First aid is the care given immediately in the event of an unexpected sickness or injury. In an emergency, it provides first support, assisting in survival until trained help comes. First aid should be a crucial response to a variety of medical circumstances, including treating minor injuries (like burns, wounds, and insect stings), allergic reactions, slips and falls, etc.

A first aid kit at home is crucial when residents face different emergencies. Whatever happens, having a well-prepared first-aid kit can help you feel more in control and better equipped to handle any situation that comes your way.

This article will provide insights into the value of a first aid box, give you tips on its ideal contents, and teach you how to use it. Ensure your safety by preparing a well-stocked first-aid box for your home.

Understanding home first aid kits

Basic first aid covers skills like CPR, wound treatment, and emergency management. These crucial skills empower individuals to respond swiftly in crises, potentially saving lives and reducing suffering. Acquiring basic first aid knowledge thus equips people to react effectively in emergencies, addressing your need for immediate and impactful assistance. Knowing basic first aid measures is essential for every household.

Aside from knowledge, every family must also stock up on basic first aid supplies and be knowledgeable about their usage.

Having the right items in your first aid kit at home guarantees you can confidently and easily treat small wounds and minor injuries. Proper knowledge and a well-fitted medical kit can save lives by treating patients before they are sent to the hospital.

What is a home first aid kit?

A first aid kit is a container that contains first aid drugs or medical equipment. You can categorize this kit into home, outdoor, car, travel, and so on. The home first aid kit is comprehensive for accidents or disasters, such as knife cuts or earthquakes, and has become one of the essential guarantees for the safety of family members.

Importance of having a home first aid kit

You can immediately treat minor injuries and illnesses with a well-stocked first aid kit. As an essential safety net, it keeps small problems from worsening. Having this at home ensures everyone in the family is safe, healthy, and has peace of mind.

Effective home first aid kit

This section delves into the recommended essential components suitable for different home settings. Customize the kit with necessary supplies based on your family’s requirements to enhance preparedness at home.

Basic essentials

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) reported that first aid measures can be life-saving at work, school, home, and other community settings.

However, knowing essential items in a first aid kit can be challenging, especially if you are not a medical professional. The checklist below will help you understand the necessary items for your kit:

Medical masks: Block harmful substances, including droplets and viruses, vital during shortages in disasters or disease outbreaks.

Vitamin E ointment or aloe vera: For accidental bleaching agent exposure.

First aid guide: Explains kit item usage.

Adhesive bandages: Conceal small wounds.

Triangular bandages: Wrap injuries or create arm slings.

Gauze rolls and pads: Dress cuts and wounds.

Sterile scissors: Cut gauze, dressings, or clothing in emergencies.

Adhesive tape: Secure gauze and support wounds.

Gloves: Protect against illnesses and cross-contamination.

Instant cold compress: Ease sprains, aches, and sore joints.

Thermometer: Detects fever, a sign of infection or illness.

Aspirin: For aches and pains (read warnings, especially for children).

Antiseptic wipes: Clean and disinfect wounds.

Eye wash solution: Rinse eyes during injuries or irritations.

Customizing your first aid kit is essential to provide your family with the best treatment possible in case of medical crises. Examine each family member’s medical issues, allergies, and current therapies. Then, personalize the pack based on your family’s activities, including emergency contact information and a thorough first aid handbook.

Additional supplies

When creating a kit for a particular purpose, it is also essential to consider critical documents and miscellaneous items such as:

Any required medications

Medical permission forms for each family member

Each family member should fill out a medical history form

A small, waterproof flashlight or headlamp and extra batteries

Waterproof matches

Small notepad and waterproof writing instrument

Emergency space blanket

Cell phone with solar charger

Contact information for your family health care practitioner and pediatrician, as well as local emergency services, emergency road service providers, and the poison hotline

Keep the documents in a safely secured and waterproof container

Customization

Customizing your first aid kit is not only about having a box with band-aids and a few pills but also about preparing for specific medical emergencies. Each member has different health conditions, age-related needs, and activity-related possibilities.

Thus, it’s vital to customize your first aid kit to address the unique requirements of your family members. Here are some tips for an effective first-aid kit for your home:

Try to keep your first aid kit simple. Stock it with multi-use items.

You can make a domestic first aid kit from almost anything that allows for good sight of the contents.

A water-resistant, drop-proof container is ideal if your gear will be on the road.

Cheap nylon bags, personal kits, fanny packs, or make-up cases work nicely.

You don’t have to spend significant money to acquire a quality “medical bag.” To organize and compartmentalize goods, use resealable sandwich or oven bags.

More than that, here are some situation-specific advice if you want to customize your first aid kits further:

For families with children

Add kid-friendly bandages, antiseptic wipes, and kid-friendly prescription drugs. Include necessities like age-appropriate food, infant formula, and diapers. Also, add supplies like child-safe pain medications and quick cold packs to account for probable injuries sustained while playing. You can also make mini first aid kits specifically for children in the family.

For common illnesses and diseases

Customize your first aid kit by adding over-the-counter medications, a thermometer, tissues, and electrolyte solutions to address common illnesses like colds and flu. For example, someone with coronary artery disease and who is not allergic to aspirin will appreciate a chewable infant aspirin in the kit.

For common allergies

Tailor your kit as a basic first aid for allergies with antihistamines, an epinephrine auto-injector for severe reactions, and soothing creams for skin irritations.

For households with chronic illness

Customize with prescribed medications, a list of emergency contacts, and relevant medical records for efficient management of chronic conditions. For example, individuals with diabetes or a family member managing the condition can include a juice box, glucose tablets, gels, and an emergency glucagon injection kit.

For families with newborns

Newborns have different needs compared to toddlers and children. Address the unique needs of this age group with items like diapers, baby wipes, a nasal aspirator, and baby-safe over-the-counter medications.

Assembling home first aid kit

Assembling and collecting medical supplies in one convenient location helps address injuries more quickly in the event of an accident. This step-by-step guide in the section will help you assemble a home first aid kit tailored to your specific needs, giving you the confidence to handle any unexpected health situations that may arise.

DIY vs. pre-made kits

While considering a home first aid kit, you need to consider between a pre-assembled and a self-made first aid kit. Both of these choices have their advantages and disadvantages. The first step is determining your family’s needs, which may include allergies, certain prescriptions, and participation in risky activities.

Although a DIY kit offers complete customization, it needs meticulous preparation and investigation. On the other hand, pre-made kits provide professional curation and ease of use. To meet your family’s demands better, consider combining a do-it-yourself kit with a pre-made kit.

Step-by-step assembly for DIY kits

A sensible and economical method to ensure you have the necessary goods on hand in case of minor accidents or emergencies is to create a DIY first aid kit. Here is a step-by-step guide that will show you how to put together your own handmade first-aid kit:

Select a suitable container: Choose a sturdy and waterproof container to store your first aid supplies.

Gather basic essentials: You can refer to which basic essentials must be included, as mentioned above.

