Work in Progress

Gabriella Joustra: Working-From-Home | Work in Progress #10

Some employees considered working from home more efficient since it eliminated commutes and could manage better work/life balance. However, other people don’t, and concerns persist regarding how this setup affects communication, including socialization, mentoring, and many more. This episode will discuss the pros and cons of working from home.

Meet Gabriella Joustra

Gabriella Joustra is studying psychology at Monash University. She has a Bachelor of Journalism and has completed various journalism internships specializing in radio and podcasts.

Additionally, Gabriella aspires to produce content that is informative, educational, and entertaining and is particularly passionate about science and psychology. She is currently the host of two LMSL podcasts: On the House, a podcast about building a healthy home lifestyle, and Room by Room, a podcast that talks about different aspects of the science behind home organization.

About the episode

The conversation started between Tia Harmer, the host, and her colleague Gabriella when the latter shared her experience of the first time engaging in a work-from-home setup. She shared that working from home might be challenging in the beginning since WFH does not have direction.

Gabriella gave some recommendations if you are in a WFH setup, including ensuring you’re in contact with people and know what you’re supposed to do and better writing down the to-do list. And also, she has a physical diary where she writes down all of the things that she needs to do. That’s why you have to be self-motivated.

Moreover, Gabriella said that personal productivity means utilizing time to do the things that you want to do in an effective way and being okay if you’re not 100% productive.

In conclusion

Working from home has some positive and negative side effects. Failing to maintain motivation levels at work can be stressful, so it is essential to develop good habits to sustain self-motivation and acknowledge that there are days you are not 100% productive.
