Being lonely is inherently painful. Your chest feels heavy. Your breathing becomes smaller, almost constrained. Your throat tightens, and your body feels unenergized, as if something is weighing you down. The truth is, loneliness is more than just an emotional state. When it becomes chronic, it can wear down both your mental and physical health.

Yet, most people don’t know why being lonely hurts this much. Where do these intense sensations come from? The answer may not lie in modern life, but in human early survival — when separation from the group meant danger, vulnerability, or even death.

This article will explore the evolutionary roots of loneliness to explain why disconnection feels threatening. It will unravel the science behind loneliness and offer practical ways to deal with it.

Scroll down here to discover the biological basis of loneliness, why it hurts for our ancestors, and how you can meet your innate need for connection in today’s world.

Understanding the roots of loneliness

As a species, humans are inherently social creatures who consistently seek meaningful social connections. Without the company of others, lonely people are more likely to have depression and premature death.

But why is loneliness so painful that it can affect survival?

In his book “Human Nature and the Need for Social Connection,” John T. Cacioppo, a professor at the University of Chicago, introduced an evolutionary perspective on loneliness and social isolation.

He argues that the sensation you feel when you’re lonely is a product of humans’ survival as a species. From the evolutionary psychology standpoint, loneliness evolved to protect individuals from the dangers of being isolated by motivating them to connect with others and avoid behaviors that can lead to being excluded.

For most of human evolutionary history, people lived in small, interdependent groups. Survival depended on others for food, protection, care during illness, and the raising of children. Being separated from the group meant increased exposure to danger and a sharply reduced chance of survival. In this context, social isolation was not just uncomfortable; it was life-threatening.

As a result, humans evolved a powerful internal alarm system. Loneliness emerged as a signal that motivates you to reconnect, repair social bonds, and avoid behaviors that could lead to exclusion.

But being in a social group is not enough for human survival. Humans have also evolved to learn social cues that indicate whom to trust and how to secure access to resources, thereby remaining protected and alive. Thus, for humans, being in company is not enough; humans need meaningful social connections that can guarantee survival.

If loneliness evolved to protect humans from the dangers of isolation, it must also be reflected in the body’s biological systems.

Loneliness as a biological warning system

If loneliness is an evolutionary signal, how does it show up in your biology?

Research shows that loneliness becomes biologically embedded through changes in the body’s stress hormone: cortisol. Individuals who experience chronic loneliness have a flattened daily cortisol rhythm, a marker of long-term stress.

This study further demonstrates that, beyond long-term effects, even a single lonely day can alter the body’s stress response the next morning, increasing the cortisol awakening response by roughly 30%. This suggests that loneliness activates the body for anticipated challenges.

According to Cacioppo, loneliness heightens vigilance and sensitivity to potential threats. When you feel lonely, you may become more anxious, wary, or socially alert. From an evolutionary perspective, this response helped early humans remain vigilant in the face of danger when social protection was absent.

In short, loneliness is a bodily function. Like hunger, which signals the need for food, loneliness signals to the brain that it’s dangerous to be alone and that one should reconnect with those around them to survive.

The pain you experience when you feel alone prompts you to renew and maintain your social bonds, promoting key features such as trust, cooperation, and collective action that can secure your place in a group.

Modern life and the mismatch problem

The challenge is that your biology hasn’t kept up with modern life.

Since the Industrial Revolution, people have increasingly lived apart from extended families and close-knit communities, often moving for work, education, or relationships. Technology now allows constant communication, yet many people report feeling lonelier than ever. Global surveys suggest that roughly one in four people experience loneliness.

This paradox mostly stems from digital interaction replacing deep, in-person connections. Yes, through social media, more people are being connected in unprecedented ways. However, the interaction is merely superficial and shallow, which will never replace the strength of the social fabric.

At the same time, modern cultures, especially highly individualistic ones, tend to emphasize independence and self-reliance, reducing everyday social interdependence.

Although living in a collectivist culture doesn’t guarantee not feeling lonely, individualistic people are at risk of developing loneliness. In individualistic cultures, people are, on average, independent of one another. They are more likely to live alone and have less contact with family members.

A study involving more than 46,000 participants across 237 countries confirmed this, showing that people in individualistic cultures reported more frequent loneliness than those in collectivist cultures. With a limited number of people around them, they have few people to trust and rely on.

How to navigate loneliness

Loneliness is not trivial. It is the very factor that can impair your physical and psychological well-being. It is so dangerous that being in chronic loneliness is equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day, according to the U.S Surgeon General.

This makes learning how to respond to loneliness essential, not optional.

But escaping loneliness is not as simple as being around more people. Connection requires trust, safety, and emotional closeness.

Learn more about how to address loneliness using evidence-based practices here.

Recognize loneliness as a signal, not a flaw

Now, you’ve learned loneliness is a bodily function that encourages you to stay connected with others. It means that when you feel the pain of being lonely, it is not a flaw; rather, it is a signal from your body that you need to reconnect with others and maintain your social connections.

Being tuned and mindful of your bodily signals is the key to this practice.

Research suggests that your brain processes emotional pain from loneliness in a highly similar way to those that process physical pain, specifically the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and anterior insula.

In this sense, when you’re alone somewhere, then gradually loneliness sets in, and you’ll start to feel the tension in your body. You need to be in tune with this bodily signal.

Therefore, listen to your body.

What does it say? Do you feel stressed, anxious, and scared when you’re alone? Do you feel hurt and sad even though you’re in a crowd? Listen to this and accept it. This is the signal from your body that it craves social connection.

Prioritize meaningful connection over quantity

Being alone is not the same as being lonely. You can feel lonely in a crowd and fulfilled while alone.

To reduce loneliness, your goal is not to maximize social contact, but to deepen social bonds. Focus on people you trust, feel safe with, and can rely on

Thus, your priority is to repair and maintain your current social network and to develop meaningful connections with others.

Here are some things you can do:

Identify your “safe people.” These are people who you feel comfortable being around, people you can trust, rely on, and feel emotionally understood by. You don’t need many; even one or two can make a difference.

Practice being more open. A meaningful connection grows when you allow yourself to share thoughts, feelings, and experiences beyond the surface. Try to disclose yourself to your safe people and have deep talks with them.

Listen with presence. When others disclose themselves to you, focus completely on them. Instead of reacting quickly, it is very important to understand and respond in ways that resonate with their emotions.

Let go of some relationships. You need to realize that not all relationships need to deepen. Some are pleasant but not nourishing. In this sense, invest your time and energy elsewhere where the relationship is more enriching.

Creates rituals or routines that foster social connection

In a busy, distracted world, connections rarely happen by chance. This practice is about building simple, repeatable habits that naturally create space for connection over time. The focus here is not on emotional depth, but on consistency and intention.

Read more: How to Create Shared Experiences in Relationships

Things you can do:

Create regular moments for connection. This could be shared meals, weekly family calls, a standing coffee date, or a recurring group activity. The key is predictability, knowing that a connection will happen again.

Set consistent check-ins with people you care about. A short message every Sunday, a monthly voice note, or a routine “How are you?” can go a long way when it’s consistent.

Protect these routines from distraction. Treat them as non-optional. Put your phone away, avoid multitasking, and be mentally present — even if the interaction is brief.

In conclusion

Loneliness is a powerful force that affects both your body and mind. Contrary to the common belief that loneliness is a modern problem, it is deeply wired into human history as a survival mechanism.

By understanding the evolutionary roots of loneliness, you begin to see that loneliness is not a personal failure, but a bodily signal that prompts you to stay connected. With this understanding, you can respond to loneliness with greater compassion and take proactive steps to foster meaningful social connections.

Listen to this signal. Take one real, small, and intentional step today to reconnect with others and nurture your sense of belonging.

In today’s world, digital communication tools are ubiquitous in the modern workplace. Employees across remote, hybrid, or on-site settings rely on online platforms to collaborate with colleagues across teams, time zones, and regions. These tools have made work faster and more connected, arguably increasing productivity.

Despite their undeniable advantages, they also introduce new challenges, such as constant distractions that lead to attention fatigue and can quietly undermine daily performance. Whether these tools boost or break productivity depends less on their features and more on how you use them in everyday work.

This article will explore both sides of online work communication platforms. It will unravel how digital platforms shape the way people collaborate and coordinate, and how you can fall into their pitfalls.

Scroll down to learn more about digital online platforms and take one step closer to evaluating your communication habits for more productive work.

How online work communication impacts productivity

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, online communication platforms flourished. Platforms such as Slack and Microsoft Teams supported collaboration among employees working remotely. Ever since then, these tools have become inseparable in today’s workplace.

Undeniably, digital communication platforms have transformed the way teams communicate and collaborate by altering when, where, and how employees interact.

Their impact on productivity is most visible in several key areas:

Enabling remote and flexible work. Online communication tools allow employees to exchange information and collaborate regardless of physical location or working hours. This geographical and temporal flexibility supports distributed teams in ways that traditional, location-bound communication cannot.

Faster coordination through real-time updates. Instant messaging and live collaboration reduce distance-related delays, enabling quicker feedback, faster alignment, and more responsive decision-making. There’s even a study that shows 90% of participants reported smoother communication with the adoption of digital tools.