Personalize your kit: Consider the specific needs of your family members or individuals who will use the first aid kit.

Check expiry dates: Regularly check and replace items with expired dates or items used. Having fresh and effective supplies in your first aid kit is crucial.

Add additional items: Depending on your activities and surroundings, you may also need to include additional items. For instance, aluminum blankets will help retain body heat in survival, emergency, and first-aid scenarios. Pins and clips to secure loose ends of bandages are valuable additions.

Keep the kit accessible: Place your homemade first aid kit in a location easily accessible to everyone in the household. Ensure that everyone knows its storage location and can utilize its contents.

First aid instruction: Include basic first aid instructions or a first aid manual in your kit.

Periodic maintenance: Check your first aid kit regularly to ensure that all items are in good condition Replenish any supplies that have been used

Budget-friendly options: Create an affordable home first aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers from local or online sources. Repurpose a small container for cost-effectiveness while ensuring essential medical supplies are readily available.

First aid materials are available in local pharmacies, medical supply stores, and internet merchants specializing in medical gear. You can find a large selection of first aid supplies on well-known websites like Amazon, Walmart, and those dealing with medical supplies. If you can, consult your local health and safety associations as well since they can recommend vendors for particular products.

Maintaining and updating your home first aid kit

Ensuring the readiness and safety of your family requires regularly updating and maintaining your home first aid kit. This routine maintenance provides peace of mind and guarantees preparedness for any unexpected medical situations. This section will explore the essential steps for effectively keeping your home first aid kit up-to-date and well-maintained.

Regular inspection

You should examine the items in your first aid kit at least once every three months. If you use your first aid kit regularly, conduct more frequent inspections to ensure its contents are up-to-date and in good condition. Mark somewhere on the first aid kit the date the kit was checked. It helps to ensure that everyone knows when it was last assessed and when it may require another inspection.

Replacement and expiry dates

To maintain the efficiency of your home first aid kit, you should consistently check and replace items affected by expiration dates (typically 3-5 years post-manufacture) or susceptible to damage from use, moisture, or air exposure.

Conduct regular reviews, replenish supplies, and swap out used or worn items every few months. This upkeep routine ensures your first aid kit remains current and prepared for any emergency situation.

Seasonal considerations

Adjust your supplies according to the season. Think about reapplying bug repellant, sunscreen, and heat-related remedies during the warmer months. In the cooler months, include things like hand warmers, extra blankets, and supplies in case you get frostbite or slip and fall on slippery surfaces. Maintain a kit that adapts to the seasons to handle any unique health issues from the weather.

In conclusion

A well-prepared first aid kit is crucial for unexpected emergencies. Boost your confidence in emergency care by personalizing the kit to fit your family’s needs, organizing its contents, and mastering first aid basics. Regularly check and update the kit to reflect your family’s health or lifestyle changes.

Bacteria may be found everywhere in nature; land, air, water, and even food. In the presence of organic matter, moisture, and ideal temperatures, bacteria multiply fast, reaching the point where some forms of bacteria can cause sickness for any consumer because of contamination.

When it comes to food safety, refrigerator storage plays an important role because it enhances food safety and reduces food waste. It also contributes to consumer health by protecting food from contamination.

This article will explore the best practices for refrigerated food storage. Learning about proper food refrigeration can be beneficial in day-to-day life, as it can provide health benefits and keep your food quality fresh for longer. With these tips, you can keep your food fresh, secure, and delicious for as long as possible.

Consequences of inadequate refrigeration

Inadequate refrigeration can lead to compromised food quality, resulting in food spoilage. Microorganisms that cause spoilage to grow at room temperature and through ineffective refrigeration temperatures.

You can observe them through food color, smell, or texture. Although food spoilage might not cause any severe sickness, the quality of food becomes bad to consume, among other things, such as the following:

According to a study conducted in 2020, older adults with low education who are unaware of safe refrigeration practices and the temperature settings of their fridges represent the most vulnerable category when it comes to food safety risks.

Inadequate refrigeration is likely to increase the risk of illnesses among the elderly. Therefore it becomes imperative to pay attention to practices and initiatives that mitigate the health risks due to compromised refrigeration practices.

Impacts the economy in different ways

Inadequate refrigeration has an economic impact as the costs and emissions related to increased energy consumption due to refrigeration were estimated to be around £80.9 million (about USD 104 million) and 367,411 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.

Starting with lowering the refrigerator temperature from 7°C to 4°C could save a lot of money and reduce carbon emissions. This action could save £162.9 million (about USD 210 million) worth of wasted food each year, and prevent the release of 270,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions.

By including only certain food items that don’t need to be refrigerated and eliminating those that don’t benefit from it, the study found that you could save even more: up to £283.8 million (about USD 366 million) and 578,383 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. By being and making mindful choices about refrigeration-related practices, you can reduce many of the negative consequences.

Environmental consequences of food waste

Food waste has detrimental effects on the environment, society, and economics. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) report, one-third of the food that is intended to be consumed by people worldwide is wasted, which amounts to around 1.3 billion tonnes of wasted food a year.

When the wasted food decomposes, it produces a harmful greenhouse gas that affects the environment. Ineffective utilization of food resources negatively impacts effective economic practices and can disrupt sustainable development.

When food is thrown out, all inputs utilized in its production, processing, transportation, preparation, and storage are likewise squandered. Proper refrigeration is crucial for food safety and in reducing the negative impacts of food waste.

How refrigeration prevents foodborne illnesses

Refrigeration is essential for food safety, as any food kept at favorable temperatures for bacterial growth is likely to get contaminated. Keeping food at low temperatures through refrigeration can slow down the growth and multiplication of microorganisms that cause spoilage and help extend food shelf life.

Unfavorable conditions for bacterial growth

Warm and humid places are the best for bacteria to grow and reproduce. You wouldn’t want your food to become the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. By placing food in the opposite environment, the conditions become unfavorable for bacteria, so refrigeration is an effective way to keep food fresh.

Optimal refrigeration temperature prevents contamination

Knowing the correct refrigeration temperatures is essential to protect the food from contamination.

According to the FDA, the correct refrigeration temperature should be kept at 40°F or lower for the best possible results in preserving food.

Food hygiene and safety

Refrigeration is essential for food hygiene and safety and avoiding the spread of hazardous microorganisms. It helps guarantee that food is safe and of good quality by suppressing bacterial development and food degradation.

Best practices for refrigerated food storage

Following a few practical tips and guidelines is important to ensure proper food storage in the refrigerator. By incorporating the following best practices, you can improve the shelf life of your food and keep it fresh for a longer period in the refrigerator.

Organize the fridge

Keeping raw meat, poultry, and seafood separate from ready-to-eat foods is important to prevent cross-contamination. Use separate containers or sealed plastic bags to store these items. Keep fruits and vegetables in separate drawers/shelves to prevent them from getting too cold.

