Self-care is essential for the improvement of one’s overall well-being and happiness. This podcast episode revolves around how self-care is helpful for those who struggle with emotional eating, negative self-talk, and feel overwhelmed or burnt out.
Laura Heath is a registered pharmacist and certified health and wellness coach with a focus on emotional eating psychology. After working as a hospital pharmacist for 20 years, she founded Your Highest Self Coaching, specializing in corporate wellness and emotional eating.
She coaches women to heal their emotional relationship with food and increase their self-worth. Laura has the belief that permanent change comes from learning to love oneself fully and changing one’s thoughts to drive positive actions.
Her coaching expanded into a corporate wellness space, offering coaching, workshops, and lunch-and-learn opportunities on various topics. She lives her purpose by embodying the “stress is enhancing” mindset.
In this episode hosted by Lu Ngo, Laura shared that the biggest misconception about happiness is that people tend to look for it outside of themselves. She explained that happiness is a state of being that can be cultivated from within rather than something external like a job or material possessions.
According to Laura, self-care involves doing things that make you feel good, nurture you, and help you show up as the best version of yourself. She emphasized the importance of developing awareness of what fills your “cup,” describing it as “unbeautiful self-care,” which is doing what feels good to you and fills your cup, regardless of how it looks to others.
She also added that happiness is found in the present moment by connecting with positive emotions while avoiding negative emotions caused by dwelling on past or future events.
Moreover, she stressed that it’s important to recognize that self-care isn’t necessarily what the media portrays it to be but rather what serves your mind and body. Self-care isn’t selfish because if you don’t take care of yourself first, you won’t have enough to give to others.
As you approach self-care, it’s important to start with self-compassion and kindness towards yourself. Avoid approaching self-care with rules and restrictions that society puts on you. Trust yourself to take care of yourself. Use a softer approach to self-care, and remember that loving yourself is the key to a fulfilling self-care practice.
