Many people see ADHD as a condition that affects only the individual, but that’s rarely the case, especially for children. This episode explores how a parent’s involvement can make or break the success of ADHD treatment, providing practical guidance for families navigating the journey.

Meet Elaine Taylor-Klaus, MCC, CPCC

Elaine Taylor-Klaus is a Master Certified Coach and co-founder of ImpactParents.com, an organization that provides coaching and training for parents of children with ADHD and other complex issues. She’s also the author of Parenting ADHD Now! and The Essential Guide to Raising Complex Kids with ADHD, Anxiety, and More. Through her work and her experience as a mother of three neurodiverse young adults, Elaine has become a leading advocate for neurodiversity inclusion and strength-based parenting.

About the episode

The conversation explores the concept of multimodal ADHD treatment and why medication alone is rarely sufficient. Elaine emphasizes that parent training is a critical and often overlooked component of successful interventions. She outlines the developmental stages of recommended treatments, from behavioral therapy in early childhood to collaborative management during adolescence.

Elaine breaks down common misconceptions, including the stigma surrounding ADHD and the impact of shame on children’s development. She discusses the risks of over-control by caregivers and how shifting from a directive to a collaborative parenting style can empower children to manage their conditions more effectively. Practical tools, such as asking open-ended questions and modeling help-seeking behavior, are also introduced to support daily life with neurodivergent children.

Elaine’s insights extend beyond treatment strategies. She challenges the traditional understanding of “family,” advocates for neurodiversity inclusion, and urges parents to adopt strength-based, curiosity-driven approaches. Her message is clear: when parents are supported and educated, the entire family thrives.

In conclusion

Parental involvement is not just helpful in managing ADHD, it’s essential. Medication may offer symptom relief, but without understanding, guidance, and connection, the underlying challenges remain. By shifting their roles from directors to collaborators, parents can create an environment where neurodiverse children feel empowered, understood, and capable. And through trust, communication, and a willingness to grow, families can truly redefine what success looks like.

The conversation explores how stress impacts family relationships and offers strategies for recognizing early signs of mental health issues.

Meet Jennifer Gerlach

Jennifer Gerlach is a therapist, speaker, and writer based in the St. Louis area. She specializes in mental health and neurodiversity, focusing on helping individuals navigate their mental health challenges.

Jennifer is also the author of The Psychosis and Mental Health Recovery Workbook: Tools for Young Adults from ACT, DBT, and Recovery-Oriented CBT.

Her work emphasizes a hope-filled perspective for families dealing with mental health issues, and she advocates for understanding and acceptance of neurodiversity. Through her experiences and expertise, she aims to empower others on their journey of recovery and self-discovery.

About the episode

The conversation begins by acknowledging families’ vital role as support systems. Caregiving, especially for loved ones facing mental health challenges, can strain even the strongest bonds.

Jennifer shares poignant anecdotes that illustrate the emotional toll of witnessing a loved one struggle. She argues that caregiving is not just about providing physical support; it’s also about emotional resilience and understanding.

Jennifer opens up about her personal journey as a neurodivergent individual. She discusses how, around the age of 13, she encountered significant mental health challenges that shaped her perspective. This experience motivated her to become a therapist who aims to help others navigate similar paths.

A crucial part of the episode focuses on identifying early signs of mental health conditions within family members. Jennifer explains that while stress reactions like anxiety and irritability are typical, persistent changes—such as hallucinations or drastic mood swings—can indicate deeper issues.

One of Jennifer’s key messages is the power of open communication within families. She advocates for involving all family members in discussions about mental health, rather than talking about someone in their absence.

This inclusion helps prevent misunderstandings and builds trust. Jennifer suggests that families create a safe space for dialogue and allow everyone to express their feelings and concerns without fear of judgment.

Jennifer also mentions the critical need for caregivers to prioritize their own mental health. Throughout the episode, she shares practical self-care strategies, such as taking time for relaxation, pursuing hobbies, and seeking support from friends or professionals.

A recurring theme in Jennifer’s conversation is hope. She reassures listeners that recovery from mental health challenges is indeed possible. Drawing from her own experiences, she illustrates that while the journey may be nonlinear—filled with ups and downs—healing can be achieved with the right support and resources.