Maintain appropriate temperatures

The ideal temperature for a refrigerator is between 35°F (1.7°C) and 38°F (3.3°C). Household refrigeration appliances can help extend the shelf life of fresh food products by improving their storage conditions.

The typical refrigerator temperature of 4°C is not ideal for many fresh products, so it’s important to ensure adequate storage conditions to reduce food spoilage and prevent quality losses such as loss of aromas or vitamins. By including multiple non-frozen food compartments like chillers (ranging from -1°C to +2°C) and a cellar (8-14°C), these appliances can substantially reduce food waste due to spoilage.

Use airtight containers

Storing food in airtight containers can help prevent spoilage and keep food fresh longer. Label the containers with the storage date to track how long the food has been in the fridge. Additionally, avoid storing food in open cans, as the metal can react with the food and cause it to spoil quickly.

Vermicomposting, a type of indoor composting that employs worms, offers an excellent solution for individuals living in apartments or those with limited outdoor space.

Here are the key steps for successful vermicomposting:

Create or purchase a worm bin: Start by either crafting your own worm bin or acquiring one suitable for your needs.

Select an appropriate location: Choose a convenient and well-ventilated location where your worm bin can thrive.

Choose the right materials: Carefully select the bedding materials and containers for your worm bin to create a comfortable environment for your composting allies.

Fill the worm bin: Begin by adding a mixture of food scraps and bedding materials to your worm bin to kickstart the composting process.

Monitor for odors or issues: Regularly check your worm bin for any unusual odors or signs of problems, ensuring a healthy composting environment.

Aerate the materials: Periodically, gently mix, or aerate the contents of your worm bin to promote decomposition and enhance compost quality.

Harvest and utilize your vermicompost: When your worm bin is brimming with nutrient-rich vermicompost, it’s time to harvest and use this valuable resource to enhance your plants’ growth and overall gardening success.

Collecting suitable kitchen scraps

Composting kitchen waste reduces food waste and provides nutrient-rich soil for gardening. It is vital to gather the appropriate components to ensure the health and nutrient content of your compost pile.

List of compostable materials

You’ll be surprised that composting can transform everyday items into nutrient-rich soil. Here’s a list of compostable materials:

Carbon-rich materials, often called ‘browns,’ include dry leaves, plant stalks, and twigs. These materials serve as a food source for microorganisms, enabling them to consume and digest them.

Nitrogen-rich materials, or the ‘greens,’ include grass clippings and food scraps. These nitrogen-rich materials raise the temperature of the pile, creating optimal conditions for the decomposition process.

Water is an essential component to activate the composting process and help break down the organic materials.

Air helps the microorganisms responsible for decomposing organic matter thrive and quickly break down the materials. Without enough oxygen, the compost pile can become anaerobic, leading to a slow, smelly, and inefficient decomposition process.

Avoiding non-compostable items

Being aware of the things that shouldn’t go in your compost pile is crucial, as these items can significantly impact their quality and utility. To ensure healthy composting, only use organic matter and avoid unsuitable materials.

Here’s a list of materials to avoid:

Fats, grease, lard, or oils,

Meat or fish bones,

Yard trimmings that have been treated with chemical pesticides.

Setting up the composting area

The composting process can indeed be expedited by selecting the appropriate compost receptacle and location.

Container options

When it comes to composting, the choice of container can significantly affect the efficiency and ease of the process. Here are some popular container options:

Bokashi containers: are tightly sealed buckets with a spigot at the bottom that allows you to release excess liquid. These containers rely on fermentation to break down food waste with the help of particular microorganisms you add to your scraps.

Stationary containers: can be bought premade, or you can create a DIY using a plastic tote or garbage can.

Open-air compost pen: offers easy access for adding fresh material, turning the heap, and eventually removing finished compost. It also ensures that the composting material receives plenty of aeration.

Composting tumblers: are designed to spin either manually via a hand crank or automatically with a powered motor. This ensures that the compost is constantly exposed to oxygen, which maintains a consistent temperature throughout the process.

Location considerations

Choosing the right location for your composting setup is also crucial for its success. Here are some key factors to consider:

Accessibility. Look for a spot that’s convenient for you to access regularly. This could be near your kitchen or back door.

Drainage. A location with good drainage can help prevent the compost from becoming waterlogged, slowing down the decomposition process and leading to unpleasant odors.

Area. A shaded area can be ideal, especially in hotter climates where the compost can dry out quickly.

Municipal/neighborhood considerations. Be mindful of your neighbors and local regulations. Complying with municipal rules and considering the proximity to neighbors ensures a harmonious composting process within your community.

In conclusion

Reducing food waste is crucial for ensuring the long-term sustainability of our planet. Composting food waste is a highly effective method to achieve this goal as it reduces the amount of waste destined for landfills and yields nutrient-rich soil that can enrich your gardening endeavors.

By taking the simple steps, anyone can positively impact the environment while enjoying the benefits of locally sourced, nutrient-rich produce. Embarking on a composting journey with food waste is both environmentally friendly and fulfilling.

So, start composting your food waste today and contribute to a greener, more sustainable future.

These chemical-based cleansers can cause long-term health problems, and their production and disposal harm the environment. Therefore, opting for safer and eco-friendly alternatives is crucial to maintain a healthy living environment.

One can achieve effective household cleaning using safe and simple ingredients like soap, water, baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, and a coarse sponge for scrubbing. Creating do-it-yourself cleaning solutions with these basic items can be satisfying while ensuring your home remains spotless.

In this article, you’ll find easy ways to save money on unnecessary professional cleaning products. Also, this article will share simple DIY cleaning recipes to help you keep your home clean without spending too much.

Essential ingredients for homemade cleaners

With just a few natural, common components, you may experience natural cleaning and eliminate all the harmful chemical cleaning solutions. Here are the following:

Vinegar

Cleaning the house with vinegar is a relatively easy task. People may typically mix the cleaning solution and apply it to the appropriate surface because it seldom takes time to activate.

The items will determine the best cleaning equipment. The following materials may be useful for homeowners who intend to use vinegar to clean the bulk of their residence:

microfiber cloth

washcloth or small towel

1-gallon bucket with a handle

small mixing bowl

cleaning gloves

spray bottle

squeeze bottle

grout brush

toilet brush

Baking soda

You probably don’t know that baking soda was initially utilized by the ancient Egyptians, who obtained sodium bicarbonate from mineral deposits found in nature. It served as a foundation for handmade paintings and a teeth cleanser.

Baking soda is a salt produced naturally by combining carbon, sodium, hydrogen, and oxygen molecules. The substance is a base, which accounts for its versatility and potency as a cleanser. Although harmless, baking soda has a very high hazardous limit.

Apart from dissolving grease, baking soda may eliminate smells and erase stains from tough-to-clean surfaces. When combined with other pure chemicals like vinegar, it becomes an even more potent cleaner.

Lemon juice

Lemon juice has incredible cleaning abilities — it can destroy mold and mildew, cut through oil, and leave surfaces shining with its wonderful scent.

