Have you ever questioned why people are repeatedly attracted to certain kinds of partners? Explore the power of collective beliefs and how these shape — sometimes even shift — individual romantic preferences. Tune in for a compelling look into how societal influences on love choices learn thoughtful tools for deeper self-reflection.

Meet Georgi Gardiner

Georgi Gardiner is a philosopher at the University of Tennessee specializing in epistemology and meta-philosophy. She earned her Ph.D. from Rutgers University and previously held the Andrew Fraser Junior Research Fellowship at St. John’s College, Oxford. Her research spans topics such as understanding, explanation, virtue epistemology, and the ethics of belief.

Georgi’s current work explores evidence law, the epistemology of rape, and the role of statistical evidence in judgment, with growing interest in the epistemic impact of attention and doubt. She also engages with philosophy of science, social philosophy, and the philosophy of sex.

About the episode

In this episode of Reloscope, Georgi defines relationships as ubiquitous and deeply important, emphasizing that their endings do not signify failure. She values the differences in relationships, citing neighborliness versus professional connections as examples. Georgi appreciates the unique distance in each type of relationship.

Georgi believes media and advertising significantly shape people’s understanding of love and attraction. She points out how advertising steers preferences, using the aversion to women’s body hair as an example of societal influence. Also, language plays a powerful role, with terms like “holiday romance” influencing experiences and self-conceptions.

Georgi also explores how labels impact love experiences, directing attention and aiding sense-making. She uses the term “alterous attraction” or “squish” to illustrate how having a label can help individuals understand their feelings towards friends, preventing confusion with romantic or sexual attraction. She also touches on the term “limerence” and how it affects people’s understanding of love and obsessive infatuation.

In conclusion

Georgi Gardiner explores how media, language, and societal labels shape people’s perceptions of love, attraction, and emotional experience. Her reflections highlight the nuanced and evolving nature of human relationships. Through this lens, she encourages deeper self-awareness and acceptance of the complex dynamics that influence romantic ideals.

In this insightful episode, Marie and Maryann explore how trauma affects physical intimacy within relationships. They discuss common misconceptions, the healing power of intimacy, and practical strategies for couples to reconnect emotionally and physically after experiencing trauma.

Meet Maryann Karinch

Maryann Karinch is an accomplished author and human behavior expert, renowned for her extensive contributions to the fields of health and personal relationships. With 31 commercially published books to her name, she has established herself as a significant voice in exploring the complexities of human behavior, focusing particularly on themes such as intimacy, trauma, and personal development.

In addition to her solo efforts, Maryann has collaborated with various professionals, including doctors and therapists, on several of her books.

Notable titles among her works include Mature Sexual Intimacy, which addresses the nuances of intimacy in later life, and Sex and Cancer: Intimacy, Love, and Romance after Diagnosis and Treatment, co-authored with Dr. Saketh Guntupalli. These books reflect her commitment to helping individuals and couples navigate the challenges of intimacy, especially in the face of significant life changes or health crises.

About the episode

From the outset, the episode highlights a crucial reality: trauma can leave deep emotional scars that significantly impact relationships. Maryann says that one of the most common misconceptions is the belief that physical intimacy should be avoided following traumatic experiences.

In fact, she argues that intimacy can be a powerful healing force. This perspective encourages listeners to embrace intimacy as a vital part of the recovery process, rather than shying away from it.

Throughout the conversation, she invites listeners to reflect on their relationships, urging them to recognize the importance of mutual connection. A relationship, she explains, thrives on shared goals and emotional support, contrasting this with superficial connections that lack depth and reciprocity.

Here are several key strategies discussed in the episode that can help couples restore physical intimacy after experiencing trauma:

Embrace physical intimacy. Engage in small gestures like holding hands or hugging to foster connection and release feel-good hormones like oxytocin.

Communicate openly. Discuss your feelings, needs, and fears with your partner. Honest communication about what you both want and need can help rebuild trust and intimacy.

