Grief is a universal human experience, yet the way an individual processes and copes with loss can vary greatly from person to person. Understanding grief and developing resilience are crucial skills for navigating life’s challenges.

Meet Ali Mills

Ali Mills, BHlthSc (Psych), MCouns, MACA, is a Registered Counsellor and Accredited Supervisor specializing in grief, loss, and bereavement. Ali has over ten years of experience working clinically, supporting individuals and teams across Queensland to care for those experiencing loss. Having worked in oncology, palliative care, family separation, aged care, with children and young people, and with those impacted by traumatic and sudden loss, Ali understands the importance of empathy, compassion, and sensitivity when dealing with difficult situations.

Ali’s experience extends beyond working with individual clients and groups to leading clinical teams, innovating health programs, and developing targeted therapeutic interventions for individuals and groups. She is a proactive leader and clinical supervisor who emphasizes best practices and team well-being.

Ali currently works as a Specialist Grief Practitioner at Grief Australia and in private practice through Grief Guide. Ali has a particular interest in supporting young people navigate grief and loss. However, she hopes to create a space where people of all ages can feel seen, heard, and valued in their experiences.

About the episode

Grief is a multifaceted emotional response that arises not only from the death of a loved one but also from a range of life changes such as relationship breakdowns, job loss, health challenges, and shifts in identity. It is a profoundly personal experience, and there is no universal or correct way to grieve. Each navigates grief according to their own emotions, circumstances, and coping mechanisms, making it essential to acknowledge the uniqueness of every grief journey.

Contrary to the popular notion of grief progressing through predictable stages, many grief experts argue that this model oversimplifies the emotional complexity of loss. Grief rarely follows a linear path; instead, it unfolds unpredictably, with individuals experiencing a range of emotions at different times. Ali emphasizes that the idea of completing stages to “resolve” grief is misleading, as grief tends to remain a persistent, evolving presence in one’s life.

Resilience in the context of grief is often misunderstood. Rather than implying strength through emotional suppression, resilience involves recognizing and working through painful feelings, employing strategies for emotional expression, and slowly adapting to life after a loss. People grieve in diverse ways, including both emotional (intuitive grieving) and action-oriented (instrumental grieving) expressions, such as journaling, storytelling, physical activity, or organizing belongings. What matters most is that coping methods are healthy and supportive of the individual’s well-being during grieving.

Supporting others through grief requires patience, empathy, and a willingness to accept their way of processing loss. Instead of trying to fix or minimize their pain, it’s more helpful to offer non-judgmental listening and practical support. Within families, grief can manifest in conflicting styles, leading to tension if differences in coping are not respected. Ali highlights the importance of open communication and understanding during such times to maintain support and unity.

Children, too, require thoughtful guidance when grieving. Honest, age-appropriate explanations help them comprehend the reality of loss without confusion. Providing emotional space, maintaining routines, and involving them in remembrance can support a child’s healing process. In some cases, professional help may be necessary to guide children or adults through complicated grief.

In conclusion

Remember that there is no timeline for grief, and it’s okay to seek help when needed. As you learn to live with your losses, you can honor your grief while also finding ways to move forward and find meaning in life after loss.

Meet Dr. Neryl East

Dr. Neryl East is a highly respected communication specialist, keynote speaker, and Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) known for helping leaders and organizations enhance credibility, influence, and trust.

With a background in television, radio, Olympic commentary, and high-level government advisory, she brings decades of practical experience to her dynamic presentations and coaching.

Dr. East works with executive teams and individuals to transform communication practices, build stronger reputations, and navigate high-pressure situations with clarity and confidence.

Her signature approach, “The East Way,” empowers leaders to align messaging with structured goals and connect authentically with their audiences.

About the episode

In this episode of Bouncing Back, Dr. Neryl East defines personal resilience as the ability to prevent internal turmoil from negatively affecting one’s external actions, especially in difficult situations.

She emphasizes that managing one’s inner state allows a person to remain calm rather than reacting impulsively. People with high resilience can address their emotions without letting them overwhelm their behavior.