While lemons, lemon juice, and lemon oil are useful in many cleaning projects, it’s essential to note that they are not disinfectants. When it comes to eliminating dangerous bacteria from cooking surfaces, they are unsuitable substitutes for bleach or similar chemicals.

Whether you’re buying lemons to eat or use for cleaning, think about buying organic lemons. The main cause of this is because imazalil and thiabendazole, two chemicals known to disrupt the endocrine system, are present in pesticides in small amounts.

In a research conducted in Switzerland, 38 distinct residues were found in 95% of the 164 citrus fruit samples, including 133 lemon samples that were mostly imported from Spain. Imazalil and thiabendazole were the most often found pesticide residues in citrus fruits.

Essential oils

Essential oils may assist you in creating a non-toxic environment for your family, whether it’s for cooking, cleaning, pet care, or home treatments.

You may achieve your objectives and discover life balance with the aid of essential oils in a natural and efficient method. Moreover, you can choose oils to support your physical, psychological, emotional, and household needs.

Below are some essential oils you may use:

Lemon

Orange

Lime

Bergamot

Mandarin

Tangerine

Yuzu

Neroli

Petitgrain

According to research, several essential oils have strong antibacterial and disinfecting effects. Researchers found that essential oils are thought to be effective against a wide variety of infections. By increasing membrane permeability, causing the leaking of essential intracellular components, and interfering with the targeted pathogens’ cellular metabolism and enzyme kinetics, essential oils may disrupt the cell membrane of the pathogens.

DIY cleaning solutions for different surfaces

Discover some of the best household cleaners that can be made from ingredients already in your pantry. Create your own environmentally friendly and cost-effective DIY cleansers with natural cleaning recipes.

All-purpose cleaner

Your pantry has a number of inexpensive, efficient, and practical DIY all-purpose cleansers (including vinegar and baking soda). So the next time you have a large mess to clean up, consider making this DIY homemade cleaner recipe instead of heading to the store.

Mix orange peel, vinegar, and water in a clean, empty spray bottle at a 1:1 ratio to create a fantastic all-purpose spray cleaner. This works well for quickly cleaning sinks, microwaves, stove tops, and other surfaces typically cleaned with vinegar.

Kitchen and bathroom cleaners

Stains and smells may be safely removed from the item by soaking it in vinegar and water. When washing plastic, homeowners should avoid using hot water since the surface may deform or release hazardous chemicals.

Also, you may use a different cleaning agent for knives and knife blocks since the acid in vinegar might harm the blades or the handle.

Moreover, vinegar may be used to clean showers and bathtubs not built of stone but rather plastic or porcelain. For everyday cleaning and disinfection, it is easy for homeowners to keep a spray bottle in the shower, which they may use to sprinkle the surface after taking a shower, then wipe and let it dry since fixtures respond quite well to vinegar.

Additionally, limescale may be removed more rapidly by soaking a towel in pure white vinegar and wrapping it over the faucet or showerhead for a few minutes. You may temporarily remove the fixture and soak it in vinegar for up to an hour to eliminate layers of hard water buildup.

Refrigerator cleaners

Use 2 tablespoons baking soda and 1 quart of warm water as refrigerator cleaner formula to thoroughly clean the inside of the refrigerator, including the shelves and drawers (do not use soap; it leaves an odor). Dry baking soda can also be used to scrub tough stains.

Floor cleaners

For floor cleaners, add around 8 liters of water to a bucket. Add 1/2 cup vinegar, 1/2 cup rubbing alcohol, and 5 to 7 drops of liquid dishwashing liquid and mix thoroughly. Use it to mop the floor and rinse with fresh water if necessary.

You may clean your floor at home with rubbing alcohol, 70% alcohol, or isopropyl alcohol, which are excellent disinfectants.

Safety and environmental considerations

Keep in mind that less is more. Be cautious and mindful of your cleaning products, and opt for safer alternatives when possible.

Be careful of harmful chemicals

Avoid and be mindful of the following cleaning ingredients around pets and children:

Phenols: This corrosive chemical can hurt the skin and eyes. If inhaled, phenols can injure the lungs.

Phthalates: Chemicals used to add fragrance but hazardous when ingested.

Ammonia-based cleaners: Ammonia mimics the scent of cat urine so that it may encourage inappropriate urination outside the litter box.

Rubbing alcohol: This can cause low blood sugar, stomach upset, slow heart rate, low blood pressure, and difficulty breathing.

Certain essential oils: Some essential oils are pet-safe (like lavender and peppermint), but others, like tea tree oil and citrus, are harmful to pets.

Formaldehyde: This is commonly used in detergents as an antibacterial agent and preservative but can irritate the skin, eyes, nose, and throat. High levels of exposure may cause some types of cancers.

Chlorine: This may irritate the lungs and are particularly dangerous for people suffering from respiratory problems such as asthma or emphysema and people with heart conditions.

Keep homemade cleaners away from children

For child-safe cleaning, it is recommended to use a steam cleaner with water and no detergent. Avoid cleaning in the presence of children.

It might be tempting to multitask when you’re a stressed-out parent and spray cleaner on the table while your child is eating a snack. However, it is important to utilize home cleansers away from your youngster. Be sure to ventilate the space after cleaning before your child enters the area.

Label and store homemade cleaning solutions properly

When making homemade cleaners, label them and use the appropriate solution for the task at hand. Always include a list of the ingredients within bottles. It’s critical to know the mixture’s components in case of an emergency.

Opt for natural ingredients

In general, eco-friendly items have little to no chemicals. As a side effect, there is less exposure to hazardous chemicals in the house, making them safer for people, pets, and the environment.

In conclusion

By avoiding chemically reactive pollutants, green cleaning methods and solutions are created to protect both human health and the environment.

The nontoxic DIY green cleaners can be easily made using simple components from the kitchen shelf. They also have a significant amount of cleaning power and are affordable.

Transitioning from commercial cleaners to DIY household cleaning products can be a simple, cost-effective, and enjoyable process. So give yourself a try for DIY recipes for a healthier and cleaner environment!

— Thich Nhat Hanh

In the book The Miracle of Mindfulness, Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh explores the idea of making meditation more accessible and even transforming the seemingly unpleasant activity of washing dishes into an enjoyable experience.

The fact is that people live in a magnificent period of convenience. Modern technology has gone a long way in making daily life more bearable. You can heat up food in seconds with the push of a button at any time. You can keep food fresh for weeks without having to pay someone to deliver ice to your door daily.

But how often have you washed the dishes while thinking about your next task? Dishwashing is frequently a mindless chore. However, doing this routine task while using your senses gives you a tremendous chance for mindfulness.

This article provides insights on how to wash dishes and alleviate stress simultaneously while doing the dishes mindfully.

Techniques for practicing joyful dishwashing

Whenever you’re doing the dishes, engage in the moment and focus on the positive aspects of the task, such as the pleasant scent of the soap, the warmth of the water on your hands, or the sensation of the dishes being washed in the water.