Potential workflow streamlining. As these platforms evolve, they increasingly integrate with task management and file-sharing systems, allowing teams to coordinate work within a single digital environment.

Together, these features illustrate why online communication can enhance productivity. However, without thoughtful use, the very same tools can create interruptions, overload, and inefficiencies.

When communication tools become distractions

Online communication platforms are designed to minimize delays, yet they are often the very tools that quietly undermine your productivity. Yes, they deliver faster and provide real-time updates that support collaboration, but without clear rules, they can easily backfire.

Several common triggers in poorly managed digital communication disrupt focus at work:

Constant notifications. Employees are frequently interrupted by alerts competing for attention. A Unily survey found that 31% of employees are distracted by notifications every 15 minutes, and 45% of those notifications are not even relevant to their job.

Overlapping tools. Messages arrive from multiple platforms, chat apps, email, and project tools, multiplying interruptions and fragmenting attention.

Unclear messages. When employees are already overloaded with information, vague or poorly structured messages force them to spend extra time decoding meaning instead of doing actual work.

Always-on availability norms. The expectation to stay constantly connected and respond immediately adds another layer of strain. Research shows that this pressure to be always available negatively affects employees’ mental and physical health.

Now, imagine this: you’re locked into a task, making real progress, when pings and pop-ups pull you away — again and again. Each interruption forces your brain to switch contexts. Returning to deep focus takes time, and when these triggers repeat throughout the day, cognitive load builds, information overload increases, and sustained attention becomes harder to maintain.

Over time, this combination of constant triggers doesn’t just feel exhausting — it reduces efficiency. Economist Impact reports that workplace chat messages alone account for roughly 157 hours of lost focus per employee each year, costing organizations hundreds of billions of dollars annually.

Importantly, this is not a software failure. It’s a management failure. Without clear communication norms and structure, tools meant to streamline work end up disrupting it— something you can fix with smarter communication habits.

The role of clarity and structure in digital communication

Notably, online employee communication platforms are not inherently distracting. Productivity improves when expectations, messages, and norms are intentionally structured, reducing cognitive overload, ambiguity, and unnecessary interruptions.

Clear expectations

In a team dynamic, clear expectations are exceptionally crucial. This refers to what requires attention, when to respond, and who is responsible for acting.

Research on teleworking and digital communication consistently shows that when response norms are vague, employees tend to reply more quickly but less clearly, often under pressure to appear responsive rather than effective. This reactive communication style increases cognitive strain and creates downstream confusion, ultimately slowing work instead of streamlining it.

In this way, setting clear expectations on agreed response time can be a gateway.

For example, teams established agreed-upon response times and priority signaling as a means to inform employees of the tolerable response delay and what requires immediate attention.

With this clear expectation in mind, employees can avoid reactive behavior and allocate their focus strategically.

Concise messaging

Moreover, concise messages can improve productivity by reducing cognitive load.

When the purpose of a message is immediately clear, employees spend less time decoding and clarifying information. Conciseness prevents communication friction and message overload.

This is supported by a study that found email policies regarding tone, format, and structure at the organizational level have 78% potential in enhancing clarity across departments.

Defined communication norms

Subsequently, norms about which productive and collaborative tools are used and what purposes are beneficial for teams.

For example, a team will use email for decision-making and Slack for quick chat.

When teams share rules about where and how to communicate, they avoid fragmented conversations and duplicated work.

Practical tips for smarter work communication

By now, it’s clear that the drawbacks of communication software are not inevitable. With concise messages and clear norms, these tools can support productivity rather than distract from it.

What you need, then, are practical, research-informed tips to help you navigate these team productivity tools and communicate effectively in the workplace.

Learn more here for a supportive communication habit.

Set clear communication guidelines

Productive teams rely on clear, shared communication rules. Without them, every message feels urgent, every channel feels interchangeable, and you are left guessing when and how to respond.

If your team does not yet have agreed-upon guidelines, here are several key points you can establish together:

Define response-time expectations. Not every message requires an immediate reply, and teams benefit from agreeing in advance on what “urgent” actually means. Discuss acceptable response times as a team, for example, “messages should be responded to within 24 hours.” This reduces reactive checking and allows you to focus attention on work that truly requires immediate action.

Establish channel-specific purposes. Many productivity and collaboration tools have overlapping features. To avoid confusion, agree on the purpose of each tool. For example, use chat for quick questions and coordination, email for formal updates and decisions, and project platforms for task-related discussions. This reduces duplicated conversations and lost information, making it easier for teams to track decisions and stay focused on their work.

Reconsider meetings. Not all meetings are necessary. Before scheduling a meeting, pause and ask: Can this be handled asynchronously? Many updates, clarifications, and decisions work better when shared in shared documents or structured messages. Encourage written updates and clear meeting agendas as needed. This simple shift frees up uninterrupted time for focused work while keeping everyone aligned.

Reduce noise and information overload

To better manage constant distractions, it helps to reduce the noise coming from online communication platforms intentionally. Without clear boundaries, messages compete for your attention and fragment your focus throughout the day.

There are two steps to set boundaries with the team communication software you can follow:

Limit notifications. Start by deciding which people or groups truly require immediate attention. Allow notifications only from those sources, and mute the rest. This way, alerts signal real urgency rather than constant background noise.

Batch messages. Instead of responding the moment a message arrives, set specific times to check and reply. For example, you might be available in the morning and the afternoon. Between these windows, you can work without interruptions, knowing messages will be addressed later.

By reducing unnecessary alerts and controlling when you engage with messages, you protect your attention and create longer stretches of focused work — allowing communication tools to support productivity rather than disrupt it.

Read more: FOMO – Proofing Your Workday: Strategies for Peak Productivity

These small adjustments can significantly reduce interruptions and protect your attention.

Encourage intentional and effective communication

Clear communication is not about saying more — it’s about saying what matters, clearly, and at the right time.

Before writing a message, consider your audience. Are you addressing colleagues, managers, or clients? Tailor your tone and level of detail accordingly to ensure understanding.

Next, state your objective clearly. For example, include your intention in the email subject line, such as “Decision Required.” This helps recipients grasp your purpose quickly and reduces scanning time.

Another important habit is to avoid unnecessary jargon. Writing in simple, concise language makes messages easier to process and reduces follow-up questions.

Finally, choose the right tool for the right task. Emails may require a clear subject line, a greeting, and a structured body, while chat messages work best when they are brief and conversational. Matching the format to the purpose makes communication more efficient and effective.

In conclusion

Online work communication isn’t inherently good or bad; it either supports or undermines your productivity, depending on the habits and systems behind it.

As this article shows, clear expectations, the right use of platforms, and concise, intentional messaging can reduce distraction, prevent overload, and strengthen collaboration.

Take a moment to audit how you and your team communicate today: where messages create noise, where platforms overlap, and where clarity is missing. Small, deliberate changes can quickly turn everyday communication into a tool that helps you focus, work better, and get more done.

Everyone wants to be happy, but what is happiness actually?

In a highly individualized culture, happiness has often been associated with personal gain, success, achievement, and acquiring more. However, perhaps you’ve seen many people gaining more than others, but they don’t seem any happier. So, what is happiness truly?

This article will explore the lesser-discussed path to happiness: giving. It highlights how generosity can lead to more profound and longer-lasting happiness, challenging the common belief that happiness primarily lies in personal achievement and material gain.

Learn how the real secret to happiness lies in what you give, not what you get.

Rethinking the pursuit of happiness

When asked what makes them happy, people often think about earning more money or getting new things. Perhaps, you do too. Material gain, indeed, can induce positive emotion that makes your day.

Say you’re buying a new phone or treating yourself to a luxury item. These can spark excitement and feelings of joy, but the thrill fades quickly. What remains is often a sense of emptiness because these moments lack deeper meaning.

When you lay your happiness on mere possession or achievements, there’s always a next level to reach: more money, more success, or more status. Instead of feeling satisfied, you will feel restless and frustrated, as if happiness is always out of reach.

The good news is, there’s another way. When you turn your attention from “What can I get?” to “What can I give?“, something powerful happens: generosity creates lasting joy.

How acts of generosity lead to lasting happiness

Generosity is an act of giving one’s personal resources to others without expecting any returns. Generous acts can take many forms, from making charitable donations and volunteering to informal actions such as providing assistance to others or sharing food.

When talking about giving or helping others, people often assume that it only benefits the recipients. The truth is, those who engage in prosocial behavior can experience pleasure from doing so, even in a more enduring form.

Why and how?

Scroll down here to learn more about the psychology of giving and reap the benefits of charity acts.

Emotional reward of giving

In a study involving more than 1,700 participants, university students were randomly assigned to purchase treats either for themselves or a sick child. The results were striking: those who spent money on others reported feeling happier.

This study suggests that prosocial spending yields greater emotional rewards than self-interest spending.

However, not all generous acts lead to happiness. To truly enjoy the emotional benefits of giving, certain conditions must be met, and these can be understood through the lens of Self-Determination Theory (SDT).

According to SDT, human beings have three basic psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. When these needs are fulfilled, people report greater well-being and lasting happiness.