Dr. Neryl explains that miscommunication often arises when individuals interpret others’ words through their own emotional lens. This is where personal resilience becomes essential.

Personal resilience helps by encouraging a step back to assess facts objectively, recognizing multiple possible interpretations rather than assuming the worst. This self-checking reduces misunderstandings and promotes more constructive interactions.

Regarding communication, Dr. Neryl highlights the importance of active listening and asking open, clarifying questions to reduce uncertainty and prevent conflict. She advises choosing to clarify rather than justify during conversations, which fosters openness and diminishes defensiveness.

She also shares a number of approaches that can transform communication and reduce miscommunication

In conclusion

In summary, Dr. Neryl East’s insights connect personal resilience with effective communication. Her approach encourages individuals to manage their internal states while engaging empathetically and thoughtfully with others. By adopting these practices, people can improve their interactions, reduce conflict, and foster more meaningful connections.

In this episode, the host Joanna sits down with Dr. Lin Hong-hui, a brilliant Clinical Psychologist who really gets the whole attachment theory and trauma-informed care thing. They discuss the complexities of relationships, especially when past hurts and traumas are involved.

Meet Dr. Lin Hong-hui

Dr. Lin Hong-hui is a Clinical Psychologist registered in Singapore and Australia, with over ten years of professional experience. She specializes in trauma-informed care, particularly through the lens of the Attachment Framework. Additionally, her practice encompasses roles as a clinician, lecturer, clinical supervisor, and consultant.

Beyond her clinical work, Dr. Lin is dedicated to making psychological concepts engaging and accessible to the community by applying them creatively. Moreover, she is an art lover who believes in the power of artistic expression to enhance understanding of mental health.

About the episode

The podcast begins by unpacking the concept of attachment styles, which are critical to understanding how people relate to others. Dr. Lin explains that these styles are not static personality traits. Instead, they are dynamic relational strategies that you activate in close relationships. Each style—secure, avoidant, anxious, and disorganized—offers a different lens for perceiving intimacy, trust, and emotional connection.

Secure Attachment: You feel worthy, trust others, and feel comfortable with intimacy.

Avoidant Attachment: You may fear closeness and prioritize self-reliance over relationships

Anxious Attachment: You might experience a strong desire for closeness and fear abandonment, often leading to heightened emotional distress

Disorganized Attachment: You may show mixed behaviors, struggling to regulate emotions and trust your own needs, often due to past trauma.

Throughout the episode, Dr. Lin focuses significantly on relational trauma—experiences that disrupt trust and safety in relationships. She emphasizes that trauma often stems from childhood experiences, such as neglect, abuse, or emotional violations.

Specifically, during the early years of life, when your nervous system is still developing, traumatic experiences can leave a profound impact on your emotional health. As a result, without the opportunity to form secure attachments, you may face challenges in adult relationships, such as anxiety, avoidance, or a mix of both.

Nevertheless, one of the most empowering messages in the podcast is the idea that it is possible to reclaim attachment security even after experiencing toxic relationships. In particular, Dr. Lin shares that understanding your attachment history is the first step toward healing.

To support this journey, she offers several practical strategies you can apply:

Practice mindfulness: Engaging in mindfulness allows you to observe your thoughts and feelings non-judgmentally. By doing so, you create a “pause button,” helping you manage automatic reactions to stress or emotional triggers.

Try soothing touch exercises: Dr. Lin recommends placing your hands on your heart, breathing deeply, and tuning into your feelings. This simple practice promotes emotional regulation and self-soothing.

Cultivate self-compassion: Developing a kind and compassionate relationship with yourself is crucial. Dr. Lin stresses that letting go of self-blame and acknowledging that healing is a journey can help you move forward with greater ease.

Build safe relationships: Surrounding yourself with safe, supportive connections plays a key role in building trust and deepening emotional resilience. Having people who walk alongside you through life’s challenges strengthens your healing process

Therefore, by applying these strategies consistently, you can rebuild healthier patterns of connection, strengthen your emotional well-being, and create more fulfilling relationships.

