Poorna Khanna: Protecting the Environment Is Also Protecting Ourselves | Doing Well #22

This episode will tackle the intricate relationship between environmental protection and self-care and how pro-environmental behaviors can positively impact overall well-being.

Meet Poorna Khanna

Poorna Khanna is a passionate environmentalist with a master’s degree in Environment Management, dedicated to making a positive impact on the world. Currently serving as a Project Manager-CSR at the Associated Chambers of Commerce & Industries of India, Poorna believes in the transformative power of nature and strives to raise awareness for a better future for the next generation.

Alongside her professional role, she is an educator, environmental blogger, content creator, and conservationist. With her extensive experience, she has conducted numerous sessions in schools and organizations, covering a wide range of topics to promote environmental sensitivity.

About the episode

According to Poorna, well-being is a balanced state where various factors contributing to your overall health and happiness align. She recognizes the influence of your environment on your well-being and defines it as being content socially, professionally, emotionally, mentally, and within your surroundings. Poorna cautioned against misconceptions, such as the belief that well-being is a constant state and the pitfalls of comparing oneself to others.

Poorna advocates for the Indian principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which promotes unity and interconnectedness among all elements of the world, including humans, the environment, and its components.

She emphasized the need to consider the human environment and foster respect and cooperation among all entities for a harmonious environment. She acknowledged the challenges but believes that achieving a perfect balance is possible through mutual respect and collaboration.

Poorna highlighted the impact of environmental factors, including air quality, on an individual’s life. She emphasized that polluted air not only affects your respiratory system but can also have adverse effects on your brain. Despite this, many people remain unaware of these dangers and fail to recognize the positive impact of connecting with nature.

She stressed the importance of understanding the significance of your natural surroundings in promoting mental well-being and peace in your life.

In conclusion

Implementing pro-environmental behaviors in your daily life is much easier than it seems. Start by distinguishing between your needs, wants, and consumption habits, and only buy what you truly need. Avoid wasting things that are still usable, like cosmetic products, as it not only wastes resources but also your money.

Consider wearing items repeatedly and donating clothes to those who need them to reduce waste and promote reuse. Finally, start small by using both sides of the paper and gradually adopting other sustainable practices. These small changes will positively impact both the environment and your well-being.
