Composting is a natural process that transforms organic waste into nutrient-rich soil. Composting correctly reduces waste, enriches the soil, and contributes to a more sustainable environment. However, like any natural process, composting can face its fair share of challenges.

This article will explore common composting issues and provide practical solutions to ensure successful results. Whether you are a seasoned composter or just starting, these troubleshooting tips will help you overcome hurdles and achieve a thriving compost pile.

Compost pile not heating up

Composting relies on the activity of microorganisms that thrive in warm conditions. The compost pile must reach and maintain a specific temperature to achieve optimal composting. Warm environments are needed for microorganisms to break down organic matter quickly and safely.

Possible reasons for a cold compost pile

If your compost pile is not heating up, it might be due to a couple of reasons:

Lack of nitrogen-rich materials, often referred to as “greens.”

Improper aeration and lack of turning could result in a cold compost pile. Improper aeration restricts the flow of oxygen necessary for microbial activity.

Small compost pile size; a small compost pile might not generate enough heat to sustain high temperatures.

Solutions to increase the compost pile’s temperature

How do you increase the temperature of a compost pile? Below, you’ll find a range of solutions to achieve this:

Add more nitrogen-rich materials such as kitchen scraps, fresh garden waste, and coffee grounds.

Regularly turn the compost pile to improve aeration and mix the materials. Doing so helps increase microbial activity and promotes higher temperatures.

Consider expanding the compost pile’s size, as larger piles tend to retain heat better.

Foul odors

If you notice a foul smell from your compost bin, it is a sign that something is not quite right in the decomposition process. Foul odors in the compost bin usually indicate an imbalance in the composting process. There are two possible types of odor from the composting process:

Ammonia. If you notice a strong ammonia odor, this is a sign that your pile contains too much nitrogen. This is most likely due to the overuse of green materials.

Rotten eggs. If your compost smells like rotten eggs, your pile has become anaerobic and requires some oxygen.

Tips to prevent and address compost bin odor

Maintaining an odor-free compost bin is key to a harmonious composting experience. Here are some practical tips to help you prevent and address unpleasant odors:

Meat and fatty food wastes should be avoided as much as possible since they are the primary sources of foul odor.

Cover kitchen scraps with a layer of browns (e.g., dry leaves or shredded paper) to help prevent odors from escaping.

If you are composting in an enclosed bin, ensure proper ventilation to allow for air circulation.

Turn the compost pile regularly to promote aeration and prevent anaerobic conditions that lead to bad odors.

Slow decomposition

If your compost pile is experiencing an unusually slow breakdown, it could be attributed to a few factors, including an excess of carbon-rich materials, oversized composting materials, or inadequate moisture levels.

Techniques to accelerate the composting process

To expedite the breakdown process, consider employing these methods:

Chop or shred larger organic materials to increase their surface area, making it easier for microbes to break them down.

Maintain a balanced compost pile by combining greens and browns in the correct proportions.

Ensure the compost pile remains consistently moist but not waterlogged, as excessive dryness or wetness can slow decomposition.

Patience and expectations for compost maturity

Remember, nature operates on its own timeline, and your efforts will yield rich rewards over time. So, keep the following points in mind:

Timely transformation: Understand that composting takes time, and the process can vary depending on factors such as weather, compost pile size, and the types of materials used.

Assessing maturity: Evaluate compost maturity by observing its texture—fully composted material should have a dark, crumbly, earthy appearance.

Unfinished compost: If the compost is not fully matured, use it as mulch or incorporate it back into the pile to continue the decomposition process.

Pest problems

Pests may invade your compost pile, causing disturbances and potential health hazards. Common pests such as flies and rodents may be attracted to meat, fish, fats, or cooking and salad oils. Natural ways to control pests without harmful chemicals include:

Opting for a sealed composting system, such as a tumbler or a compost bin with a tight-fitting lid, to prevent pests from accessing the organic matter.

Avoiding putting meat and dairy as these food items might attract pes. Stick to vegetable scraps and plant-based materials.

When adding kitchen waste to the pile, bury it beneath a layer of existing compost to deter pests.

Compost too wet or too dry

Composting requires the proper moisture balance (40-60%) in the compost pile to effectively decompose organic material. Too much moisture can make the compost soggy and wet, creating a slimy, smelly, anaerobic environment.

At the same time, insufficient humidity can cause the compost to dry and slow down the decomposition. Moisture levels of compost can be adjusted for optimal decomposition through the following steps:

If the compost is too wet: mix in dry leaves, straw, or sawdust to absorb excess moisture and reestablish the right moisture balance. You can also turn the compost to increase evaporation.

If the compost is too dry: add nitrogen-rich material, such as kitchen scraps and fresh grass clippings, to introduce moisture as they break down. You can also use a lid to decrease the evaporation process.

In conclusion

By troubleshooting these common composting issues and applying the suggested solutions, you can ensure a smooth and successful composting process. Composting not only reduces waste sent to landfills but also provides a valuable resource to enrich your garden soil, supporting a more sustainable and eco-friendly way of living.

One-pot cooking has emerged as a game changer in easing kitchen cleaning while allowing you to prepare delicious dishes. This method involves preparing an entire meal using a single cooking vessel, such as a pot, skillet, casserole dish, or slow cooker.

The aim with one-pot cooking is to combine ingredients with similar cooking times and techniques to streamline the cooking process by minimizing the need for multiple pans and pots. One-pot cooking saves you time and energy and reduces water usage.

Furthermore, when various ingredients cook together in one pot, their flavors meld, creating a depth and complexity that can elevate even the simplest dishes to gourmet levels. This article will look at mastering one-pot cooking, its benefits, techniques, and some delectable dishes to start your culinary journey.

Different one-pot cooking methods

One-pot cooking encompasses an array of methods, each contributing to simplified cleanup due to less equipment being used. Here are the following:

Stovetop: Cooking on the stovetop involves combining ingredients in a pot or skillet, and this method is ideal for soups, stews, risottos, and sautés.