In this sense, generosity will be most potent when it fulfills these needs:

Giving voluntarily (autonomy): Giving should feel like your own decision, whether you choose to donate, decide how much to give, or select who to help. When it is freely chosen, the joy of generosity is stronger.

Making an impact (competence): When you are aware of the difference you make through your actions, you tend to feel happier and more fulfilled, as it indicates your competence in creating a positive impact.

Building connection (relatedness): Acts of giving that strengthen social bonds — by deepening relationships or fostering a sense of belonging — bring especially enduring satisfaction.

In short, generosity leads to longer-lasting happiness when it is freely chosen, effective, and meaningful. But what does it look like in everyday life? The section below will explore some real-world examples of giving and how it nurtures both others’ and your well-being.

Examples of acts of generosity

Generosity can take many forms, from everyday acts of kindness to organized efforts that positively impact communities. Although people often associate giving with financial generosity, this is not always the case.

Many people help others in various ways, aside from giving money. It can be as simple as giving your time through volunteering, donating blood or organs, or sharing food with those in need.

A study shows that hours spent in volunteering activities significantly boost psychological well-being. Through volunteering, you experience the emotional glow as you act in line with your values. It provides meaning, purpose, and a sense of competency for creating a positive impact on your community.

Moreover, the connection you build between you and the receiver fosters your sense of social belonging. These positive feelings will then culminate in a sense of gratitude for what life has offered to you.

Additionally, generosity doesn’t always have to affect the larger community. Even a small kindness can promote happiness. For instance, giving someone an ice cream as a gift can induce a positive affect and create a moment of joy.

This suggests that even a straightforward and effortful act of giving can help sustain happiness.

Generosity and happiness in everyday life

A question arises when it comes to incorporating giving into daily life. What if you don’t have enough money to donate or time to volunteer? Can it still be applied in everyday life?

The answer is: Sure, you can.

An act of giving doesn’t have to be big; even small gestures, such as saying hello to your neighborhood, offering a helping hand, or holding a door for a stranger, can be a powerful way to exercise generosity. These spontaneous acts of generosity are often called Random Acts of Kindness (RAKs).

Showing kindness to others leads to a more positive perception of others, fostering a sense of cooperation within your community. At the same time, it encourages you to appreciate the advantages you have in life, leading to greater psychological well-being.

Read more: How Acts of Kindness Improve Mental Health

How to give in a way that nourishes you

Remember that not all generous actions lead to greater emotional rewards. Thus, it is essential to equip yourself with evidence-based practice to reap the positive effects of giving. Here are a few practices to consider:

Give in alignment with your values

To experience the emotional benefits of giving, you need to reflect on what truly matters to you.

This means looking into what you truly care about and aligning your actions with your calling.

You may care about education, nature, or children. Start by noticing which social issues intrigue you most and think about the best way to help people in those areas.

When you give in ways that match your values, the joy lasts longer. Think of it as living your principles through kindness.

Avoid burnout through mindful giving

Generosity should be a soul-building path, not a soul-draining one. If you feel guilty or pressured to keep giving, you risk emotional exhaustion instead of joy.

Be gentle with yourself by setting boundaries and giving at a pace that feels sustainable. Follow these actionable steps to set boundaries on giving practices:

Define your limit. Decide how much time, money, and energy you can realistically give without straining yourself.

Prioritize what matters to you. Participating in all charity acts must be draining. Focus on the area you value the most rather than saying “yes” to everything.

Learn to say “no”. You don’t have the obligation to give your resources to literally everything. Practice saying “no” gracefully when it’s beyond your capacity.

Balance giving with self-care. Giving excessively won’t lead you to lasting joy; balance will. So, every time you feel like you’re starting to lose your spark in giving, give yourself a rest.

Reflect regularly. Check with yourself, does your giving uplift or drain your energy? Adjust your commitment accordingly.

Remember, generosity should uplift you, not wear you down.

Reflect on what giving teaches you

Every act of kindness carries a lesson. When you pause to reflect, you discover how giving shapes your mood, outlook, and sense of purpose.

Journaling can help you notice these lessons more deeply. Here are some steps you can try:

Think about a recent generous act. Write down what you did, in what form you shared your generosity, and with whom. This serves as a reminder and fosters a sense of gratitude.

Reflect on the impact. Notice how your act of kindness affected others. Were they appreciative? Did something positive happen afterward?

Pay attention to your emotions. How did you feel after giving? Did you notice a “glow” of kindness? Why do you think that happened?

Be creative with your giving. Repeating the same acts can make them feel routine. Consider new ways to give so the experience remains fresh and meaningful.

Notice the ripple effect of giving

Your generosity doesn’t end with you. One kind act often inspires others to do the same. By giving, you help create a chain of kindness that stretches further than you might see. Knowing you started that ripple brings its own quiet joy.

To notice this, observe how your actions affect others beyond the immediate moment.

For instance, when you hold the door for a stranger at a minimarket, pay attention not only to their reaction but also to whether they, in turn, extend a helping hand to someone else. Notice whether your actions spark positive emotions in your surroundings.

On a community level, you can also reflect on whether a charity you organized inspired others. Did people around you begin to take similar actions? Did your effort encourage more good deeds to grow from it?

In conclusion

Society often tells you that happiness comes from what you achieve or acquire. Yet many people discover that even after gaining more, they still feel a sense of emptiness.

Generosity offers a different path. When you shift your focus from what you can get to what you can give, you begin to nurture your soul with meaning and purpose.

Research and lived experiences show that giving — when done with intention and heart—creates joy that lasts longer than any material success. It is through generosity that happiness becomes not just a fleeting feeling, but a fulfilling way of life.

So, go out there and spread kindness however you can.

In today’s fast-paced world, it is easy to become overwhelmed by constant stress and distractions. From hectic schedules to an avalanche of phone notifications, you may feel compelled to be constantly aware of everything happening in the world, eroding your inner peace.

The consequences are bizarre, from heightened stress and burnout to an unfulfilled life. Nobody wants that, yet few people really know how to avoid it. This article will help you cultivate serenity — a state of calmness, peace, and contentment, to achieve long-lasting happiness in today’s busy world.

Read more about finding happiness through serenity, and let it become a pathway to a more durable and authentic joy.

Understanding the link between serenity and happiness

Many people strive for happiness; perhaps you do too. However, it’s broadly assumed that the only path to happiness is through sustaining or even intensifying positive, ecstatic emotions that keep your adrenaline high.

The truth is, it’s not the only way. Achieving a state of serenity is a powerful alternative. Serenity represents emotional calmness, regardless of life circumstances, not just temporary highs that you continually seek.

In fact, serenity leads to a deeper, more authentic, and longer-lasting form of happiness.

But how? And why? And how can you achieve it for yourself?

Scroll to learn more about what serenity means and how it relates to happiness.

The science of emotional serenity

In happiness studies, serenity is considered a positive emotion. Unlike other emotions, it is characterized by its low intensity, reflecting a wholeness and harmony of mind, spirit, and body. Instead of always being happy, serenity means being able to remain calm and content despite life circumstances.

A study involving more than 500 undergraduate students demonstrated that serenity significantly decreased stress and predicted greater mental well-being above and beyond being mindful of the present moment. This study posits that serenity fosters a sense of meaning in life by promoting tranquility in both positive and negative life experiences.

Serenity lets you appreciate life’s offerings more fully.

It encourages you to overcome whatever obstacles you encounter with a sense of peace and calmness. This helps build harmony and connectedness, boosting your happiness.

Moreover, once your happiness stops being reliant on external life circumstances, you’re far more likely to achieve what is called authentic happiness: “an optimal way of being, a state of durable contentment and plenitude or inner peace.”

This means you are moving toward emotional stability, developing internal resources to cope with the world’s variability.

Common barriers to achieving serenity

Reading about it seems straightforward, but in the real world, cultivating a state of serenity is challenging, especially amid the hustle and bustle of life. There are many challenges you may encounter in achieving serenity.

Check out common barriers to cultivating serenity here for a clearer mind:

Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). In this hyper-connected world, you might feel the urge to constantly check your phone, scroll through social media, and stay updated with the latest happenings. Although these behaviors may seem like mundane parts of everyday life nowadays, they can have a significant impact on your inner peace.

Rumination. You may struggle to let go of things from the past or find yourself overthinking the future. When you continue to hold onto grudges and resentment, they gradually drain your emotional energy, pulling you further away from a state of emotional calmness.

Frustration over uncertainties. At times, you may also feel helpless in the face of life’s uncertainties. Just when you thought you had finally found peace, life throws a curveball — perhaps a chronic illness diagnosis or the sudden breakdown of your family. This can shatter the serenity you’ve worked so hard to build.

Despite these challenges, serenity remains within reach. There are practical, intentional ways to cultivate emotional calmness and regain inner balance.

How to find happiness through serenity

With life’s unpredictability and constant distractions, it’s essential to equip yourself with evidence-based practices to cultivate serenity.

Read below to discover simple ways to boost your overall happiness and inner peace.

Practice mindfulness and meditation

Mindfulness is focusing your awareness on the present moment without judgment. It helps you build serenity by fostering clarity and self-awareness, while developing emotional composure in the face of adversity.