Understand attachment styles. Identify your own attachment style (secure, anxious, avoidant) and recognize how it affects your relationship dynamics. This understanding can help you communicate more effectively and address issues as they arise.

Create a safe environment. Establish a safe and supportive space for both partners to express their feelings. Be aware of what triggers anxiety for each other and work together to minimize those triggers.

Focus on self-reflection: Take time to understand your own preferences and comfort levels. Engage in activities that make you feel good, whether it’s cooking, exercising, or pursuing hobbies.

Seek professional help: If needed, consider therapy, particularly emotionally focused therapy (EFT), which can help explore attachment styles and improve communication between partners.

In conclusion

This episode is not just a discussion; it’s a motivational journey inviting you to explore the healing potential of intimacy. Whether you’ve experienced trauma yourself or are seeking to strengthen your relationship, this episode offers practical insights and encouragement. So, tune in, reflect on your connections, and remember: nurturing physical intimacy after trauma can lead to deeper, more meaningful relationships.

Relationships can be challenging, especially when stress and conflict arise. Many couples struggle to navigate these difficult moments, unsure how to work through their differences. Dr Liz shared her perspective on common relationship misconceptions, sources of stress, and strategies for overcoming challenges as a couple.

Meet Dr. Liz Jenkins

Dr Liz Jenkins helps couples reconnect, repair, and reignite their love, quickly transforming their relationships or marriages into their early years’ connection and passion. She is a trusted expert who quickly identifies each couple’s and individual’s unique path for success in their self-love and relationships.

She’s currently featured as a relationship expert in Dave Ramsey’s Online Dating Facebook Group and Singles Collective Facebook Group, a featured Podcast guest on shows such as The Fit & Fabulous Podcast with Dr. Jamie Seeman, and a Masterclass on Relationships with Kyle Gillette.

She’s also a published author. Her true passion and superpower is guiding couples to identify their unique path to relationship success.

About the episode

According to research, 65% of divorced couples said that if they had known more about what it takes to maintain a long-term relationship, they may have been able to work things out.

One of the biggest misconceptions Dr Liz encounters is that relationships are supposed to be easy. Many people believe that if they’re meant to be with someone, everything will be smooth sailing with only minor bumps.

In reality, even strong couples face stress and conflict. You don’t see publicly the behind-the-scenes efforts of successful couples to communicate effectively, work through disagreements, and support each other through difficult times.

Dr Liz defines relationship stress as when external or internal factors, big or small, create tension or cracks in a couple’s connection. The familiar sources of relationship stress can include:

Career choices and changes

Parenting differences

Division of household responsibilities

Relationships with family and friends

Financial issues

Common warning signs include avoidance, increased tension, frequent arguments over trivial matters, and persistent anger or resentment. Couples may experience a decline in intimacy and struggle to enjoy time together, leading to a focus on negative aspects of the relationship.

According to Dr Liz, resentment is particularly damaging, as it gradually diminishes the perceived value of the partner and the relationship when left unresolved.

Dr Liz recommends several strategies to navigate relationship stress that encourage reconnection and effective communication:

Self-awareness: Individuals must acknowledge their behaviors and contributions to the relationship dynamic.

Engage in meaningful discussions: This approach can prevent conflicts from intensifying, while using “I” statements fosters open communication without triggering defensiveness.

Cultivating curiosity: Asking questions rather than making assumptions helps deepen understanding between partners.

Take breaks from heated conversations: Focusing on relationship strengths and creating positive experiences can help rebuild emotional bonds.

In cases where stress persists, seeking professional support from a couples therapist or relationship coach can provide valuable guidance.

Preventing relationship stress requires ongoing effort and intentional habits. Dr Liz suggests daily check-ins to maintain emotional connection, weekly discussions to address minor concerns, and monthly check-ups for a more in-depth review of relationship dynamics.

In conclusion

All couples face challenges – how you work through them together matters most. With the right tools and mindset, relationship stress can become an opportunity for growth and deeper intimacy rather than a source of disconnection. Don’t hesitate to seek support if you’re struggling in your relationship. Resources like couples therapy and relationship education programs can provide valuable guidance for reconnecting and thriving as a couple.