In conclusion

In this thought-provoking episode, Dr. Lin lays out a roadmap for reclaiming attachment security and transforming the impact of toxic relationships. She encourages you to embark on a journey of self-discovery, healing, and empowerment.

As you tune in, get ready to feel inspired by the idea that your past experiences may shape you, but they do not define you. With the right tools and support, you can reclaim your narrative and build healthier, more fulfilling relationships.

Guilt is a complex cognitive and emotional experience that arises when individuals believe they have violated their ethical codes, moral principles, or expectations. This phenomenon is highly subjective and varies based on personal values, cultural influences, and situational contexts.

Meet Dr. Sunita Rai, Psy.D., CMT-P, RC

Dr. Sunita is the founder and clinical psychologist at the Holistic Psychotherapy Centre and the founding partner of Positive Performance Consulting. She is a psychologist, psychotherapist, author, consultant, lecturer, and clinical supervisor.

She has developed two distinctive frameworks on well-being: the Integrated Wellbeing Model (IWM) and Mindfulness-Oriented Counselling and Psychotherapy (MOCP). She is currently working on her book on well-being and happiness.

About the episode

Guilt can stem from diverse sources, including actions that cause harm to others, failure to meet societal or personal expectations, survivor’s guilt, parental guilt, environmental guilt, and caregiver guilt. While guilt is essential in moral development and ethical decision-making, excessive or unresolved guilt can harm mental, physical, and social well-being.

The impact of guilt manifests on multiple levels:

Neurological. Guilt engages the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus, leading to impaired decision-making and persistent rumination.

Psychological. It can trigger sadness, diminish self-worth, and reinforce cycles of negative self-talk.

Physiological. Guilt-related stress elevates cortisol levels, disrupts digestion, and weakens immune function.

Social. Guilt can strain relationships, contribute to withdrawal or irritability, and erode self-esteem by reinforcing negative self-perception.

Consequently, understanding and addressing guilt is crucial to maintaining overall well-being and fostering emotional resilience.

Although guilt can be burdensome, it also presents opportunities for self-improvement and emotional intelligence. By self-reflection, individuals can uncover the root causes of guilt and develop a deeper understanding of their behaviors and motivations. Viewing mistakes as learning opportunities rather than personal failures fosters resilience and encourages skill development.

The process of navigating guilt and personal growth can be likened to the development of a tree. Just as a tree develops strong roots for stability, adapts to changing conditions, and draws nourishment from its surroundings, individuals can cultivate resilience through self-care, flexibility, and continuous learning.

Personal growth occurs incrementally, requiring patience, persistence, and consistent effort. By nurturing emotional well-being, fostering a positive mindset, and investing in healthy relationships, individuals can transform guilt into a constructive force for self-improvement and fulfillment.

In conclusion

Overcoming guilt is a journey that requires patience, self-compassion, and consistent effort. With these strategies and viewing guilt as an opportunity for growth, you can transform this challenging emotion into a catalyst for personal development and increased resilience. Your growth may take time, but you can flourish and become stronger with persistence and self-care.

While strong academic performance can boost self-esteem and overall well-being, mental health challenges can significantly impact a student’s ability to thrive academically.

Meet Dr. Gabrielle Wilcox

In January 2013, Dr. Wilcox moved to Alberta from Pennsylvania, where she spent most of her life. She earned a BSE in English Education and an MS in School Psychology at Millersville University. She practiced as a school psychologist for eight years, primarily serving students with intellectual disabilities or severe emotional/ behavioral problems, before completing her PsyD in School Psychology at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) in 2009.

She completed post-doctoral training in clinical neuropsychology. She practiced as a licensed psychologist in Pennsylvania, primarily working in pediatric neuropsychology, until joining the Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary.

Dr. Wilcox is a Registered Psychologist in Alberta and a Nationally Certified School Psychologist. Dr. Gabrielle’s research focuses on school-based mental health and successful transition to adulthood, especially for students with additional needs, as well as educational neuroscience.

