You may have heard so much about positive discipline but you don’t know how to start implementing it. If this sounds like you, this episode is for you.
Dr. Janice Johnson Dias holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Temple University with a specialization in urban and political sociology.
Her funded research focuses on mothers and children and has been published in top-ranking policy and social science journals. She is a tenured associate professor of sociology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and president of the GrassROOTS Community Foundation, a New Jersey-based training institution with a focus on public health and social action that she co-founded in 2011.
In March 2021, Janice published her first book with Ballantine Books/Random House, Parent Like It Matters: How to Raise Joyful-Changemaking Girls. It summarizes her life experiences and offers practical tips on how caregivers can raise children who are devoted to social justice.
Janice currently lives in West Orange, New Jersey, with her husband, Scott Dias, their daughter Marley, and dog Philly.
The episode started with Janice establishing the definition of parenting — and it doesn’t necessarily mean biologically giving birth to a child or adopting a child. Janice aligned parenting more towards coaching as it involves bringing forth children with care so they become the best versions of themselves.
Janice also emphasized the importance of knowing your self and being mindful of your challenges and intentions when transitioning from being individuals to parents. She also defined positive discipline, its roles in caregiving, and impacts on children’s cognitive development.
Some great takeaways from this episode is that children should be made aware about how respect works. Respect is given, and all of life deserves respect. Also, caregivers need to be informed about accepting things and willing to find information that can help children to understand the social world. Caregivers need to be curious learners about children’s world in order to understand where they’re coming from and make significant impact on their lives. As a parent, your main role is to create security at all levels, so children can be happy and content.