Oven: Oven-baked one-pot dishes, often prepared in a casserole or Dutch oven, resulting in savory creations like braised meats, gratins, and baked pasta.

Slow cooker: A slow cooker is an electric appliance that cooks food at a low temperature for an extended time. Slow cookers are excellent for breaking down and tenderizing meat, such as pot roasts or beef stews, due to their low-and-slow cooking process.

Instant Pot: The Instant Pot revolutionized one-pot cooking with its multifunctionality, pressure cooking, and time-saving features. From chili to curries, it does it all.

Each one-pot cooking method contributes to a hassle-free cleanup in its own way. Whether using the stovetop, oven, slow cooker, or Instant Pot, you’ll be using just one primary cooking vessel. This translates to fewer items to wash, rinse, and dry, streamlining your post-cooking routine and leaving you more time to enjoy your meal.

Distinctions between one-pot cooking and traditional methods

One-pot and traditional cooking methods represent two distinct approaches, each with its characteristics and benefits. Let’s explore the key differences:

Number of cooking vessels

As the name suggests, one-pot cooking involves preparing an entire meal using just one cooking vessel. Whether it’s a pot, skillet, casserole dish, or slow cooker, all the ingredients are combined and cooked.

On the other hand, traditional cooking often requires multiple pots, pans, and utensils to prepare various meal components. Different ingredients are cooked separately and then combined, leading to a higher number of dishes to wash.

Efficiency and time-saving

One-pot methods, such as slow cookers or sheet pan meals, are designed for efficiency. They often involve minimal preparation, set-it-and-forget-it cooking, and reduced hands-on time.

Traditional cooking may involve more steps, multiple cooking times, and constant attention, making it potentially more time-consuming, especially for complex recipes.

Versatility and adaptability

While one-pot cooking encourages combining ingredients, it still offers versatility. Dishes can range from soups and stews to casseroles and stir-fries, catering to various cuisines and dietary preferences.

Traditional cooking methods provide precise control over individual components, allowing for complex dishes with specific textures and flavors. However, adapting recipes to fit different ways may require adjustments.

Mastering one-pot cooking: tips and techniques

Here are some of the tips and techniques for you to master one-pot cooking. Whether you’re a novice in the kitchen or a seasoned cook, these guidelines will empower you to create flavorful and convenient dishes with minimal hassle:

Choose wisely: Select a cooking vessel that comfortably accommodates your ingredients and has a tight-fitting lid to trap steam and flavors for even cooking.

Proceed to season the chicken and introduce it to the pan, subsequently reducing the heat to medium-high.

Cook the chicken for approximately 3-5 minutes on each side, ensuring it is adequately cooked through. Once done, transfer the chicken to a plate and cover it with foil to preserve its warmth.

Step 2:

Following this, place the garlic into the pan and sauté it while stirring for about 1 minute until its aroma becomes pronounced but be mindful not to burn the garlic as it will make it bitter. Add the tomatoes, ensuring they are evenly coated. Pour in the wine and allow it to cook for approximately 1 minute until a reduction is achieved (you can skip this step).

Following this, add the cream and stock to the pan. Reintroduce the chicken into the pan and allow it to simmer for around 5 minutes, allowing the liquid to reduce. Proceed to stir in the spinach until it wilts, then season the dish with salt and pepper and garnish it with torn fresh basil leaves. You can either serve it with pasta, bread, or rice to make it a complete meal.

One-Pot Mac and Cheese

This creamy one-pot mac and cheese is easy to make, you just need to mix all the ingredients, and it is ready to serve.

Ingredients:

630 ml whole milk

150 g elbow macaroni

50 g butter

80 g cheddar cheese

30 g Parmesan cheese

½ tsp garlic powder

½ tsp Dijon mustard

Parsley for garnish

Salt and pepper to taste

Procedure:

On medium-high heat, gently warm the milk in a sizable pot until it simmers. Introduce the elbow macaroni and cook until the pasta reaches tenderness (al dente). Once the noodles are done, turn off the heat and incorporate the butter, cheese, mustard, salt, and pepper. Gently mix them with the pasta until the cheese and butter meld into the milk, resulting in a creamy, thick sauce (emulsified). Finish by sprinkling parsley and serving the dish.

With dishes like One-Pot Creamy Chicken and One-Pot Mac and Cheese, you’ll create flavorful masterpieces without creating a mountain of dirty cookware. The simplicity of one-pot cooking extends to cleanup, allowing you to savor the delicious results without dreading the aftermath.

In conclusion

Cooking can be a time-consuming task, especially when it comes to the daunting cleanup process. However, there is a solution that can simplify the process and also enhance the taste of your dishes.

One-pot cooking allows you to create mouthwatering meals with minimal dishes to clean up afterward. By adapting traditional recipes, you can create a variety of dishes that are not only delicious but visually appealing.

To ensure the best results, there are some crucial tips to remember when preparing your meals. By adopting one-pot cooking techniques, you’ll spend less time at the sink and more time relishing your culinary achievements.

The gluten-free diet has gained worthwhile attention and popularity in recent years. It’s essential to understand the gluten-free diet, whether you’re following it because of a medical condition like celiac disease, gluten sensitivity, or for general health purposes.

This article is a comprehensive guide that covers everything you need to know about the diet, including its definition, foods to avoid, alternatives and substitutes, health benefits, and tips for getting started and overcoming challenges.

Understanding the gluten-free diet

If you have celiac disease, gluten sensitivity, or wish to eliminate gluten from your diet, it’s crucial to understand the principles of a gluten-free diet. This involves avoiding foods containing gluten and recognizing hidden sources of gluten to maintain a safe and healthy lifestyle.

What is a gluten-free diet?

A gluten-free diet excludes foods containing gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and derivatives. This diet was created primarily for people with celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder caused by gluten consumption, or gluten sensitivity, a non-celiac condition with similar symptoms.

