Dr. Nikki Weiner is a licensed occupational therapist, lead ergonomic specialist, and president of The Rising Workplace. Dr. Nikki leads a team of ergonomic specialists who provide services globally.

As a certified ergonomic specialist, Dr. Nikki performs assessment, consulting, and training in various workplaces, from single-home offices to large industrial facilities. Dr. Nikki’s work centers on the dynamic relationship between workplace personal, environmental, and occupational factors, with outcomes focused on employee engagement, performance, and well-being.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to organization and ergonomics, as everyone has unique needs. Additionally, ergonomics is not just about aesthetics but also about how the space impacts the performance of activities within it. 

Ergonomics is also crucial in the home office setting due to the rise of musculoskeletal disorders related to computer workstations. Over time, working in awkward postures, performing repetitive activities, and sitting for extended periods can lead to wear and tear on the body, potentially resulting in discomfort, pain, and even disability. Therefore, arranging and designing your home office environment to suit personal needs is essential to avoid these risks.

Dr. Nikki also emphasized that repetitive activities commonly cause musculoskeletal disorders. However, rather than giving up the activities altogether, ergonomic practices can manage these disorders. Strategies include using different tools, taking breaks, warming up, and being aware of posture. 

In a home office, consider the entire workspace, not just individual components like the wrist or mouse, when addressing ergonomics. Looking at the alignment of the work surface with the elbow level improves wrist posture. Motorized desks and ergonomic chairs are becoming more affordable, and DIY solutions using books or boxes can also help create a standing workstation. Other ergonomic fads, like kneeling and ball chairs, may not be recommended due to their lack of adjustability and potential safety hazards.

Natural light also helps regulate the circadian rhythm. It can positively impact mood, alertness, and sleep quality. Dr. Nikki debunks the myth that blue light causes eye strain and recommends taking regular breaks every 20 minutes to look away from the screen and relax the eyes. She also mentions the importance of managing sound in the workspace, as loud noises can negatively impact focus and productivity.
