable medications, and exploring financial aid options.

By considering healthcare costs and resources for your elderly family members, you can help ensure they receive the necessary medical care without undue financial strain. Be proactive in exploring insurance options, seeking support, and advocating for their healthcare needs to enhance their access to quality healthcare services.

Preventing loneliness among the elderly

Loneliness can negatively affect the physical and mental health of the elderly. By actively working to prevent loneliness among elderly family members, you can help them maintain a higher quality of life and overall well-being. Here are some tips for caregivers to help their elderly family members prevent loneliness:

Encourage social engagement

Support your elderly family members to participate in social activities that align with their interests and abilities. This could include joining community groups, clubs, or organizations where they can interact with like-minded individuals and form new friendships.

Promote physical activity

Physical activity contributes to overall well-being and provides opportunities for social interaction. Encourage your elderly family member to join in walking groups, exercise classes, or outdoor hobbies involving socializing with others.

Support intergenerational interactions

Foster opportunities for intergenerational interactions where older adults can engage with younger individuals. This can include volunteering at schools, participating in mentorship programs, or joining intergenerational community initiatives.

Provide access to technology

Ensure that your elderly family member can access technology, such as smartphones or tablets, to facilitate communication and connection with others.

Implementingthese strategies can help prevent loneliness among elderly family members and promote their overall well-being. Remember, fostering social connectedness, supporting engagement, and providing opportunities for meaningful interactions are key to enhancing their quality of life.

In conclusion

On the journey through life’s later chapters, caring for elderly family members requires a proactive and compassionate approach. Navigating the challenges that arise within aging families can be complex.

However, by recognizing the signs of aging, building a healthy lifestyle, creating a safe home environment, managing medications and healthcare needs, considering financial resources, and preventing loneliness, families can provide the support and care their elderly loved ones deserve.

Through collective effort, understanding, and the willingness to adapt, families can embrace this meaningful chapter and nurture the bonds that tie them together, ensuring that their elderly family members experience a fulfilling and dignified journey through aging.

In the fast-paced world that people live in today, maintaining a healthy balance between work and personal life has become increasingly important. For working parents, this balance is even more crucial. Successfully juggling a demanding career with parenting responsibilities is challenging and requires careful planning and dedication.

However, it is also an undertaking that can lead to feelings of stress, exhaustion, and a decline in personal well-being. On top of that, the desire to excel in one’s career while being there for one’s children can create a sense of guilt, further complicating the balancing act. It is essential for working parents to find ways to prioritize their time and energy and to make sure that they are taking care of themselves as well as their children and work responsibilities.

Even though it is not always easy to juggle the demands of a career with the family’s needs, finding a healthy balance may help. You can create a more harmonious and satisfying life for yourself and your loved ones by taking simple steps.

This article will provide effective tips and strategies to help working parents balance work and family responsibilities. Also, this article helps ensure you can succeed in your career and family life.

Identify your priorities

Prioritization is important for several reasons. Concentrating on the tasks that matter most allows you to optimize your use of time and resources and effectively distribute your time and energy. Doing so helps you achieve your goals more efficiently and effectively.

A Harvard Business Review article (Boyes, 2018) highlights the tendency for people to prioritize tasks with the shortest deadlines, even if those tasks aren’t the most important or valuable. To save time and effort, it is essential to deliberate how you allocate your time and prioritize tasks according to their significance and impact.

Here are some tips for identifying priorities between work and family responsibilities:

Start by defining what is most important to you personally and professionally. Making informed decisions and concentrating your time and energy on the most valuable and significant tasks is important to optimize your performance.

Communicate with your employer to explore flexible working arrangements that help you better manage your time, such as working from home or adjusting your hours.

Creating a schedule with work and family responsibilities can help you stay focused and avoid distractions.

Setting clear boundaries between work and family time is crucial. You can prioritize spending quality time with your family by avoiding checking work emails or taking calls outside your working hours.

Be realistic about what you can achieve daily, and don’t overcommit. It’s okay to delegate tasks or say no if necessary.

