Merryn Snare: Stress Management Strategies to Prevent Mental Health Issues | Bouncing Back #10

Your overall health is in danger if you are constantly stressed. Your emotional, physical, and mental health suffers from the effects of stress. Also, your ability to think clearly, function well on a daily basis, and have fun in life is reduced. So, this episode will help you how to manage stress so it won’t affect your mental health.

Meet Merryn Snare

Merryn Snare is a psychologist who specializes in stress and anxiety. She also co-founded an arachnophobia (spider phobia) program in conjunction with the Melbourne Zoo.

About the episode

The conversation started when the host, Tia Harmer, and Merryn discussed personal resilience. Merryn said that personal resilience is the ability or the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties that you might encounter, whether you experience them mentally, emotionally, or behaviorally, and what this really requires is a level of flexibility because if a person has one way of responding to something, it’s not going to work in all situations.

She added that it’s not just about being able to recover quickly but also being flexible and able to adjust to changes in demands.

Merryn cited some types of anxiety, including social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic, fear, and phobia. Also, she said that a lack of enjoyment is a common element in depressive symptoms, as well as sleep issues that can also relate to both anxiety and depression.

Moreover, Merryn shared some practical tips on how to manage stress, such as doing yoga, meditation, and other forms of routine. And she mentioned that a person should be aware of the early warning signs since they are key indicators of having anxiety or depression.

In conclusion

The best gift you can give yourself is self-care. And by practicing self-care, you are being kind to yourself, especially when dealing with difficult times. It’s best to recognize your emotions, and there are a lot of ways you can overcome stress and anxiety.