Then, just be present in these times and enjoy them as a lovely few moments of solitude. Slow down and tune into the entire experience of being with those dishes and helping them transform from dirty to clean. Below are some tips on how you can practice joyful dishwashing:

Allocate time

When you start practicing mindful dishwashing, ensure you have plenty of time and no social distractions.

Think about the entire process from beginning to end

Before you start moving anything, take a moment to imagine the entire procedure from start to finish. Is the drain board empty if you’re hand washing? Is there enough hot water if you live in an area with water immersion?

Focusing on the specifics of your setup

Set the stage for attentive dishwashing by paying attention to the details of your setup, such as emptying the drainboard or dishwasher, gathering all the dirty dishes next to the sink, and ensuring you have enough soap and a clean sponge.

Create a soothing environment

Fill your wash bin or sink with warm, soapy water after taking a few focused breaths to settle your body. Take note of the smells, the warmth on your hands, and the sound of the water running.

If you find yourself caught in thinking, simply acknowledge it and return your attention to the sensations in the environment.

Begin washing the dishes one by one

Choose less oily dishes first to keep the water cleaner for a longer period. As you rinse each dish, check it briefly to ensure that all oils and food residues have been properly cleaned, then gently set it into the drainboard.

Repeat

Adjusting dish placement in the drain board as required along the way. If you find yourself lost in thinking, simply acknowledge it and return to dishwashing: just this dish, these sensations, scents, and sounds.

Drain the sink

Empty the wash bin or start the dishwasher after all the dishes have made their way into the drain board. Rinse the sink’s edges and dispose of any food crumbs accumulated near the drain.

Take a moment to appreciate the clean sink and drying dishes

You have created something beautiful. Congratulate yourself!

Also, give thanks for the clean, running water, the people who created your soap, the people who built the sink, and the people who dirty your dishes so you might clean thoughtfully.

Benefits of mindful dishwashing

Practicing mindfulness and gratitude while cleaning dishes will alleviate some of the mundane qualities of the chore and also seem like a method to clear the mind and put order back into a chaotic situation.

Improved mental well-being and stress reduction

According to a study published in Mindfulness in 2015, washing dishes may be an informal mindfulness exercise and a method for individuals to de-stress after a long day at school or work.

The study involved 51 undergraduate students who were divided into two groups. Half of them received explicit instructions on washing dishes, while the other half read a modified Hanh piece highlighting the importance of being present during the task.

The researchers concluded those who wash their dishes mindfully feel more motivated and less nervous afterward. However, the group that followed the guidelines saw no improvements.

In another study, dishwashing was found to be a useful chore for practicing mindfulness. Mindfulness allows you to pay attention and attain a higher level of awareness, which can aid in stress relief and managing mental health.

Cultivation of mindfulness and presence in daily life

When you wash the dishes, the world is at ease. You wait patiently for the sink to fill with soapy water, wash each dish thoroughly, rinse with cold water, and carefully place each dish into the drainboard, one at a time.

The core of mindfulness is paying attention to the details of what is happening in the present moment to the extent that one’s level of attention affects the environment around them. Even though you don’t yet know what will happen, you may create a precedent for the acts that will come after by doing what needs to be done right away.

Routine activities like dishwashing are vulnerable places for losing mindfulness because they tend to be monotonous. While “half doing” what’s in front of you, it is simple to become preoccupied with planning or replaying a memory in your mind.

In conclusion

Finally, as Thich Nhat Hanh states, while washing the dishes, one should only be washing dishes, which means that one should be completely aware that one is washing the dishes.

Mindfulness is the discipline of ignoring unpleasant or distracting thoughts to become more aware of one’s feelings and sensations. It entails being present in the current moment rather than letting your mind wander and think about things you have done or need to do.

The idea behind washing the dishes mindfully is to approach this chore as a meaningful duty rather than rushing to complete it as quickly as possible. By engaging in mindful dishwashing, you can simultaneously accomplish the task while reducing stress levels which is beneficial for your well-being.

People have used the traditional household skill of food storage for thousands of years to prepare for times of famine or food scarcity. After 4000 years, wheat discovered preserved in Egyptian tombs was still edible.

By preventing spoilage, proper food storage retains the quality and nutritional value of the products you purchase while maximizing your food budget. Additionally, safe food storage can help avoid foodborne diseases from dangerous germs.

If you don’t know how to get started, this article will provide tips and guidelines for fruits, vegetables, meats, and dairy in preventing spoilage and maintaining freshness.

Understanding food storage

Proper food storage helps prevent spoilage and contamination of foods. Hence, many factors influence the shelf life of your food, the most important of which are temperature, humidity, light, and air.

Temperature

Storage temperature is one of the most important factors, as microorganisms have been found to grow in almost all temperatures. Below are several essential points to be observed:

Avoid the “Danger Zone.” Never keep food out of the refrigerator for more than two hours. Food should not be left out for more than one hour if the room temperature is over 90 °F.

Maintain heated food at or above 140 °F. Cooked foods should be placed in chafing dishes, warmed steam tables, warming trays, and/or slow cookers.

Keep cold food cold at or below 40 °F. Place food in ice-filled containers.

The United States Department of Agriculture states that for every 10.8 degrees in temperature rise, you decrease the shelf life of stored food by half. The best food storage range is a temperature between 40 and 60 degrees. Avoid freezing temperatures as well.

Humidity

If the humidity levels are too high, it has a detrimental impact on food storage. When dry food is exposed to moisture, germs and molds develop, ruining the meal and causing disease. Moisture also aids in the degradation of paper packing and causes rust on metal containers.

Since humidity is also important to consider when storing perishable goods, below are the three best ways to store food in high-humidity areas.

Sealing

Remove the air from the packaging to help food be safe and not spoil. Foods best suited for the dehydration method would be fruits and vegetables.

It is also suggested to store grains and beans in this manner. The disadvantage of the dehydration method is that food loses some of its nutritional integrity.

Canning

One of the best-known ways of storing food is the traditional canning method. Pressure canners provide the option of canning a wider variety of food types, as pressure canners seal the food at higher temperatures.

Canned food has an excellent food safety record. Beans and grains can be canned in a jar with oxygen absorbers and then sealed securely to preserve them for up to 30 years. Over the past few decades, there have been very few incidents of food poisoning due to the failure of the can — most accidents involved human error.

The tinplate and aluminum can provide a perfect gas and light barrier, protecting nutrients. Not only having a long shelf life, canned products can also be stored at room temperature for many years and thus save energy.

Freezing

According to a 2000 study, Delgado and Sun stated that freezing is one of the oldest and most widely used methods of food preservation. Food’s flavor, texture, and nutritional content may be preserved in frozen foods better than with any other technique.

The freezing process combines the advantages of low temperatures, which prevent the growth of microbes, slow down chemical processes, and postpone cellular metabolic responses.

Frozen

A method that can be used for various foods; some exceptions include food in cans and eggs with shells. Also, some foods, such as mayonnaise, cream sauce, and lettuce, don’t freeze well.