Utilize effective communication

Balancing work and family responsibilities can be challenging for many people. Communicating regularly and openly with everyone involved, including family members and employers, is one way to cope with this challenge. Communication can clarify expectations, share feelings, solve problems, and be a tool for supporting each other.

Here are some effective communication strategies to consider (Bisschoff et al., 2018):

Establish clear boundaries

Communicate with your family members about your work schedule and responsibilities. Discuss when you’ll be unavailable for family activities and ensure they understand the importance of respecting these boundaries.

Communicate openly at home and work

Encourage open communication with your family members and colleagues. Make it a habit to have regular conversations with your spouse and children about their needs and concerns.

Enhance support systems

Establish a support system of colleagues and family members who can help you manage your work and responsibilities. Keep them informed about your schedule and communicate your needs and expectations.

Plan, prioritize, and manage time

Develop a plan for balancing your work and family responsibilities. Discuss your priorities with your family members and collaborate on a schedule that works for everyone. Communicate regularly about any changes to the plan.

Promote a healthy work environment

Communicate your needs and expectations with your employer to ensure a reasonable workload and work environment. Discuss any concerns or issues affecting your ability to balance work and family responsibilities.

Assess personal and family needs

Regularly assess your needs and those of your family members. Communicate with them about any changes in your work or family situation that may require adjustments to your work-family balance plan.

Practice self-care

Self-care refers to taking care of one’s own physical, mental, and emotional well-being and happiness, particularly during stress. This is important for managing stress when juggling work and family because it can help reduce the negative effects of stress on the mind and body.

By taking time to care for oneself, one can cope better with stress and prevent or reduce these problems. Self-care should not be viewed as a self-indulgent or selfish activity but as an essential and advantageous aspect of maintaining a healthy and well-balanced lifestyle.

Several self-care tips can help reduce stress caused by work-family conflict. Here are some effective tips to help you practice self-care and manage work-family conflict (Robinson et al., 2011; American Psychological Association, 2019; Kubala & Jennings, 2022):

Distinguish between the ‘shoulds’ and the ‘musts’ in your life

By recognizing what is essential and what can be delegated or postponed, you can avoid overcommitting yourself and feeling overwhelmed.

Create a self-care routine

Prioritize your own needs and make time for self-care activities each day. This might include engaging in physical activity, practicing mindfulness, or pursuing hobbies you enjoy. You can replenish your energy and reduce stress by carving out your time.

Get enough sleep

Getting enough sleep and maintaining a regular sleep routine is also critical for reducing stress and promoting overall health. It is recommended to strive for sufficient sleep by getting at least 7-8 hours of rest each night. Also, establishing a relaxing bedtime routine can help you unwind before sleeping.

Eat a balanced diet

A healthy, balanced diet is also essential for reducing stress and promoting physical and mental well-being. To maintain a healthy diet, it is crucial to include a diverse range of fruits and vegetables, lean protein sources, and whole grains while minimizing the consumption of processed and sugary foods.

Practice relaxation techniques

Integrating relaxation techniques into your daily routine, such as participating in yoga, meditation, deep breathing, or visualization, can be beneficial in reducing stress and inducing relaxation.

Connect with others

Connecting with others and seeking social support is another important aspect of self-care. Spend time with loved ones, join a support group, or connect with others with similar interests or experiences.

Outsourcing and delegating

Delegating and outsourcing effectively increase productivity and give more time for important responsibilities like family. Delegating refers to giving a task or responsibility to someone in your network, organization, or team. While outsourcing involves hiring a freelancer, contractor, or agency outside your organization to handle a specific project or task.

Through successful delegation and outsourcing of tasks, it is possible to dedicate more time to family responsibilities without compromising productivity or quality. Adapted from LinkedIn (n.d.) and Landry (2022), here are some strategies for outsourcing or delegating tasks to free up time for family responsibilities:

Identify which tasks can be delegated or outsourced

Delegate repetitive, routine, or low-priority tasks, such as administrative work, data entry, or scheduling appointments. Outsource tasks that require specialized skills or knowledge that you don’t have, such as graphic design, web development, or legal advice.

Determine who to delegate or outsource to

When delegating, choose someone within your team, organization, or network with the necessary skills and experience to handle the task. When outsourcing, research and select a reputable provider with a track record of delivering high-quality work and meeting deadlines.