About the episode

Academic success is often viewed differently by various individuals and institutions. However, it encompasses having the necessary academic skills to excel in one’s chosen educational path. This may include achieving good grades, mastering course material, and developing critical thinking abilities.

Mental health challenges are prevalent among academic students, often impacting their academic performance. Common concerns include anxiety, ADHD, and depression, which tend to intensify during adolescence due to increasing academic pressures and life transitions.

As awareness of mental health grows, there has been a positive shift toward reducing stigma. However, this has also blurred the distinction between typical stress and clinically significant disorders.

Developing effective coping mechanisms is vital for maintaining mental well-being while managing academic demands. Activities such as spending time in nature, exercising regularly, and socializing with supportive individuals can foster resilience.

However, students must critically assess their coping strategies, as excessive reliance on digital entertainment may not always contribute to long-term well-being.

According to Dr. Gabrielle, research indicates that adolescents spend an average of nine hours per day on electronic devices, which can interfere with deep thinking, studying, and in-person interactions.

Additionally, social media platforms often encourage unhealthy social comparisons, leading to decreased self-esteem and feelings of inadequacy that can hinder academic focus.

In conclusion

Navigating the complex relationship between academic success and mental health requires a multifaceted approach. Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Universities, schools, and communities continue to expand their support systems, recognizing the vital importance of nurturing students’ minds and mental health.

Eating disorders and body image issues are closely intertwined, often creating a vicious cycle that can be difficult to break. Dr. Reza, a clinical psychologist with over 20 years of experience treating eating disorders, body dysmorphia, anxiety, and depression, sheds light on this complex relationship and offers insights into building resilience.

Meet Dr. Reza Nejad

Dr. Reza Nejad graduated with a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Psychology. In addition, he holds a Doctorate Degree in Psychology from the University of Adelaide. Moreover, he is a certified CBT clinician and a credentialed Eating Disorder Clinician.

With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Reza has been working as a clinical psychologist in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Throughout his career, he has supported individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, complicated grief, and eating disorders.

About the episode

Individuals with eating disorders frequently experience a distorted perception of their bodies, which often leads to excessive concern about shape and weight. In particular, constant exposure to unrealistic and idealized body standards creates distorted perceptions of what is considered “normal.”. Consequently, this internalization can lead to body dissatisfaction and contribute to the progression of eating disorders.

Given these risks, recognizing the early indicators of body image issues is critical for timely intervention. Some common signs include:

Preoccupation with weight, shape, and appearance

Persistent feelings of shame and anxiety

Frequent body comparisons, often measuring themselves against unrealistic standards

Restrictive eating behaviors

Excessive exercise

Constant body checking

Negative self-talk about their appearance

Spotting the signs early can help prevent eating disorders from getting worse.

For individuals, learning about eating disorders, getting help from professionals, and avoiding body comparisons can make a big difference. Also, limiting body-checking and unfollowing unrealistic social media accounts are helpful steps.

On a broader level, it’s important to challenge false beliefs about weight, avoid labeling foods as “good” or “bad,” and question extreme diets. Showing diverse body types in the media can also shift harmful beauty standards.

Eating disorders and body image issues can seriously affect mental health. People may feel anxious, depressed, or hopeless, and these struggles can lead to isolation and relationship problems.

Getting professional help is key. Eating disorders need special care, but recovery is possible. For those unsure about seeking help, online resources can be a good first step toward healing and a better quality of life.

In conclusion

Understanding the connection between eating disorders and body image is crucial for developing effective strategies to combat these issues. In particular, fostering resilience, seeking professional help when needed, and incorporating mindfulness practices can make a meaningful difference. Through these efforts, individuals can work towards a healthier relationship with their bodies and, ultimately, achieve improved mental well-being.

Pregnancy fluctuations can significantly impact a woman’s mood, memory, and overall well-being. Understanding this relationship is key to managing mental health effectively.

