Shawn McLaughlin: Smart Home Energy Management | On the House #7

With the energy cost rising, there are various movements to conserve energy without changing your lifestyle. This episode with Shawn McLaughlin will guide you through home energy management.

Meet Shawn McLaughlin

Shawn McLaughlin is the founder and CEO of Emporia Energy, an energy management technology company that aims to make energy efficiency accessible to all homeowners by creating energy-saving technology at the lowest cost and highest quality possible.

He launched Emporia in 2018 after becoming passionate about the energy transition and the role technology played in energy management, and he brought his 25 years of experience as a commodities trader, largely dealing with energy products, to the new project. By reducing customers’ energy use and saving them money, Emporia is helping people create a healthier planet and build a brighter future for us all.

About the episode

The conversation started when Gabriella Joustra and Shawn talked about smart energy management. According to Shawn, it entails making your house more energy efficient. And that the smart energy management market provides tools that can help you conserve energy.

According to him, in Emporia, it’s done by: time-of-use management tools that automatically monitor your energy consumption, peak demand management tools that automatically manage your appliances through the off-peak or low-energy hours of the day or ones that aim for excess solar optimization.

Shawn also mentioned that heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) is by far the highest energy-consuming appliance in homes. And he also discussed how electric cars would accelerate across the globe since the future is really integrating.

Additionally, he advised that people don’t have to flip their current lifestyle upside-down to be smart about household energy management. By leveraging smart home technology, you can live the life you already have while the computer automatically runs it down for you.

In conclusion

By doing smart energy management, you’ll not only conserve energy and understand how it works most efficiently, but you’ll also be aware of its environmental impact. It is important to focus on a healthy home and a home that will participate well within its community and society.