Dating apps have revolutionized how people connect and form relationships. But with this technological shift comes new challenges and considerations around sexual health, consent, and intimacy.

Meet Dr. Treena Orchard

Dr. Treena Orchard is an anthropologist, author, and activist in the School of Health Studies at Western University. She researches and engages in activist debates about sexuality, gender, and health among diverse cultural and digital communities. Deeply committed to public scholarship, she regularly writes for and is featured in leading online publications, including Cosmopolitan, Men’s Health, The National Post, and The Conversation.

About the episode

Dr. Treena emphasizes that dating apps have reshaped how people perceive and engage in relationships. These platforms are structured to encourage ongoing swiping, offering intermittent rewards that promote constant activity rather than commitment. This approach contrasts with traditional relationship values centered on choosing one partner and settling down. As a result, users may struggle to build meaningful connections, investing minimal time or energy into each interaction and often facing instability due to behaviors like ghosting.

In terms of sexual health, Dr. Treena critiques mainstream dating apps for lacking features that promote awareness and safety. Most platforms do not require or encourage sharing information such as STI status, sexual preferences, or consent practices. She suggests that incorporating user feedback could lead to more supportive environments where individuals feel safer and more informed. Nonetheless, she acknowledges societal barriers such as judgment and privacy concerns that complicate these efforts.

Beyond the digital space, Dr. Treena advocates for comprehensive, inclusive sex education from a young age. She argues that education should reflect the diversity of people’s experiences and focus not only on risks but also on consent, communication, pleasure, and emotional intelligence. Such education, she believes, would lead to healthier relationships and reduced social harm, fostering greater self-awareness and empowerment.

Dr. Treena also offers practical advice for navigating dating apps while maintaining mental and emotional well-being. She encourages users to set boundaries around app use, stay self-reflective, call out harmful behaviors, and explore alternative ways to meet people. Prioritizing mental health through strategies like mindfulness is also key to managing online dating pressures.

Looking ahead, Dr. Treena hopes for a cultural shift that normalizes open conversations about sexual health and respectful connections on dating platforms. She envisions dating apps incorporating education on consent and pleasure directly into their design and outreach. Aligning technological tools with inclusive education and personal accountability can foster a more respectful and empowering dating culture.

In conclusion

Navigating sexual health and relationships in the age of dating apps presents unique challenges but also opportunities for growth and empowerment. By fostering open conversations, promoting comprehensive education, and developing more mindful app features, one can create a dating culture that prioritizes well-being, consent, and meaningful connections.

In this episode, you will explore the complexities of relationships and discover how the Enneagram can serve as a transformative tool for enhancing understanding and communication between partners. Christa Hardin, an expert in counseling and the Enneagram, shares her insights on navigating the emotional intricacies of relationships and improving marital dynamics through this ancient personality system.

Meet Christa Hardin, MA

Christa Hardin, MA, is a renowned relationship expert and the founder of Enneagram & Marriage, a platform dedicated to helping couples enrich their relationships through the Enneagram personality framework. With over twenty years of experience in marriage counseling, Christa’s expertise lies in integrating Enneagram insights to foster deeper understanding and connection between partners.

She is the author of the best-selling book The Enneagram in Marriage: Your Guide to Thriving Together in Your Unique Pairing, which has been widely recognized for its practical approach to marital improvement. Christa also hosts the popular Enneagram & Marriage Podcast, where she delves into relationship dynamics and offers actionable advice for couples at all stages of their relationships.

About the episode

Christa Hardin explores the powerful role the Enneagram can play in strengthening marital relationships. She explains that understanding each partner’s Enneagram type allows couples to better grasp one another’s core motivations, fears, and communication styles.

This self-awareness opens the door to more compassionate and constructive interactions, reducing misinterpretations and emotional distance in the relationship.