Foods to avoid on a gluten-free diet

Gluten is not intrinsically harmful, but persons with specific medical disorders, such as celiac disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity, or wheat allergy, should avoid it. You should steer clear of the following foods if you follow a gluten-free diet:

Gluten-containing grains include wheat, barley, spelt, couscous, and farro;

Bread, wraps, and crackers mostly contain gluten, such as sourdough bread, bagels, tortillas, and white bread;

Certain condiments include gravy mixes, salad dressings, and barbecue sauces;

Wheat-based pasta; and

Many processed meals and other common things may contain gluten, such as meat substitutes, processed cheeses, and certain ice creams.

It should be noted that while oats are inherently gluten-free, they may get contaminated with gluten during processing. Thus, it is essential to read the ingredient list to ensure that your product does not contain gluten.

Gluten-free alternatives and substitutes

Gluten does not have to be present in your diet and may be substituted with other foods. However, some people believe that becoming gluten-free implies avoiding carbs, but this is not the case. Many carbohydrate-containing foods, such as rice, potatoes, and beans, are gluten-free.

Furthermore, fruits, vegetables, meats, poultry, fish, beans, lentils, buckwheat, cornstarch, potatoes, sorghum, quinoa, and most dairy products are inherently gluten-free. Purchase gluten-free grains, flours, labeled gluten-free starches, and preferably, verified gluten-free by a third party whenever possible.

Health benefits and considerations

A gluten-free diet is crucial for individuals diagnosed with celiac disease, and it is also adopted by some individuals for its potential health advantages. The benefits of adhering to a gluten-free diet encompass improvements in overall health, potential weight reduction, and heightened energy levels.

However, these claims for individuals with non-celiac diseases need further research.

Managing celiac disease and gluten sensitivity

Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory illness of the small intestine induced by gluten consumption. The illness causes horrible constriction of the intestinal mucosa, which prevents nutritional absorption, and its most typical symptoms are diarrhea, anemia, weariness, and growth retardation.

Individuals with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity must follow a gluten-free diet to manage symptoms, promote intestinal repair, and avoid long-term problems.

Non-celiac gluten sensitivity and irritable bowel syndrome

Non-celiac gluten sensitivity, characterized by gluten intolerance in the absence of celiac disease, frequently coexists with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Following a gluten-free diet has shown promise in controlling IBS symptoms, with many people seeing relief from stomach discomfort, bloating, and irregular bowel movements.

Weight loss and other potential benefits

Contrary to popular belief, a gluten-free diet does not automatically result in weight reduction. Individuals may, however, unintentionally lower their overall calorie intake by removing processed gluten-containing foods, resulting in weight loss.

Other potential advantages include increased food absorption, increased energy levels, and improved overall gut health.

Getting started on a gluten-free diet

When starting a gluten-free diet, it is important to get advice from a healthcare practitioner or a nutritionist. They can offer reliable information, assist in developing customized food plans, and address specific needs.

A well-balanced and enjoyable diet may be achieved via effective meal planning and creating a gluten-free shopping list. Including gluten-free food items and investing in kitchen gear that reduces cross-contamination are also beneficial ideas. Meal preparation becomes more convenient and stress-free when you plan ahead.

Reading packaged food labels attentively is a crucial component of effectively adhering to a gluten-free diet. This includes “gluten-free” labeling and ingredient listings. Because ingredients might change at any time, checking labels every time you shop is critical.

Consume whole, natural, gluten-free foods. One-ingredient foods are often gluten-free such as fruits, vegetables, unprocessed meats, poultry, fish, beans, root vegetables, and eggs are all examples. You can also consider gluten-free grains and cereals.

Simple ways to maintain a gluten-free lifestyle

When following a gluten-free diet, navigating social situations can be challenging. It often involves explaining your dietary limitations to those around you. To effectively convey your requirements and inform others about the gluten-free diet, consider the following:

Explain the dietary limitations

Clearly communicate your need to avoid gluten and describe the specific foods or ingredients that contain gluten.

Highlight the health benefits

Emphasize the positive impact the gluten-free diet has on your health. Mention any improvements you have experienced or medical reasons behind your choice.

Create a gluten-free-friendly environment at home

Maintaining a gluten-free household is crucial for sticking to your diet. First, thoroughly clean kitchen surfaces, utensils, and cookware to eliminate any traces of gluten. Next, designate specific spaces or shelves in the pantry and refrigerator exclusively for gluten-free food to prevent cross-contamination.

Lastly, educate your household members about the significance of avoiding foods that contain gluten and seek their support in maintaining a gluten-free environment. By implementing these practices, you can create a safe and supportive home environment for your gluten-free lifestyle.

In conclusion

A gluten-free diet can be a big lifestyle shift, but it has various benefits for people with celiac disease, gluten sensitivity, or those looking to enhance their health. While difficulties might arise, sustaining a gluten-free lifestyle in the household may be accomplished with efficient communication, creating a gluten-free environment, and seeking support.

Stay optimistic, concentrate on the delicious and broad selection of gluten-free meals available, and enjoy the significant effect you have on your health and quality of life.

Online shopping has become increasingly popular over the years, especially with the growth of e-commerce.

shopping, consumers can purchase items from the comfort of their homes and have them delivered directly to their doorstep. It is convenient, saves time, and allows for comparison shopping. However, safe and efficient online shopping is important to avoid scams and protect personal information.

This article will discuss the best practices for safe and efficient online shopping and how to identify and avoid online shopping scams. Whether you’re an experienced online shopper or new to online shopping, these tips will help you shop confidently and get the most out of your online shopping experience.

Tips for safe and efficient online shopping

Shopping online can save you money and time, but it’s essential to protect your personal data and ensure you get the best deals. This section will review the best practices for online shopping, and by following these guidelines, you will have a safe and stress-free online shopping experience.