In conclusion

This episode is a rich resource for anyone navigating the complexities of family dynamics in the context of mental health. Whether you’re a caregiver, a family member, or someone interested in mental health, this conversation offers valuable lessons on compassion, resilience, and the power of community.

Donor conception has become an increasingly common path to parenthood, but it comes with a unique set of ethical considerations and family dynamics. Wendy Kramer, co-founder and director of the Donor Sibling Registry, provides insight into this complex topic.

Meet Wendy Kramer

Wendy is the co-founder and director of the Donor Sibling Registry (DSR). The DSR was founded in 2000 with her donor-conceived son Ryan to assist individuals conceived through sperm, egg, or embryo donation who are seeking to make mutually desired contact with others with whom they share genetic ties.

With more than 93,000 members in 105 countries, the DSR has helped connect more than 26,250 of them with their half-siblings and/or biological parents. Wendy has listened to, advised/consulted, and researched thousands of these parents, donors, donor-conceived people, and other donor family members in the US, Canada, Europe, and Argentina.

Wendy has contributed to several significant books on donor conception. She co-authored Counseling Donor Family Members: A Guide for Mental Health Professionals and has also co-written a number of other influential works, including Finding Our Families: A First-of-Its-Kind Book for Donor-Conceived People and Their Families, Your Family: A Donor Kid’s Story, Donor Family Matters: My Story of Raising a Profoundly Gifted Donor-Conceived Child, Redefining Family, and Building the Donor Sibling Registry.

Moreover, Wendy has conducted and presented numerous research studies focused on all members of donor families. She has co-authored dozens of peer-reviewed papers published in respected journals, including Social Science & Medicine, Human Reproduction, Reproductive BioMedicine & Society, Facts, Views & Vision in OB/GYN, Reproductive BioMedicine Online, Advances in Reproductive Sciences, Contemporary Perspectives in Family Research, Fertility and Sterility, The Journal of Family Issues, Children & Society, and The Journal of Law and the Biosciences, among others.

About the episode

A key challenge identified by Wendy is the ethical shortcomings within the reproductive medicine industry. She outlines several systemic issues, including the dissemination of inaccurate information regarding donor limits and medical updates, the absence of mandatory record-keeping for human donor conception, and the prioritization of profit over the welfare of donor-conceived individuals.

Furthermore, despite the reality that DNA testing has made anonymity obsolete, many clinics promote anonymous donation practices.

Wendy advocates for prioritizing the rights and needs of donor-conceived individuals, which have historically been overshadowed by the industry’s interests, parents, and donors. She stresses the importance of access to one’s genetic background, ancestral knowledge, family medical history, and the ability to connect with biological relatives.

Central to her message is the practice of early disclosure. Wendy recommends that children be informed about their donor conception early in life, integrating this knowledge into their identity naturally and openly, free from secrecy or shame. Her son, Ryan, benefited from this approach and developed a confident sense of self.

The family dynamics surrounding donor conception have evolved considerably, with more than half of donor sperm users now being single mothers by choice, and a significant portion being LGBTQ+ families. Wendy also notes that egg donor families face unique challenges with disclosure. These shifting demographics influence how families communicate about donor origins and engage with genetic relatives.

To support ethical donor conception practices, Wendy emphasizes the necessity of comprehensive education and counseling for both donors and intended parents. Donors should understand the motivations of donor-conceived individuals seeking connection, while non-biological parents must be prepared for emotional complexities, including potential insecurities or fears.

A fundamental theme in Wendy’s work is the redefinition of family. She encourages donor family members to move beyond conventional notions of kinship and to develop empathy for other perspectives within the donor network.

Since new genetic connections may arise over time, she highlights that donor families are never truly complete. This ongoing nature requires a flexible, open-minded approach that embraces new family members and supports those beginning to understand their donor-conceived identity.

In conclusion

Donor conception presents unique challenges and opportunities for families, donors, and donor-conceived individuals. Organizations like the Donor Sibling Registry are crucial in providing resources, support, and connections for those navigating this complex landscape.

Intimacy and connection are vital components of a strong, healthy marriage. While communication and emotional bonding are crucial, the physical aspect of a relationship also plays a significant role.

