Steven Hickman: How Self-Compassion Builds Resilience | Bouncing Back #4

The way you speak to yourself impacts every aspect of your life. If you are hard on yourself, you tend to be more stressed. In this episode, you will learn why self-compassion and resilience are essential to your physical and mental health.

Meet Steven Hickman

He and his colleague, Michelle Becker, co-developed the Mindful Self-Compassion Teacher Training program (both in-person and live online versions) and have directly participated in the training of over 1000 MSC teachers around the world. He has had the privilege of teaching the MSC program many times around the globe and is also a certified teacher and trainer of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction.

About the episode

This podcast episode is hosted by Tia Harmer and is joined by Steven Hickman. The conversation started when Steven shared his favorite book and movie. Then, as the conversation went deep, he shared what mindful self-compassion means and why resilience is important.

He also stated that there are three components of self-compassion, including mindfulness (the ability to be present and not get too attached to thoughts), common humanity (recognizing that when we suffer, it’s what we really face as human beings), and self-kindness (treat yourself with kindness and give yourself what you really need).

Additionally, Steven shared that through meditation and mindful eating, you can practice mindful self-compassion. It allows you to nurture your body.

In conclusion

Remember that you, more than anyone, deserve kindness and respect. And self-compassion begins with you. Practicing mindfulness and self-compassion can always start small.