Use reputable websites and apps

Victims of online shopping fraud lost $380 million in a single year, and 36% of online retail fraud begins with a bogus website. So before making any purchases online, ensure that your website or app is reputable.

These look-alike websites attract customers because they offer popular hard-to-find items such as specialty shoes or electronics. Websites with secure connections will have an “https” in their URL, which indicates that the website has a secure connection and is safe for transactions.

Look for secure payment options

Credit cards are generally the most secure way to pay for items online. Credit cards use online security features such as encryption and fraud monitoring to keep your accounts and personal information safe. Most issuers also provide zero fraud liability, ensuring you will not be held liable for fraudulent transactions charged to your credit card.

Avoid direct wire transfers, bank transfers, debit cards, and mailing cash or checks because they may not provide the same level of fraud protection. If you don’t want to give your credit card information to various retailers, you could use an online payment service such as PayPal or Google Wallet.

Read product reviews

Before making any purchases read product reviews from previous customers. This will provide insight into the quality of the product and the seller’s credibility. Be wary of sellers with limited or negative reviews.

Compare prices

One of the benefits of online shopping is the ability to compare prices from multiple sellers. Use price comparison websites or apps to find the best deals. Also, be wary of prices that are significantly lower than the average, as they may be a sign of counterfeit products or scams.

Check return policies

Before making a purchase, check the seller’s return policy. Ensure that they have a clear and fair policy for returns and exchanges. Avoid sellers with restrictive or unclear return policies.

Use discounts and coupons

Take advantage of discounts and coupons offered by sellers. Sign up for newsletters or loyalty programs to receive exclusive offers and promotions. Be wary of deals that seem too good to be true, as they may be a sign of scams.

How to avoid online shopping scams

Unfortunately, online shopping scams are on the rise, and it’s critical to understand how to recognize and prevent them. In this section, you will be able to recognize online shopping scams like phishing and how to protect yourself from fraud and other malicious activities.

You can avoid becoming a victim of online shopping scams by being cautious about the risks and taking the necessary precautions. Here are the following tips:

Recognize common scams

Be aware of common online shopping scams, such as phishing e-mails, fake websites, and counterfeit products. Also, watch out for unsolicited emails or text messages that ask for personal information or provide links to unfamiliar websites.

Trust your instincts

If something seems too good to be true or makes you uncomfortable, trust your instincts and avoid purchasing. Be careful of sellers who pressure you to purchase or ask for personal information.

Do not share personal information

Expect to provide a payment method, a delivery address, a contact number, and an email address, but if the seller inquires about additional information, walk away.

You should never give them your bank account number, social security number, or driver’s license number. Some companies will ask you questions about your interests, but these should always be optional, and you should be cautious about answering them.

Use strong passwords

When creating accounts on shopping websites, use strong passwords that are difficult to guess. Things that need to be considered when making strong passwords are: never use personal information; make your password longer, at least six characters long; use a different password for each account; include numbers, symbols, and both uppercase and lowercase letters.

Avoid using words from the dictionary. Lastly, avoid using the same password for multiple accounts, and change your password regularly.

Avoid clicking on suspicious links

Lastly, avoid clicking on links in unsolicited emails or text messages, as they may lead to fake websites or malware. When in doubt, hover your mouse over the hyperlink text without clicking it; you should be able to see the full URL, which will help you determine that it leads to a legitimate website.

5 Ways to enhance your online shopping experience

In addition to practicing safe and efficient online shopping, there are ways to enhance your overall experience. By following these suggestions, you can shop confidently and get the best value for your money.

Sign up for loyalty programs and newsletters

Many online sellers offer loyalty programs and newsletters that provide exclusive offers and promotions. By signing up for these programs, take advantage of these deals and stay informed about new products.

Create wish lists

Creating a wish list on an online shopping website or app can help you keep track of products you are interested in and monitor their prices. Some websites even offer price-drop notifications for items on your wish list.

Use online shopping tools

This article will walk you through the process of preparing nutritious meals that will satisfy your daily nutritional requirements.

What is meal planning?

Meal planning can be considered our “daily food guide”, it is the process of creating a schedule of meals that, given the resources at hand, will provide each person in the household with adequate nutrition. It aids you in making decisions about your daily and mealtime food intake.

The following practices are part of meal planning:

Managing eating out and special occasions

Managing food types and portions

Incorporating dietary fiber

Understanding appropriate serving sizes

Incorporating favorite recipes

Making grocery lists

Creating food budgets

Organizing nutritious meals that take into account household preferences

Maximizing the use of leftovers

Benefits of meal planning

Preparing your meals in advance can be beneficial as follows:

Saves money

Meal planning is a great way to save money because it reduces the need to eat out at restaurants, especially fast food.

Additionally, meal planning can reduce the cost of groceries by letting you make more conscious choices. Making a plan enables you to identify the exact ingredients you will need throughout the week so you can prepare meals easily.

Sustainable for the environment

Meal planning is beneficial for the environment because you will be less likely to purchase excessive ingredients or fresh produce, thanks to the notes you have based on the meal plan. Overall, it is great for budgeting, especially when you factor in ingredients you already have on hand and it also minimizes the risk of wasting food.

Saves time

It is surely difficult to be hungry and realize you have nothing prepared. Meal planning makes life easier and creates less stress because you don’t have to worry about what you are going to eat for breakfast, lunch, or dinner every time.

Improves diet quality and variety

It has been proven that the amount of time spent preparing meals at home was linked to indicators of a higher-quality diet, such as significantly more frequent consumption of vegetables, salads, fruits, and juices.

Due to portion control, prepping meals in advance may also help with weight loss, especially if you are batch cooking. Furthermore, it might make you feel satisfied but not stuffed. Planning ahead allows you to use various ingredients and put together a more balanced plate, which makes you feel full and satisfied.

