Tess Jewell-Larsen: Nurturing Mindfulness in a Busy World | Work in Progress #39

Life can become very stressful indeed, but your stress shouldn’t define who you are. This episode discusses Tess Jewell-Larsen’s methods of using multiple disciplines to nurture mindfulness and yourself back to a state of balance.

Meet Tess Jewell-Larsen

Tess Jewell-Larsen teaches mindfulness to empower women professionals, entrepreneurs, and high-achievers. She is a certified mindfulness coach, an experienced yoga teacher, and a yoga therapist in training. Tess uses her own experience of burnout to help her clients achieve a more joyful, balanced, and optimistic outlook despite the challenges that life gives them. She is co-host of the podcast The Happy Edit.

About the episode

The discussion started with Tess’ definition of mindfulness, as recognizing the moment that one is living in, without judgment. She believed that states of mindfulness happen more often than most people think – just that it’s difficult to tell what they are. On the other hand, she also advocates for consciously learning to approach these states from ourselves. She revealed that these mindfulness states can help pull you back to the present moment when things are becoming too hectic and stressful.

Tess revealed that there are many opportunities for these mindfulness practices, and they don’t have to be anything special. Whether you’re walking to and from work, drinking coffee, or making a report, you can pull your senses back to the present moment.

The conversation then turned into the main benefit of mindfulness. Tess revealed that most people today are distracted, pulled into multiple directions at the same time. Mindfulness can help address this by allowing a person to focus on one thing at a time. This makes them more effective they’re doing.

One of the best applications of mindfulness approaches is when it comes to burnout. Burnout is a state of prolonged high stress. They discussed the manifestations of burnout, such as anxiety, negativity, muscle pain, and more. Mindfulness practices help balance the nervous system, which helps the body and mind heal.

Her most valued daily practice is a mindfulness exercise. She “scans” all of her senses first thing in the morning before she goes about her day.

In conclusion

Daily life can become incredibly busy, and sometimes this boils over into burnout. This state is not a good place to be, mentally and physically, but Tess Jewell-Larsen’s mindfulness techniques help you get out of it and into a state of balance.