Communicate clearly

Clearly define the task or project, expected outcomes and deadlines, and available resources and support. Provide all the necessary information, instructions, and feedback to complete the task satisfactorily.

Establish accountability

It is important to clearly establish and outline the duties and accountabilities of each individual involved, set milestones and checkpoints to monitor progress, and establish a system of feedback and evaluation to ensure that the task is completed on time and to the desired standard.

Consider the risks

It is important to consider the potential threats of delegation and outsourcing, including reduced quality, consistency, or alignment; squandering of resources; loss of control, ownership, or security; negative impact on reputation or relationships; and a missed opportunity for learning and personal development. Mitigate these risks by choosing the right tasks and providers, communicating clearly, and establishing accountability.

In conclusion

Finding a balance between work and family is a unique journey for each person, and there is no universal solution. And the tips from this article can help you achieve a more harmonious and fulfilling life, such as prioritization, communicating your needs, delegating tasks, and making time for yourself. These tips may inspire you to take action and find a balance that works for you and your family.

Remember that balance is not a fixed state but a dynamic process that requires constant adjustment and adaptation. Be kind to yourself and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small they may seem. You deserve a happy and healthy work-family balance in your life.

Experiencing the loss of a loved one can be a very challenging and emotional experience for anyone. The grieving process is often complicated, which can make it difficult to know how to support someone going through it. Adding to this complexity, family dynamics can also contribute to potential conflicts due to differing opinions, emotions, and coping mechanisms.

Bereavement can be defined as a shared experience of mourning and the reorganization of family processes following the loss of a loved one, which requires healthy adaptation skills for acceptance and transformation of identity. Still, it can also result in maladaptive patterns if dysfunctionally dealt with.

One of the most important things you can do to support a grieving family member is to be present and available. However, navigating family dynamics in bereavement can be challenging, especially when everyone is dealing with their own emotions and coping mechanisms.

This article will discuss how to find purpose after losing a loved one and how to handle family dynamics during bereavement. While it’s completely normal to feel at a loss for words or unsure of how to help, certain things can be unhelpful or even harmful during this time. By understanding what actions and attitudes to avoid and what to do instead, you can support your loved one through their grieving process and help them discover life’s meaning and purpose again.

Understanding the grieving process

When someone experiences loss, it’s common to feel sad and go through different emotions. It’s called grieving, and there are different stages to it. Knowing these stages can help you understand and deal with the feelings better. Kübler-Ross (2014) identified five stages of grief, including:

Stage 1: Denial

At this stage, you may not believe or you try to avoid accepting that you have lost someone. You may also feel a sense of shock and numbness during this time.

Stage 2: Anger

As the initial shock and disbelief of denial start to fade, it’s common to feel angry after experiencing a loss. This anger can be directed at many things, such as yourself, your family member, or even a higher power.

It’s understandable to feel overwhelmed and confused during this time as you try to come to terms with the loss and how it has affected your life. Just know that these emotions are a natural part of the grieving process and that it’s okay to feel them.

Stage 3: Bargaining

During the third stage of grief, you may try to make deals with yourself or a higher power to stop the loss from happening. You may promise to do something in return for the person or thing you are losing.

This is a way to control the situation and avoid the inevitable. However, this stage usually doesn’t work out in the end, and the loss still occurs.

Stage 4: Depression

It’s common to feel sad and hopeless after experiencing a loss, especially as you start to realize how it will affect your life from now on. This is called depression, and it’s a normal part of the grieving process.

It’s important to know that you’re not alone in feeling this way, and there are people who can support you through it. Seeking help from loved ones or a professional can be really helpful in managing these feelings.

Stage 5: Acceptance

When you reach the stage of acceptance, it means that you have learned to live with the loss and have found a way to move forward. You have come to the reality that things have changed and adapted your life to fit the new circumstances.

It’s important to note that acceptance doesn’t mean that the person has completely moved on and forgotten about the loss, but rather that they have found a way to integrate it into their lives and continue living.