Although there are other ways of practicing this, meditation is perhaps the most well-known. It’s also something that you can practice relatively easily.

Here are simple step-by-step instructions you can follow:

Pick a focus. Choose something to direct your attention. It could be a physical sensation, such as breathing or the sound of nature.

Focus the attention. Bring your full, conscious attention to the task or object at hand. Feel the sensation and let your senses be wide open. Be curious. How does it feel? What emotions are present?

Notice when your mind wanders. The key to practicing mindfulness is noticing when your mind wanders. If this happens, don’t worry; you can always gently bring your attention back to the present moment.

Do it regularly. Even one focused minute a day can improve emotional well-being.

Simplify your environment and commitments

Ever heard the phrase “Tidy space, tidy mind“? You can achieve serenity through reorganizing your space for a clearer mind.

Imagine you’re living in a cluttered home when everything is out of place. You can’t even tell where you put things, or worse, you can hardly move easily in your home, what with everything piling up.

How would you think you’ll be able to cultivate serenity in such a place?

Thus, decluttering your living space can be a game-changer in your journey. Dedicate regular time to declutter room by room, removing items you no longer need and resisting impulse purchases that add new clutter.

Read more: How to Make Your House a Sanctuary

As you clear your home, you also clear mental space, making serenity easier to maintain

Cultivate emotional resilience

To sustain inner peace, you must learn to manage your emotions skillfully. Without this ability, emotions can easily take over and disrupt your inner peace.

Follow these simple step-by-step instructions for a calm mind:

Notice your emotions. Pause once or twice a day to check in with yourself. Ask: “What am I feeling right now?” Name the emotion clearly (e.g., “I feel anxious”).

Accept what you feel. There are no good and bad emotions. Instead of pushing your negative emotions away, you need to learn how to accept them as it is. Say to yourself, “It’s okay to feel this way.“

Shift to gratitude. Gently shift your focus by identifying one thing you’re thankful for in your life. You can say it loud or write it down. Don’t worry, you don’t need grand stuff for this. Even small things, such as “I’m grateful for the warm coffee I got this morning,” are enough.

End with a grounding thought. Close the practice with a calming phrase, such as “This moment is enough.” Let it guide your next step with intention.

In conclusion

In the midst of daily chaos, building serenity can be a powerful way to achieve authentic and durable happiness.

However, many people fail to acknowledge its power due to. There’s a prevalent misconception that you can only achieve happiness by continually looking for “highs.” But that’s not the case. Low-level happiness and daily contentment are just as effective, if not more so, for developing genuine happiness.

Serenity helps you remain content and composed even during life’s upheavals, fostering emotional wholeness amidst life’s unpredictability. So, seek to develop that.

“Just because you love me, doesn’t mean I feel loved by you.”

You may have heard these exact words from your romantic partner. You’ve put all your efforts into your relationship, yet your partner seems oblivious to your love. Why is that? Gary Chapman, a well-known author, posits that this problem arises from a mismatch in each other’s love languages.

He argues that getting to know your partner’s love language is crucial to communicating your love better. Understanding your partner’s love language can improve your compatibility and achieve a long-lasting relationship.

Thus, this article will explore the concept of love languages, identify each type, and provide actionable steps to help you apply this to a more fulfilling relationship. Read below to master love languages and improve your romantic relationship.

Understanding love languages

Gary Chapman first introduced the concept of love languages in 1992 through his phenomenal book “The 5 Love Languages: : The Secret to Love That Lasts.” He describes love languages as the preferred way people express and receive love.

He came up with this idea while working as a marriage counselor. He noticed that married couples often have difficulty maintaining relationships due to misunderstandings of each other’s expressions of love. He examined ways in which people communicate their love. As a result, Chapman successfully identified five types of love languages.

Words of affirmation

People with this love language feel most loved and express it through words of appreciation, compliments, and encouragement. If your partner belongs to this group, saying “I’m proud of you” or as simple as daily “I love you” can be very meaningful to them.

Quality time

Those with this type of love language are keen on spending undistracted time with their loved ones. If your partner falls into this category, you should make time for them, do things they want, and, most importantly, be engaged and fully present without distractions.

Receiving gifts

People in this group see presents as a symbol of love from their loved ones. It’s not how luxurious the present is, but how much effort was put into the gifts. If your partner is in this category, giving them a small gift at the perfect moment can boost your romantic relationship climate.

Acts of service

This group believes that ‘actions speak louder than words’ in romantic relationships. They love to perform behavior that can help their partner, such as cooking a meal, helping them with work, or doing dishes.

Physical touch

For some people, showing affection through physical contact is the primary form of love.

If your partner belongs to this group, a morning kiss, a random hug, or holding hands whenever and wherever can show your love to them. Don’t hesitate to touch your partner if they have this kind of love language.

Read more: Crack The Code of Love Languages

Now you’ve learned the various ways people express and receive love. But why are they so important? Read more below to understand the importance of love language in your romantic life.

Why love languages matter in relationships

Love languages are vital in maintaining romantic relationships. Understanding partners’ love languages has at least two benefits: improving emotional connection and preventing misunderstandings. Together, these improve relationship satisfaction.

According to the love language theory, couples’ problems mainly stem from the mismatch between their love languages. In this sense, speaking in the language your partner can best understand is the ultimate way to avoid misunderstandings and thus improve the emotional connection between you and your partner.

Imagine you’re dating someone with quality time as their love language. However, instead of showing love by creating shared experiences, you constantly overflow them with sweet words.

While they appreciate it, they don’t feel as loved by your words, as they are not their love language. At the same time, you’re devastated that your efforts are underappreciated.

So, instead of expressing your love in a way you believe, trying to understand their language and speaking it is the ultimate pathway. It relieves the burden of underappreciation and, at the same time, fills your partner’s love tank, enhancing the emotional connection between you and your partner.

Read more: How to Create Shared-Experiences in Relationships

This proposition by Chapman has been supported by empirical research. A study showed that couples who speak each other’s love language report higher relationship satisfaction than less adaptive ones.

Given this, learning about your primary love language and adapting to your partner’s is essential for a long-lasting and fulfilling relationship.

Applying love languages in daily life

Learning about love languages seems so easy, right? But things get complicated when you try to apply it to your daily life, especially when you and your partner have different love languages. So, how to do it?

Follow these actionable steps to incorporate love language into your romantic relationship and achieve a more fulfilling and happier life.

Identify your partner’s love language

Identifying your partner’s love language is the first step toward effective communication in a romantic relationship. You must be observant, fully present, and mindful of your partner’s needs and emotions.

Try adopting the following tips and questions to discover your partner’s primary love language:

Observe how they express love. Do they frequently shower you with compliments and encouragement, or do they love holding your hand in public? Pay close attention to their actions and note what truly brings them joy.

Recall a time when they felt most loved. What did you do that made them excited or deeply appreciated? Are there specific ways they consistently ask to be loved?

Notice their subtle reactions. Understanding what they love can be tricky because their responses might not always be obvious. Stay mindful of their emotions and immediate reactions.

Acknowledge what comforts them during hard times. When they’re facing challenges, what helps them feel supported? Is it your verbal reassurance or simply your presence by their side?

These exercises can help you better understand your partner. Try expressing love differently and observing how they respond, then rank each love language based on their reactions to find what resonates most.

Find ways to express love based on your partner’s love language

After learning your partner’s love language, you can take it a step further by expressing love in the way they prefer. First, look for what people with the same love language as your partner appreciate most.

Do some research by reading books or articles discussing this. You can also watch videos on social media like TikTok or engage in posts on Reddit. Social media can be a great way to learn love languages, as many people share real-life experiences and practical tips there.

Once you’ve gathered some insights, look for ways to weave these gestures into your daily interactions with your partner. Here are some fun and practical ideas to help make it part of your routine:

Amping up those small, daily gestures. Surprise them with thoughtful acts like making their morning coffee or simply sharing those sweet ‘I love you’ reminders.

Establishing consistency. Find a special time to show your affection regularly —maybe a morning kiss or a cozy Netflix night every Saturday.

Evolving. Check in often to ensure your love is hitting the mark. You can ask them, “Am I showing love in a way that makes you feel truly appreciated?”

Overcome challenges when love languages differ

Having different love languages from your partner can be challenging. Many couples end up divorcing or breaking up due to constant misunderstandings, often believing that their own love language is the best way to express love.

Moreover, many people may have tried to speak their partner’s love language but failed miserably. There are at least two key reasons:

Doing it begrudgingly. People often think that merely speaking their partner’s love language is enough. They forget that what truly matters is willingness. When you feel annoyed while doing it, it has already lost meaning. So, be genuine!

Assuming instead of asking. Just because your partner’s love language is an act of service doesn’t mean they appreciate every act you do for them equally. There must be specific gestures that resonate with them the most.

To solve this, all it takes is simply asking, “What things do I do that make you feel really loved?”

Adapt love languages for long-term relationships

A common misconception about love languages is that they are fixed and unchanging. In reality, they evolve over time due to life experiences, emotional shifts, and changing circumstances. Adapting to your partner’s evolving love language is essential for maintaining a strong and fulfilling connection.

