Holly Jade: Navigating the Complexities of Emotional Blindness in Relationships | Bouncing Back #30

Emotional blindness in relationships can stem from the lingering effects of childhood trauma and dysfunctional parenting, creating challenges in emotional connection and understanding. About the episode

At the start of the episode, Holly discussed that building resilience means developing better tools and understanding to deal with life’s issues. Though individuals are not immune to pain and hurt, it is important to recognize and observe emotions without fear. She says emotions arise, pass away, and should be released.

Emotional blindness in relationships can be caused by a lack of safety to express emotions, childhood trauma, and dysfunctional parenting or caregiving. It often stems from feeling unsafe to express emotions due to past experiences. However, Holly shared that it can be resolved through self-awareness and personal growth.

Working gently with individuals is important to expand their capacity for emotional awareness. Pushing people past their capacity too soon can be overwhelming and cause them to shut down. Determining the pacing of working with someone unaware of their emotional inhibitions can be difficult.

According to Holly, mindfulness is important for emotionally blind individuals to start studying and invoking emotions. Checking in with oneself and sitting in stillness can help relax the nervous system. Art therapy and music therapy are other options for invoking emotions and self-exploration.

Using an emotion wheel can also help break down and identify different emotions. Looking at specific emotions like shame or anger can help individuals connect and feel these emotions. Moving on after emotional blindness or abuse involves understanding that you didn’t deserve the abuse and prioritizing self-care.

Navigating the complexities of emotional blindness in relationships involves understanding that some relationships aren’t meant to work out long-term, and knowing when to let go can be difficult. Attachment or detachment in relationships can be challenging, but relationships can help individuals uncover new aspects of themselves and resolve certain issues.

In conclusion

In navigating emotional blindness, the journey involves acknowledging the undeserved nature of abuse, prioritizing self-care, and recognizing the potential for personal growth within relationships. Recognizing and observing emotions without fear helps individuals confront life’s challenges.

Individuals can address emotional blindness through self-awareness and personal growth. Various tools such as mindfulness, art therapy, and music therapy are recommended for invoking emotions and promoting self-exploration.