Moreover, Christa emphasizes how the Enneagram can serve as a guide for identifying and navigating personality differences. Instead of viewing conflict as a sign of incompatibility, couples begin to see it as an opportunity for growth and mutual understanding. By acknowledging each other’s triggers and stress responses, partners are more likely to respond with patience and emotional support.

In addition, Christa shares practical stories of couples who have successfully applied Enneagram insights to improve their connection. For example, some have used this framework to shift away from blame and toward curiosity during arguments. Others have deepened their intimacy by addressing each other’s core emotional needs.

These real-life examples underscore the Enneagram’s value not only in resolving conflict but also in fostering a more intentional and empathetic partnership.

Finally, Christa addresses several misconceptions about the Enneagram, such as the belief that it puts people into rigid categories or serves as a quick fix for relationship issues. She clarifies that the tool is most effective when used as a starting point for ongoing self-reflection and open dialogue.

By demystifying the Enneagram’s purpose and application, she equips listeners with practical strategies to enhance both personal growth and relationship satisfaction.

In conclusion

Christa Hardin offers vital insights into using the Enneagram as a transformative tool for couples seeking to deepen their relationship. Key takeaways include the importance of understanding one’s own and one’s partner’s Enneagram type to navigate and improve communication and conflict resolution.

Christa also emphasizes the role of self-awareness and empathy in fostering a supportive and loving environment. Overall, listeners are equipped with practical strategies to apply Enneagram knowledge to strengthen their marital bonds and achieve greater relational harmony.

Meet Minh Trần

Minh Trần, L.M.F.T., is a psychotherapist, educator, and Ph.D. candidate in depth psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute. As a first-and-a-half generation queer Vietnamese-American and former “boat person” of the post-Vietnam War era, Minh brings a deeply personal and multicultural perspective to his work.

His clinical practice focuses on supporting LGBTQ+ individuals and families through a Jungian/archetypal psychology lens, and he maintains a dedicated caseload of monolingual Vietnamese speakers.

In addition to his psychotherapy work, Minh has pursued postgraduate education and training in psychedelic-assisted therapies and research at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Since 2020, he has been presenting his innovative “musical lectures” at national and international conferences, blending psychology, culture, and music to engage audiences in meaningful dialogue.

About the episode

Host Marie Stella and psychotherapist Minh Tran de-mystify online dating, examining the subject from the comfort of apps before diving into the real world. Minh dispels myths, proposing app dating is safer in terms of a “digital footprint” compared to getting out there and doing the same, which is less easily traced.

The conversation then shifts to the ways in which dating apps offer opportunities for connection, particularly for introverts and LGBTQ individuals who may have limited options in the real world. Marie raises ethical concerns such as ghosting and oversharing, while Minh offers advice on profile creation: “Update your bio like a resume—it should reflect who you are today, not three years ago.”

Minh then discusses the psychology of projection and how individuals idealize prospective dates even before meeting them. He compares it to “falling in love with a movie trailer rather than the actual movie.” He also points out being real but with boundaries, and he encourages users to practice “vulnerability with boundaries” rather than revealing too much.

Returning to the topic of ghosting, Minh frames it as a symptom of society’s broader discomfort with confrontation. He suggests that boundaries and vulnerability can soften its emotional bite. In the end, he advises that self-awareness—either through therapy or self-reflection—is the key to breaking unhealthy cycles of dating and approaching relationships with confidence, rather than emotional baggage.

In conclusion

Digital dating apps are not just swipe-driven games—they’re tools for meaningful connection when used thoughtfully. Safety isn’t sacrificed online; apps provide traceable interactions that traditional dating often lacks, especially for marginalized communities seeking visibility. Authentic profiles act as “honest trailers” of oneself, while ethical engagement demands clarity in intentions and empathy in communication.

From subtle hints to displays of power, this discussion offers valuable insights for both natural charmers and those who struggle with communication.
Meet Anisa Varasteh

Anisa Varasteh is a dedicated sexologist who is passionate about guiding individuals and couples on their journey toward discovering and rediscovering what is fulfilling, meaningful, and pleasurable in their lives. With a focus on relationships, identity, and sexual well-being, Anisa works with individuals in diverse relationship structures, including multi-partnered relationships, helping them connect with their authentic selves.