Meet Chelom E. Leavitt, J.D., Ph.D.

Chelom Leavitt received her PhD from Penn State and now teaches at Brigham Young University in the School of Family Life. Her research focuses on sexual function and pleasure, and particularly how mindfulness during sexual interactions may benefit the individual and the couple. Chelom is also interested in how women experience the sexual relationship and how they add to the sexual experience.

About the episode

Sexual mindfulness involves bringing awareness and non-judgmental attention to sexual experiences. It means being fully present during intimate moments, tuning into physical sensations and emotional connections without getting caught up in distracting thoughts or anxieties.

Chelom explains: “Being mindful is typically defined as being aware in the present moment and not being judgmental, instead being curious—why am I feeling the way I’m feeling, what am I feeling? When we’re talking about sexual mindfulness, we’re taking those same sorts of qualities and applying them to sex.”

This practice can help reduce anxiety and self-consciousness that often arise during sex. Instead of getting caught up in performance worries or body image concerns, sexual mindfulness encourages partners to focus on the sensations and connection of the present moment.

While sex serves an obvious biological function for reproduction, its importance in marriage goes far beyond that. Chelom notes that sex is “a mechanism for a couple to strengthen their relationship.”

She explains that during sexual arousal, the body releases oxytocin – often called the “cuddle hormone” or “attachment hormone.” This flood of oxytocin creates feelings of bonding, belonging, and connection between partners.

This powerful bonding effect can help couples overcome daily stresses, conflicts, and disconnection. Sex provides an opportunity to reconnect physically and emotionally, even after difficult days or periods of distance in the relationship.

In conclusion

Cultivating sexual mindfulness offers couples a powerful tool for enhancing intimacy, strengthening their bond, and creating more fulfilling sexual experiences. The benefits of this practice extend beyond the bedroom, positively impacting overall relationship satisfaction and family dynamics. While it requires patience and practice, even small steps toward more mindful intimacy can yield significant rewards for couples.

This episode explores the often-overlooked challenges survivors face when rebuilding their lives after domestic violence. Krystal McLeod sheds light on these challenges while introducing alternative approaches that empower survivors on their healing journey.

Meet Krystal McLeod, J.D

Krystal McLeod, J.D., is the Executive Director of the NYU Center on Violence and Recovery, where she advocates for using restorative justice to address the root causes of domestic violence. With a law and social justice background, Crystal’s work focuses on providing survivors with alternatives to the punitive legal system, allowing them to define their own paths to healing.

About the episode

In this episode, Krystal discusses restorative justice as a compassionate alternative to the traditional punitive system. She highlights how this approach empowers survivors by allowing them to define their paths to healing and accountability. She emphasizes that survivor-centered solutions address the emotional and psychological challenges that conventional systems often overlook.

Krystal explores the impact of trauma on a survivor’s identity and sense of safety, stressing that recovery is a nonlinear, lifelong journey. She explains how creating personalized safety plans and restoring a sense of control are essential steps in the healing process.

Survivors need autonomy in making decisions about their recovery, contributing to rebuilding their self-worth and confidence.

The episode highlights the importance of community support in the recovery journey, introducing “Circles of Peace,” a restorative practice that fosters accountability and healing. These circles create safe spaces for survivors to rebuild trust and strengthen their support networks.

This approach ensures survivors are not isolated and surrounded by people who genuinely care about their well-being.

Krystal also explains how restorative justice breaks cycles of violence by encouraging those who cause harm to take responsibility. By fostering accountability and understanding, this approach addresses the root causes of damage and promotes lasting transformation.

Survivors are given the space to determine what accountability means to them, ensuring their needs remain at the center of the process.

In conclusion

Crystal McLeod brings extensive expertise in restorative justice and survivor advocacy, offering listeners a deeper understanding of alternative approaches to healing. The episode provides practical insights into rebuilding life after domestic violence while emphasizing the importance of survivor autonomy. It highlights the need for strong support networks and accountability to create safer, healthier communities.