Navigating family dynamics during bereavement

Losing a loved one can trigger various emotional and physical responses (Jaaniste et al., 2017). Psychological responses to parental bereavement can be particularly challenging. This type of loss can lead to heightened anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and reduced quality of life. Individuals may also struggle with feelings of guilt, anger, and loneliness.

Physical outcomes that have been reported in response to parental bereavement include a greater risk of cardiovascular problems, such as heart attacks and strokes, as well as an increased risk of cancer.

Additionally, those who experience parental bereavement may have higher mortality rates due to natural and unnatural causes. As a family, supporting each other during this time and navigating the loss together is vital.

Dealing with the loss of a loved one is already challenging, and navigating the dynamics of a family during this time can make it even more difficult. However, adapted from the University of Rochester (n.d.) and Utah State University (n.d.), below are practical steps that you can take to help each other cope and support one another through the grieving process:

Accept the changes that come with loss

When you’re dealing with the loss of a loved one, there are a lot of changes that happen. Some of the traditions you’re used to might need to be adjusted, and people’s roles within the family may change too. It can also be tough to get through special occasions like holidays and birthdays, not to mention the death anniversary. That’s why it’s important to plan ahead and be prepared for these tough times as a family.

Respect each family member’s grieving process

Avoid trying to fit their emotions to other people’s expectations. Everyone has a different relationship with the deceased and will need to work through their loss in their own way. Acknowledge and appreciate differences in mourning, as grief can be expressed differently. Remember that different “languages” of grief are neither better nor worse, but just different.

Adjust to the current life

If the loved one plays a significant role in the family, finding ways for other members to fulfill these responsibilities or let them go is essential. This is not about replacing the loved one, who is irreplaceable, but about adjusting to life now in ways that promote long-term well-being.

Look after your loved ones

It’s essential to be there for your child and let them know they aren’t alone in their feelings. As a role model for grieving, sharing about your sorrow can help your child feel less isolated.

Supporting a grieving family member

It can be challenging to see someone you care about suffer the loss of a loved one. Knowing how to support them can be overwhelming, but it’s important to remember that you can take steps to help them through the grieving process. Adapted from the University of Washington (n.d.), here are some tips to keep in mind:

Allow them to grieve

Gently give them the time they need to process their loss rather than expecting them to adhere to a set timeline for their grief.

Acknowledge their emotions

Encourage them to express their emotions in healthy ways, such as journaling or talking with a therapist.

Give them space

Offering space for them to have alone time to remember their loved ones can also be helpful while encouraging them to maintain healthy routines such as regular meals and exercise.

Consider other ways to support

During times of grief, suggesting relaxing activities and encouraging hobbies can provide a sense of normalcy. Providing helpful resources and information about grieving can also help individuals understand and navigate their emotions. Additionally, creating opportunities for families to come together and cherish memories of their loved ones can be a powerful way to honor their memory and provide comfort during this difficult time.

What not to do when supporting a grieving family member

Losing a loved one is one of the most challenging things anyone can go through. It can be hard to know what to say or do to help someone who is grieving, especially when you haven’t experienced a similar loss yourself.

Unfortunately, even with the best intentions, sometimes our efforts to provide comfort and support can unintentionally do more harm than good. To avoid adding to the person’s pain, it’s crucial to be mindful of the following practices adapted from The Recovery Village (2022) that are not helpful when supporting a grieving family member:

Don’t try to force closure

Closure is not always possible or necessary for grieving people, and it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. Avoid suggesting they should “move on” or “find closure,” as it can be insensitive and dismissive of their emotions.

Don’t rush the grieving process

Grief is a personal journey that takes time and is different for everyone. Trying to speed up the process can be counterproductive and may make them feel like they’re not allowed to process their emotions fully.

Don’t downplay their emotions

It’s essential to validate their feelings and acknowledge the pain they’re experiencing. Minimizing their grief or telling them how they should feel can be hurtful and make them feel unsupported.

Don’t make assumptions

Everyone’s experience with grief is unique, so avoid making assumptions about what they need or how they’re feeling. Ask them how you can support them, and listen to what they say.

Don’t disappear

Grief can be isolating, and showing up for your loved one is important. Even if you don’t know what to say or do, just being present and available can make a difference.