To do this, engage in open conversations by asking reflective questions like, “What makes you feel most appreciated these days?” or “Has the way you feel loved changed over time?”

Pay attention to their reactions. Sometimes, love language shifts aren’t explicitly stated but can be observed through emotions and behaviors.

Many people wonder when the best time is to check in on love languages. Here are a few ideal moments:

When you feel disconnected. If one of you feels unappreciated, revisiting love languages can help address unmet needs.

During anniversaries or special occasions. Milestones offer a natural opportunity to reflect on how your love has evolved.

After major life events. Changes like career shifts, moving, or personal struggles can impact emotional needs, making it a great time to reassess how you express and receive love.

Regularly checking in and staying mindful of these shifts ensures that love is continuously expressed in ways that truly resonate with your partner.

Balance your love language

Learning about each other’s love language is key to a successful relationship. However, that doesn’t mean you have to be rigid about it.

Sometimes, exploring other love languages can add variety and excitement to your relationship.

Imagine if you kept doing the same thing — wouldn’t it become boring for both you and your partner? A new study suggests that balancing different forms of love could also be essential for a long-lasting relationship.

For example, maybe neither you nor your partner prioritizes receiving gifts. However, it’s been a while since you enjoyed a romantic dinner together. Wouldn’t it be nice to plan a special dinner for your anniversary and surprise your partner with a thoughtful gift they’ve been anticipating?

Additionally, occasions like anniversaries offer an opportunity for you and your partner to experiment with different love languages. It can be a chance to enjoy quality time together, express appreciation through words of affirmation, show acts of service by thoughtfully choosing the menu, or share physical touch while dancing.

These occasional gestures can hold significant meaning, showcasing your thoughtfulness and willingness to nurture a lasting and fulfilling relationship.

In conclusion

Mastering love languages is a powerful way to deepen understanding and create harmony in your relationship. When you take the time to learn and apply these communication strategies, you bridge emotional gaps and strengthen your connection with your partner.

By identifying, understanding, and adapting to each other’s love languages, you can enhance and improve overall relationship satisfaction. Explore what resonates with both of you, try different ways of expressing love, and put these insights into practice to build a more fulfilling and lasting relationship.

Take the next step by having an open conversation with your partner about love languages.

Have you ever been asked about your hobbies and struggled to name one? Well, you’re not alone. In this society, having hobbies is a kind of new luxury. The demands of work, the distractions of technology, and the pressure to be constantly productive squeeze your daily lives, leaving you with no leisure time to enjoy.

As the decline of hobbies worsens, they seem to become less important. The truth is that not having hobbies is a great disadvantage. When you start losing interest in hobbies, you no longer have a place to escape from your suffocating daily routine. As a result, you can become more stressed and unfulfilled with your life.

Thus, this article will answer the question, “why do we lose interest in our hobbies?” It will also examine the impact of this loss on mental well-being and offer actionable practices for rediscovering leisure activities.

Learn how to reignite your hobbies and create a more fulfilling and balanced life.

Why people are losing interest in hobbies

Hobbies are more than just enjoyable activities; they have a lot of functions in your daily life.

They serve as a medium of self-expression and give people identity. They also provide many benefits, from improving physical health and strengthening social relationships to enhancing psychological well-being.

Read more: The Benefits of Hobbies and Interests Outside of Work.

Despite this, people seem to be less engaged in hobbies than they used to. Why is this happening? Check out what experts say.

Overload from work and daily responsibilities

Perhaps the biggest reason is because people don’t have time for it. A study involving more than 2,500 people in the US confirmed this in which participants reported that “no longer having time” is the major reason they give up on hobbies.

People work at least 8 hours daily, sometimes working overtime. Many are even forced to take multiple jobs to survive economic hardship.

As soon as they come home, they still have many responsibilities awaiting them, leaving no room for leisure time. What time is left apart from work and other responsibilities is often reserved for sleep. At best, most people sit around and do nothing due to exhaustion from their daily activities.

Given this, the decline of hobbies seems very obvious.

The pressure to be constantly productive

Even if a few people have spare time for hobbies, they won’t often engage in them. Why? The culprit is the overhype of productivity culture.

Sure, being productive is good, especially for your long-term career. However, the unhealthy culture of productivity convinces you that hobbies are unimportant activities that waste your time.

A study interviewing layoff workers demonstrated that people often feel stressed due to the pressure to be productive during their free time. They feel useless for not making things out of their day.

From their perspective, being productive only relates to work, providing tangible benefits that support their long-term career, or making something economically rewarding. Thus, working on emotional stability and personal fulfillment through hobbies is not considered productive.

Read more: A Good Life Outside of Work is an Overlooked Productivity Secret

Nevertheless, many have tried to balance this tension by engaging in so-called “productive hobbies.” Indeed, hobbies can be the start of a new career or a source of side income. But, you must be careful, as the moment your hobbies become an obligation, you are squeezing the joy out of leisure.

Remember, when the hobby is no longer fun, it’s no longer a hobby.

The allure of technology and instant gratification

In this digital age, scrolling through social media has become a common pastime. While social media offers immense benefits, such as staying connected and informed, it also has drawbacks.

Social media platforms are intentionally designed to encourage prolonged usage. Features such as likes, comments, and shares act as instant rewards, reinforcing the behavior and prompting users to repeat it.

Additionally, endless content streams trigger the brain’s reward system by releasing dopamine — a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and motivation — making users crave the next scroll. Over time, this cycle can contribute to compulsive usage. People are losing interest in everything that is not on a screen.

A study has shown that increasing social media usage leads to declining engagement in hobbies. People no longer seek enjoyment from hobbies; instead, they indulge themselves in endless scrolling on social media, craving the immediate gratification it offers.

Mental health challenges and burnout

Mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, or burnout can become a roadblock to engaging in hobbies. When emotional exhaustion hits, people tend to have difficulties processing the enjoyment of leisure. They don’t have enough energy to initiate or participate in any activities. They lose interest in everything.

A study published in Leisure Sciences confirms this. This study showed that compared to undepressed counterparts, depressed people have lower participation, motivation, perceived enjoyment, and sociability to engage in hobbies.

How to reignite interest in hobbies

Now, you’ve learned why people lose interest in hobbies. The reasons are indeed complex, and maybe one of those is why you’ve lost your hobbies. But don’t worry. Here, you’ll learn how to reclaim hobbies for a more fulfilling life.

Read more about practical steps to find your hobbies based on scientific findings here.

Reflect on what you truly enjoy

Spend time to revisit things that truly intrigue you.

You can start by writing down activities that you used to enjoy. Maybe you enjoyed painting or cooking or whatever. Reflect on why these activities used to bring you happiness. Is it because of the activity itself or the people around you? Do you still find these activities meaningful?

Then, consider whether these hobbies align with your current condition. Do you have the time and resources to resume them, or would it be better to start a new one?

If you let go of your old hobbies because of resource limits, be it time or money, try new ones that align with your current situation.

Start small, set realistic goals

When you want to try out a new hobby or start again for a long time, you can’t become an expert instantly. So, set aside those unrealistic goals and start with a baby step that works. Here is a guide to help you:

Choose a hobby. You can’t start anything if you don’t choose one. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just make sure it aligns with your values.

Set up time to start. Commit to yourself when you want to start on your new hobby. The sooner you start, the better you get.

Start at a beginner level. Be aware of your capabilities. Set realistic goals for newbies like you. Similarly, don’t burden yourself with expensive equipment to start. What matters is the meaning of your experience.

Make time for your hobby. To ensure continuity, schedule regular time for your hobby.

Appreciate the progress. It’s okay if you feel stuck sometimes. Learning something new always takes time. Celebrate any small wins and embrace the challenges.

Prioritize leisure by minimizing distractions

To live a more engaged life, you should start setting boundaries with your phone. For example, you can set the notifications to silent to avoid distractions, often keeping you away from your hobbies.

Or, if you’re up for something more drastic, consider uninstalling social media apps like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter.

Check out your app manager to see which apps take up most of your time — you’re probably wasting a lot of time there! You can also look for platforms that offer similar features or content to keep you connected without overload.

By eliminating these, you have less distraction and can commit better to your scheduled hobbies.

Experiment with new activities

Sometimes, you can get bored or feel like you don’t want to continue with the new hobby. Or, you just want to try things you’ve always wanted to do.

That’s fine. As you’re still looking for the perfect hobby, you can always start a new hobby that truly resonates with you. Exploring these new activities can help you discover the true you.

However, the question is how to experiment with new activities without giving up too easily on what you already have. Of course, you don’t want to end up having no hobbies at all because you can’t make up your mind, right?

To avoid this disaster, try to gamify your hobby — transforming a mundane activity into a fun and enjoyable game. This enables you to experiment with your chosen hobby before you start a new one. Here’s how to do it:

Set an end goal. Let’s say you pick drawing as your new hobby. Your end goal is to be able to create a manga or cartoon character within a year.

Build levels. Divide the end goal into smaller steps with increasing difficulty in each level. You can also include the length of time needed to complete and rewards.