The risk of dying from any cause is significantly increased when individuals are frequently eating out. People who frequently ate less than one takeout meal per week lived longer than those who frequently went out to eat with two meals or more per day. Takeout food has higher amounts of sodium, total fat, saturated fat, and calories than home-cooked food.

That explains why it’s crucial to plan your meals to make sure you fulfill the nutrients your body needs. If you are unsure of how to start meal planning, we provide you with some simple and easy steps to get you started.

Steps to meal planning success

Meal planning may seem inconvenient to those who are unfamiliar with it, but this is typical because we approach it from the outcome; when all the recipes have been chosen, all the groceries have been purchased, and a week’s worth of dinners have been successfully prepared.

However, you will be glad if you know the strategies and start to develop a habit of meal planning. Here are some of the steps to get you started:

1. Create a plan that works for you

Different people have different ideas of what meal planning looks like. Some people make a grocery list based on the meals they’ll prepare and eat throughout the coming week. Others prepare and portion out all of their meals for the upcoming week using meal prep containers, so they would not need to cook. And for some, it combines the two.

Select the meal-planning strategy that works best for you and your family. The main goal is to plan your meals for the entire week, so you can prepare as much or as little in advance as you wish.

2. Make a menu

Every week, set aside a specific time to determine how many meals you will actually need to prepare, and try to make a meal that is nutritious. Plan servings based on the size of your household as well. Try to select a recipe that has common ingredients to minimize food waste and save money. Maintain this schedule every week.

3. Shop for ingredients

Look in your refrigerator and pantry for both items that need to be used and staples that you already have. Make a list of the remaining groceries you need. It is also good to stock up on basic ingredients and spices to make it easier for you when you prepare your meal.

4. Follow your plans but remain flexible

After all of that effort, you naturally want to follow your plan, but there will inevitably be days when unforeseen circumstances occur or you lack the energy to complete your plan. That’s alright; just make a backup arrangement to ensure that your ingredients are not completely wasted. For example, you can preserve your food to minimize food waste.

In conclusion

To maintain a healthy and balanced diet, meal planning is essential. Aside from saving time and money, it also enables mindful food selection and reduces food waste. You can make sure food is giving your body the right nutrients you need for optimum health by making meal plans in advance.

By using these helpful tips, you can create a meal plan that works for you and your family, minimizing the stress and hassle of deciding what to eat. Start making plans now to move toward a happier and healthier life.

What does sustainability mean to you? Solar panels clung to rooftops or massive windmill farms? All of these practices may be true to sustainability, but they are out of reach for the vast majority of people.

In general, sustainability is trying to meet our own needs without jeopardizing future generations’ possibility to fulfill their requirements by not depleting the earth’s natural resources.

Sustainability in terms of nutrition means producing food in a way that safeguards the environment, makes efficient use of natural resources, and improves the quality of life in food-producing communities, including people and animals. Food preservation can be one of the many practices that can be done at home to contribute to sustainability.

Food preservation has become necessary because individuals in households may have a preference for certain produce regardless of whether it is in or out of season. Food preservation allows for variety, reduces food waste, and increases food supply at any given time — making it an easy step to take toward sustainability.

In this article, you will understand that sustainability practice does not necessarily mean having to make a big gesture, such as investing in an expensive solar panel. You can do it with a small step starting with you and your household. You can contribute by practicing food preservation at home; it is not as hard as you thought and is doable. This article will help you get started with food preservation at home while also enjoying the benefits of doing it.

What is food preservation?

Food preservation can be defined as “the processes or techniques undertaken to maintain internal and external factors which may cause food spoilage.” It is the process of preparing and handling food to avoid spoilage and food-borne illnesses while preserving nutritional value, texture, and flavor.

It prevents microorganisms in food from growing, surviving, and reproducing. You can use physical, chemical, biological, or combined methods to change the living environment of various microorganisms, attempting to prevent or eliminate their reproduction and growth.

Benefits of food preservation

Food preservation has an important role in reducing food waste and helps to extend the shelf life of food.

Environmental impact

Preserving food minimizes the amount of food that spoils during peak production seasons, ultimately reducing food waste. You can keep food intact for longer periods by preserving it, allowing you to consume particular foods even during off-peak seasons.

Nutritional value

Food preservation is advantageous because it preserves the nutritional value of food while also preventing spoilage. Furthermore, some foods that are preserved through fermentation not only have enhanced flavor but also have benefits on your health, such as promoting antimicrobial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and anti-atherosclerotic properties.

How to do food preservation

Preservation can be done in a variety of ways and some of the methods only require equipment that is readily available in your home.

Cooking

Cooking is one method of food preservation because heat can kill the microorganisms that cause food spoilage. Cooking also improves the flavor of food. For example, the flavor of Golden Noble apples is sour and unpleasant, but when the apples are stewed with sugar, their flavors are significantly improved.

Canning

Canning is a method of preserving food that involves processing fresh fruits and vegetables and then sealing them in airtight containers. There are two types of canning methods:

Pressure canning which utilizes a pressure canner to preserve low-acid foods like meat and,

Boiling water bath canning which uses a regular canner to preserve high-acid foods like tomatoes.

Pickling

Pickling is primarily accomplished through a brining or marinating process. A pickle can be made by soaking the food in salt, a process known as fermentation, or by preserving it in acid, such as vinegar, for an unfermented pickle. Both of these processes flavor the pickled food while also producing good bacteria that inhibit the growth of harmful microbes.

Dehydrating

Drying the food removes moisture and prevents bacteria, yeast, and mold from growing and spoiling it. By combining warm temperatures, low humidity, and air current, food can be dried in the sun, an oven, or a food dehydrator. As a result of the removal of moisture, the food shrinks and loses weight.

Salting/brining

Bacteria and other potentially harmful organisms that cause food spoilage can not survive in a food material with high content of salt, such as when salting or brining, because salt is hypertonic.