In conclusion

It is important to remember that grief is a complex and individual experience that can be challenging and transformative. While there is no one-size-fits-all approach to supporting a grieving family member, the information provided in this article may help you understand some of the key considerations and practices that can be helpful. It is of the utmost importance to be patient, kind, and non-judgmental when offering support and to avoid well-intentioned but ultimately harmful behaviors.

Lastly, the most important thing you can do for a grieving family member is to be there for them in whatever way they need. Remember, supporting a grieving family member is not about “fixing” their grief but rather being there and offering a listening ear and a helping hand. With patience, empathy, and understanding, you can help your loved one navigate their grief and find purpose after loss.

Every child deserves a fulfilling, loving home. Nevertheless, there are a lot of possible situations where some children may not be able to experience what a loving home is. Amid this circumstance, some families yearn to have children and raise them accordingly to the type of family they want. Adoption then serves as a beneficial solution for both parents and children.

Adoption is defined as a legal process of transferring parental rights and responsibilities to adoptive parents. Although it has been seen as one simple act, adoption is a long process for everyone involved: the adoptive families, the adopted children, and the children’s birth families. Despite the long process, adopting is still a popular option for people to expand their families.

From a social perspective, people may perceive adoption as an act of generosity by the adoptive parents. Meanwhile, from the adopted children’s side, the adoption process may be perceived as a chance for them to grow in a better environment. These two common reasons may serve as the reasons why adoption remains favored.

Nevertheless, there is more to discover about the advantages of adoption or how it is related to overall enrichment from both sides of the adoptive families and the adopted children.

How adoption enriches the family

The process of starting a family is a challenging task for every couple. Whether the family is formed through a biological or legal adoption process, struggles are inevitable. However, every challenging situation is worth the complex work. For adoption, the long unique process offers the family some advantages.

Offers the chance to experience parenthood

Parenthood may be a desirable experience for some people. However, people may come from many different backgrounds and health situations that may have hindered them from having a child. In such situations, adoption serves as a solution to experiencing parenthood. Some various cases of adoptive parents include (A Child’s Hope, n.d.):

The potential adoptive parents cannot produce a child on their own due to their inability to conceive.

The potential adoptive parent does not already have any biological children and is open to having an adopted child as a part of their family.

The prospective adoptive parents are a couple of the same gender who want to raise the child together.

Thus, during the adoption process, single adults and couples can share their lives with a child and enjoy the rewarding experience of parenthood.

Provides fulfillment

A family may acquire a greater sense of purpose through the adoption process. A sense of fulfillment may arise from their caretaker role by providing the children with a loving and safe environment. Through adoption, the family connection may improve as the family has to adapt and adjust to the addition of a new family member. By working together through difficult situations that may emerge, they strengthen their family relationship.

Benefits of adoption for children

The adoption process is supposed to be beneficial and gratifying for everyone involved. And the adopted children should ultimately have a sense of fulfillment as a result of the adoption process that may come from having a loving home and stability.

Provides a loving home

Adoption gives the children the opportunity to be a part of a family that has been wanting and preparing to provide them with a loving home. Not only a caring environment from the adoptive family, but the children may also receive love from their biological parents if the adoption process works well. A loving home may make the children feel like they are totally incorporated into the family.

Provides stability for better development

As children advance from one developmental level to another, they gain new cognitive abilities and psychosocial structures. In adoption, where each party has a healthy relationship with the other, the children will form a favorable impression (Neil, 2012). Consequently, the experience of being loved and cared for may improve their development.

Making adoption work

It is essential to ensure that adoption works so everyone may benefit from it. The following criteria, according to Siegel and Smith (2012), are crucial to developing effective open-adoption relationships:

Shared understanding of what open adoption is and is not

To ensure successful open adoption, both birth and adoptive parents must share a common understanding of what it entails and what it doesn’t. This includes establishing ground rules for ethical decision-making, prioritizing the child’s needs, clarifying each party’s roles and responsibilities, and comprehending the benefits, challenges, and complexities that may arise.

Foundational relationship qualities and values

Empathy, respect, honesty, trust, and a commitment to maintaining the connection are ideal for open relationship parties.