Fluent in both English and Persian, Anisa offers therapy in multiple languages, catering to a wide range of clients. Outside of her professional endeavors, she enjoys writing, hiking, watching extensive art-house films, and exploring new and exciting destinations around the globe.

About the episode

In this episode of Reloscope, Anisa Varasteh defines a relationship as any human connection, encompassing various types, including romantic, platonic, and professional. She asserts that the significance of romantic relationships remains intact, as they fulfill a fundamental human need and have historically held importance.

Moreover, Anisa differentiates flirting from seduction, stating that while seduction is a broader term involving nonverbal and indirect attraction, flirting is more direct and does not necessarily imply sexual intentions. She also stresses the need for both verbal and nonverbal consent, advising that comfort levels and body language must be carefully observed to ensure that consent is truly mutual and understood.

Anisa also discusses the importance of creating a safe space in relationships, emphasizing that after establishing comfort, it is crucial to provide the other person with an easy way out of potentially uncomfortable situations. She highlights that this approach can reduce defensiveness and facilitate open communication about desires and boundaries.

In conclusion

This episode outlines a 6-step process for effective seduction, delving into the psychological elements involved. It emphasizes the significance of body language and the appeal of verbal consent. It also showcases proactive methods to boost confidence before engaging in flirting.

In today’s evolving landscape of romantic partnerships, shared responsibility has taken on new meaning and importance. Gone are the days when relationships were defined by rigid gender roles or societal expectations. Instead, modern couples embrace a more balanced and collaborative approach to building their lives together.

Meet Shira Etzion, LMFT

Shira is passionate about personal growth and has a natural ability to connect deeply with her clients. She wholeheartedly believes that whatever brings a person into therapy can be a powerful catalyst, ultimately helping them create a more enriched and honest life experience for themselves and those around them.

Shira is a Certified Holistic Health Counselor through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, a Certified Coach through the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC). She is certified in Redirecting Children’s Behavior and Conscious Parenting. Additionally, she has extensive training in Mindfulness-based approaches, completing her 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training along with various alternative approaches both in and outside the coaching and therapeutic framework.

Shira holds an MA in Marriage and Family Therapy from Hofstra University, and has facilitated workshops, seminars, retreats, and individual work in a variety of settings focused on health and wellness, personal growth, meditation, mindfulness and transpersonal exploration over the last 15 years.

About the episode

According to Shira, shared responsibility in a relationship means:

Having a shared commitment to showing up with curiosity about yourself and your partner

Being open to learning about and growing with your partner over time

Taking an active role in supporting your partner’s journey and personal evolution

Bringing 100% of yourself to the relationship rather than expecting a perfect 50/50 split

Essentially, it’s about creating an environment of mutual support, growth, and understanding. Both partners take responsibility for nurturing the relationship and each other’s well-being.

One common misconception about shared responsibility is that it’s all about compromise. Shira challenges this notion, suggesting that compromise often leaves both partners feeling like they’ve given something up.

Instead, she advocates for a win-win mindset rooted in deeply understanding your partner’s needs and motivations. This allows couples to find creative solutions that feel good to both people rather than settling for an unsatisfying middle ground.

For example, if one partner is vegan and the other wants to try a new non-vegan restaurant, the solution isn’t necessarily to “compromise” by going somewhere neither wants. By communicating openly about their needs and desires, the couple might find that the vegan partner is happy to support their partner’s interest in trying the new place, knowing there will be other opportunities to enjoy vegan meals together.

In conclusion

Embracing shared responsibility in a relationship is not a one-time decision but an ongoing process of growth, learning, and mutual support. By cultivating a partnership built on true shared responsibility, couples create a foundation for lasting love, deep connection, and mutual empowerment. It’s a journey that requires work, but the rewards—a thriving relationship and two individuals reaching their full potential—are immeasurable.