Wet salting or pickling involves rubbing the food with salt before pouring brine over the packed salted meat. Wet salting is also known as wet brining. During this procedure, the food is immersed in a brine solution. To do wet brining, the food must be completely submerged in a large pot or bucket. Thus, it requires a lot of space in the fridge. However, wet salting or brining does not result in salty meat.

Dry salting is a method of removing water from food by sprinkling salt on it and leaving it in a cool, dry place. Dry salting is also known as dry brining. It still takes up valuable refrigerator shelf space, but you do not have to deal with a large bucket or container of salt water. However, dry salting produces more salty food compared to wet salting. If you want to infuse a stronger flavor, dry brining is more suitable.

Freezing

Freezing is a preferred method of preservation in any household because it eliminates the need for additional equipment and utensils. Freezing slows the growth of microbes and enzymes that cause food spoilage. Freezing and frozen storage are excellent methods for preserving a food’s nutritional quality. Many foods begin to freeze at temperatures ranging from 0 to -5 degrees Celsius. However, it is recommended to freeze food at -18 degrees Celsius to ensure food safety.

In conclusion

To sum up, food preservation is one of the many methods that can be done to contribute to the sustainability of food processing in a household. Food preservation can minimize food waste and also extend the shelf life of food. This practice is sustainable because, through preservation, individuals are consuming foods in a way that has the least environmental impact. Food preservation can be easily done at home and it is as simple as freezing and cooking, salting, pickling, or canning.

Every year, 4.3 million people die as a result of household air pollution, with 60% dying from cardiovascular diseases and 40% dying from pulmonary diseases.

Indoor air pollution can cause a variety of health problems ranging from eye problems to respiratory illnesses and cancer. It can be said that household air pollution is a silent killer because oftentimes, the majority of households do not have the awareness of the activities that contribute to the release of indoor air pollutants. Thus, household members need to understand the concepts of air circulation and misconceptions about indoor air pollution to be able to reduce it.

Why does air circulation matter?

Air circulation is an important element that makes a household function well and can be defined as the movement of air in a room or known as airflow. Air circulation is affected by ventilation systems, cracks, windows, objects, and the movement and activities of individuals within the house, among other things. For example, when a household member is burning wood fire inside the house or cooking that results in a lot of smoke, it will increase indoor air pollution.

Indoor air pollution has a negative impact on low birth weight, stillbirths in pregnant women, asthma and tuberculosis exacerbations, cataracts, and blindness. Poor air quality not only aggravates the symptoms of lung conditions but also contributes to the development of asthma in young children.

Inadequate airflow in the house might worsen the indoor air quality within the house. So, it is important to maintain good air circulation within the house to ensure that the house has good air quality and to ensure the members of the household are healthy.

Misconceptions about indoor air pollution

Did you know that pollution is not only happening outdoors? Many people somewhat believe that this is true. However, it is a misconception because air pollution can happen inside the house too. The source of indoor air pollution mostly comes from activities that were thought to be harmless. These activities include cooking, using air fresheners, and utilizing mosquito repellents.

Cooking

Cooking is done using a variety of heat sources such as gas, wood, and electricity. Each of these heat sources can contribute to indoor air pollution while cooking. The combustion from cooking, especially in low-efficiency home stoves, emits high levels of a variety of air pollutants, resulting in severe air pollution and negative health consequences. Inefficient solid fuel combustion in home stoves contributes to severe indoor air pollution, which accounts for nearly 1.64 million premature deaths worldwide.

Aerosol products

Air fresheners produce a variety of volatile organic compounds, some of which are hazardous air pollutants. A single fragrance in a product can contain hundreds of chemicals, some of which (for example, limonene, a citrus scent) react with ozone in the environment to form dangerous secondary pollutants.

Furthermore, various types of mosquito repellents such as discs, spray, or electric liquid have a high possibility of emitting Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) in the house. Exposure to chemicals from aerosol products has been linked to a variety of health issues, including headaches, respiratory difficulties, and migraine.

How can we reduce air pollution at home?

Household members could reduce air pollution in the home by improving ventilation inside the house, reducing the usage of some products that emit pollutants, and improving the air inside the house. These are some of the things that can be done to reduce air pollutants in the home:

Open the windows

First, poor air quality can be improved by opening a window and allowing pollutants to dissipate faster. Ventilation is one of the control strategies for sustaining air quality at home. Proper air circulation throughout the house helps maintain the temperature and humidity and prevent particles from building up. Through indoor-outdoor air exchange, ventilation dilutes air pollutants in limited places.

Switch to gas stoves

Second, change the cooking methods from traditional cooking such as using wood fuel to a gas stove. Although a gas stove also emits pollutants, it is better than cooking using solid fuel or traditional methods.

Carbon monoxide (CO) concentration and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentration were estimated to be reduced by 30% and 39%, respectively when modern cooking methods were used instead of traditional cooking methods.

However, because a gas stove has the potential to emit pollutants, it is recommended to cook with a cooker hood. Turning on the cooker hood while cooking will reduce the combustion that is caused by cooking activities. However, if the house is not equipped with a cooker hood, it is best to open the window while cooking to improve ventilation.

Avoid spray-based products

Third, stop using spray-based household products because it emits VOCs that are posing a risk to the household members. A study conducted in Melbourne, Australia (2019) found that eliminating the use of air fresheners improves air quality as it reduces secondary pollutant formation and concentrations.

Instead of using dangerous chemicals, try to use natural methods and ingredients such as planting fragrant houseplants, using coffee beans as a natural air freshener, and using baking soda to absorb bad-smelling odors within the house.

Use an air purifier

Lastly, use an air purifier in the house to remove pollutants. Air purifiers, which can both efficiently inactivate germicides and remove pollutants, can be used to improve indoor air quality. Many commercial air purifiers claim to be effective at removing pollutants from the environment, providing clean, pollutant-free air, and thus improving indoor air quality.