Ability to choose and shape open relationships on own term

Both sides must understand that the connection evolves, and they can navigate it collaboratively.

Collaborative communication

It is crucial to develop ‘collaborative communication’ by all parties in contact planning and conveying. This includes ensuring everyone is comfortable and honest in communicating and planning for connection.

In conclusion

Adoption is a beautiful way of enriching many lives by saving one child and brightening more people in adoptive families. This is why adoption remains favored despite its complexity. Some of the reasons behind adoption may be personal to the adoptive families. However, at the fundamental line, adoption’s core importance is building families.

People work hard to strive for excellence. And when you think of ‘perfectionism,’ you might think the same as striving for excellence, which is a healthy way to achieve many things. However, that is ultimately the opposite. Perfectionism is not healthy and is a harmful way to achieve goals.

So, what is perfectionism? American Psychological Association defines perfectionism as the tendency to demand from others or oneself an extremely high or flawless performance over what is required by the situation. In other words, perfectionists have such brutally high standards that anything less than perfect is unacceptable.

Perfectionism then becomes harmful because perfectionists do not seek personal development and advancement. Instead, perfectionists create unachievable success standards and are frustrated when they fail to meet them. Furthermore, setting excessive standards for yourself and feeling unable to reach those standards may result in recurring feelings of unfulfilled expectations, which, if unresolved, can lead to depression.

How to recognize perfectionism

You can start with a question:

“Have I ever wished for everything to be correct or perfect because I perceive anything less than perfect as a failure?”

If your answer to the question is “yes,” you might want to know more about recognizing extreme or obsessive striving for perfection.

You set unrealistic achievement standards

Perfectionism is a misguided attempt to gain the acceptance of others and repair feelings of worthlessness and shame through displays of high achievement. As a result, perfectionists feel forced to establish their worth, set more ambitious and unrealistic standards, and begin to define themselves only in terms of personal achievement. In other words, they view themselves as worthy only if they have met their unrealistic standards.

You are overly concerned with mistakes, and you have a fear of failure

Perfectionists are so concerned about mistakes — even little ones — that lead to the idea that their standards have not been reached. People who are perfectionists tend to overgeneralize their mistakes and failures. They take one mistake and use it to label themselves as a failure.

Perfectionists are afraid to disappoint or displease others and are unwilling to expose their struggles, shortcomings, and vulnerabilities for fear of being judged. Perfectionists have a strong desire to be liked, accepted, and valued. Fear and anxiety lurk behind the surface of all these efforts to establish their worth.

Why perfectionism is destructive to productivity

Perfectionism is easily assumed to be something productive. However, this harmful way of thinking, behaving, and feeling destroys productivity. Harari et al. (2018) have documented how perfectionism damages productivity in the workplace.

Perfectionism leads to job burnout

Job burnout is a chronic psychological condition marked by emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and decreased personal efficacy. Employees with greater degrees of perfectionism are likely to face higher levels of emotional exhaustion and reduced effectiveness at work. This is due to severe expectations they set on themselves and their tendency to doubt their capacity to satisfy job demands.

Perfectionism causes poor performance

Individuals with a high level of perfectionism are likely to have lower motivation since they are concerned about performing poorly, which might be counterproductive. They may place significant demands on themselves, affecting a variety of mental well-being indicators. They are also likely to experience higher stress levels since they are more likely to have questions about the quality of their work and a reduced ability to cope with perceived job problems.

Perfectionism reduces work engagement

Individuals with higher degrees of failure-avoidance perfectionism may have lower levels of work engagement due to a greater tendency to have concerns and doubts about their behavior. On the other hand, employees without this failure-avoidance perfectionism are likely to have higher levels of engagement due to their rigid concentration on achievement and equivalent expenditure of energy on their job.

In conclusion

Being a perfectionist is not simply doing your best but doing even better than an unrealistically high level of performance, leaving you feeling that even your best efforts are lacking. Perfectionism will make people continually pursue perfection, but perfectionists will never find it because perfection is impossible. Understanding that failure is not a weakness is critical because failure is only an occurrence, not an identity. Furthermore, there are always benefits to embracing flaws and learning from mistakes.