Meet Assoc. Prof. Caroline Gurvich

Caroline is an Associate Professor and a clinical neuropsychologist. She is the Deputy Director of the HER Centre Australia, Monash University, and Head of the Cognition and Hormones Group. Caroline has a research interest in the neuropsychology of women’s mental health, particularly in understanding how hormones influence cognitive functioning. Caroline’s research combines neuropsychological assessments with eye movement research to characterise cognition. She is also the Chair of the Victorian College of Clinical Neuropsychologists and works as a neuropsychologist in private practice.

Caroline has over 120 publications that have ultimately contributed to a better understanding of how biological factors influence symptoms and cognition in mental health and mental illness. She is the recipient of several awards, prizes, and competitive grant funding, including NHMRC project grants, an NHMRC early career fellowship, Rebecca Cooper Foundation project grant, and institutional and philanthropic funding. She is a dedicated supervisor to PhD candidates, honours students, neuropsychology registrars, and medical student placements. Caroline has established ongoing biodatabanks to better understand the biological mechanisms underpinning symptoms across neuropsychiatric disorders.

About the episode

Estrogen and progesterone, women’s primary sex hormones, play a significant role in regulating reproductive functions while exerting profound effects on the brain. Estrogen interacts with serotonin, a neurotransmitter essential for mood regulation, and dopamine, which influences motivation. Both estrogen and progesterone affect GABA, impacting cognition and mood.

Women experience notable hormonal fluctuations throughout life, particularly during puberty, pregnancy and postpartum, and perimenopause and menopause. These hormonal changes can affect mental health and cognition in different women. A common cognitive manifestation during these transitions is “brain fog,” a term used to describe lapses in concentration, everyday forgetfulness, difficulty retrieving words, and a general sense of mental fogginess.

It is essential to differentiate perimenopausal brain fog from conditions such as dementia and ADHD. Unlike dementia, brain fog does not prevent the formation of new memories, as information remains intact but may be harder to retrieve. Hormonal changes can also exacerbate existing ADHD symptoms, although true ADHD would have been present earlier in life.

Women can take various steps to build resilience and manage the symptoms associated with hormonal fluctuations:

Regular physical activity. It benefits brain and mental health, while adhering to a Mediterranean-style diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains, supports cognitive function.

Stress management practices. Meditation, mindfulness, and yoga help reduce stress and improve mental clarity.

Maintaining strong social connections. It fosters cognitive resilience, while engaging in mentally stimulating activities strengthens cognitive reserve.

For those experiencing persistent symptoms, seeking support from healthcare providers knowledgeable about hormone-related issues can provide medical guidance. Connecting with peers experiencing similar challenges through support groups or online communities offers valuable emotional support. Additionally, working with therapists or coaches specializing in women’s health can provide targeted strategies to manage symptoms effectively.

In conclusion

Understanding the intricate relationship between hormones, mental health, and cognition is essential for women’s well-being. With the proper knowledge and tools, women can thrive throughout all stages of life, embracing the changes that come with each phase while maintaining optimal mental and cognitive health.

This episode dives deep into the complexities of parenting with one of Australia’s most respected voices on family well-being, Dr. Justin Coulson. Whether you’re a seasoned parent or just starting out, this episode will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact, inspiring you to cultivate a more resilient, connected, and compassionate family dynamic.

Meet Dr. Justin Coulson

He is a prominent Australian parenting expert and co-host of Channel Nine’s “Parental Guidance.” He is the founder of happyfamilies.com.au and holds a PhD in Psychology from the University of Wollongong. Over the past decade, he has authored nine books on parenting, made numerous media appearances, and produced viral content that has garnered millions of views.

Dr. Justin also known for his work as a keynote speaker, focusing on enhancing well-being and relationships in various settings, including organizations and schools.

About the episode

At the heart of the episode is Dr. Justin’s refreshingly candid account of his own growth as a parent. He shares the humbling early days of struggling to find his footing, and how that propelled him to pursue higher education and become a leading voice on family well-being.