Do some side quests. Are you familiar with the term side quests? These are other goals that the characters in the game can explore outside their primary goal. Commonly, side quests are still related to the main goal. For instance, if you’re now into conventional drawing, you can learn how to draw digitally. This step allows you to give variety in your hobby and act as a bridge to your other potential hobbies.

Try out new things. If the three steps above do not help you, you can start a new hobby. It can be related to your previous hobby or a completely different one.

Join communities or classes

One simple trick to boosting your hobby journey is participating in a club.

For instance, if you love sports, find an active local sports club. By joining such community clubs, you can make new friends, get coaching, and get materials to level up your skills.

Moreover, this club can also be the start of your expert career. Some clubs often have internal competition or even have a link to external ones. This is a good start if you aim to be a professional.

Even if you’re not interested in winning a competition, attending events held by your clubs can significantly improve your well-being by boosting personal fulfillment.

In conclusion

In an era of hustle and bustle, having time for hobbies seems like a privilege.

You’ve been living in a tight schedule, pressured by productivity norms, and constantly distracted by notifications. Your well-being has deteriorated from this madness; you may have lost interest in life. Ironically, these make it harder for you to start a hobby.

Nevertheless, meaningful leisure activities are still possible. Rediscover your hobbies by carefully reflecting on what inspires you, exploring new activities, and taking small steps to realize them.

Start taking real action to reclaim your hobbies for a more balanced and fulfilling life now.

You might have a long-term goal you’ve always dreamed of. You keep pushing forward no matter the cost, believing that the only path to success is never giving up. Every setback pushes you harder, and every failure signifies that you haven’t tried enough.

Yet, as you continue, physical and mental exhaustion sets in. You feel your body and mind breaking down. Despite this, you refuse to let it go, believing that if you push a little bit harder, you’ll break through. Then, burnout hits. You start to wonder, is endless persistence truly the only path to success? Or is it okay to give up?

While persistence is essential, disengaging from goals is also necessary, especially when they are too costly. This article will explore the concept of goal disengagement, challenge the stigma around giving up, and discuss when to let go of unrealistic goals.

Read more to learn when to give up and the benefits of letting go of unrealistic goals.

Challenging the myth of continuous persistence

Persistence — the ability to resist giving up — is crucial in achieving goals. It helps you acquire skills through constant trial and error. It is no wonder this is often considered the sole path to success.

Yet, pursuing goals is never without challenges. Sometimes, setbacks or circumstances call for a pause. For instance, you’ve been a hard-working employee, pushing yourself to become a successful manager at your dream company. Everything was going great, and your determination made you feel like success was just around the corner.

Then, out of the blue, you fell seriously ill, and you had to take a long break. It’s tough, but you’ve got to take the time you need to recover before getting back into things.

The scenario above exemplifies the very nature of goal pursuit. It is full of hurdles, forcing you to hold back sometimes. In this sense, you don’t need constant persistence but episodic persistence — the ability to halt and resume when the condition improves.

Ultimately, balancing continuous and episodic persistence is the key to successful living. However, when a goal becomes too costly or misaligned with your values, disengaging from it is often best for your well-being.

But what does it mean to disengage from goals?

The concept of goal disengagement

Wrosch et al. defined goal disengagement as “reduction of effort and relinquishment of commitment.”

It’s important to note that both processes (reducing effort and relinquishing commitment) must go hand in hand. If you give up the effort while maintaining the commitment, you can become distressed. You are still emotionally and mentally tied to the goal but without pursuing any action.

In other words, goal disengagement means completely giving up — practically and emotionally.

Worsch et al.’s Life-Span Development theory argues that knowing which goals to pursue and which to withdraw is vital. That is because life has very time and resources. This strategic choice lets you achieve more meaningful goals and protects you from the harm of pursuing unrealistic goals.

Unfortunately, goal withdrawal is often considered a failure.

Disengagement is not the same as the inability to achieve goals. Instead, it is an adaptive, self-regulatory response to avoid wasting further resources — time, energy, and emotional investment — on a futile pursuit.

Goal disengagement involves knowing when to let go of unrealistic goals and protecting yourself from permanently damaging your well-being. This distinction sets goal disengagement apart from failure.

Despite its benefits, giving up on goals is difficult, especially regarding long-life goals. A big reason for this is the sunk cost fallacy.

The sunk cost fallacy

Imagine you are a student who has spent three years pursuing medical science. Halfway to your degree, you face financial challenges and burnout due to constant stress. Also, you realize that your passion lies in environmental engineering.

Despite this, you refuse to switch degrees and keep pursuing your current major. You’re afraid to waste all the time, effort, and money you have spent for years.

The scenario above exemplifies the sunk cost fallacy — an inclination to stay in the current direction because of how much you’ve already invested, even if it becomes detrimental overall. People fall into this fallacy to avoid regret.

They’re reluctant to relinquish their unrealistic goals because they don’t want to regret giving up and wasting their efforts. As a result, they’re trapped in an unfulfilled path full of stress and dissatisfaction. Before being drawn into this fallacy, one should learn when to give up on goals.

Signs it’s time to disengage

When faced with adversity, there’s tension between holding on and letting go. Unfortunately, knowing when it’s time to give up on goals is challenging. In fact, Worsch et al. stated that there is no definitive answer to this question.

However, some indicators can guide you. Those signs are:

Repeated failure. While failure is an opportunity to learn, constant failure can signal that your goal is futile. Instead of pushing yourself to achieve this goal, you should reevaluate it and reengage with alternative ones.

Constant stress. Repeated failure is often accompanied by persistent stress. While stress is normal in goal pursuit, excessive stress is a warning sign as it would harm both your physical and mental health.

Lack of alignment with your values. Goals that, once desirable, can transform into something that you don’t want to become. Remember that life changes, and so do your values. Being adaptive is the key.

Furthermore, Life-Span Development theorists have introduced the concept of “developmental deadlines” to help you determine when it may be appropriate to withdraw from certain goals. These deadlines represent specific points in life when pursuing particular objectives becomes less viable.

For example, imagine you are a professional athlete aiming to break the world record. By the age of 35, you’re still far from your goal. Considering the physical limitations as you age, it will be more realistic to withdraw and reengage with another meaningful goal.

In short, developmental deadlines help you decide which goals to pursue as you progress through life’s stages.

The benefits of goal disengagement

As an adaptive process, goal disengagement provides a wide range of benefits. Keep scrolling to learn about the advantages of quitting from unrealistic goals.

Enhances life satisfaction

Stepping back from unrealistic goals and re-engaging with more realistic and meaningful ones enhance life satisfaction and happiness. By combining these two approaches, you can free up the resources needed to pursue alternative goals and stay focused on objectives that provide a sense of purpose.

Realigns personal values

Withdrawing from goals enables you to reassess them and ensure they align with your current values and circumstances. This lets you pursue more meaningful dreams while remaining realistic.

Reduces stress and burnout

Continuing to push toward unattainable goals increases the likelihood of chronic stress and mental health risks. In contrast, shifting focus to more achievable goals renews one’s sense of purpose, boosts positive emotions, and relieves the cycle of overthinking.

How to know if it is okay to give up

Giving up on a goal that once gave you purpose is challenging. Yet, if that goal starts to break you down, letting it go might be the best option. Therefore, follow these actionable and scientific-based practices to ensure successful disengagement.

Journaling your goals

Journaling is a powerful tool for connecting with your inner thoughts and deepest desires. This practice helps clarify which goals are genuinely important and which may need reevaluation.

To start keeping a goal journal, first define your goals. Write clear and specific goals instead of vague statements. One helpful method for constructing effective goals is the SMART framework, which stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

These are some questions you can ask yourself when trying to set a goal using this framework:

Specific. What exactly do I want to achieve? Who is affected by my goal? When and where will I work on this goal? What steps do I need to take?

Measurable. What criteria will I use to measure the progress? How to track it?

Achievable. Is this goal realistic, considering my current constraints and resources?

Relevant. Does this goal align with my values and long-term vision?

Time-bound. When do I want to achieve this goal? What can I do today, this week, or month to move closer to it?

You can also include key sections in your journal, such as progress tracking, challenges, and actionable steps to evaluate your goals. Finally, set aside a specific time each day or week to update your journal.

Setting regular check-ins

Schedule a monthly review to assess your overall progress. Use the WOOP (Wish, Outcome, Obstacles, and Plan) framework to review your progress and align it with your SMART goals. This helps you identify potential obstacles and available resources, allowing you to create an actionable plan.

Here are some simple questions to ask yourself to implement it.

Wish. What do you really want to achieve? Is the goal still aligned with your values? What’s your current progress in achieving this?

Outcome. What is the best outcome of achieving this goal? How far are you from your most desired outcome? Will this outcome have a significant positive impact on you?

Obstacle. What are the internal and external barriers you have encountered so far? Do you have available resources to tackle these obstacles?

Plan. What are actionable steps to overcome the obstacles?

As you reflect on your progress, you can decide whether to persist or step back. Don’t hesitate to let go of ideas that no longer align with your vision or aren’t feasible.

Seeking feedback from trusted peers

Your assessment can sometimes be misleading. Therefore, seeking a second opinion from trusted peers can help clarify your bias.

Find trustworthy friends who know you deeply. Ask them for feedback on your progress so far. Remember that praise doesn’t always mean good. You need someone willing to see you improve by giving constructive criticism.