In conclusion

There is still a lot of misconception about indoor air quality although it is an important element that makes a household healthy and well-functioning. Implementing practices such as improving ventilation, using a cooker hood, omitting the utilization of aerosol products, and using air purifiers in the house could contribute to reducing indoor air pollutants. Clean indoor air helps household members to be more productive as it makes them feel energized.

Since landfill space is limited, organic waste piled up in landfills could harm the environment and the health of those living nearby. This is because organic waste in landfills undergoes anaerobic decomposition, creating methane, a greenhouse gas that will affect the temperature and climate of the earth.

Furthermore, methane may endanger the health of individuals, especially those who reside near landfills because a large quantity of methane will replace oxygen in the air and cause breathing problems. Thus, it is important to minimize the amount of organic waste in landfills to prevent the harmful effects of untreated waste.

Households play an important role in mitigating the negative effects of organic waste that piles up in landfills. One way to decrease it is by lowering the number of organic wastes generated and processing the organic waste produced at household levels. As one of the biggest contributors to waste production, households can minimize the quantity of food waste by making an eco-enzyme.

What is an eco-enzyme?

Eco-enzyme is a liquid derived from the fermentation of non-fat organic matter that is used as an environmentally friendly antiseptic because it is made from organic waste and has no detrimental effects on the environment. Vegetable and fruit wastes are organic materials that are commonly utilized in the production of eco-enzymes. Anaerobic respiration, often known as fermentation, is the process by which bacteria derive energy from carbohydrates in an anaerobic (without oxygen) environment, with alcohol or acetic acid as a byproduct (depending upon the type of microorganism) (Whidharma, 2021).

The benefits of eco-enzyme

Eco-enzyme has antimicrobial property due to the production of alcohol or acetic acid from the fermentation process of bacteria that is found in fruit and vegetable waste. Because of their capacity to destroy bacteria and fungi, eco-enzyme may replace most cleaning chemicals for a variety of home cleaning products. Aside from reducing the use of chemical-based cleaning solutions, eco-enzyme has its economic advantage because it decreases the cost of purchasing commercial cleaning supplies. Furthermore, the fruit and vegetable leftovers from processing an eco-enzyme can be used as plant fertilizers.

Ingredients of DIY eco-Enzymes

The process of making eco-enzyme is relatively easy and it only needs a couple of items. These are the ingredients and items that need to be prepared:

Fruits and vegetable waste. Do not use other types of waste such as meat for eco-enzymes. The decomposition and fermentation processes of meat differ from plants. At unregulated temperatures, meat may degrade fast and may release pathogens.

Molasses or brown sugar

Water

Airtight plastic container. Avoid using glass or metal containers that do not enable gas expansion during the fermentation process.

How to prepare eco-enzymes at home

Eco-enzymes have a ratio of 1:10:3; 1 part of sugar, 10 parts of water, and 3 parts of vegetable or fruit waste. Here are the steps that you can do to create eco-enzymes at home:

Dilute 100 grams of sugar to 1000ml of water.

Add 300 grams of fruit or vegetable peels.

Open the container once a day to release the pressure that has built up within it to avoid bursting during the first month.

Store in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated location. Allow it to ferment for at least three months before use.

After 3 months, strain the eco-enzymes, and the liquid is ready to use.

The remaining waste residue can be utilized for the next batch of enzyme fermentation or can be used as a natural fertilizer.

Additional tips and information about eco-enzymes production:

Do not fill the container. Allow sufficient space in the bottle for fermentation and ensure that the container is airtight.

Use lemon peel, orange peel, mango peel, or pandan leaves to develop fresh-smelling eco-enzymes.

A white layer of biofilm at the top during the fermentation shows the fermentation is going well.

Ways to use eco-enzymes

Here are some ideas and guidance to utilize eco-enzymes at home:

Eco-enzymes can be used as a detergent alternative by mixing 20-50cc of the liquid into the laundry.

Eco-enzyme could be a perfect spray cleaner by mixing water with a ratio of 1:25 for removing oil stains.

Black mold could be removed by soaking and wiping the infected area with 1:25 eco-enzymes to water.

A deodorizer spray for a cabinet or refrigerator could be made from 1:200 eco-enzymes to water.

Eco-enzymes could also be used as a plant fertilizer by mixing 1:1000 of eco-enzymes with water.

In conclusion

As one of the biggest contributors to waste, households need to reduce the production of waste to mitigate the detrimental effect of piled-up waste at landfills. Individuals within the household can contribute to minimizing the production of organic waste by producing eco-enzymes. A small step makes a big impact.

Laundry at home is essential for preventing infection spread and maintaining a healthy and clean environment. It includes a series of processes such as sorting, washing, rinsing, and drying clothes. While many people focus on the washing process, it is also crucial to consider the drying process.

Drying clothes can be done naturally by air drying or mechanically using a machine. Air drying is a natural process of drying clothes that can be easily done outdoors or indoors. On the other hand, machine-drying needs a lot of energy and involves a washing machine or a tumble dryer. The decision on drying clothes using a natural or mechanical process will have its benefits and drawbacks, and there has been a debate on the superiority between the two methods.

Machine drying

Time is a key consideration in the discussion between machine and air-drying clothing. When compared to air-drying methods, machine drying significantly reduces the time required for drying clothes. The heat from the machine removes creases on the clothing and makes it easier to fold without the need for ironing.

Furthermore, research shows that mechanical dryers are very efficient in removing pollen and allergens from fabric (Choi, Park, Seong & Won-Oh, 2020) due to the high intensity and heat during the drying process. This is very helpful for individuals who have allergies, especially to pollen.

Despite the benefits that have been mentioned above, take note that mechanical drying uses high temperatures and strong mechanical forces that can damage the clothes. Some types of fabrics such as wool, cotton, and denim are not suitable for mechanical drying and can be shrunk during the drying process.

