Some individuals argue that being their authentic selves is overrated. However, leading yourself into the most fulfilling life is ideal. Practicing mindfulness enables you to focus on the moment, expanding your capacity to learn and regulate your emotions, which leads to overall wellness.
Joree Rose, MA, LMFT, is a licensed marriage and family therapist, mindfulness and meditation teacher, coach, author, and speaker, and she also leads mindfulness retreats around the world. She has helped thousands of people to live happier and more fulfilling lives by living with greater awareness and compassion, allowing them to decrease their stress and anxiety and shed unhealthy habits, patterns, and mindsets.
Additionally, Joree is the host of the podcast Journey Forward with Joree Rose and has authored the newly released A Year of Gratitude, Daily Moments of Reflection, Grace, and Thanks, as well as two mindfulness books, Squirmy Learns to be Mindful and Mindfulness, It’s Elementary. She has been featured in prominent media outlets such as Oprahmag.com, NBCnews.com, Business Insider, KTLA News, and many more!
In this podcast episode hosted by Lu Ngo, Joree defined mindfulness as ultimately being mindful, being aware, and having attention and intention.
And that she actually thinks it’s almost more important to recognize the moments you’re no longer aware of because you live your life on autopilot. An example of this is when you go through the motions of your day. You don’t even realize that you’re on autopilot because it’s so ingrained, but the moment you wake up from that “autopilotness” is the mindful moment when you have the awareness that you’re no longer aware.
Joree also initiated that one must be aware of what’s arising in the present moment, especially when having uncomfortable emotions, and know your typical habits, patterns, and mindsets. Since humans have thoughts and emotions, one must pay attention to what one wants.
Additionally, she shared how meditation and mindfulness relate to one another, but they are two different practices that people often use interchangeably.
Mindfulness is not something you add to your to-do list. On the other hand, it is something you add to your to-be list of who you want to be in the world. As humans, you have full control over how you will respond and react to whatever is arising in the present moment.