Practicing mindfulness and self-compassion

Often, you neglect emotional well-being in the pursuit of goals. While it’s normal to experience stress and dissatisfaction through the ongoing process, when it remains unchecked, these can develop into mental health challenges.

One way to resolve this is to practice mindfulness, that is, being present in moment-to-moment experiences. This helps you be fully aware of the emotions that arise during the goal process.

As you move toward your goal, notice every emotion that comes along the way. Feel how these emotions affect your body and mind. If you realize you’ve been consumed by excessive stress and constant frustration, you should step back to protect your emotional well-being.

Nevertheless, noticing emotions and being present is not enough. You need self-compassion, too. This practice helps foster a healthy perspective on goal achievement.

The most popular way to practice self-compassion is by treating yourself like a friend, which means treating yourself with the same kindness you would offer to a friend. If you face failure in your goals, take a break and return to the task when you feel emotionally ready. The key is to avoid being harsh on yourself.

In conclusion

In a world that often glorifies persistence, you may feel pressured to pursue goals even when they no longer serve your happiness or well-being. This article has shown that letting go can be a wise choice that fosters personal growth and fulfillment.

By viewing goal disengagement as a strategy rather than a failure, you can redefine success on your terms. Take a moment to reflect on your ambitions — are they still aligned with your true desires?

Embrace the courage to step back, knowing true fulfillment lies in pursuing what genuinely matters to you.

You may have a goal that you’ve always wanted to achieve. You work hard towards it and remain persistent in the face of setbacks. However, despite relentless pursuit, success is elusive. You start to lose motivation and keep questioning yourself, leading to a cycle of stress and frustration.

At this point, you need emotional drivers to keep you motivated. That’s where emotions like hope, desire, and admiration come into play. These emotions can be powerful catalysts, helping you overcome setbacks and push toward personal growth and success.

This article delves into harnessing hope, desire, and admiration as powerful motivators to achieve goals. It discusses the unique contributions of each emotion and offers practical approaches to balancing them with realistic expectations. By tapping into these emotions, you can use your goal-setting as fuel for a more fulfilling and successful life.

Ready to unlock your potential? Dive in and learn how to leverage these emotions for greater success below.

The role of hope, desire, and admiration in achieving goals

Before learning how these emotions can help you achieve your goals, understanding what they mean is a cornerstone of this learning process.

By learning the nature of these emotions, you can effectively use them to build resilience, maintain focus, and foster a positive mindset. These are crucial in overcoming challenges and staying committed to your goals. Learn about each one of them below.

Hope

Rick A. Snyder, a leading researcher well-known for his Hope Theory, defined hope as “the perceived capability to derive pathways to desired goals and motivate oneself via agency thinking to use those pathways.”

By pathways, he means that high-hope people will be able to generate usable routes, including identifying alternative routes that are feasible to attain. Likewise, by agency thinking, he meant the kind of thinking that motivates high-hope people to keep working toward their goals. This is because they believe they can find ways to succeed, unlike those with lower hopes.

Thus, hope is not merely an emotion but a structured cognitive process that drives goal-setting and goal-achievement behaviors. It enables you to envision your future goals, identify potential pathways and obstacles in the achievement process, and maintain motivation to persevere even after setbacks.

Read more: How to Find Hope When All Seems Lost

Desire

Desire can be loosely defined as wishes or wants one truly holds. It means longing for something and feeling satisfied upon achieving it.

Desire can be defined by how motivated you are to achieve a big goal by taking specific actions. It is a motivational factor that enables you to translate your intention into action and ensures you stick with focal behaviors that push you toward goal achievement.

In short, desire is an emotional energy that fuels your intention toward your goals — a powerful factor in personal motivation.

However, you might need something else; something to inspire and guide you in pursuing goals, detailed in the next section.

Admiration

Admiration is a uniquely human emotion that facilitates social learning and drives people to emulate their role models. It is characterized by positive feelings about other’s excellence and the impetus to imitate their skills, talent, accomplishment, or quality of excellence, leading to self-improvement.

When you admire someone, you are inspired to learn from them and feel motivated to achieve as much as they do. This emotion keeps you energized and helps you perceive your dreams as attainable.

Now that you know the three components crucial for achieving your goal, you’ll learn how they uniquely contribute to goal attainment. Dive more into this article to find out how.

The connection between emotions and goals

Hope, desire, and admiration are powerful transformative forces that push you toward successful goal attainment. Due to its motivational component, each emotion uniquely directs your behavior to achieve your goals, even the ones that seem unattainable. The question is: How?

As mentioned earlier, hope can strategically drive your goal-setting and execution. It provides the mental framework to set higher goals, think creatively about overcoming obstacles, and nurture motivation in goal pursuit despite setbacks.

Moreover, hope is crucial in maintaining perseverance and resilience in pursuing long-term goals. In a longitudinal and experimental study, a researcher from Tilburg University showed that when experiencing hope, people are more likely to succeed as they are not as affected by negative feedback and persist in pursuing seemingly unattainable goals.

Thus, hope has a buffering and building effect that can push you toward successful goal attainment.

On the other hand, desires serve as a powerful motivator force in goal pursuit. They are the things that can motivate a person, transform an intention into concrete actions, and provide the emotional energy to pursue goals.

Additionally, desire helps you clarify the “why” of your goal purpose, fueling your initiation to action and making you commit to achieving your desired outcomes. This is especially crucial for conflicting goals.

Lastly, admiration can boost motivation by providing role models and benchmarks for success. It can cultivate self-efficacy and encourage individuals to strive for personal growth by learning from others’ achievements.

Read more: The Power Within: Unleashing Your Potential Through Self-Efficacy

Together, these emotions create a powerful trio that aids in achieving goals. Therefore, effectively harnessing these emotions can lead to personal development and goal accomplishment.

Leveraging strong emotions to achieve goals

You can use these emotions to achieve goals through actionable, scientific-based practices. By balancing these emotions, you can remain motivated while maintaining realistic expectations and avoiding the pitfalls of over-idealization or burnout.

Here are practical ways to optimize your goal achievement using the three emotions.

Cultivating hope by visualizing success

Visualization is a cognitive process of creating a mental image of a desired outcome. It involves imagining specific scenarios, actions, or experiences associated with achieving a particular goal. By imagining how you will successfully reach your goals, you feel the sense of hope and optimism that gives you the mental energy to pursue whatever you want.

There are various ways to practice it, including mental contrasting. This technique involves visualizing your goals and contrasting them with current reality and potential obstacles. This technique lets you mentally experience your success and helps you avoid the drawbacks of overcommitting to unattainable goals.

Oettingen and Reininger, authors of the study linked above, introduced a framework that consists of four steps to practice mental contrasting. That is:

Wish. Identify a meaningful goal you want to achieve.

Outcome. Visualize the best possible outcome if the goal is attained.

Obstacle. Pinpoint what internal or external barriers could prevent you from reaching your goal.

Plan. Create an if-then plan to address each obstacle (e.g., “If I encounter X, then I will do Y”).

Harnessing desire by identifying your passion

To ensure successful goal attainment, align them with your values. It means you focus on what truly matters and develop it to strong desired goals. Once it sets, you can gain the benefit of the powerful force of desire to achieve your goals.

Start by identifying a meaningful goal that genuinely interests you. If you’re struggling to find what truly intrigues you, reflect and ask yourself some questions:

What do I love doing even though I am not good at it and don’t get much reward?

What are the things that make me lose track and become deeply engaged?

What would I regret not having pursued or experienced at the end of my life?

Last, combine your strongest desire with intrinsic motivation, such as personal growth or skill mastery, to double the powerful effect of desire.

Building admiration by finding and engaging with role models

Now you have your most desired goal. To realize your dream, you can look up to individuals who have achieved similar goals and draw inspiration from their journey. These people don’t have to be public figures or celebrities; they can be your family members, closest relatives, or friends.

Here are some steps you can take to build admiration:

Identify who you want to admire. List people who share the same desire as yours. Identify what qualities make them stand out and will help you achieve your goals.

Analyze their journey. Gather as much information as possible about their habits, values, and supportive environments that contribute to their success, and analyze how you can apply it to your journey.

Reflect on your choice. Continuously evaluate the quality of your role models. Blindly following them without reflecting on your values will lead to unhealthy admiration.

Balancing emotions with realistic strategies

To harness these emotions effectively, focus on developing resilience and adaptive planning in your goal pursuit. How to do so?

Set adaptive goals. Start by setting clear, flexible goals that are not rigidly tied to one specific outcome.

Reassess hope and desire. As you progress, reflect on your initial hopes and desires and assess whether they align with your evolving circumstances.

Leverage admiration. Use admiration as a guide, think of role models who have adapted their paths, and incorporate their strategies into your approach.

Transform setbacks into growth. When encountering setbacks, use hope to maintain optimism and reframe desire into a growth mindset focused on progress.

Refine admiration. Regularly evaluate your admiration for others, focusing on their ability to adapt and persevere rather than their final achievements.

This balanced emotional approach helps you remain focused, adjust plans without losing motivation, and stay resilient in facing challenges.

