Raising Parents

Shelley Kemmerer: Parental Self-Care | Raising Parents #4

Being a parent may be rewarding, but you can’t hide the fact that you may also feel trapped and burned out from taking care of your children while managing other to-dos. In this podcast episode with Shelly Kemmerer, you will understand that it’s normal to feel that way and that you also need to find some time to recharge.

Meet Shelley Kemmerer

Shelley is a parent, a Board Certified Physician Assistant, and the founder of Run Tell Mom. She is focusing on sustainable burnout prevention for both parents and caregivers. She also received her post-graduate certification from The Training Institute of Parental Burnout. She collaborated with other parental mental health professional advocates to increase awareness in both personal and professional atmospheres.

She currently offers 1:1 and 1:group sessions for parents and caregivers, as well as public speaking events in both corporate and organizational environments. Also, she works with expecting parents, as she wholeheartedly believes that burnout prevention is an integral component of family planning.

About the episode

In this episode, Shelly explained the need for self-care for parents. According to her, it is something you can invest in for your well-being. There are a lot of activities where parents can recharge their batteries, and it is an investment in personal growth outside your parental responsibilities.

Shelly also said that there are three main components of parental burnout: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization/detachment, and feeling ineffective in your parental role. These components are connected with mental health, so self-care is essential if you want to be your best at home.

In conclusion

Self-care and mental health are connected, and neglecting one of these can have a negative impact on your well-being. Every parent deserves to find a balance between their own needs and those of their children. Through this process, you create a positive impact on yourself and your children.