When frozen, raw meat and poultry maintain their quality longer than cooked meat because moisture is lost during cooking.

Light

A form of energy that can degrade the food value of foods also influences several chemical reactions that lead to the spoilage of foods. Store food in dark locations and opaque containers; light can react with the food and affect its nutrition. Glass jars or cans can be covered with material sleeves to protect them from the light.

Air

The Earth’s atmosphere is 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen. Many of the compounds in food are oxidized by oxygen, reducing their shelf life over time. Bacteria, one of the numerous factors that cause food to develop rancidly, require air to flourish. Therefore, food should be kept in an oxygen-free environment for the longest shelf life.

Storage for various foods

Food must be stored properly to minimize foodborne illness outbreaks, save food waste, help consume foods before expiration, and decrease food waste footprint. While often overlooked, storage can be one of the most crucial elements to a happy, healthy, and organized living or workspace.

But all too often, storage is used in homes and offices to conceal piles of clutter that don’t have a designated place. Here are some guidelines on how to store various foods.

For meat

Uncured, raw beef can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days. Freezing is your best choice if you want to preserve raw meat for longer. Before freezing, seal the meat in airtight packaging.

According to Healthline, below are general guidelines for how long raw meats can be kept safe if stored properly.

For uncooked poultry: it can be refrigerated for 1-2 days, or frozen for nine months to 1 year;

For uncooked ground meat: it can be refrigerated for 1-2 days, or frozen for 3-4 months;

For uncooked steaks or chops: it can be refrigerated for 3-4 days, or frozen for 4-12 months;

For uncooked fish: it can be refrigerated for 1-2 days, or frozen for six months;

For cooked poultry, meat, or fish: it can be refrigerated for 3-4 days, or frozen for 2-6 months;

For hot dogs and lunch meat: it can be refrigerated up to 1 week (open package) or two weeks (closed package), or frozen for 1-2 months

For fruits and vegetables

Selecting the freshest fruits and veggies is the first step to getting the longest storage life. Any washed and cut fruit or vegetable should be refrigerated or frozen for safety reasons. Store cleaned and chopped vegetables in a plastic bag or sealed container to limit air contact and keep produce fresh.

Different fruits and vegetables should be stored in different ways. Follow these guidelines below:

Produce that does best in cold, moist storage includes apples, broccoli, carrots, lettuce, and eggplant.

Produce that does best in cold, dry storage includes garlic and onions.

Produce that does best in warm, dry conditions includes hot peppers, pumpkins, winter squash, and sweet potatoes.

Why should fruit and vegetables be stored separately?

Some fruits and vegetables release ethylene gas which can hasten the ripening of various other products. The top ethylene-producing fruits and vegetables include apples, avocados, bananas, kiwis, peaches, pears, and tomatoes, whereas the most ethylene-sensitive produce includes cucumbers, grapes, leafy greens, and peppers.

Here are several tips for handling raw fruit and vegetables:

During storage and preparation, keep unwashed fresh fruits and vegetables apart from ready-to-eat meals.

Use separate chopping boards, knives, and utensils for unclean raw veggies and ready-to-eat meals, or thoroughly wash these items between uses.

Always wash your hands thoroughly when handling raw food, including vegetables.

Check the label carefully; unless the wrapping around the veggies states “ready to eat,” vegetables must be washed, peeled, or cooked before eating.

Rubbing vegetables under water, such as in a bowl of cold water, will help to reduce splashing. Wash the least soiled things first and give them all a last rinse. Brushing off dried soil before washing may help minimize the amount of washing required to clean the veggies.

For dairy

Refrigerators and freezers need to be periodically cleaned and adjusted at the right storage temperature to ensure the security and quality of dairy products. Make sure the freezer is at 0°F or colder, and the refrigerator is running at 41°F or less using a thermometer.

Frozen dairy products are safe as long as they are frozen. But for maximum quality, adhere to the advised storage durations. Beginning with clean hands, utensils, and preparation spaces can help ensure that dairy products are ready for storage.

Here are storage guidelines for dairies (from the Food Marketing Institute’s The Food Keeper):

For milk, plain or flavored: it can be refrigerated up to 1 week, or frozen for three months;

For buttermilk: it can be refrigerated for 1-2 week, or frozen for three months;

For hard cheese (Cheddar, Swiss): it can be refrigerated up to 6 months unopened, 3-4 weeks opened; or frozen for six months;

For cheese, processed slices: it can be refrigerated for 3-4 weeks; unfortunately, it doesn’t freeze well;

For cheese, shredded (Cheddar, etc.): it can be refrigerated up to 1 month, or frozen for 3-4 months;

For soft cheese (Brie): it can be refrigerated for 1-2 weeks, or frozen for six months;

For cottage cheese (Ricotta): it can be refrigerated up to 2 weeks unopened or one week opened; unfortunately, it doesn’t freeze well;

For half & half cream: it can be refrigerated for 3-4 days, or frozen for four months;

For cream, whipping, ultra-pasteurized: it can be refrigerated up to 1 month unopened, one week opened; unfortunately, it doesn’t freeze well;

For sour cream: it can be refrigerated for 7-21 days (follow date on package); unfortunately, it doesn’t freeze well;

For yogurt: it can be refrigerated for 7-14 days, or frozen for 1-2 months;

For ice cream: 2-4 months when frozen

For eggs

A common mistake is storing eggs in the handy built-in section by the door. Egg racks are susceptible to changes in temperature due to the fridge door opening and closing and can cause your eggs to go rotten more quickly.

A study in 2014 found that consumers who stored eggs t in the refrigerator would do this on the top or middle shelf, which could lead to meat juice contaminating other foods. Store eggs in the coldest part of the refrigerator, which is at the back of the bottom shelf.

For grains and dry goods

Dried foods should be kept in cold, dry, and dark places. Dried food storage durations range from four months to a year. Because heat affects food quality, the storage temperature influences the length of storage; the higher the temperature, the shorter the storage time.

If dry food is not stored in an airtight container, moisture may be absorbed. This results in clumpy powders and limp biscuits or crackers.

For leftovers

Many people frequently have leftovers when dining out or preparing food at home. Therefore, it is important to ensure the meal is prepared at a safe temperature and quickly place leftovers in the refrigerator to keep them safe.

The two primary causes of foodborne disease are not preparing food to an acceptable temperature and leaving food out at an unhealthy temperature. Handling leftovers safely is crucial if you want to reduce the risk of foodborne disease. Here are some tips on storing leftovers:

Don’t refrigerate leftover soup broth, tuna fish, cranberry sauce, or other foods in cans. Once a can is opened, residual metal on the rim can leach into food and leave a metallic taste.

Follow the ‘first in, first out’ rule.

Store all leftovers in leak-proof, clear containers or wraps.

Mark the date on the storage container

Never taste leftovers — just do the smell test.

Observe the two-hour rule. Discard any perishables left out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. In hot weather, reduce this time to one hour.