A study on the effects of various home-drying methods on cotton, wool, and polyester, showed that tumble-drying results in more shrinkage than the other methods. Thus, machine drying might degrade and damage the clothes faster than air drying.

Furthermore, a machine dryer takes up a lot of space and energy in households, and this might be an issue in a house with limited space.

Machine drying could also have negative impacts on individuals’ health and the environment. Although the dryer has a lint filter, some microparticles can slip out of the filter and be carried away by the hot steam from the drying process. This can pollute indoor air and adversely affect air quality. Furthermore, microplastics that are emitted from the dryer can be inhaled and cause adverse effects on individuals’ health, such as oxidative stress, inflammation, and lung diseases.

Air drying

Air drying clothes is more environmentally friendly as it requires no additional energy compared to machine drying. Air-drying clothes, especially in direct sunlight, is thought to be the best for preserving the quality and usability of the clothes. The fibers of the clothes will hold up longer as air drying does not involve strong force and heat.

Furthermore, drying laundry, particularly in the open air on sunny and warm days, induces a pleasant and fresh scent to the fabric. It was found that the ‘clean and fresh laundry’ smell was present in sun-dried fabrics, compared to indoor-dried fabrics that had a very light, almost non-existent smell (Silvia Pugliese, et al. 2020). This is due to the physical and chemical reaction of fabrics’ surfaces and the ambient environment.

Moreover, the existence of ozone may function as a disinfecting property that causes the breakdown of organic molecules that emit an unpleasant odor; thus, may help to increase the smell of freshness on the clothes.

On the other hand, air-drying clothes is very dependent on the weather conditions. A significant disadvantage of the method is unexpected rainfall during the drying period. Winter and cold environments might hinder the drying process and it can take a day or more to dry clothes, which is an unreasonable amount of time for drying clothes. Additionally, indoor drying might harm your health because the air quality deteriorates as indoor humidity rises. Humidity will increase because of the damp laundry, and as a result, increase the chance of mold growth and malodor problems.

In conclusion

The preferable method for drying clothes is air drying rather than machine drying. But it depends on the situation and which method is convenient for you. Air-drying clothes requires no additional costs, good for maintaining the quality of the clothes, and is environmentally friendly. Nonetheless, if it is impossible to use air-drying methods due to time constraints and unconducive weather, machine drying would be preferable. Eventually, the best drying method is one that is tailored to your household’s needs and preferences.

Home is one of the primary locations that cause foodborne illnesses, and every person in the household plays a significant role in applying food safety practices.

Food contamination is mainly caused by a lack of knowledge about food safety and unsafe food practices such as poor hygiene and improper handling. These could increase the possibility of getting foodborne illnesses at home. However, foodborne illnesses can be prevented by implementing food safety at home.

What is food safety?

Food safety refers to handling, preparing, and storing food to reduce the risk of individuals becoming ill from foodborne illnesses. It starts from selecting the product at the grocery store to storing the cooked food or leftovers. The practice of food safety can be as simple as washing your hands regularly to storing food at the right temperature.

Practicing food safety is not just about keeping food clean; it also helps to protect high-risk individuals within the household due to their vulnerable immune systems, such as the elderly, children, and pregnant women. Minor food contamination might result in diarrhea, cramps, nausea, fever, and vomiting. Furthermore, foodborne illnesses could have adverse and long-term effects such as long-lasting disability, cancer, and even death. Therefore, it is best to start implementing food safety at home.

Tips on food safety

One of the most efficient ways of reducing the risk of getting foodborne illnesses is to prevent cross-contamination by washing your hands for 20 seconds regularly. Based on a study by Sonia Morya et al. (2020), consistent handwashing before food preparation showed a protective effect on decreasing foodborne illness at home. Apart from that, you can also implement other simple practices to protect yourself from foodborne illnesses:

Clean the kitchen area and food items

All food preparation surfaces and equipment should be washed and sanitized. Make sure to wash vegetables and fruits before peeling or cutting to prevent contamination, as the outer part might contain dirt or bacteria. According to Hadeel Kadhim Turk et al. (2020), washing vigorously three times will reduce the number of bacteria present on the vegetable.

Separate raw and cooked food items

Raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs should be kept separate from ready-to-eat or cooked foods. As much as possible, you should use a different cutting board for food items; one for meat, poultry, and seafood, and another for fruits and vegetables. Do not serve cooked food on a plate that has been used for raw food items before washing it. You should also separate food items because raw food may contain harmful bacteria that could be transferred into cooked food.

Marinades

Use a food container or resealable plastic bag inside the refrigerator when you marinate your food. Marinades that have been used contain juices from raw food items. As such, it is not recommended to reuse marinades as a sauce unless you bring it to a boil first.

Cook thoroughly

Cooking food at the correct temperature and for the appropriate amount of time will ensure that any potentially harmful bacteria are killed. The minimum internal temperature required for food varies between 65 degrees Celsius to 75 degrees Celsius. However, if you are in doubt, cook food until it has reached the internal temperature of 70 degrees Celsius.

Keep food at a safe temperature

Do not leave cooked food out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. Instead, you should store these and other perishable foods in the refrigerator quickly with a minimum temperature of 4 degrees Celsius to avoid bacteria from multiplying.

Select fresh or safely processed food items

Pick fresh food that has minimal damage or bruising to it. Only buy items that are refrigerated or laid out on a thick bed of ice. Use your sense of sight, smell, and touch to select fresh produce. For example, when picking a fish, use your sight to check its eyes; they should be clear, plump, shiny, and not sunken or cloudy. The smell should be fresh and not smell like rotten fish. Feel if the flesh springs back when it is touched. Ensure that the packaging is not damaged and has not passed its expiration date for processed foods.

In conclusion

Foodborne illnesses can be minimized by practicing food safety at home. It can start with a simple practice of good hygiene and keeping your food items clean. Implementing these easy steps at home might save you and your family from foodborne illnesses.
