Meet Danielle Dick

Danielle Dick, Ph.D., is a tenured Professor of Psychiatry at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where she serves as the inaugural director of the Rutgers Addiction Research Center at the Brain Health Institute and holds the Greg Brown Endowed Chair in Neuroscience. 

She is an internationally recognized and award-winning expert on genetic and environmental influences on human behavior. Also, she has led and contributed to more than 20 grants from the National Institutes of Health, with grant funding totaling more than 30 million dollars. 

Danielle has more than 350 peer-reviewed publications in the areas of child development, addiction, mental health, genetics, and human behavior and won numerous national and international awards for her work. She has been named one of the most highly cited researchers in the world across all fields of science. Her book, The Child Code, was published by Penguin Random House and helps parents tailor their parenting to what will work best for each of their unique children.

About the episode

The episode started with fun, scientific-based facts on how genes and environments play a big role in children’s development. Danielle then explained how genes play an important role in the way brains are wired and how it affects people differently when they react to environments. 

She also shared the best practices to improve children’s behavior problems and challenges as you implement them. She added that when handling children’s emotions, parents must consider their child’s age, especially in adolescence, and the peers they are with.

Danielle also said it is important for parents to set boundaries with their children since it is also a form of self-care.