In conclusion

Hope, desire, and admiration are powerful motivational factors that can help you overcome obstacles and stay committed to your goals. When used together, they provide the resilience needed to navigate setbacks and adapt to changing circumstances.

By harnessing these emotions, you can cultivate motivation, reframe challenges, and pursue growth more effectively. Reflect on how these emotions influence your journey and incorporate them into your goal-setting.

Take the first step by embracing their potential and applying these insights to achieve your success.

Do you ever feel sad while reminiscing about a loved one who has passed away, yet at the same time, you also feel happy while recalling joyful memories with them? In a culture where happiness is the ultimate goal, this experience is often seen as peculiar.

This experience leads people to avoid sadness at all costs, believing that if happiness is good, sadness must be bad. Yet, the interaction of happiness and sadness is possible, even crucial.

Can sadness and happiness truly coexist? This article delves into the complex dance between the two emotions. It tackles how acknowledging and managing sadness can lead to a more fulfilling life.

Learn more about sadness as a normal, everyday emotion to embrace the full spectrum of human emotions.

The nature of human emotions

At first glance, sadness and happiness may seem like polar opposites that cannot be experienced simultaneously. However, this simplistic view overlooks the intricate nature of human emotions. These emotions are not mutually exclusive; they can coexist and even complement each other in ways that enrich your emotional life.

The possibility of experiencing these two opposite emotions is backed up by growing evidence established over the past decade. A recent study has documented how people can elicit two opposite emotions at a given time. The participants reported feeling happy and sad at the same time when reminiscing about the good days, giving nuance to their emotional experience.

The notion of mixed emotions has also been supported by research in neuroscience. Mixed emotions appear to recruit brain regions similar to pure emotions. Given this, mixed emotions are processed through the simultaneous activation of neural circuits associated with different emotions.

The benefit of experiencing mixed emotions

Feeling happy and sad at the same time is not only a mundane everyday experience, but it also offers a wide variety of benefits. It’s essential to achieve greater emotional well-being. The benefits of experiencing two opposite emotions include:

Reduces bias in information processing. As a result, people who are sad have more accurate judgment and decision-making;

Evokes new awareness of priorities. This happens in the face of conflicting goals, leading to better goal outcomes;

Guides individuals to find meaning in life. This leads to enhanced eudaimonic happiness — a kind of happiness achieved through meaning-making and finding purpose in life.

While the simultaneous experience profoundly benefits one’s emotional complexity, it is equally important to delve deeper into the distinct role of sadness.

Sadness offers more than just negativity. It adds depth to your emotional experience and is essential for personal growth. Understanding what roles sadness plays in your emotional landscape can help you better regulate your experience.

The role of sadness

Falling under the spectrum of negative emotions, sadness is often seen as something to be avoided. Yet, it serves adaptive functions that contribute to human survival and well-being. Previous studies have documented the benefits of experiencing sad emotions:

Enhances analytical thinking and problem-solving

When experiencing sadness, you tend to be more reflective and thorough in your decision-making.

For example, an experimental study involving 174 managers showed that under low time constraints, sad managers exhibited better strategic outcomes than happy ones. This happens because sadness makes you more cautious when evaluating situational factors, reducing the likelihood of making errors.

Additionally, sadness may promote systematic and detailed information processing and improve memory by reducing misleading information. In this state, you will be better able to figure out things, unravel complex situations, reassess your current situation, and come up with better solutions that adhere to your current demands.

Promotes better goal attainment

Feeling sad can help you achieve goals more effectively. One study found that sadness promotes cognitive change, allowing you to appraise your current situation more realistically when faced with unattainable goals.

This emotional state helps you reflect on the impact of loss. Then, you can adjust your beliefs, disengage from unrealistic goals, and forge more realistic ones.

Fosters social connectedness

Sadness also plays an important role in strengthening social bonds. When you cry, it acts as a social signal that communicates a need for empathy and support.

A systematic study through 41 countries revealed that tears serve as a signal of the need for help. This signal may evoke the intention to support the criers due to intense feelings of empathy. This signaling can help maintain social cohesion and reinforce social bonds within a group.

Improves resilience and facilitates personal growth

Sadness can prompt introspection and self-reflection. Experiencing sadness in the face of significant life events may foster post-traumatic growth through embracing new possibilities, greater appreciation of life, spiritual development, and improved relationships.

This introspection through appraising traumatic events can lead to personal growth, which is crucial for emotional resilience and long-term well-being.

The importance of emotional regulation

The enormous benefits of sadness can only be achieved when you practice appropriate emotional regulation. Regulating sadness is not about suppressing it but rather recognizing and understanding these emotions so you can healthily address them.

Moreover, suppressing emotions, including sadness, leads to a wide range of negative outcomes, ranging from poorer psychological well-being to a lack of social adjustment.

Central to this process, effective emotional regulation allows you to experience happiness and sadness without being overwhelmed. Balancing these two emotions is essential in maintaining psychological well-being, enabling you to respond to life’s ups and downs with greater flexibility.

By cultivating adaptive emotional regulation skills, you can better navigate the complexities of your emotional experience.

Practices for balancing sadness and happiness

Insights from psychological studies highlight the importance of experiencing a full range of emotions — both positive and negative — to build emotional resilience. Only through experiencing ups and downs can you feel greater happiness, leading you to a more meaningful and flourishing life. By learning how to balance happiness and sadness, you can avoid the pitfalls of toxic positivity that lead to neglecting necessary emotional processes.

Balancing these emotions can be easy, but it requires sustainable practices. Here are five practices you can apply in your daily life to balance happiness and sadness:

Emotion validation

Validating emotions involves recognizing and accepting feelings, including sadness, as an essential part of the human experience.

Validating sadness doesn’t mean dwelling on it but rather understanding the importance of this emotion in your emotional landscape. If you ever feel sad, try to accept the feeling as normal by saying, “It’s normal to feel sad after a loss like this.”

Reflective practices

Try reflecting on your emotions by practicing journaling or meditation. These two practices can serve as valuable tools for understanding emotions.

Journaling allows you to express your emotions in a safe, private space, helping you to explore the causes of your sadness and gain insights into your emotions. In addition, meditation encourages a deeper connection to your inner experiences.

Together, these practices help process sadness and contribute to emotional balance. This enables you to navigate both happy and sad moments with greater awareness.

A simple, quick, and easy meditation technique you can apply to your daily life is deep breathing. Find a comfortable place to sit, either in your bed or living room. Take a deep breath and let it out slowly. This exercise usually takes only a few minutes, but you can do it for around 10 minutes to gain greater benefits.

Mindfulness and acceptance

Mindfulness involves staying present in the moment and accepting emotions without judgment. When applied to balancing happiness and sadness, mindfulness helps individuals experience their emotions fully without feeling overwhelmed by either.

If you ever feel overwhelmed by your thoughts, try to sit quietly and observe your sad emotions as they arise. Do not judge them, just let them pass like clouds in the sky. Practice this for 5 minutes a day and feel the difference.

By cultivating mindfulness, you can develop a more balanced emotional state where happiness and sadness are integral to your life’s journey.

Read more: Reaching a Higher Sense of Self Through Mindfulness

Self-care and self-compassion

Self-care and self-compassion are essential for maintaining emotional well-being, especially when balancing happiness and sadness. Self-care involves engaging in activities that nurture your body and mind, such as exercise, healthy eating, and rest. This practice can help mitigate the effects of sadness and promote overall well-being.

On the other hand, self-compassion is about treating yourself with kindness and understanding during difficult times. By practicing self-compassion, individuals can create a supportive internal environment that allows them to experience and process sadness without self-judgment. Thus, practicing self-compassion can help you to have a more balanced emotional life.

One technique you can apply to practice self-compassion is through treating yourself as a friend. Here is how you can practice it:

Identify the events that keep bothering you.

Imagine how you would react if your friend made mistakes like you did.

Apply the same kindness to yourselves by making positive affirmations of the events. Instead of saying, “I messed up everything. I have failed everyone,” try to say, “I have done my best with the knowledge and resources available to me.”

Gratitude

Gratitude is a cornerstone of positive psychology that can enhance happiness while still allowing space for sadness. Practicing gratitude involves focusing on the positive aspects of life and appreciating what you have, which can increase feelings of contentment and joy.

However, this practice doesn’t require ignoring or minimizing sadness. Instead, it encourages individuals to acknowledge their difficulties while also recognizing the good in their lives.

There are various methods for cultivating gratitude, with journaling standing out as one of the most prominent. Utilizing gratitude prompts, such as writing down three positive aspects of your life, can also be beneficial.

By integrating gratitude into daily routines, individuals can cultivate a more balanced emotional state. This can lead to a state where happiness is deepened by the presence of gratitude, even amidst challenging times.

In conclusion

Most people would distance themselves from sadness, believing they can chase happiness alone. However, sadness and happiness are entwining rather than opposing forces. One can very well exist within the context of the other.

Sadness is a normal experience and an essential part of emotional complexity. Recognizing the role of sadness is the key to achieving a more balanced and meaningful life.

Embrace these insights to cultivate a balanced emotional experience where both happiness and sadness are valued as integral parts of your journey.
