Sharon Franke: Kitchen Equipment | On the House #5

Proper kitchen placement ensures that you have what you need at hand and aren’t running around the kitchen looking for whisks or spatulas. Also, having the right kitchen equipment and keeping them organized will not only make your life easier but will also enhance your cooking skills.

Meet Sharon Franke

Sharon Franke is a journalist and product tester who specializes in kitchen equipment of all kinds, from ranges to rolling pins. She began her culinary career by working as a cook and chef in New York City restaurants for seven years.

She did coursework in cooking, pastry making, and restaurant management at the New York City College of Technology after receiving a BA in History from SUNY Albany. She is also an active member and past president of Les Dames d’Escoffier New York.

Before beginning her freelance career, she worked at the Good Housekeeping Institute for 30 years, serving as director of the Kitchen Appliances Lab. She was responsible for overseeing the testing and editorial coverage of everything related to cooking appliances and equipment. During this time, she served as Good Housekeeping magazine’s spokesperson in her area of expertise.

About the episode

In this podcast episode hosted by Gabriella Joustra, Sharon shared the importance of household management and the practices for arranging kitchen equipment.

According to her, what helped her cooking skills was utilizing the mise en place theory, which means gathering the ingredients before starting to cook. She also advised that one thing that a person should consider is whether a new appliance will work for their lifestyle rather than trying to change the lifestyle for that new appliance.

In conclusion

Household management is essential since it shows orderliness and discipline in oneself. And not only does it help you save money and time, but it also empowers you and can give you a sense of satisfaction and a general feeling of goodness about yourself.