Additionally, he challenges the simplistic notion of “bouncing back,” and instead introduces the concept of “antifragility” — the idea that individuals can actually emerge stronger from adversity. This shift in mindset is particularly powerful for parents navigating their own challenges while teaching their children to adapt and thrive.

He emphasizes the inevitability of mistakes in parenting and urges listeners to focus less on perfection and more on fostering a growth mindset. This empathetic outlook is a refreshing counterpoint to the often unrealistic societal pressures placed on parents.

In this insightful episode, Dr. Justin shares 3 essential elements for family success:

Sleep. Acknowledging that adequate rest is crucial for parents to function effectively. Lack of sleep can lead to irritability and poor parenting decisions.

Having regular family meetings. Dr. Justin recommends establishing a rhythm of quarterly couple retreats and weekly family check-ins. These structured gatherings allow parents to align on goals, address challenges, and plan for the future.

Rituals of connection. Dr. Justin’s concept of “rituals of connection” is a powerful tool for nurturing resilient families. These simple, consistent activities — such as shared meals, family meetings, or moments of quality time — help ensure that every family member feels seen, heard, and valued.

Dr. Justin’s personal philosophy revolves around the belief in the potential for happy families through structured approaches and consistent habits. He advocates for the importance of face-to-face interactions over excessive screen time, and suggests combining traditional wisdom with modern scientific insights to create thriving family dynamics.

In conclusion

This episode is a must-listen for any parent, caregiver, or individual interested in personal growth. With Dr. Justin’s dynamic personality, vast knowledge, and genuine passion for enriching family life, this episode is sure to be a transformative experience for all who tune in.

Despite this, many individuals struggle with financial resilience, underscoring the importance of learning money management, building a safety net, and seeking support when needed

Meet Prof. Roslyn Russell

Professor Roslyn Russell is a leading researcher in financial well-being and literacy, with over 20 years of experience in the field. She is a Research Professor at RMIT University, where her work focuses on financial capabilities and resilience.

Prof. Roslyn collaborates closely with the Australian Government and other institutions to create policies and programs that promote financial literacy, especially for women. Her research is dedicated to fostering financial empowerment and addressing critical issues such as financial abuse and vulnerability.

About the episode

In this episode of Work in Progress, Prof. Roslyn highlights the critical role of financial well-being and its deep connection to various aspects of life, including health, happiness, and overall resilience. She stresses the importance of financial literacy and encourages individuals to build financial resilience through proactive planning and education.

Moreover, Prof. Roslyn underscores the urgent need for widespread financial literacy education, particularly for younger generations. She advocates for making educational programs on financial literacy accessible in schools and workplaces, ensuring that everyone, regardless of background, has the knowledge to manage their finances responsibly.

Prof. Roslyn also addresses the laissez-faire attitude many people adopt toward money, often rooted in upbringing or a lack of formal financial education. Ignoring personal finances can jeopardize financial stability, making it essential to change these attitudes in order to secure a resilient financial future.

Additionally, she draws attention to the issue of financial abuse, particularly its impact on women. Financial control, a form of abuse often overlooked, is closely linked to broader societal issues such as gender inequality and domestic violence.

To improve financial well-being and resilience, Prof. Russell suggests these following steps:

Improve Financial Literacy: Introduce financial literacy education at schools and workplaces to empower individuals with essential financial management skills.

Build a Financial Safety Net: Start saving to create an emergency fund that covers three to six months of living expenses.

Seek Financial Help: Consult financial counselors or advisors to help manage debt, plan savings, and reduce financial stress.

Normalize Money Conversations: Encourage open dialogue about finances with friends and family to reduce stigma and gain support.

By following these strategies, individuals can strengthen their financial resilience, reduce stress, and set themselves up for a more secure future.

In conclusion

Financial well-being plays a crucial role in reducing stress and achieving long-term stability. By building financial resilience through savings, budgeting, and education, individuals can navigate challenges more effectively. Seeking support and normalizing conversations about money can alleviate financial pressures. With the right tools and mindset, anyone can enhance their financial security and overall quality of life.