Everyone has a goal they want to achieve within a certain amount of time. As a target to pursue, goals regulate one’s actions that need the devotion of mental and physical energy to achieve them.

However, achieving even a single goal is not always easy. A study from university students in the Netherlands revealed that only 38% of students achieve the goals they set for themselves.

So, what makes achieving goals hard? The above study found that when achieving goals, the uncertainty of what people must do to achieve particular goals might be the reason. That is where goal-setting plays a vital role where it helps people to make a detailed plan of what they should do to achieve their goals, instead of only having a goal in their mind.

What is goal-setting?

Imagine that someone has a goal that they want to achieve. The next thing that person has to do is to create a plan that encourages and directs their movement toward their goal — a process called goal-setting.

According to Eckhoff (2020), goal-setting is the action of a person with the confidence, commitment, motivation, and knowledge necessary to attain a specific, challenging, measurable, and relevant goal within a specified time. In other words, goal-setting is not just about having a goal. It is a process of detailed planning that answers the questions of where, when, how, or whom.

The unique part of goal-setting is that everyone can use it effectively in any aspect. For example, goal-setting also plays a significant role in the workplace. A study found that employees who had a precise goal to achieve each day improved far more than those who only received advice to try their best. The finding indicates that setting goals might be helpful in various situations.

Importance of goal-setting

It is a well-known fact that goal-setting helps people to achieve their goals. However, there is more to that.

Has positive effects

In general, goal-setting has some positive impacts on people’s lives. Positive behavior changes, a rise in self-esteem, satisfaction in oneself, a sense of pride, and a sensation of being energized are some of the benefits of goal-setting.

Helps recovery from mental illnesses

Moreover, setting goals can also be a helpful step in recovering from a mental illness. Depression and anxiety are common disorders that can make it difficult to function at work or home or to relate to others. Goal-setting can be used as part of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) to begin the process of recovery and rebuild a meaningful life.

Clarifies life’s purpose

Last but not least, to summarize why everyone should set goals is because goal-setting can provide meaning and purpose in life. Setting goals allows people to examine where they are now, where they want to go, and how far they have come. In conclusion, setting goals enables everyone to reflect on things beyond their careers.

Criteria of effective goal setting

Having many goals does not necessarily mean one knows how to set them, nor does it mean they are close to achieving their goals. In effective goal-setting exercises, some attributes must be present. These critical attributes of goal-setting can help you achieve your goals:

The goal is specific

When asked to achieve a specified goal, people perform better. Individuals should not be asked to improve, strive more, or do their best since such a goal does not provide them with a clear target. Instead, individuals can set specific goals to help them know what to aim for and track their progress. You can quickly check this attribute of your goals by asking yourself: “What exactly am I trying to achieve?”

The goal is challenging but achievable

A goal that is effortless to achieve will not result in the anticipated outcomes. A crucial criterion is that a goal must be challenging enough to improve performance. Although people will work hard to achieve challenging goals, they will only do so if the goals are within their capabilities. Following the explanation, you can ask yourself: “Do I feel challenged? Is it possible to achieve this goal?”

The goal can be quantified

The influence of goals grows when individuals understand that their performance will be evaluated on how well they accomplish them. In other words, the goal should be measurable. For this attribute, you can ask yourself: “How can I track my progress?”

The goal is relevant to the desired outcome

This attribute is focused on ensuring that your goal is important to you and that it also fits with other relevant goals. Your goals should be consistent with your broader long-term goals. You can ask yourself: “Why am I setting this goal? Will this goal contribute or align with my other goals?”

The goal has a finish point

Goals that include a deadline for accomplishment are more effective for most people. Deadlines help to keep track of time and boost the motivating impact of goals. To ensure you have this attribute in your goal, ask yourself: “Does my goal have a deadline or a reasonable time to achieve?”

In conclusion

Goal-setting is a powerful tool for everyone that wants to see a desirable outcome in their life. However, simply setting goals doesn’t mean you will consistently achieve your goals. Remember that even if you face failure in achieving goals, it should not stop you. You can learn from it, revisit your goals, and maybe, once again, try to set them more efficiently.