Aside from storing leftovers, it is also essential for you to know the guidelines on how to reheat foods. Below are some tips on reheating leftovers.

Before reheating frozen leftovers, properly defrost them by placing them in the refrigerator or using the defrost function in the microwave. Refrigerate after defrosting, then consume within three to four days.

Do not reheat leftovers more than once.

Do not refreeze leftovers that have already been defrosted.

Serve reheated leftovers immediately.

Reheat the leftovers to a temperature of 165°F (70°C) for two minutes. To ensure equal heating, stir food as it is being heated, especially if using a microwave.

Unhealthy mistakes you might be making with leftovers

Keeping leftovers for too long is a big mistake. According to the FDA Food Code, all perishable foods opened or prepared should be thrown out after a maximum of seven days.

In 2021, a 19-year-old man had severe food poisoning after eating leftovers. After eating leftover chicken, rice, and lo mein, the guy was covered head to toe in a purple rash, his oxygen levels plummeted, and he was transferred by a medical helicopter within 24 hours.

In conclusion

Understanding how to store food properly minimizes food wastage, enhances food safety, reduces food spending, and maintains food quality by keeping its flavor, color, texture, and nutrients.

Contamination and health risks can be prevented with good practice on how to keep food stock fresh and well-kept. And by applying and understanding the tips in this article, you can live a healthy and organized life.

Water is life, as the saying goes. We use water for food, health, livelihood, fun, and leisure. But water can also take away life when it’s contaminated or, worse, in the case of a water shortage. Water does affect our daily lives, proving that there is no life on Earth without water.

A report in the USA showed that the average American family uses more than 300 gallons of water per day at home. And roughly 70% of this use occurs indoors.

According to a UNESCO report in 2021, “The values of water to human well-being extend well beyond its role in supporting direct physical life-sustaining functions, and include mental health, spiritual well-being, emotional balance, and happiness.”

Simply saving water in our daily activities not only goes a long way to help alleviate these impending shortages, but also saves more lives. By simply thinking about water while using it around the home, we will naturally become more efficient with it and play a huge role in protecting our environment and this precious resource.

Consequences of water shortages

In the modern world, we’re lucky to be able to take it for granted that our homes have a constant supply of clean and safe running water.

When there is a water shortage, families are forced to cook with and drink contaminated water. Moreover, unsafe water is the primary cause of/ high rates of diarrheal and waterborne diseases like cholera, hepatitis A, typhoid, and polio among children. As a result, children are constantly exposed to a myriad of health complications, curtailing their physical and mental development and exacerbating malnutrition and stunting. In extreme cases, these diseases can lead to lifelong morbidities and even death.

4Rs method: the heart of global water conservation

Water is becoming a worldwide problem, it has become very important for each one of us to follow the principles of the 4Rs of Water for the sake of our world and future generations. Use the 4Rs of water conservation:

Reduce: use water wisely and make any changes even small to your habit can help reduce the amount of water you use.

Repair: A tap leaking one drop per second wastes enough water to fill a bathtub every week. Most leaks are simple to find and easily fixed, at low or no cost. Regularly check toilets, pipes, and faucets for leaks and repair them immediately.

Retrofit: adapting or replacing an older, less-efficient fixture or appliance with one of the many water-saving devices now on the market.

Recycle: the rain barrel method — capturing rainwater from a roof and then using it to water plants and shrubbery, common in the 1950s and 1960s, is one of the simplest examples of recycling water.

Water preservation tips

We can save gallons of water in our daily life by making some small changes in our habits and paying more attention to how we use water. Here are a few simple and easy tips to save water around the home:

In the kitchen

We use around 10% of our total household water in the kitchen – cooking, cleaning, washing, and drinking.

The most effective way to save water is not to let the faucet needlessly run while cooking; low-flow faucets flow at 1.5 gallons per minute, while conventional faucets flow around 5 gallons per minute.

Wastewater when washing fruit and veggies in the sink; or running a tap to get warm water, can be reused for plants.

Boil food in as little water as possible to save water and cooking fuel, also boiling vegetables causes water-soluble vitamins like vitamin C, B1, and folate to leach into the water. Researchers also found steaming kept the highest level of nutrients.

Save water by defrosting the freezer or fridge or putting items in a half-full sink, and only washing full loads in the dishwasher and skip the pre-rinse – scrape off food into the compost/bin instead.

In the bathroom

Showers make up almost 22% of the average household water use making it one of the best places to reduce your water use in the home. Saving just a minute off the daily shower could save up to 18 liters of water.

Another simple act of saving water is turning off the tap while brushing teeth – leaving the tap running for just 2 minutes a day adds up to 168 liters of wasted water.

With a water-efficient showerhead, households can save up to 20,000 liters of water per year. The more stars there are on the WELS label (Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards), the more water efficient the showerhead is.

Reuse leftover water for plants and the garden, or even wash the cars.

In other areas of the house

A washing machine can use more than 120 liters of water per load. Save up laundry by only washing one full load rather than much smaller loads. Using less electricity also can save water – and less energy means emitting less carbon pollution which can also help protect the climate.

Simply purchasing bottled water as less as possible, could help reduce damaging effects such as wasting resources and exacerbating climate change. Skipping the bottle is one step toward solving the water crisis.

Choose appliances and fixtures labeled ENERGY STAR which consume less water. The more stars on the Energy Rating Label, the more energy efficient the appliance is.

In conclusion

Every drop is worth it. More attention is paid to water conservation, more lives are saved. There is a call to recognize the importance of water. we need to save it from being dirtied and spread knowledge for the same. Our most useful tip: be mindful of your water use. It’s simple, the more we are aware of our water use, the less likely we are to waste it.

Human beings always need to be surrounded by nature. Research shows that human beings are instinctively drawn to nature and our connection to nature and living things is in their DNA.

On average, people spend 90% of their time indoors, yet many are not aware of the risks associated with indoor environments.

According to a study, ordinary household activities, from dusting to cleaning, can increase your exposure to particulate pollution. Whether cutting the rug or vacuuming it, you may be inhaling tiny dust particles that could harm your health. Having plants indoors is a home-healthy move because of their ability to clean the air of carbon dioxide, and watching them thrive makes us happier, and gives us a feeling of purpose and satisfaction to see them grow.

Benefits of indoor plants

There are several health benefits to keeping houseplants and greenery in the space where we live: wellness enhancements, a greener lifestyle, and healthy happy vibes indoors.

Stress reliever

For a long time, nature has been the best way to reduce stress levels. A randomized crossover study results suggest that active interaction with indoor plants can reduce physiological and psychological stress compared with mental work as nature can serve as a reminder to enjoy the calming feeling and the slower pace of life. Participants experienced feelings of comfort when working with plants versus working on a computer.

Another study found that working with nature in some form, such as houseplants, can help lower stress, lower blood pressure, encourage faster healing, and increase overall happiness.