Host Dina Sargeant and sociologist Prof. Deborah Carr navigates the emotional complexities of widowhood in this episode of All Together. The conversation begins with Prof. Deborah’s research on “death blame,” the guilt or resentment that arises when a loved one’s lifestyle choices contribute to their passing. She connects this to her own caregiving experiences, emphasizing that grief often begins long before death.

The discussion then shifts to changing family dynamics, where Prof. Deborah advocates for “chosen families” as essential sources of support. She challenges the notion that only blood relatives provide love and stability, noting that close friends and neighbors can become emotional anchors in times of loss.

Prof. Deborah also highlights gender differences in coping—men often struggle to form new social connections, whereas women tend to rely on existing support networks. She encourages a proactive approach when offering comfort to those grieving, advising, “Bring a meal; don’t just say, ‘Call if you need anything.’” Despite the weight of loss, she underscores the power of community resilience, reminding listeners, “Grief isn’t a solo journey—it’s a chorus of voices holding each other up.”

In conclusion

Widowhood’s emotional landscape is fraught with guilt, anger, and societal stigma, but inclusive support systems can ease the burden. Redefining “family” to include chosen bonds, offering concrete help (like meal deliveries), and acknowledging gendered grief patterns are critical steps. Older adults often rebuild social ties post-loss, yet climate change magnifies their vulnerability, demanding urgent community action. Prof. Deborah’s message is clear: grief isn’t linear or uniform, but compassion—for others and oneself—can transform isolation into collective strength.

Compromise is an essential component of any successful marriage, but it’s often misunderstood and can be challenging to implement effectively. In this article, you’ll explore expert insights on mastering the art of compromise in marriage, with a focus on improving communication and strengthening relationships.

Meet Duygu Balan, LPCC, LMHC

Duygu Balan, LPCC is a licensed psychotherapist specializing in familial and intergenerational trauma, and attachment wounding. She is a PACT (Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy) Level II trained couples therapist, and a certified clinical trauma professional.

Duygu is the first author for “Re-Write: A Trauma Workbook of Creative Writing and Recovery in Our New Normal”. She is a regular contributor at Psychology Today, and has been featured on CNN, The Washington Times, MSN, Cooper, Mentally Stronger Podcast, Medium, Warm 106.9, The Good Men Project, Attachment Theory Podcast, Authority Magazine, J & Courtney’s In it Together Podcast, and When Women Inspire.

Duygu incorporates existential, relational, and humanistic theories and utilizes mindfulness and somatic techniques. She draws from her multicultural upbringing and embodies teachings from her background in dance, yoga, and writing. She believes in the healing power of humor, creativity, and authentic human connection.

About the episode

Compromise is often viewed negatively, as it is associated with settling for less or giving up something important. However, licensed psychotherapist Dugyu Balan offers a more positive perspective:

“I usually go with something along the lines of mutual negotiation or conscious sacrifice because I feel like it’s really important to have the sense of willingness. Compromise sometimes may feel for people like it’s this unwilling having to give up things.“

Instead of viewing compromise as a loss, it’s helpful to reframe it as a mutual agreement that benefits the relationship as a whole. The key is for both partners to feel that the agreement is worthwhile and that any sacrifices made are balanced by the overall gains for the relationship.

While every couple is unique, some common challenges arise when trying to reach compromises:

Differing communication styles

Unequal willingness to compromise

Emotional reactions to sacrifices

External pressures and expectations

Underlying relationship issues

Sometimes, couples may benefit from seeking outside support to facilitate compromise and improve communication. Couples therapy can be particularly helpful in this regard. A therapist can provide tools and strategies for effective communication, help identify underlying issues, and offer an impartial perspective on conflicts.

Ultimately, successful compromise in marriage comes down to intention. Both partners must feel that they are working towards a shared goal and that their needs are being considered. When both partners approach compromises to strengthen the relationship and support each other’s well-being, it becomes a powerful tool for building a lasting, fulfilling marriage.

In conclusion

Mastering compromise in marriage is an ongoing process that requires patience, understanding, and consistent effort from both partners. By focusing on effective communication, acknowledging emotions, and maintaining a willingness to work together, couples can navigate disagreements and build stronger, more resilient relationships.

Remember that every relationship is unique, and what works for one couple may not work for another. The key is to find approaches that resonate with your specific situation and values.