Better air quality

Houseplants can remove toxicants from the air, soil, and water in at least two ways. They can not only metabolize some harmful compounds, generating harmless by-products, but they may also integrate toxicants like heavy metals into plant tissues, sequestering them.

In 1989, NASA studied that houseplants can help improve air quality by removing cancer-causing chemicals like formaldehyde and benzene from the air. The study concluded that in a 1,800-square-foot house, occupants should incorporate 15 to 18 houseplants in 6- to 8-inch diameter containers to improve air quality. The larger and more vigorously they grow, the better.

Healing

Sending flowers or a plant to someone in recovery helps to brighten up their space — and could also help to speed up the healing process. A 2009 study found that surgery patients in recovery experienced lower pain, anxiety, and fatigue when they had plants in their rooms. Patients have positive feelings about their recovery room, speaking to how just being around plants can uplift their mood.

Better health

For flowering plants, a study found that purple, green, red, pink, and white ones could lower people’s blood pressure and heart rate. However, purple and green flowers were more effective in relaxing the body, reducing anxiety, and improving mood. Another study found that red and yellow roses elicited a more calming response than white ones.

Right plants for every part of your home

A little greenery can transform a space—and breathe fresh life into a room. Choosing the right plants for any corner of the home adds a calming vibe and is also a go-to choice for decor lovers

For bedrooms: Snake Plant

Snake plants can effectively reduce anxiety, respiratory problems, and headache symptoms. It is also a good air purifier. In 1989, NASA studied that houseplants can help improve air quality by removing cancer-causing chemicals like formaldehyde and benzene from the air., from the air inside your home, helping you wake up feeling much more rested and ready to tackle the day.

For living rooms: Peace Lilies and Areca Palm

Peace lilies are very good at removing trichloroethylene and benzene, and also give a lot of moisture in the air.

As with all plants, the Areca Palm is biologically engineered to take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen. What distinguishes the Areca Palm is its capacity to purify the area in which it is grown by eliminating harmful pollutants also including formaldehyde, xylene, and toluene.

For bathrooms: air plants, ferns, and Lady Palm

Bathrooms require plants that thrive in wetness and heat and that can tolerate low light levels. Air plants are tough to kill, do not require soil, and may obtain the majority of their water requirements from the air in a wet atmosphere. Boston ferns are a classic bathroom plant and thrive in filtered light and moist air. Lady Palm is an excellent NASA-approved plant for the bathroom. It can help remove ammonia from the air, a toxin found in many cleaning products

For kitchens: Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has the added benefit of being both a healing plant and a plant that is nearly hard to destroy. For an instant cooling effect, rub the gel-filled inside of the leaves on wounds and burns.

For work corners: Gerbera Daisies and Spider Plants

Gerbera daisies are colorful flowers that pack a purifying punch. In 24 hours, this flower can remove half of the airborne formaldehyde, 67% of the benzene, and 35% of the trichloroethylene, and toxins from the air, particularly those associated with the ink printer.

The spider plant was one of the most potent plants shown to purify the air in the NASA studies and was able to remove 95% of the toxic substance from a sealed Plexiglas chamber in 24 hours.

In conclusion

Having bits of nature in the house, as well as clean, fresh air flowing through it, may help elevate our spirits and brighten our mood. However, people are encouraged to spend time outdoors as much as they can. Nature not only provides many psychological benefits but also creates a sense of belonging and connection to something greater than ourselves.

Even though many studies have proved that housework should be for everyone, such as children and men, there is still an evident gender gap in this matter.

A report in 2021 showed that about 91% of women with children spend at least an hour per day on housework. It is much higher compared to 30% of men with children. Despite gender inequality in household work, people could still learn to divide equally.

In most societies, sex is the basis of the division of labor. In 2018, a study found that men are more involved in traditionally masculine household chores, such as home repairs and family management, and women are more engaged in traditionally feminine tasks like childcare or shopping.

Benefits of Gender-Neutral Housework Divisions

Simply helping women with household tasks not only reduces their mental burden and relieves them from the stress of doing all the house errands. But it also brings a lot of benefits to the other person helping.

Increased well-being and decreased health risks

In an article, it is mentioned that women who work more than 60 hours per week — combining office and home labor hours — are at a higher risk of developing a variety of chronic diseases. Moreover, the researcher speculates that there may be an unequal division of household labor because the same risks are not shown in men.

Recently, a study in the USA showed that egalitarian or equal housework divisions are beneficial for the well-being of a couple. Individuals who spend more time on household chores have a greater brain volume which helps the brain become healthier and younger.

Research indicates that the benefits of doing chores can also extend to relieving stress since stress can compromise all facets of wellness, including our cognitive brain health, which is a major win.

Increased marital satisfaction

According to a survey commissioned by Roborock, 53% of respondents said they consider equal chore responsibilities to be just as essential to the health of their relationship as their sex life. Moreover, 50% said they think not helping with chores is just as bad or even worse than cheating on your partner. Not sharing any of your house tasks could be hurting your relationship.

Today, women progress and are encouraged to get educated to become economically independent, while men are rarely encouraged to do housework. Moreover, justification of women’s traditional role leads to unfair chores, dissatisfying relationships, and eroding marriage partnerships.

How To Establish Fair Housework Division

It is time for men to realize that household work is everyone’s responsibility, and their contribution can go a long way in ensuring marital bliss. More substantial relationship and sexual satisfaction are what couples who share childcare responsibilities experienced than couples where mothers are solely responsible for childcare.

When everyone works together on household chores, it creates a positive atmosphere for the family and sets a good example for the children. Participation in housework helps children become competent in many areas and acquire knowledge and skills useful in classroom activities. The satisfaction achieved gives them self-confidence and a feeling of usefulness and relevance at home and in society. Here are some steps to take toward a fair distribution of responsibilities:

Understand your responsibilities

Sharing housework helps individuals to take responsibility and decreases stress levels. Chores such as cooking or cleaning help couples communicate and understand each other better. A family which experiences shared tasks implies greater engagement and a better understanding of each other’s behavior and communication style.

Learn about priorities

A Population-Based Study in Lebanon found that many couples look at the division of chores differently. Discuss each other’s feelings about dusting, a clean toilet, an unmade bed and if a comfortable or uncomfortable feeling shows up in a messy house, and compromising needs to be made for each. Striking a balance works best if you select priorities rather than trying to satisfy both sides. Therefore, sharing information to understand how each other feels is crucial.

Stop criticizing your partner on their method of doing chores

There is no right or wrong way to do most household tasks. Criticizing your partner on how they choose to accomplish their chores will only create more unnecessary tension in the household. People are different. When most people commit to a relationship, they necessarily end up disagreeing about many things — doing household chores “just right” is one of them.

In conclusion

The idea of women ditching housework does not please everyone. Modeling shared chores and housework is vital in showing that relationships should and can be equal. A small change by taking responsibility for a task can change the situation and create more equality at home. A lot of other positive things happen as well, and this is the key to reducing gender inequality in housework.
